Fumee is a vibe all by itself. When you walk in, the lighting, the music, the various seating styles, the beautiful people....this is where I belonged. We didnt have a reservation so we were able to sit in the bar area. The hostess was kind enough to place our names on a list in case a reservation canceled. Within a few minutes of us being in the bar area, we were told there was a cancelation and was seated on the restaurant side. Things to note: * This restaurant has a tapas/small plates menu. * They have hookah available which adds a nice touch to the atmosphere. * We came on a Sunday night and it was popping. I recommend putting in a reservation in advance to guarantee you a space. * They do have an outdoor patio area to enjoy when the weather is nice. Pros: * The DJ was everything. Probably one of the best DJs I heard in my life. * The atmosphere and environment. * Audrey, our server. She was welcoming, super attentive, and ensured that we had what we needed. Areas of Improvement * The quality of the food. We ordered the ceasar salad with shrimp, the NY strip, Spanish meatballs, and truffle fries. The NY Strip was very chewy, the meatballs had a burnt taste to it and the truffle fries were room temperature. The salad was highlight of the food. The food cost too much to be subpar. This place checked all the boxes- great music, nice modern decor, good tapas and tasty drinks. Only downside is you will likely need a reservation on the weekend AND there is a 2 hour table limit. I really could have spent the rest of my night here. I have had friends come whose experience weren't as great as mine but I'm glad I didn't let that deter me from coming. Firstly, this venue seems best suited for those aged 21 to 30; others might not enjoy it as much. On my first visit, the music was incredibly loud, making it impossible to hear any conversation. Did I mention how loud it was? By the way It appears that despite previous feedback on how uncomfortably loud the DJ is and yes, I said DJ in the restaurant, the restaurant hasn't taken the hint. With that in mind, it's not ideal for quiet dates or chilling out time with friends. While the music itself is great, the volume is excessive, giving the impression of being in a club rather than a restaurant. I'd describe this place as a club that also serves food. They check your ID at the door, what restaurant do you know where you have to show your ID before you enter? Now I know many clubs that you have to do that for. While there's no official dance floor, people still dance around you as you eat, which might not be for everyone. As for the food, the flavors are quite good. I tried the brussels sprouts which was supposed to come with bacon, but they ran out, and their take on a New York strip, which was unfortunately overcooked, but still tasty. The cocktails were a hit with me and my friends. Would I come back? Possibly, if I was in the mood to just hang out without talking, simply enjoying music and food together, then maybe. Otherwise, it's not really my scene. I should also note that each table has a time limit of an hour and 30 minutes before the waiter reminds you to leave. You don't have to go home, but you can't stay there. There a new brunch spot in Charlotte with a whole new VIBE!! Fumée Kitchen & Cocktails has started serving brunch! I highly recommend getting the mimosa flight! You can't go wrong with the drinks. The food was underwhelming for us. The shrimp and grits only have 3 medium size shrimp and for the price a few more should have been added. The chicken was well seasoned but the waffle was crunchy and overcooked. One of the members in our party of eight never received her food. So that was pretty disheartening that she left hungry. The server apologized and said the kitchen was now closed for brunch she would have to wait for a lunch item. This experience wasn't the best to say the least. I've never in my life had such a good experience at a restaurant as I did tonight at Fumee. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcome by the host! The ambiance in Fumee is very nice, it's the perfect setting to enjoy a lovely meal and drinks. We ordered a number of things from the Salmon, Lemon pepper Wings, truffle fries, Brussels sprouts and the Mac and cheese! Everything was DEEEEEELICIOUS. Our server Julie took great care of us and also informed us before the meal started that everything was made to order so something's would be out before others. The plating of the food was very nice! Food was all very rich and decadent in flavor, Everything! Okay, my husband and I truly stumbled upon this place and glad we did. I personally feel as though the restaurant scene is lacking in the university area. I like trying new restaurants and I don't often see new places to go in this area although it's possible I'm just not in the 'know'. When I searched on yelp, Fumee popped up. I'd never heard of it, the reviews looked good and the pics of the food did as well. So we decided to try it out about 3pm on a Saturday. It's in a very unassuming spot so that threw us off. It's in the same shopping plaza as Lidl at the top of the hill. There are two levels of stores and they are on the bottom. Someone is waiting outside to card anyone who enters, again threw us off. We thought we were just grabbing something to eat. There is a dress code. Thankfully we passed. But as we noticed folks coming out and going in, clearly they were aware of the dress code. Think in terms of 'I'm going out to have a really nice time with friends and look cute' versus, I'm going to a business lunch or going to church. The code says business casual but this was a different version of what I typically consider business casual. We got in but I would definitely take it up a notch when I come back. As soon as we walked in we weren't sure if we could seat ourselves or not. There was a dj and the music was very loud, I found myself dancing in place. There wasn't a sign that said please wait to be seated. Shortly, the hostess appeared who asked if we had reservations. But she was still able to seat us. It was almost full with the exception of about 3 empty tables. Not a huge space but a variety of different seating ie., table for 2, table for 4, long tables for groups. There's a bar area with seating. The menu is limited as mentioned in other reviews. Brunch was until 5 and we could only order off of the brunch menu so that was a bit of a bummer because I wasn't necessarily in the mood for breakfast food. They were out of biscuits and gravy but I was able to order a biscuit (not on the menu) with my brunch bowl. The brunch bowl had eggs, potatoes and grits (I requested no meat), added the big fluffy biscuit and it was delicious. My husband had the monte cristo but he didn't care for it because the croissant that was described wasn't prepared like a typical croissant. He ordered potatoes as a side. I tasted the monte cristo and it was pretty good. I had a blueberry lemon drop that was delicious. Our meal was $79. Be prepared for the prices. 