The worst service is ignoring your customers at the door. I walked in and waited 5 minutes and still was not recognized. I asked to be served and I was told that they were not taking anymore orders. When the area's other restaurants had a long wait, we were grateful that Fumi's had a table available for us. Our server was VERY nice as well. We were happy that outside tables were an option since the inside had a funny smell and funky vibe. As for the food, it was hit or miss. Like the other reviewers noted, the food is overpriced for what you get. I did enjoy the beef teri sandwich I ordered, but I didn't appreciate that I was charged $2 more for it than was listed on the menu. Waited for 30 minutes to be seated and all we got was sorry we'll have to clean a table before you can eat. And while there were clearly many tables that were clean already we waited for another 10 minutes and all of the staff just sat and cleaned cups and talked. We wanted to try Hawaiian Japanese food while in Kona and came here for the yakisoba, which was good. The tempura plate was good as well. The service was nice and we sat outside until it started to rain. Overall the experience was A-OK. They had seating available, but the staff was too busy to clean the tables and seat people. Tried this place because of positive ratings on yelp. First observation: service was SLOW. The oysters were great, but would have been better with typical horseradish garnish. I couldn't figure out why the Tabasco on our table looked nasty so I just grabbed one from another table. (See pic). The tempura shrimp was too heavily breaded. The pork sukiyaki was pretty good. The saimin was good but we had already finished everything else a good 10 minutes before it was brought to the table. Definitely room for improvement. Solid three stars. Since not many restaurants open during July 4th so we came to this one for dinner. It's pricy and I don't feel the food is very fresh. It's super greasy and strong sauce, I feel it's to cover the unfreshness. The server is enthusiastic but just always cannot see me asking for things. read more

This isn't my normal type of food. I'm a hipster California person who only eats farm fresh organic and wilds but my daughter made a reservation and I went all out native. I had the pork chop and shrimp. So good. Haven't had a pork chop in 17yrs. She had the chicken. Can't remember the name. Just ask Amy what to get. We took home our leftovers. Before we left a put some soy and Tabasco in our rice. The next morning I fried the rice, threw in 2 eggs and warmed up our leftovers. This place isn't overpriced as some ppl say if you make an extra meal out of the leftovers. That was also bomb. Thanks guys! All the patrons were locals and super friendly. This restaurant is a must go to. It'll soothe ur soul inside and out. The food is made with the utmost care and love. Aside from the food, Customer service is as personable as u can get. The Ambiance is set with the interior decor and the customer to Chef experience. Being in the Foodservice industry myself and a critic of everything to do with the customer experience. Disappointment....after reading an article from West Hawaii Today, I wanted to try out how a grandson of the original Teshima's would improve from grandma's original awesomeness. Three of us paid over $60 dollars for lunch and what we got was spoiled chicken in sukiyaki. The smell once you open up the hot pot top almost made me throw up. Over use of soy sauce drenched over clear noodles to mask the bad chicken smell and flavor. Grilled Ahi was not fresh, over cooked and over salted to mask the old fish taste and some kind of funky odor of cleaning supplies from shrimp tempura....overall food is not fresh and bad cooking. One of us got sick from eating here... I loved the tempura french fries. We left most of food untouched except for the fries. read more

Bottom Line: The best saimin in Kona at a reasonable cost. 5th stop on my ono grinds tour takes me back to Kona in search of a bowl of saimin. Saimin is another great Hawaiian comfort food dating back to the plantation era. I just love saimin but unfortunately the 2 saimin joints in Kona went out of business. Teshima's is iconic in the Kona area and wanted to try the saimin at Fumi's Kitchen because of the yelp reviews and because it is owned by the Teshima family. It is a medium sized cafe with modern decor and very clean. Very touching to have the picture of Fumi Teshima hanging over the bar. We ate lunch there on a Sunday and no problem getting seated as there was only 1 other party in the restaurant. The waitress was friendly and attentive and our food came within 10-15 minutes. The saimin overall was very good but had room for improvement. The broth and noodles were absolutely amazing. A solid 5/5. The broth was so flavorful, probably dashi based but complex. The toppings were good but not great, 3/5. Kamaboko, spam, pork belly and some greens. There was 1 other topping which I couldn't identify because it was julienned so fine. I am not a fan of pork belly, yeah I know most people LOVE them but I just can't get over the fat content and texture. Too many years in California. ha ha The amount of toppings also seemed a little light for the size of the bowl and cut too finely. I asked the waitress if there was an option to swap out the pork belly for something else and she said no, just more spam or kamaboko. I would consider changing the saimin to a customer selection format like ramen shops do instead of a one size fits all saimin. It might open up opportunities for vegan and gluten free customers also. The broth and noodles are so ono. Just my 2 cents. All that said, best saimin on the Kona and Kohala coast. I'll definitely be back no matter what the toppings are. For a bowl of saimin, highly recommended. Tip: It's located in the Alii Sunset Plaza and the main entrance is from the Kuakini Highway, not Alii Drive which is more of an alley and easy to miss. A,little gem tucked away in the coconut grove shopping center. Inside are pictures of multiple generations of family. The food is Hawaiian/Japanese and very authentic. They offer Miso and Kim chee with fish and rice options. The tea is excellent. Very un crowded and a great change from the usual tourist places on Alli drive. read more

