This place is a dump, it only takes cash, it looks the same as every other place in DC Chinatown, but if you don't go, you are missing out. It has an extensive "authentic" menu and also has some Americanized standbys. All of it is done quite well. I typically guage the quality/authenticity of Chinese restaurants by how the food tastes and by the ratio of Chinese people to non-Chinese people eating there. Is this racist? Maybe, but that's what I do, and lets face it, you probably do that, too. At Full Kee, I am typically either the only non-Chinese person, or among one of the very few non-Chinese people. I took a star off for the fact that it is cash only an there is a viable second option in Eat First that takes credit. Also, I wouldn't recommend doing the lunch special. The reason the prices are so cheap for said special is because the food is clearly of a different quality. It reminded me of a Chinese buffet in Durham, North Carolina. After making the wise decision to leave the Quackers and frat wannabes at the Irish Channel behind and set out on the streets of Chinatown for food, I settled for the option right across the street - Full Kee restaurant. The wife decided she wasn't up for eating out, so I took a quick look at the menu and made a to-go order. Ordering Chinese for the wife is easy - her go-to dishes are Shrimp Lo Mein and Crab Rangoon. (Although I have gotten her turned on to Chow Fun recently) For me, not so much ... I hadn't been to an authentic Cantonese-style Chinese restaurant since I lived in Gaithersburg. (Yes, there's one up there) My go-to BITD was Shrimp Dumpling soup, but I opted for Roast Duck Noodle Soup instead. My wife didn't believe me when I was telling her how exponentially better the Chinese food would be compared to what she was used to getting. Her Lo Mein and Crab Rangoon were about the best she has ever had. The duck in my soup was a tad on the bony and fatty side, but the broth was spot on. Hindsight had me wishing that I went with the shrimp dumplings, but I had no regrets with choosing Full Kee over the other options. Bare bones but very good! Came here for lunch to try this Hong Kong style food and I was very pleased. While the place was packed and people steadily coming in for lunch one lady had control of the whole operation. No electronic buzzers here, just a "how many?" and a "okay? and she walked away to refill drinks, serve dishes and pay checks. Now that's a talented woman. Once we ordered the food came freakishly fast! I got the duck noodle soup ($7) with veggies, which actually turned out to be just cabbage and an egg roll of course. I have always passed Full Kee by to go to other places bc of the way it looks. It's in a shopping center with no other Asian places so for whatever reason that made me think that it would be too 'american chinese'. After going now a handful of times, i have to say, it's delicious and the best spicy pork chop I've ever had. I've had the roast pork noodle soup with dumplings, chow foon, deep fried intestines, beef brisket noodle soup and tonight the spicy pork chop and salt fish chicken fried rice. All so good!!!!!! I'm a long-time customer and fan of the Wheaton location, but today I finally ate at the Chinatown store. I had a very simple lunch with my sister - steamed dumplings (3 very large ones for $3) and we split a plate of Szechuan Beef ($10.95, dinner portion). The dumplings were very, very good; the beef dish was good, and even subtle for something as traditional as Schezuan Beef, but a the sauce was a little too thick for my personal taste. That said, the beef was tender and delicious, and the vegetables clearly fresh and crisp. It was a very good meal for two people less than $20. As other reviews have said, they're famous for their shrimp dumpling soup, and that is highly recommended. The zanier, more exciting fare (pig's knuckle, spice-with-head-on, etc.) is also recommended. The standard Chinese dishes are probably the least recommended thing at Full Kee, and are still good. Worth going to, even among the various options in Chinatown. And if you find yourself in Wheaton/Silver Spring area of Maryland, make sure to visit their location there! read more

To begin with, don't really expect a good server since you know, it's Chinese restaurant; but still, never seen this place empty, always crowded, expected to wait for like 15mins to get seated. It's good. Twice as good as Half Kee. Although the restaurant is a bit on the pricey side, even for your standard issue round-eye fare, Full Kee offers interesting things I have never seen on a menu. I felt intrepid and opted for a dish on the whiteboard: a hot pot containing Chinese sausage, and . . . frogs. Since I'm sure many readers haven't had any culinary encounters of the amphibian kind, I think it's worthwhile to describe eating the frogs themselves. The taste and texture is like a combination of chicken and fish. "Chish," if you will, or maybe "fishen." It's good, but an abundance of small bones means you have to work for your meal. The frogs are served chopped into pieces, not whole, so PETA types may take some consolation in the fact that the hapless hoppers were killed prior to being tossed into a red-hot wok. Or maybe not, I don't know. The frogs are served in a piping-hot pot with that distinctively-sweet Chinese sausage and earthy shiitake mushrooms, flavored with whole garlic cloves and fresh ginger. The combination was delicious, unique (to me, at least), and the ingredients seemed fresh and high-quality. I half-expected something to leap out of the pot during my meal. Service was OK. It took a while to be seated, and the waiters could have been more attentive about filling drinks, but I didn't experience any out-and-out rudeness like some of the other reviews mentioned. Overall, at $17 before drink, tax, and tip, the meal wasn't cheap. However, based on the uniqueness and quality of this meal, I think it's worth it if you stick to the more adventurous items. After attending a Yelp event in downtown DC, my friends and I were hungry. Being in the