The combination sets were bad - sushi roll have hard rock rice, the tempura has raw thick batter, the soup is cold and no salad. Tempura has no grated radish on the side. My daughter's set C came with Nato that we didn't order and was charged for it. My son's ebi fry became tiny shrimps instead, and was given two tempura shrimp to make up for the tininess. What happened? We have been coming here for years. And never experienced these shoddy work. I ate out here when I was checking out the area for another event. The place is super simple, so I'll keep the review simple. Check the photos for pics of the food and the menu. It's a better meal than IHOP or Denny's for about the same price. It's also friendly and quaint, small with about 10 tables ranging from 2 to 10. Good place for solo, date, or small party. If I'm in the area a gain I'd come again, but it's not so outstanding that I'll go out of my way. My sister found this place for us because we wanted to have a classic Japanese breakfast. This place exceeded our expectations and the food was amazing! The waitresses are constantly coming around to see if we need anything and filled up our tea several times throughout the meal. The food was delicious and came out super quick! Tip: if you've always wanted to try natto, you should try it with Combination D! This is the place to go in the South Bay for a Japanese style breakfast. The salted salmon, tamagoyaki, rice, and miso soup reminded me of the meals I had in Japan. There are some bones in the fish, so watch for that if you order it. Prices are very reasonable at $8 to $12 depending on which main entree you order. I also ordered the special with the katsu filets and the cold soba. The katsu was very tasty, good portions and perfectly fried. Great traditional Japanese food spot. Came here for dinner, but I've heard many good things about the breakfast as well (which is available all day), so I'll definitely have to give that a try sometime. It's literally tucked away in the corner of the shopping center, so it's not really obvious where it's located from the parking lot. Tons of parking, so no worries there. Inside there is plenty of seating for groups of all sizes. It has a very simple/minimal layout and design to it. It's one of those places that you kind of know what to expect from the food/service when you walk in based on what you see. On a Saturday night, there was no line or wait. The restaurant was full, but not overly crowded or anything. The service is good overall. It was a little on the slower side, but I don't think they have a lot of staff and the restaurant was fairly full, so can't really complain. The food is high quality. Very authentic. The udon in particular is really good. The soup base was kind of thick, and very tasty! We had several other appetizers as well, all of which were delicious. One person in our group ordered the breakfast, and it looked really good as well. Overall, if you're looking for solid Japanese food, or want a traditional Japanese breakfast, give this place a try! read more

What a great place, which seem to be famous for their Japanese breakfast combos. We came here in the evening. It was my first time here and I wasn't aware of any restaurant in this area which offers Japanese breakfast. I will definitely try that soon, because the combinations of the small dishes looks tasty. Anyway, that evening I chose katsudon which really is one of my favorites. The katsudon was prepared in a cute little pan. The meat was soft and covered with juicy scrambled eggs and onions. The rice which comes with it was served in a beautiful box. It all looked very nice and different from other restaurants I have visit here so far. Also this dish comes with a small salad and miso soup. It was awesome. We also had the ginger pork chop. It was also very good. When we arrived, it was still beer happy hour (until 7pm) and I chose to take a Kirin. For only $2.99 definitely worth it. Our waiter was very friendly and calm, even when the restaurant was full. My family and I have been coming here for years! Mainly for their Japanese-style breakfast, and boy you are in for a treat! You have various sets to choose from A-D and it all comes with something different. I tend to go with Set C because it comes with egg, that you can choose how it's made (dashimaki, over easy, or raw egg), miso soup, rice, nori, and a choice of meats. You can choose Salmon, Saba, or Steak. I usually chose the Saba, but this time I ordered all three! Yeah I was that hungry! Salmon was super tender and delicious! Saba was a bit drier than I'd normally like it and the steak was tender and had the charred taste, which was delightful. It's like the perfect breakfast to get and I wish every city has a place like this! Service is great, sometimes they are busy and you will have to wait a bit. It truly is a hidden gem in Gardena and a lot of loyal customers in the morning. Some just sit and the workers already know what to bring out! It's such a huge variety! But the menu items they have are very unique.For example, their broiled eel comes in a cute little...ladle? It was amazing and of the best eel dishes I've had. I forgot which ones but I've tried 2 of the steaks here, they were both amazing and I assumed they'd taste similar. Nope, tasted soooo different with different textures. Interesting experience! I usually get the breakfast set D. Comes with your choice of protein, type of egg, natto, miso soup, rice,seaweed, and pickles. Idk if they make their own natto or not..but it's delicious and amazing, best natto I've had from a restaurant so far. Also their tofu is so silky and delicious as well. I think it's