Although they are known for their doughnuts I have yet to try one. Their buffalo sandwich is crispy and just the right amount of spicy. The cheeseburger is fresh and melts in your mouth. Cool hip place with an unique vibe and good food. It was a tough choice between a burger or chicken sandwich but ended up with a single Hero Burger but would recommend doing the double instead. The bun is very good and fresh tasting but kind of swallowed up the single patty. The hero sauce was similar to a thousand island or sauce you'd find on a Big Mac but better. Not a lot of side choices but I sampled some fries from the table and they were tasty. They have a wide variety of specialty donuts but are kind of pricy. We had the cookies & cream donut and it was plenty for wife and me to split for dessert. There's not a lot of room inside and it gets very crowded so try to come at an off time. My husband and I went to Hero's new location in Homewood on a recent Sunday for lunch. I was surprised at the large menu, I guess I haven't been to one of the larger locations. Lots of things sounded good but we both opted for classic burgers and fries. I love that they use Duke's mayo, it's the only one we use at home. We ordered at the counter and since the inside was crowded took our number to a table outside. In the shade it was comfortable. It wasn't long before the burgers came out. They were great and we enjoyed them and I was pleased that the fries were still so hot, so many times when you order fries they are not pipping hot when you get them. It wasn't clear if we were to bus our table so we just tossed the trash and left the dishes on the table. My family participated in a bike ride with a huge group of families through the streets of Homewood and decided to stop in Hero Doughnuts afterwards for a late breakfast. First time here as we have only tried their doughnuts at Big Bad Breakfast on a weekend. First, the place is so cute! Inside and out. The doughnuts are huge. There were quite a few flavors to choose from in the bake case. All looked amazing. Boston cream, cinnamon sugar, Blueberry Crumble... Swoon!!! I remember reading a review on here suggesting the burger. It was before 11:00 and the double cheeseburger & other lunch type sandwiches were available!! I love a place that will let you break the rule of "only breakfast in the a.m. or only lunch after 11:00 a.m. Looking at the menu we had so much trouble deciding.... The doughnuts are around $4 each (justified in my opinion due to size and taste). Mini doughnuts are also available for less. My kids decided to share the Super Crunch chicken sammy. Hubs got the double cheeseburger & I got a breakfast sammy with sausage, cheese & egg over easy on a brioche bun. Y'all!!! I can't even..... This place should be called Heaven because all the food was perfection. All the food!!! The sandwiches come with their signature crack sauce and pepper jam. Both compliment everything perfectly & I wished I could take both the crack sauce & pepper jam home in buckets to ration out and put on everything at home while trying to recreate the Hero breakfast situation. We had the perfect meal to top off a lovely morning bike ride in Homewood. Their Nitro Cold Brew coffee is delicious as well. The only complaint... it comes in a very small cup for $4.50. Ouch!! There are only a few tables to sit inside. However, we really enjoyed it. Overall, I'd say this place is awesome as far as taste, but for us it is considered an occasional treat as our wallets were much lighter when we walked out. They also have awesome sandwiches on fresh brioche buns and serve the best coffee I've ever had (from local coffee roasters Domestique). I have to admit, I started out as a Hero Doughnuts hater. I just couldn't/wouldn't for a second believe that there could be a donut place out there that may be as good as my regular donut spot. Boy, was I wrong. Hero Doughnuts is a great spot in Homewood to get something called a croissant-style doughnut that's a little nugget of heaven. They're so soft and packed with flavor. I'm partial to the Maple Sea Salt doughnut with a delectable maple glaze with little flakes of sea salt. It's just a great combination of salty and sweet. They're huge doughnuts so I would definitely split one with someone or just have it as a big treat for yourself (I sometimes have one for breakfast). Other than their brick and mortar location, they do drop-offs at restaurants throughout the Birmingham Metro Area and they sometimes have a stand at Pepperplace. It's a lighter filling than the typical custard and has chocolate on top that's delicious. Also, got some of the doughnut holes which were very light, fluffy, and tasty. I highly recommend walking across the street to the park and enjoying your Doughnuts. Parking is very tight in front of the shop, but there's decent parking on the street around the park. I'll start with the good: there were two to-go 15 minute parking spots available, which was lovely as the location we visited was on a city block with only street parking. My kids got the sprinkle and cookies and cream donuts and said they both enjoyed them. We also got some kolaches. I'm from Texas and what we call kolaches are not the same as what we were given, so for the sake of clarity let me describe them: a large bratwurst was wrapped in cheese and flaky, buttery pastry. There was a spicy, jalepeño option and a regular option. We chose the regular and the brat itself was still kind of spicy for my kids. I enjoyed it. I liked the food. Cons: there was a lot of packaging for getting it to go. It was a little expensive for what we got. A plain vanilla iced donut with rainbow sprinkles was $2.50. The biggest con for me personally, however, was the attitude the staff had about the local homeless population. Which I was giving my order the cashier said something derogatory about a homeless man outside the store and when I didn't agree she and other staff members got snippy and short about it and were low key rude the rest of the time my children and I waited on our orders.
