Straight up black tea with sugar/milk. I also liked their mapo tofu (flavorful and tiny bit spicy), sesame balls (very fresh and soft! Red bean/azuki paste inside...), moon cakes (lots of variation like lotus paste, egg yolk, etc), and egg tarts (decent and flaky crust). I've tried their congee and it was just ok as it's not very thick. I preferred some homemade congee though. Their service is straight forward and punctual if you called to order. Really simple small restaurant. I find that this is more of a take away place, but sitting down I got to really absorb the quaint nature of the restaurant and appreciate the menu items they did have. They are most known for their mooncakes so do take advantage of buying this hard-to-make pastry. I pass by here at work often and see their roast case and its so tempting. Although there isnt really a table service, this quickly became a low frills place. All the dimsum we did recieve came in take out containers, but they were all well made and flavorful. I especially enjoyed their scallion pancake! It was so flakey I had to take a picture of the thinness of each layer. I really love the braise of their chicken feet, its a great flavor and it came soaking in its braising sauce. I would come here for a hot meal, its quick and simple, and mostly affordable. I specifically asked the man at the counter about the sesame tofu - two questions - is it a sesame sauce and are there vegetables in it? He answered yes to both. Sesame tofu comes to the table - a sweet sticky sauce and the only sesame is sesame seeds on top. Veggies? Two pieces of broccoli. If a waiter had brought the food to me and I hadn't already paid for it, I would have refused it as it was not what he told me it was. When we were done I went up to the counter and told the man I was disappointed and that as far as I was concerned he had not answered my questions very truthfully. He acted like he didn't understand what I was saying. A woman who worked there came forward and said she could answer my question. I expressed my disappointment to her to which her reply was lots of people order the sesame tofu and think it is good and I am the only one who complains and added "Merry Christmas". I didn't ask for my money back - my complaint was that I asked about the dish and his answer was misleading at best. All I expected was an acknowledgement of my opinion. I thought her attitude was rather unpleasant and she definitely didn't feel any need to say anything like "sorry you didn't like it". She treated me as if I was the problem. We also ordered the General Tso chicken, scallion pancakes, veggie dumplings, Pad Thai with tofu, string beans and endamane. The chicken was good, the Pad Thai ok (bland) and the pancakes and dumplings were not worth the price of admission - sticky dough with not much taste. String beans were good, the endamane was good but bland. Had I not asked in advance about the sesame tofu I would just let it all go - what irritates me about the place is the answer to my questions were not accurate and their attitude socks. We have been going to DC Chinatown for forty years - it is unfortunately a shadow of it's past. However, the quality, service, prices and most importantly, taste of the food makes up for it all. I love Chinese food, but wasn't that hungry so I ordered a bunch of dumplings: pork (fried, 6pcs), chicken (fried, 6pcs) and shrimp. Each of them, delicious. While I was there, there were so many DoorDash and UberEats drivers coming in and out to pick up food and it's just so telling of how delicious the food was. I have to say that the boba was decent. I think it'll satisfy the craving because the bubbles themselves were good. The tea however, I could say otherwise. The scallion pancakes were fantastic. With that said, everything BG else I've tried was just fine. As another Yelp reviewer put it, something's missing taste wise in the food. However, I am no expert in Chinese food. The first time I went I got the pork buns, egg tart, and scallion pancakes. As I said I loved the scallion pancakes. I got them to go and they were pretty oily so when I reheated them in the pan I didn't need to add any oil. The egg tart was good too, it hit the craving but I've had better. The second time I went I got fish congee and breadstick and moon pie with egg. I had never had either before so I was excited to branch out. It was not my thing. The place is sizeable and quiet during our late afternoon visit on Easter Sunday. The dim sum here was really yummy! I loved the shumai and pork buns. The shumai were stuffer very full of meat. The pork buns were huge! And they were filled with delicious savory ground pork which is my favorite. The custard buns were just okay. They also had a great lunch deal for Chinese takeout. Let me start off by saying that I love uplifting Asian owned businesses, but I am really disappointed by experience here. The place is a bit dirty, no one greeted me even after I sat down for almost 10 minutes, and at no point did anyone even offer me water. I asked if I could use the bathroom and the answer was no. I was so thirsty and needed to go to the bathroom so bad that I just got my order to go instead. You can imagine that the server wasn't particularly warm or welcoming. Ok, so customer isn't their strong point, but maybe the food is authentic and good right? Nope. The ma po tofu I ordered was really disappointing and not spicy. The soup dumplings tasted like the ones from Trader Joe's, and the custard buns I ordered were definitely not freshly made. The rice wrapped in leaves was also very underwhelming. I am really disappointed because these are the types of dishes I grew up eating/making with my family. While the prices are reasonable, the meal I had wasn't worth $60+. There are better restaurants in the area. Just to end on a positive note though, the food is well-packaged, the crispy beef was good, and the congee was exactly like I imagined it would be. The food looked much better than it tastes, but at least it looks nice. Conclusion: I feel like if the food is mediocre, the service should at least be better. This is a small, tight restaurant that can not accommodate large groups of people. A table here can only fit up to 4 people. The physical environment of the restaurant is not modern, sleek, and clean. The white walls are dirty and tables are coated with grease. We ordered beef chow foon and sesame chicken, each for $10.95, which is a deal in DC. Our entrees were served in 10-15 minutes. The portions were large for 2 people and couldn't be finished. Service was spotty. We had to ask our waitress for water and serving spoons. No refills were offered. We sat at a table near the cashier area for carry out, but those customers had no place to wait and stared at us while we ate. Finally, we looked at the Chinese pastries on the shelves, but they didn't look fresh especially the burnt egg custards for $1.95 each. Prices were 50-75 cents higher when compared to Chinese bakeries in Maryland and Virginia. Overall, we recommend trying another Chinese restaurant in Chinatown if you have concerns with cleanliness and spaciousness. read more
