Got there around 7pm. 1 person up front running the restaurant. Quick to get the drinks but the food took around 20 minutes to arrive with only the restaurant barely filled. No one at the bar. I ordered the Rib Eye Steak and a side appetizer (Shrimp Tempura w/ Vegetables). The WHOLE meal came at the same time. The Steak was overcooked (Ordered it medium rare) and the rice cold. Only thing decent was the Shrimp Tempura. I sat and waited 20 more minutes for the check after finishing the meal. I will never go there again for NO meals. read more

Great place and amazing staffs! I had the spicy beef stew and my wife had her New York steaks! At first we had our mussels and onion rings as our appetizers! Came out really quick and hot! Was Amazing! Our waitress Antonee, was amazing every 20 seconds she'll be checking if everything was okay! If she can't read this please let her know she's awesome! Have eaten here several times, mostly good quality but tonight was not. The prices were raised on dinners earlier this year which is why I'm disappointed tonight. The chicken was poorly prepared and chopped pieces smaller, scraps of fatty skin. The meat was cold and rice was cold. Place was not busy at all but cook did not present good work. Waitress are very, very good and friendly. Worst cooked meal I've had here, expected better especially with these higher prices. read more

I really enjoyed dinner at Fumi's. We stopped by on Tuesday night at 7pm and the place had a few tables but mostly empty. Seemed like a lot of local nice people in there, which I throughly prefer to the busy restaurants further down the Main Street. My husband and I both got dinner trays. I had the chicken yakatori and tempura and he had the teriyaki beef and tempura. The chicken was OH MY GOD slap me delicious. I wished I ordered a giant plate of that! It was boneless with skin so it had that great crispiness. The tempura was okay, I was disappointed it didn't come with sweet potato tempura. The other issue was some pieces were a bit over breaded. That said, the miso soup, complimentary edamame, and other tiny sides were totally delicious! We may need to visit again before we leave because I need that chicken in my life. read more

Fumi's was one of the Japanese restaurants that was recommended to us when we first got to Kona. The staff was cool but the wait was horrible. After reading the Yelp reviews I was worried that we might wait forever another hour at the rate it was going. I've even noticed the other customers looking around wondering when their food was going to arrive. The food was very disappointing. The shrimp tempura was overly battered and the my stew was too sweet. I don't understand why there weren't serving any Gyoza? My boyfriend is half Japanese and he was so dissatisfied, he got out of there as soon as he can. He even took the bill and went to the bar to pay for it instead of waiting. Not a restaurant we would encourage my friends to visit and will never return when I come to the big island again. read more

This place just ok. It was empty when we walked in, that should have been a signal to us. The beef teriyaki was pretty bad. It was sweet and dry, almost the consistency of beef jerky. The Yakisoba noodles had way too much sauce/gravy. The steak was good. The mix veggies that came with the steak and couple other dishes were either frozen or canned veggies (corn, peas and carrots). It made a terrible presentation for a $31 steak. The Korean beef stew was not Korean, it was American beef stew with hot sauce. I will not eat here again. read more

The waitress came and said one item is not available, had to change to an other item. Which is fine. Waited for another 25 minutes. Nothing served. The table next to us, which ordered the same item is served 15 minutes ago. So we kept waiting additional 10. Finally asked the owner where is the food. She checked with the kitchen, said our food didn't start cooking yet, and showed me the ticket the waitress wrote (the one she fixed items 20 minutes after we order). What the owner tried to say is the waiting time was only 30 minutes with no facial expression. Thank you. We will be sure not eat here. read more

The restaurant experience and the food was bomb! Auntie treated us very well. Our friends who are locals of Kona took us here. The portions were big and the food was delicious. I ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura with a side of raw fish. I believe the fish was ahi tuna. Visited Fumi's for a family dinner and was very impressed with the service. We had a party of 10 and made sure to call in advance for reservations. We arrived just as they opened for dinner service and was greeted promptly. Here is the breakdown grades from our visit: PARKING: A- We arrived early so the dinner crowd had not arrived as of yet. I can see how the parking can get scarce but there is a lot of parking within walking distance. Remember, there is a 2 hour parking limit per shopping center. Service: A+ Greeted promptly and served ice water. Shortly after, they started a drink order and appetizers. A big screen plays some excellent Hawaiian/Local music videos. Appetizers: A+ We ordered the Tempura Fries, Tempura Onion Rings, and Charred Miso Eggplant. All excellent choices. My favorite-Tempura Fries with tempura sauce. Yum! Meal: A+ A wide selection of Japanese/American themed meals. I had the Pork Chop/ Shrimp Tempura combination. Very delicious. Meal came with Miso soup which hit the spot. Another dish that was tried in our party, was the Panko Fried Ahi, which I am surely going to try next. Looked just as delicious! Meal Service: A+ The server constantly made sure our water and drinks were refreshed, which always commands a 20% tip from me, anywhere I go. The timing of pupu's and meals arrival were perfect. Conclusion: An excellent choice for you to visit. It is evident in the "style" of the meals and dining that there is a relationship to the Teshima Restaurant family, but the dishes are different enough where you will not feel like it is another Teshima's. read more