Nice clean restaurant. The booths and high tables are nice. I'm not a fan of the cafeteria style table and chairs. We were greeted at the door and was able to choose where we wanted to sit. The server was informative and friendly. We ordered a large Saimin, Udon, Teri Beef sticks, and tempura shrimp and veggies. The food came out quick. Steaming hot and fresh. The Saimin's broth was flavorful and savory. Noodles were cooked perfect. And it was loaded with Roasted Pork, Sweet Egg, Spam, Kamaboko, Char Sui, and Mustard Cabbage. The Udon was just as delicious. The Teri Beef sticks were on point. The meat was sweet, salty, tender goodness. My favorite was the Shrimp and Veggie Tempura. The batter was light and crispy. Shrimp and veggies were perfectly cooked. Being on Ali'i drive, I expected the prices to be higher. Food is reasonably priced considering the location. We decided to come here for dinner because the food looks delicious in all of the yelp photos. When we arrived, they handed us a menu that doesn't seem to have the stuff we are interested in like the loco moco or the omelette fried rice. We actually just asked the waitress for the omelette fried rice and she happily took our order! We got the charred miso eggplant, omelette fried rice, and butter fish. Everything was so delicious. I'm usually not a fan of eggplant but I loved the eggplant here. I think everything was cooked to the perfection and seasoned very very well. I would come back for lunch and breakfast too! read more

We specifically went for the Saimin Noodles. I got the medium bowl and it was huge. The flavor and spam was fantastic. The large bowl was jinormous. He server was really sweet and nice. Side note: The dude's restroom is outside. It's clean but hot. We had a baby and needed to use a changing table. There was not one in either restroom. We ended up going to Fumi's after not being able to get into a neighboring restaurant. We had 6 in our party, two of which were little ones. PROS No waiting to be seated (although she gestured where to go instead of walking us to our table, we walked over to the multiple tables looking back to ask...this one?, getting a nod of the head) Looking back this should have been the first warning to leave and go somewhere else. Lots of parking Convenient location Good food (not for the price) CONS No one offered child seating. We had to locate and drag them over ourselves. The first two plates (for the children) were served after 45 minutes of waiting at the table...no drinks, no checking on us etc. We had to ask for the silverware so the children could eat their food Next two plates came out another 10 minutes after that. The kids were already done eating Meanwhile folks would walk in, who clearly knew the staff and was greeted with hugs and much quicker service. 12 Minutes after that the last two plates came out and we ate while everyone else sat there waiting for us Despite having a full bar, they couldn't make most of the drinks we asked for and giggled while the waitress went back and forth to ask. With today's technology, one could easily look up a recipe and wing it. After our very awkward meal, we sat there for another 15 minutes waiting for the check, as did the other 3 surrounding couples. This incredibly slow service left us scratching our heads because the place was next to empty. The waitresses don't check on each other's tables and they felt compelled to fold napkins and prep than to check on their own tables. I had to walk up to the bar to ask for a take out container...again because the waitress "forgot" I hate writing reviews like this but it's important that customers be informed when deciding to spend their hard earned money for a good meal. This is one of those places you wish you had found when you first arrived on the island. We managed to get her on the last night. The two women running the place are excellent. They will make you feel at home and even gave us chocolates :-) The food is absolutely authentic. Best bowl of saimin I've ever had. It was loaded with really good pieces of grilled SPAM.
