Been eating here for years, mostly drive through. The last two times I've been I have been very disappointed. The quality of food has dropped. I always order sliced inside pork, have received outside hard to chew bark. I quit buying their ribs as the last two times I bought the were dry and burnt like they had been sitting for a long time. With the price increase they should be better a lot better. When you get the sides the portions are smaller, I know it's a issue with the supplies and cost. Where is one of the top 10 bbq restaurants in the US? I'm not making this up either, you can check out the article on their website. Anyways. My family has always been a fan of this place, and with good reason. First of all...you can smell this restaurant before it is even in sight. And believe me its smell makes your mouth water. We ordered the smoked pork link plate and the bbq brisket sandwich. The sausage was good, but it wasn't my favorite. It was full of flavor though. And the sauce was nice and tangy. The brisket sandwich was full of sliced meat cooked perfectly. The things that stood out the most to me were the sides. We got an order of fried okra and an order of fried green tomatoes. The okra was excellent, although I like my okra a little more crispy. But man oh man, the fried green tomatoes were out of this world. Seriously. I love me some fried green tomatoes, and this place takes the cake. I would not be lying if I said I would go back and order just a bunch of fried green tomatoes and make a meal out of them. They are that good. Ugh, now I want some more. I could do without the chow chow that comes on the food though. I don't even know what it is but I just didn't like it. I'm generally a pretty easy person to please and usually I don't write one star reviews unless it's just that bad, but I'm incredibly displeased with my recent visit to this location. I went through the drive-thru and ordered the pimento cheese sandwich with mac and cheese as a side and a cup of Brunswick Stew. Now, when I order something that says a cup, I expect at least a cup... especially when it's costing me $3.59. I didn't get a cup... I got maybe 3/4 of one. Pictures are attached of the stew in their container and the contents of the container poured into a 1 cup measuring cup. Seriously? I got more mac and cheese than I did stew, and I paid half the cost of the sandwich AND the mac and cheese for the lousy soup! Next time I'll just go to the Colonnade and get Johnny Ray's. They have good food AND good value for the money. Edited to add: I emailed Full Moon about this and got a very prompt response from the manager, so they are definitely attentive and willing to fix any issues. Best all around BBQ in Birmingham. Great meats and delicious sauces...both red and white sauce. However, the two things that are head and shoulders above the competition are their delicious variety of southern sides and their signature chow chow. I order the BBQ without sauce and ask for extra chow chow and mix it in. Delicious! Also, their vinegar based slaw is the best. Smoked wings are a relatively new addition to the menu and I would give them a two thumbs up, especially with the white sauce. read more

Only once did I have a pork sandwich that was bone dry, but otherwise it is very consistent and very flavorful. Good Q in Alabama is an honor since there are so many options to chose from. This is good Q. We hit Full Moon for dinner while in town for a softball tournament and it was absolutely perfect. While we waited for our food, we were able to catch the tail-end of Bama kicking Kentucky's butt on the many large screen TVs in the restaurant. This was my go to place to order on Waitr...until tonight. I placed my order and it was accepted at 7:16 for a GRILLED chicken sandwich, hold the mayo, cole slaw, onion rings and a sweet tea. Pretty simple, right? Wrong!! It took almost 2 hours and the food was wrong and COLD...not lukewarm, straight up cold. The sandwich was fried and fried again and probably fried one more time as the little nuggets (usually the tenders are bigger than the bun) were all shriveled up and disgusting so I guess they decided to slather them in mayo to help them out. Blah! I am not even sure what drink I received...but it definitely wasn't tea. It appears to be a pale yellow but not like mountain dew. The brisket was dry and bland and covered with a sauce that was overwhelming. My bbq chicken was dry cold and like something you would expect in a grocery store. Food is great, but this restaurant can't get out of its own way. A few years ago, they switched from completely disposable plates to these black plastic plates you now have to bus for them. GREAT! Lets pay premium prices for BBQ and do our own dishes. Add to that, the black plastic rarely looks clean, and they are no longer throwaway (my preference when cleaning up my own table). Today I was there, cleaning up their black plastic plates at their newly renovated trash bins (after they almost burned the restaurant down), and the garbage I was throwing in it was coming out the bottom all over my shoes and pants legs. So not only was I cleaning up my own table, I was getting my Sunday clothes dirty while doing so. I was not happy about my Sunday lunch with Full Moon. Additionally, since folks have to bus their own tables, you rarely find a table or booth that is clean. Great food, but really disappointing experience most every time we go there. Pulled up to place my order ... sliced pork plate, collard greens & fried okra ... only to be told they were out of all three of those ... wait, a BBQ restaurant that does not have sliced pork? After i regained my composure, I ordered sliced turkey without chow-chow and the bbq sauce on the side, with fries and slaw When I arrived back home I discovered that I had indeed received sliced turkey but it was slathered with so much sauce & chow-chow that it was inedible... and instead of fries and slaw I had fries and beans ... sadly, there were no napkins or utensils or condiments included with my order... This place needs to fire everyone who works there starting with the manager... or maybe just give up on BBQ altogether and only serve MREs read more