area and with a couple of ladies in-the-know about such establishments, I decided to take their advice and check this place out. Unfortunately, this Full Kee turned out to be anything but what my friends had told me. I'm one of those who actively seeks out hole in the wall/dive eateries, and from the looks of this place inside and out, this was going to be a special experience. Our menus were handed to us and what laid inside was good ole M-E-R-K-I-N Chinese cuisine. I've been to multiple Chinatowns on both coasts of the United States; I've been to China. I was hoping to grab some authentically yummy food from a dive restaurant that has hanging ducks in the window (usually a good sign). Instead we received decent orange beef and a pepper steak that instantly tasted of spices that had sat too long in the rack. Way disappointing! Maybe I was too excited from my friend/fellow Yelper's suggestion, or maybe I was too anxious to try something in the bowels of what used to be DC's Chinatown (now considered Gallery Place). The wait staff, however, are nice and friendly. The food is ....."meh". The prices are high for being an "authentic" Chinese dive restaurant. The Hong Kong Shrimp dumpling soup had a slightly funny smell to it. Now, their half of Soy Chicken was pretty good. My dinner companion..he doesn't talk much... this is his take on Full Kee.. I went to Full Kee on October 5th 2019. We pulled as usual, my wife said the light are off. I was REALLY unhappy when I saw that sign on the door.. I was ready to get my Shrimp Dumpling Noodle Soup and Seafood Pan Fried Noodles on. My wife would get the Soy Chicken Noodle Soup and Singapore Noodles. The service was awful and the food was bland. General Tso's Chicken was not spicy, as advertised, and it barely had any taste. The meal is served with white rice, which you cannot sub for anything else, and there's only one waitress for the downstairs area. As soon as we sat down the person immediately ask what we wanted. We said we needed to look at the menus.. it was 10 minutes before someone came back and even then we had to flag her down. Drink refills were nonexistent. All in all a total waste of a meal. I've tried eating here many a time because it's in Chinatown and every now and then I have a hankering for Hong Kong style food and I don't have transport into VA or MD for better. Food here is passable. I've ordered all kinds of things, usually it's too salty or overcooked - but it's cheap and if you are really truly craving Chinese food, it'll tide you over til you get something decent. I last had the wonton and roast pork noodle. The broth was a little too salty, the pork was surprising flavorful, but the wonton tasted like it was made of old meat. I came here on a cold day. I wanted chicken and rice. My coworker referred me here. She told me that it was good. I took her advice, called in my order, and picked in up in about 15 minutes. The place isn't appealing at all. It smells really fishy inside. The lady at the front was moving super slow. She was doing some kind of paperwork, and then she handled two other customers. I was in there for about 10 minutes waiting for her to finish doing eveything she had to do. I asked for more soy sauce, and it took her like a minute to move and get to the soy sauce. The food was OK. I got general tso chicken. I thought the rice would have more vegetables but they didn't. The broccoli was super hard. I just threw those out. I only order one dish here as the inconsistency with all the other dishes leaves me frustrated and hungry. Like many other restaurants in Chinablock, you have to know exactly what to order and what not to order. And ever since this place reopened after the renovations, I only order the Hong Kong Style Shrimp Dumpling Soup. The one with only dumplings (don't get duped by the added noodle option, which just adds mediocre egg noodle to replace the much better dumplings). My four star ranking only takes into account this soup and nothing else. Except maybe the price. The broth is pretty standard. Its a savory chicken stock that isn't particularly special. That is why this gets docked a star. The dumplings are freshly made in house -- thin fresh egg wrappers wrapped around explodingly juicy shrimp, chives, and a shitake-like mushroom. Really, just eat the dumplings. I don't even eat the broth. The broth just helps the dumplings stay juicy. For under $6, these are enough dumplings to make a meal for me. Just be careful, the first couple are always a little too hot, and the exploding juices can scald your mouth. I have eaten other things at Full Kee, like the conch and the chinese broccoli which is pretty hard to mess up. Both were fine, but not spectacular. I'd rather head to China Garden for chinese food though. Their americanized dishes do seem at least of a better quality than the typical takeout joint, but I have no idea as I don't eat typical takeout food. All I know is that the shrimp dumplings are a small piece of happiness and the only consistent thing on the menu. read more

I was pretty disappointed with the food at Full Kee. While it has a number of good reviews, I feel that the food I ate didn't live up to them. I had a pretty standard meal, the name I cannot recall, but it was essentially beef with vegetables over rice. Granted, I wasn't expecting an explosion of flavor, but I thought it would at least taste like something! It was tasteless, bland, and overpriced. I went with a few people and we all had different meals, so I tried some of theirs to see if I had just chosen poorly. Nope, all of the dishes sucked. The highlight of the night was a plate of perfectly-ripe oranges, but I can't really give Full Kee the props for that one. The service was decent and quick, but I went to Full Kee at 8PM on a Saturday night, and while it was busy it wasn't bustling. I hate to say it, but I was a little skeptical of a restaurant that can easily seat 7 without reservations. I don't really know what I was expecting, going to a Chinese restaurant in DC's "Chinatown," but I certainly won't be coming