a very filling "breakfast' (honestly to me this is like a lunch or dinner meal, I'm full the whole day lol)...worth your money. It's pretty healthy too, you won't feel guilty after eating it. This is the first restaurant I've been to that offers this type of breakfast food. I love the barley tea they serve you. Tucked in a quiet corner of a busy strip mall, is an unassuming Japanese restaurant serving a traditional Japanese breakfast. This is something you can't find very often because not a lot of places even do this. When you walk in, you notice the old-style wood furnishings of a Japanese tea house. The display along the side wall looks like it's been untouched for decades. But it does show the art of Japanese wood working...how they did things without nails. It's not something you see everyday, but it's pretty cool nonetheless. The reverence for the old ways here is charming. You are welcomed with some great barley tea in stoneware cups and given a cloth-bound menu covering all of their options from breakfast to dinner. I've only ever been here for breakfast, but if the quality is any indication of what the other offerings might be like, then I'm sure you can come here anytime of the day for a solid meal. For about $10, you can set Breakfast Set "C." It comes with fluffy steamed Japanese rice, Japanese pickled vegetables, small rectangles of nori, Miso soup with slices of fried tofu and onions, cold tofu topped with Bonito flakes and green onion, and your choice of egg and protein. The egg comes in raw, scrambled, sunny-side up, or dashimaki tamago (cold, slightly sweetened egg omelette). For protein, you have a choice of steak, grilled mackerel, grilled Spanish mackerel, or grilled salmon. I always get the dashimaki and regular grilled mackerel. The dashimaki reminds me of the fantastic tamago omelette that you get at a high-end sushi restaurant because it's slightly sweet but very well-cooked and they layer it in a design so it's got a pretty center. The regular grilled mackerel is perfectly cooked (it still has the bones in it, so beware) and the hot grill makes some of the skin crispy...it's got plenty of fat so the grated daikon on the side helps cut through the fat (make sure you season the daikon with a little bit of shoyu. The miso is served piping hot and is quite flavorful...the surprise is the slices of fried tofu and sliced onion. The cold tofu needs a touch of shoyu in order for it to really sing, but I love the green onions and Bonito flakes on top. The rectangles of nori can be used to stuff with rice, fish, and a touch of the daikon-shoyu mix...a baby roll to stuff in your mouth. It is a lot of food, but you are thoroughly stuffed by the end of your meal. I usually don't even eat lunch after this breakfast. The service here is efficient and easy-going. They want you to enjoy your food, so they don't check on you at all. You will need to flag them down for refills of tea. It's a great experience. FYI - if you need a sweet treat after, Beard Papa cream puffs and Phoenix Food Boutique are in the same plaza a few doors down. This breakfast is pretty savory, so you may want a palate cleanser. read more

So this classic Japanese restaurant now specializes in Hokkaido-style miso ramen. The boss lady said an established ramen restaurant chef gave them the recipe for their ramen... we were confused cause someone made a review for Hanabi but it's actually ramen for Fukugawa. So yeah, we have a new contender for best miso ramen in LA and especially Gardena / Torrance. Good god. What a surprise. Fukugawa makes an especially great traditional Japanese-style breakfast, and now a very solid bowl of ramen. We had both the Bohiro Ramen and Orochon (Spicy) Ramen, both miso-based. My Bohiro broth had a balanced umami flavor; perfectly salty and welcoming, complimented with green onions, white onions, bean sprouts, boiled kombu and a slice of dried seaweed. The chashu was stellar. Unctuous, tender, porky goodness. Not many places take the chashu seriously! Oh, and the flavored egg was good as well. It was a bit cold (I'm assuming they refrigerate them) but letting it soak in the very hot broth warmed it up. They're soft-boiled, my favorite style! Lastly, the noodle. It was the perfect conduit for the cloudy miso broth; yellow crinkly noodles (which I rarely oooh-ahhh at) that were chewy, stayed up in the broth and actually tasted straight up delicious. I came in for lunch and had their Monday lunch special. It consists of Pork Cutlet Jyu and a half Udon or Soba. The Pork Cutlet Jyu is a sort of deconstructed Katsudon. The katsu, eggs, onions and sauce came in a pan separate from the rice. I immediately slid the whole mess onto my rice and, poof, I had a Katsudon. It also comes with miso soup. It's a substantial lunch but with tax and tip leaves little out of a $20 bill. Still its a good lunch. Next time I might just get the Pork Cutlet Jyu by itself or perhaps one of the Japanese Breakfast combos. read more