All the food is excellent and on the rare occasion there is a mistake with something in my order, the manager and staff go out of their way to make it right. One took my money $7.43. The other brought the order and quoted $6.69. When I question the differing prices and whether it was actually my order, she argued and said of course it was my order. So heres the joke. This place has signs everywhere that they now have chicken fried steak. The owner obviously does not know the difference in a cow and a chicken. When they brought out the chicken fried "chicken" we sent it back because we ordered steak. The manager comes out and says that the owner thinks that steak is chicken. Although I've enjoyed Full Moon BBQ a few times before (for past Thanksgivings no less), this is the first time I've been able to enjoy it from the actual restaurant, and see all of the offerings available. Let me tell ya - I'm completely sold; the food is phenomenal! Some friends and I ate here this past Saturday and I had a chance to try a classic rib plate with fries and onion rings. SOOO GOOD! The ribs were basted and cooked perfectly, and the BBQ sauce kicked them to a next level. The fries were just your typical fries but delicious, and the onion rings were fantastic!! I'm not sure how they're battered, but the batter is thick and the seasoning is some of the best I've ever tasted on rings (including Cheeburger Cheeburger, which were/are great). As with most BBQ places, sweet tea is the drink to order here as well - it's awesome and bound to more than adequately address any sweet tooth tendencies one might have. And if all that wasn't enough to convince you to try the place, the staff (particularly the management) are incredibly friendly and sincerely appreciative of its customers, and will frequently make you aware of it during your visit. You can't ask for a better win-win... So, will I be trying Full Moon BBQ again? You bet your sweet tea I will be. In fact, if I could find a way I'd probably live above the joint just so I could enjoy the smells of preparation wafting through the cracks. I'm a little shocked at some of the bad reviews. I have eaten at this Full Moon at least 20 times over the years when in town on business...great food and quick service every time. My customers always want to eat at this Full Moon since it's the closest BBQ...also their all local and say it's one of the best BBQ places in town. I must say some of the best BBQ I've ever had..pulled pork, ribs, sausage, and beef all very good. Only complaint is I wish they had several different flavors of BBQ sauces. They only have one red sauce and an Alabama white sauce which I can't stomach. But BBQ is good. read more

This Full Moon location has been going downhill for a while and recently seems to have hit rock bottom. I have been served seriously underdone ribs, sandwiches full of gristle and/or black bark and pork that had been cooked to mush. Even the staff is awful. The cashier asked me three times, "Here or to go?" I answered "Here" each time. After waiting a long time for my order I got up and found it prepared for takeout, sitting on the counter getting cold. I stopped by here with my girlfriend for lunch yesterday. We were looking for a BBQ place in the area and when we looked at Yelp, this happened to pop up. What a good find it was! We were surprised that the restaurant actually had a drive thru window and then the inside looked like your normal fast food place. It was also decorated with a ton of cool sports memorabilia like the helmets of all of the SEC teams, pictures of local college football legends and we even sat in a booth underneath signed jerseys of Bart Starr and Joe Namath. My girlfriend and I decided to split all of our food here as it is easy to do with BBQ and so we ordered a two meat platter with brisket and turkey while choosing mac & cheese and collard greens as our side. Beyond that we also order a large pulled pork sandwich and a side of friend green tomatoes. After ordering in the front at the counter we made our way into the back and sat ourselves at a booth. Within a reasonable amount of time our food was dropped off at our table for us. The first thing that I tried was the fried green tomatoes which were really good. They had a nice crispy breading that was slightly spicy and the tomato itself was a bit sour which paired with it nicely. Then I dug into my pulled pork sandwich. They weren't kidding whenever they called it a large as I think it could easily be a meal in itself. It was also good as the pork was tender and tasted nicely and I loved in when paired with their BBQ sauce. After trying both of those items I finally made it to the meat plate. The turkey was super tender and very delicious while I was a bit disappointed with the brisket. Its not to say that it was bad but after having the super tender turkey I thought that it was a bit tough. I also was not terribly impressed with the mac and cheese. It was creamy but did nothing to wow me. The collard greens were a different story as they were delicious (probably being cooked in some meat drippings?). The bottom line for me is that I would definitely head back here in the future. The BBQ sauce was great here and I enjoyed almost all of the food that I tried. read more

The actual restaurant has a good atmosphere, very clean and more upscale than a standard BBQ place. The food is awesome and they are not stingy on the amount of meat you get with each meal. The salads are huge, most places give you plenty of lettuce and cheese but a small of meat....it is quit the opposite here. If you are not real hungry then do not order the full size salad. The classic ribs plate was wonderful. The ribs sit on top of some delicious BBQ sauce. The steak fries are typically good. The fried okra is not worth getting. I have been to this location a number of times over the years. It had been almost two years since my last visit until today. You get plenty of food. They are not stingy with the meat and the fries are freshly made.I understand the pies are really good and my wife will attest to that. I am not much of a dessert eater. The barbecue does not seem very smoky to me and is overly salted. It is tender. Fries, while fresh, are huge and thus have a lot of soft interior. I prefer fries made in the classic way. But, if you like what is commonly referred to as a steak fry, these are pretty good. Overall, I would say this place is average. I gave it a two star because I have, in fact, had so much better in Birmingham, especially at one place in particular. read more

As many articles written about Alabama BBQ will tell you this is a place available to have BBQ. Yes it's an Alabama staple, yes it has several locations in and around Birmingham, and yes it has certain items on the menu that make it unique. Does it deserve to be on a Top 10 List? Sure it does. It's pretty darn good stuff. I can't say it's above and beyond the best BBQ in Birmingham but at this point with so many BBQ Joints in town it's really all about personal preference. They have great ribs and pork. Their sides are pretty amazing including my personal favorites the vinegar slaw and chow chow. Another cool thing about this place is the availability of different foods other than BBQ. They have wings, chicken tenders, hamburgers, hot dogs, and salads.