I hope if you are reading this review...you are walking as quickly as you possibly can to get to this local gem. The service is beyond fantastic. They were so kind and accommodating with our request for an outside table. Kat, our wonderful server, made great recommendations and had a fun personality which I always appreciate! The clam appetizer was by far my favorite dish...the flavor on the broth was so multi-layered...I could have had 3 helpings and still gone for more. The veggie tempura was perfectly crispy and light...the beef teriyaki was excellently prepared...and the eggplant app was one of the best, if not THE best, eggplant preparation I have ever eaten. It's a cozy spot with amazing food and fantastic service so do yourself a favor...walk through all of the touristy spots on the front of the main street and find your way back to the best food I've eaten in 6 days on the island!! read more

Glad we waded back further off the street to find this place. We were actually looking to eat at a sushi place closer to the street but it seemed like service was slow, or at least seating people seemed to be taking awhile. My uncle was pleased to hear it is part of the family that owns Teshima's. Didnt make it there this trip, but really enjoyed the food here. We sampled lots of menu items and everyone was very pleased with the food ( girls didn't want their Spam, so I got lucky with extra servings!) Whatever you do, add an order of the tempura fries! We devoured two orders of them. Everyplace should have these on the menu! No alcohol here. We probably didn't need any more after the trough of Mai tais we just finished up drinking. Get off the sidewalk and come try this family run and super friendly place. read more

Awesome breakfast! My friend Brian and I, make it a point to travel from Kamuela to Kailua Kona a few weekends a month to enjoy the absolutely fabulous breakfast served at Fumi's! In addition to the fabulous food, the service is also outstanding, especially from Maria! She is very organized and always handles the large crowds of people that come in after us. Super nice family owned restaurant. Me and the wife were trying to find a decent restaurant to eat at, but big island at night during the week is kind of barren.... ended up picking here. We ordered the saimin and the sukiyaki. I don't know... I just didn't find the saimin or the sukiyaki particularly standout. The pickles were nice though. Service was great. The food just wasn't stand out enough. Sadly, it reminded me of the japanese hawaiian place in my mall food court :( For a $16 sukiyaki and a $11 saimin I guess I just expected something a little more memorable. read more

We just had dinner at Fumi's! It was excellent. The shrimp tempura melted in my mouth and the sashimi was so fresh and delicious! Plus the appetizer of grilled eggplant was incredible, wonderful flavor...another melt in my mouth treat! The service we had was prompt, friendly and full of aloha spirit! The owner, Ron, really takes pride in his food and it shows! We will definitely be back! Ok, we went to Fumi's again a couple days later.... Wow, the saimin was delicious! It was outstanding. I read another review that said it was really good. They were right! The broth is wonderful, so flavorful and the noodles cooked just right! One year later. Fumi's seems to be hitting its stride. I had the hamburger steak last week and the pork chops this week. The restaurant is clean with maybe a dozen tables that can seat four. Family style and casual. You don't need to dress for this place. To me it's worth coming here if you don't want to drive out to the original teshima restaurant out in the hill. The hamburger steak is just as good as the the original teshimas. Wonderful rich gravy, ask for it with grilled onions, great meaty texture. Served Japanese style with rice and pickles and also some mixed veggies and miso soup. read more

First time here. We came to meet friends and food is really good. I also like the family- friendly atmosphere.

Wow! If you're in town and don't want to make the trek up the hill to Teshima's stop in at Fumi's Kitchen. Smaller menu, but the quality of the food is on par with the restaurant up the hill. The restaurant isn't too big but feels cozy rather than crowded. There is indoor or outdoor seating, but seeing as it's right off the usually blazing hot Alii drive indoor seating would probably be preferable. Fumi's offers a tasty selection of some Japanese and local comfort food. Most dishes are served with sides - rice, miso, nabemono and tsukemono for the combos, rice, nabemono/tsukemono for plates. Everything tastes wonderful. The only reason I knocked off a star was the wait for our food was a tad (just a tad) long, but if you don't mind waiting the food will be totally worth it. read more

Absolutely terrific food and very friendly and attentive service. This restaurant is BYOB so bring your own wine or beer and they will happily let you enjoy it with no corkage. They misheard my order so they gave me the beef teriyaki to enjoy for free while I waited for my pork sukiyaki (it would have gone to waste but most places can't understand that). The beef teriyaki was the best I've ever had, tender and delicious. The pork sukiyaki was delicious and full of flavor and loaded with meat. Shrimp Tempura was outstanding with great breading and huge tender shrimp. Others in our party of six enjoyed delicious chicken yakitori which was fresh made and delicious. I highly recommend Fumi for a delicious meal in Kailua. Grandma Teshima is surely proud of the great hospitality and food being offered here. read more