We recently had our mother's 90th birthday party for 30 guests at Fukagawa, and everything was excellent! The marketing manager Anthony was so easy to work with; he and the staff were accommodating, professional, and very kind. Since our party was so large, the restaurant allowed us to hold our party on a Saturday from 2:00-5:00, when they are usually closed to prep for dinner hours. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves, and we were able to move tables around and put up decorations. Since we had a program, we got everyone's main dish orders before the event and the guests only needed to figure out their drink orders when they arrived. The ambience was beautiful and the space was so ideal for our party. Everything went like clockwork. I would definitely do another event at Fukagawa in the future! Our guests were very pleased with the food, and a great time was had by all. Everyone commented on how delicious the food was. I ordered the Kaki (oyster) Fry combo with 1/2 soba, and it was fantastic. (One of the reasons we picked Fukagawa was that I'd been to an event there in 2022, and my dinner was delicious. Their restroom also has a baby changing station for those with young ones. Very nice, considering some newer places don't have a changing station (wtf?). Traditional Japanese breakfast definitely strays from the Western tradition of bacon and eggs, pancakes and waffles and in fact, is more like a meal you'd have for lunch or even dinner. In doing research to find out what restaurant serves a Japanese breakfast in the LA area, one place came up over and over and that was Fukagawa in the city of Gardena. So one early morning, a few members from my dining group made the trek out with me to this South Bay restaurant. Fukagawa is in a large shopping plaza and was a little difficult to find because it couldn't be viewed from the parking lot. It was literally tucked away in the corner at the end of the walkway, which started at the super market. Once you walk in and are seated, the entire breakfast menu can be seen in a small plastic holder. Basically, you have A through D choices. If you choose A, you get a bowl of rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, a seaweed sheet and a raw egg. What wasn't mentioned was a small bowl of cold tofu as well as tamagoyaki, a sweetened rolled omelet that was also included. Choice B was everything you got with choice A, but with Natto. Choice C was A + broiled fish or beef steak. Choice D was A + B + C. I opted for Choice D with the grilled fish, which turned out to be a salmon. One thing that I wish I did beforehand was to get some more information about how to enjoy some of the various components that were on my tray like which I found here and here. First, let me mention something about Japanese etiquette. Apparently, it's custom to have the bowl of miso your right and the rice to your left. I don' t know why, so if any of you know the reason, please leave a comment. When it came to the dried seaweed, I knew that it was to be eaten with the rice. What I didn't know was that if you swirled the seaweed in your miso soup or dip it in soy sauce, it'll soften; hence, it'll be easier to wrap around the rice and eat it that way. That makes perfect sense now. When it came to the natto, I was actually dreading it. I've tried it 3 different times at 3 other restaurants, but just can't seem to get over the "slimy" texture, but I thought I'd give it one more try. One spoonful and it still turned me off; however, one of my dining partners tried eating it with rice and she said it was better that way. I gave it a go and while it was a bit better, I can still say without a doubt that natto is just not for me. However, my dining buddy was on the right track. I later read that one way to enjoy the natto is to season it with soy sauce and karashi mustard and yes, place some on your steamed rice and eat them both together. One thing I did know about ahead of the time was what to do with the raw egg and I actually read that as part of a Yelp review. Someone else in our group decided to go the raw egg route and here's how it works. Simply, break the egg in a bowl, add soy sauce, mix and then pour over your rice. Be sure your rice is really hot because it's that heat that help to cook that egg so that it's not completely raw and then enjoy. If you happen to order the fish, it can be eaten on its own or it can be cut in pieces and added to your rice bowl or even mixed in the rice before you wrap it with the seaweed wrapper. Last, the tamagoyaki can be eaten with or without soy sauce or grated daikon. Of course, these are all just suggestions, but if you're going to eat a meal traditional to a certain country, you might as well go all out. The breakfast at Fukagawa was a definite departure from what I normally have in the AM, but other than the natto, I could see myself enjoying this type of meal on a more regular basis. Although there are a lot of components, the food seems lighter and not as heavy as standard eggs and bacon fare nor is it as mundane as cereal and milk. Given that Fukagawa is way across town from me, it's doubtful that I'll be having a traditional Japanese breakfast as much as I would like. However, armed with the knowledge I have now, I think the meal will be even better, if I ever make a trip back. read more

This is the only place I've seen that serves Japanese breakfast, and it's pretty lit. Fukugawa is a cozy place with a family restaurant vibe, and they serve even cozier food. I had the Breakfast Combo C with the mackerel and dashi maki egg. I liked that the combo comes with a variety of dishes because it makes the meal very balanced. The only negative comment I have is that the breakfast was a little on the pricy side, but I didn't mind because the food was great. soba, udon, and a whole lot more tucked into pacific market I have been eyeing this place in Pacific Market Place for years but have so many other choices for Japanese restaurants closer to where I live in Torrance, so I have been putting it off. So finally, while Azuma was closed for renovations earlier this year I decided to give Fukugawa a try. It is very rustic and woody inside with a musty aroma, like maybe how a roadside inn smelled during the Edo period in Japan w/o the charcoal burning stove of course. There is a private room in the