back to Full Kee.. at least not while sober. Disappointed in this place! I had high hope for Full Kee after reading the reviews and seeing the wait staff. After sitting down, I realize they're not friendly at all (I wasn't looking for a 5 star services), but hope to be serve better than slammed my drink and food onto the table, had to ask for several times before refilled my drink and stared at me eat. In my experience, this is the best food in Chinatown. I'm never quite sure how to rate hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but seeing as I haven't had any better food at a more polished Chinese restaurant, then I won't knock them for appearances. So I'm a big fan of street food and hole in the wall restaurants, but this place is gross. I ordered a lunch special to go and gave specific instructions that I can't eat soy. I was ordering a dish without soy in it, so that wasn't a problem, but I double and triple checked. As I sat and waited for my food, I took in the surroundings. Floors that were blackened in areas. Walls that look like they hadn't ever been wiped down (and really needed it), ripped furniture, and some very sad and withered looking ducks hanging in the window. I saw servers eating, handling cash, blowing their noses, picking their teeth. I saw no hand washing. I saw someone from the kitchen go to the bathroom -- with his apron still on. I started to get worried. I got my food, and went off on my way. After a bit, I noticed the bad smell coming from the bag. Really bad. When I got to where I was going, I opened it and found that they'd given me fried rice instead of white rice. It was meat fried rice (I ordered a vegetarian dish), and it was covered with soy (I'd specified no soy, as I'm allergic). In addition to it not being what I ordered, or would want to eat, it smelled REALLY bad. I can't emphasize this enough. I don't want to be over dramatic about it, but it was not just unappealing, but nauseating. I'll save you the particular description of what it smelled like. I took it back, and kindly explained to them the mix up. This was a big problem for them, and a lot of back and forth happened before they agreed to change it out. In the process, one of the women (who'd been handling cash and eating) touched my food. They tried to give me the same vegetables back, with different rice. i told them that this wasn't acceptable. They brought it back after a minute, and told me it was different. When I opened it up to eat it a few minutes later, it was clear that these were the same sad, soggy green beans they'd originally served me. I was legitimately afraid that I would get sick from this food. I would absolutely not recommend this restaurant. read more

I went here with a couple of friends, and honestly this is one of the better Chinese restaurants. That says really something since I am really peculiar about Asian food. The menu was in 3 languages: Chinese, Vietnamese and English. Since I am Vietnamese, it was easier for me to order exactly what I wanted. And I did get exactly what I ordered. I have to say that the service is not so great here. It took them a long time to refill my glass of water and get the check. My friends and I could not finish our portion so we had it in to go boxes. Another wonderful meal at Full Key last night. My roommate and I were looking for a quick meal before going to a show. She mentioned a craving for Chinese food and I knew I had to take her to Full Key. Being a native Washingtonian, it has been a family favorite for years - I've been eating here for at least a decade. Roommate looked vaguely apprehensive when we walked up because yes, it's a hole in the wall, and yes, there are ducks hanging in the window. We sat down immediately and glanced over the card of house specials on the table. Those items are a little more adventurous than we could handle last night, but speaking from experience they're worth taking the plunge if you're in the mood. We were also given tea as soon as we sat down, which isn't exactly unique to Full Key, but was pleasant nonetheless. My roommate ended up with an eggrole and sesame chicken and I got egg drop soup and eggplant in garlic sauce. It all came very quickly and was delicious and bracing on a cold night. Our service was very efficient, the bill was low (~32 for two for dinner with apps). Decore was not the shiniest you'll find in Chinatown but that's not really why you would come here anyway. After having several bad experiences with Chinese food in Chinatown, I had completely written off trying anything new in the area. But, my office is close to Chinatown and today I was craving some Chinese food, particularly Hot and Sour Soup. I would love to say that this restaurant didn't disappoint, but it definitely did. I ordered the General Tso's chicken and Hot and Sour Soup for takeout during lunch. When I walked into the restaurant, it had a very strange smell and I was glad that I would not be dining in. As I got back to my office, I was very excited to try this (potentially good) Chinese food. I first tried the Hot and Sour Soup. The worst Hot and Sour soup I have ever had. Even Wok and Roll nearby does a better job. It tasted burnt and was very goopy. The accompanying crunchy bits to put in it were also not very good and tasted stale. On to the General Tso's. This was one dish I was confident about because I had seen all of the positive reviews for it. Wrong. It was not crispy at all and even had parts that were too tough to chew. I will not be returning to Full Kee and so my search continues for a decent Chinese restaurant in DC. read more

We went for dinner after touring DC all day. I was worried about some 1 and 2 star ratings, but then saw that it was because of a hair in the food or something. Very casual - crap decor - so don't take for a first date. If you want authentic Chinese, this is one good place. It reminded us of the House of Nan King in San Francisco. We basically told the people that we are in town visiting and that we want to order several of the dishes that they feel are good.