18% gratuity is also included in the check but that is very plainly written on the menu so no surprises and I like that. The service was great and I think the included gratuity helps with the good service because staff are taken care of. Just my opinion. I'm big on good customer service. I think Kristen was our server and she was great. I saw staff 'sing' happy birthday to someone and can I just say, I am coming back for my birthday next month. How fun! Again, as others have stated, definitely a younger crowd. A fun place I think to have some drinks with friends before moving on to another spot for me. Back in the day tho, I would be a regular at a place like this. Great addition to the university area, there's definitely nothing like it. This is a must try if nothing else, for the experience. Despite negative things I have heard, my husband and I decided to try this establishment. Customer service was obsolete. We were told no seating was available inside so we opted for patio seating. Needless to say, no one came to take our order after being there 10-15 minutes and the busser asking if we were ready. We waited another 5-7 minutes and no one showed before we proceeded to leave. I advised the hostess on the way out, no one came to take our order...blank stares instead of an apology & an attempt to make it right. Customer service is priceless. This was my first time here, we ordered wings, brussels, and fries. Everything tasted great but sadly was overcooked. The brussels were mushy, the French fries fried harder than i personally prefer, and the chicken was over fried but the spicy garlic parm sauce was really good. We got the two cognac cocktails and both were great. We also ordered a hookah which came out in less than 5 minutes which was so impressive to me. That being said, if they could get the food right and run some drink specials, I would probably have rated 5 stars. I loved the food so much, that I invited my cousin & her friends for her bday dinner this past weekend. When we all arrived, the attitudinal head hostess tried to cram us into a 4-person table with 3 floor stools squeezed in between the regular chairs. We thought it was a joke. When we asked for something with 7 seats, she nastily refused and said that's all they have and to "accept it or not." We saw 2 other empty booths, but she refused to give us those. After 3 minutes of going back & forth, we had to call her manager over due her nasty unprofessional energy. He immediately instructed her to seat us in the larger booth. *Service - The service was lack luster and the 20% automatic gratuity forced with a "1 check only" rule felt unethical. Forcing one check is just plain lazy and unnecessary in 2023. (so is forcing an automatic 20% gratuity) The service was mid at best and our party spent over $700+. If you can't pay your workers a livable wage, just close down. The server also had a timer displayed on the hand computer, and basically said we have to get up in 20 minutes. Apparently there is a 90 minute time frame. Wow. *Drinks- My drinks were overpriced and forgettable. I asked for a Manhattan and they didn't have the ingredients for one. I then asked for an old-fashioned. They didn't have the ingredients needed but said they could make it work. It came out in a basic glass from Marshall's and tasted like nothing but sugar. For $20, I expect better. The ladies did have other colorful drinks that they did enjoy. (lemon drops I believe) * Food Poisoning- Although everyone thoroughly enjoyed our food, 2 members of our party got food poisoning from the Pork Loin. They are both pretty sick right now. Her bday experience has been officially ruined. I must say, I take my recommendations very seriously when I have friends in town. I spoke so highly of this place and invited them out for a high quality experience. It turned out to be just awful, and I'm honestly just EMBARRASSED that we had such an awful experience. I hope you all can get it together because for the prices you are demanding, the service and experience are incongruent. We got scammed this time and its quite disappointing. Our server was extremely unattentive, and we had to keep reminding her of what we ordered. It took forever to receive both our drinks and food. The Old Bay Honey Wings were downright awful I am not sure if they were properly cooked as they were about to close. While the music, especially the Afrobeats on Thursday nights, is a highlight, the food menu is neither inclusive nor tasty. Definitely not a place I'd recommend for the food. Maybe go to this place for hookah and drinks ONLY. My lemon drop was great. It took our server forever to bring us shots of tequila. Nonetheless, the place is cute. read more

The cauliflower itself had great flavor but the sauce wasn't a hit for me. Nothing special about the salad and the truffle fries needed more truffle flavor. One thing to note, there is a time limit. After 90 minutes we were informed (by multiple people) that we would have to close our tab. We would need to leave from our table, but were welcome at the bar. Good Afternoon, My name is Nia Williams and I wanted to share my recent experience at your restaurant on Saturday night. Previously, I made a reservation with you for my friends 25th birthday. When I reached out to schedule the reservation, I explained that I would be decorating the table and bringing in a cake. The person that I spoke with never indicated that I could not bring outside food in. So, when I arrived on Saturday and I had a cake, I was perplexed when the security guard told me I wasn't allowed inside with her cake. If that is your policy then I have no problem adhering to it; however, that should have been communicated to me when I made the reservation. Additionally, our reservation was for 8:15pm. We did not get seated until almost 9:30pm because the hostess assumed my party had already been checked in and gave my table away. Reservations are necessary to ensure you are accommodated at arrival but unfortunately, being seated almost an hour later, felt as though the time I took to plan this birthday celebration was in vain. Our experience after we were seated was adequate but our fries were cold, and after requesting fresh fries, we still weren't satisfied. The drinks took an extremely long time to arrive and throughout this entire experience, never once did a manager come out and apologize or try to make the situation more pleasant. I have called three times since Saturday and to date no one has contacted me. This is not the type of establishment I want to dine at nor will I ever recommend your restaurant.