back but much of the decor is falling into disrepair. The server came right away and offered up the very large menus with a number of combinations with Soba and Udon served hot and cold. They have a special menu out front and a sign with the word Soba on it. The server was able to get me a nama biru immediately while I mulled over the many options on the menu. They also have a hanabi menu with 4 types of Ramen, including something called orochon and bihoro ramen. Going there for soba I ordered the Ten-zaru soba which was a pretty small portion of everything but the perfect size and number of tempura. There was a mushroom, shishito, piman, and an ebi. The tempura was pretty average, but with Ten-zaru the tempura is more of a side dish to the soba. The soba was perfectly chewy but wasn't as good as ichiman bamboo garden in Torrance. The tsuyu was nice to slurp up the noodles with. Slurping soba is more important than slurping ramen since soba really depends on getting the sauce in with the noodles. If you think it is rude, get over it and yourself. Trust me, you aren't going to hell for slurping noodles. When we were finished the server came over and was pretty chatty since it was pretty quiet for a Thursday. One saving grace was that we were the only non-Japanese speaking couple in the place. Fukagawa is probably one of the most underrated traditional Japanese restaurants out here in the South Bay, and that's saying something considering the fact that there are tons of Japanese restaurants in this area. The waitresses are one of the sweetest people you'd ever meet; every time I walk inside, I always get greeted with a warm welcome. What's awesome about this place is that you're able to order breakfast or lunch specials during dinner time. I like Japanese food for lunch and I like Japanese food for dinner, so why shouldn't I like Japanese food for breakfast? No reason, as I found here at Fukagawa on a Wednesday morning! For 11 bucks, I got breakfast combo C, with dashimaki tamago, a marinated tofu dish with bonito flakes (similar to agedashi, but not fried), a small bowl of miso soup, tsukemono, and a neat cut of mackerel over rice. My gluttonous American belly was not full, but it was satisfied, and happy with the neat, compact balance. Carb-heavy breakfasts always make me sluggish, but this breakfast fueled me through 2 hours of climbing at the nearby climbing gym. The marinated tofu was sour - probably a few days past its use-by date, or maybe stored too warm. But everything else was solid. Tamago is always so delicious for something that looks so simple (but really isn't - try making it at home, it's difficult!). The crispy-skinned mackerel flaked apart over the rice, leaving a nice dry fishy stew and crackly surprise bites with skin. I got to eat both my fish's skin and my dining companion's fish's skin: yay! While I do think it's a bit overpriced, and also that it's stupid to charge more for the same food at a different time of day, there aren't many places around that I know of to get this sort of thing, so I'll put up with it. read more

Natsukashiiiiii! Very nostalgic of my visits to Japan! Not many places serve a traditional Japanese breakfast and Fukagawa does it to perfection. Many reviews show the different choices offered so I won't go into details but their D special really satisfied my cravings and reminded me of my wife's family's cooking in Chiba. Rice with Egg any style, Natto, Fish, Tsukemono, Hiyayakko, Miso Shiru, Nori, and more Rice. You can't beat this from any stand point. It's healthy, homemade, and satisfying. The service was good. (could have been a touch better IMHO) The ladies were all so nice but we were pretty much alone in the restaurant and we had to wait a while for them to come around at times. Not a huge deal. They made up for it with their attention to other details and friendliness. They show Japanese variety shows on the tube in the Tatami room which is visible to most of the dining room. This is always interesting to watch, more so if you understand what's going on. It's good to have a bilingual wife. :) Gotta try the udon, soba, and katsu according to the other reviews. Looks and sounds delish. This place is tucked away in the corner behind Mottonai Ramen and Mikawaya Manjuya so look carefully. It is easy to miss. Good stuff! They have a cool all-you-an-eat shabu shabu special, which should be enough to pummel anyone into heavenly submission. Other than being chased off when it was close to closing time, the service was good and the staff was really friendly. Stupid me, I kept messing with the heat control on the stove thing to turn it on, and kept turning it off, and didn't pay attention to how the waitress fired it back on (I seemed to be paying more attention to my XL Kirin I think). So yeah, the third time she had to turn it back on and was getting ticked, I finally saw how to unfuxor it myself. Everything they brought was good, fresh. But then again how can you mess up raw meat? I guess I shouldn't ask because I'm sure someplace somewhere does a damn good job of messing that up. So yeah, no complaints at all about this place! On another visit I got some udon, that was pretty good as well. I noticed they have breakfast starting super early, one of these days I will have to come down and check that out. Everything had a good flavor, and as I went for another bite, my boyfriend stopped me. He said "Don't look" and I didn't, and was horrified and dropped my food. Then he rose and went to go talk to the management, and when he came back to our table I asked him what's wrong. Then he finally told me that there was a cockroach crawling on my plate..
