"Best ZL steamed rice rolls in Burnaby!" ...... could be my tag line for Fung May @Crystal Mall #炸兩 = Zhà liǎng = my own personal acronym of ZL ZL (炸兩), as shown in photos, is a specialty steamed rice roll, often served at Hong Kong dim sum places. The crispy texture of the rice roll (腸粉) comes from the deep fried Chinese donuts (油條) wrapped inside. Their ZL rice rolls (炸兩) are consistently yummy and I am impressed at how they make it better than some fancy dim sum restaurants in town. Also, not all dim sum restaurants serve this dish because 炸兩 ZL rice rolls is time consuming to prepare and only delicious when freshly made. As they are located in Crystal Mall's food court, this specialty rice roll is easily one of my top reasons why I visit Crystal Mall ......my foodie love is simple where I visit Fung May mainly because it satisfies my ZL rice rolls cravings. Steamed rice rolls pairs perfectly with congee and they serve a variety of congee flavors which makes a yummy breakfast or lunch combo. Note to visitors: Fung May competes well with other food vendors in this Asian mall for its wide variety of authentic Chinese food choices at good value. Obviously, ambiance is not a key factor for food court meals nor have I tried all their popular dishes to comment fairly but I find their overall service to be fast and decent. And given its reputation as one of the longest food stall in business at Crystal Mall Food Court, it must do pretty well in catering to local customers' varied food tastes to earn their numerous repeat visits. So I've recommend guests staying at Burnaby's Hilton next door to check out its diverse menu when craving Chinese foods as a convenient takeout meal option. read more

One of the longer lasting places in the Crystal Mall food court. The sign says Taiwanese style, but they seem to serve quite a bit of HK food here too. Parking is available underneath the mall in the circular lot. This place probably has more variety than any other place in the food court. They have rice, noodles, congee, and more. I had their hot pot style wonton noodles. Tasted pretty good. Up there with local sit down style restaurants. Dish came with 5 wontons and 2 shrimp, and some vegetables and Chinese mushroom. Decent sized portion compared to the competition. Wouldn't say I left full, but I didn't leave hungry like some of the other places. In other words, some of the best value in the food court. Wouldn't mind coming back and trying their other 99 or so dishes. read more

The food is average. Typical food court stuff, especially when compared to Asia. There is comfort in that though, you know what you are getting. There is English translation for most of the dishes but there are also "special" dishes and combos which you will only know if you can read chinese. I really find that annoying as that means I couldn't order from that menu. I usually come here to get congee as it is not bad and near the office. Plus it is reasonably priced at $5 onwards. Great for cold days or when I am a bit under the weather. Just don't expect it to be filled with ingredients though. I had the wonton noodle soup before and that was really mediocre. This place is ok. I've been here a few times now and it really depends on what you order. The first time I ordered the beef brisket and veg on rice, it's pretty good, the brisket was done nicely, very tender and the sauce was quite flavorful, the only downside was they were pretty chintzy on the beef. I've also ordered the house special chow mein, that was probably the best thing I ordered from here, good size portion and lots of ingredients (prawns, chicken, squid etc). The dish I disliked the most was the salted fish and chicken fried rice....there was barely any salted fish in there, I honestly couldn't taste any, it was all chicken, I will never order that again. Anytime I'm near Crystal mall, I have to come in to the food court for stone bowl rice! Parking sucks but it's expected at this mall. If you can come by skytrain or walk in, do it. Lots of selection of toppings. I got sliced fish and Chinese sausage. Yum! Just comforting. You wait 15-20 min and they'll charge you a $5 deposit for the stone bowl which is refundable upon return. The delicate white fish slices coupled with the salty sausage is my go to. Crispy rice skins are delicious. There's a lot of other options in the food court but I always come straight here. I don't know of any other place that does stone pot in the Vancouver area so I have to get my fix here (does anyone know any other place?) read more

I have been going to this little restaurant inside the Crystal Mall for years. I'm not sure what took me this long to review it...Anyway, this place is definitely a must try if you want something quick to eat. I have to say that sometimes the wonton soup is a hit or miss. However, yesterday I tried 2 other dishes from them. I got the Sliced beef and egg swirl chow fun; chicken chow mein. They were both ultra delicious . The portions were huge too! The best thing is that they make them right after you order so its fresh fresh fresh. Non of the dishes are sitting around for someone to order them. Above all, their prices are unbeatable!!! I know it has been rough for the restaurants inside the crystal mall so I decided to show a small support. The owners are nice people and they work hard. As another reviewer said ,j2 is a claypot rice item. I have seen YouTube videos about it and how it's quite a Hong Kong staple, and been thinking about trying it at a Richmond located restaurant. I discovered this by accident. I thought I was buying a takeout dish that was steamed spare ribs with Chinese sausage.I don't read Chinese so don't know if it is stated . I was delighted to find out at home when I tried it. Now my trip to Richmond is going to be delayed. Delicious...I am going back for more,since I go to Metro town 3-4 days a week. I easily can walk from Superstore to Crystal Mall in 5 minutes. Going to go on a weekday as there is inadequate seating for patrons at their food court on weekends. You literally have to go with someone..spot someone leaving,grab the seat and table..then go separately to order your food.Good luck trying to come back to the seating area with food and find an empty table. There's not much room for expansion in the ageing mall with all the high rises coming up in the last 15 years or so. So don't say I didn't tell you. I've always shied away from eating from this mall since my cousin got food poisoning from a stall at this mall. That said, I know it's always packed so I decided to give it a go anyways, so I decided to try Fung May. I ordered Pork and Preserved Egg Congee (5.50) and a Meatball Congee (5.50). Both were pretty watery unfortunately and didn't have much of any taste....at least that means no MSG right? lol. The donut was super crispy thankfully but was so airy, it felt like there was no substance to it. Been to this place numerous times. My go to place when I'm in the area. Sliced fish congee: There is no fishy smells like most other places do. Thumbs Up! Salted pork and century egg congee: The best best best! the best that I have tasted in Vancouver. XO shrimp fried rice: Very tasty with a bit of the smoky smells that you could hardly find anywhere else. Shrimps are of bigger size compare to other restaurants as well. Very generous amount. Bbq Pork fried rice: Decent. Chinese sausage and egg fried rice: Decent. Salted Fish and chicken fried rice: Don't expect for the one with strong salted fish smell, for a stronger salted fish smell, you may want to go to Kingspark, the stall across. Fung May salted fish fried rice is more of something that you would crave during the cold weather. It has a hint of salted fish and ginger smell. Ginger was not too overwhelming compare to fancier restaurant, so love it! Chinese Donut: OMG it smells so....... good and if you have it to go, just warm it up in griller at 300 degree for 5 - 7 mins, have it with the congee. Heaven.......The crisp on the outside, soft inside and the smell... its just perfection. The only thing you need to get from other place is just a cup of hot tea to make a complete meal. Wonton noodle in soup: Not very good. I certainly will visit this place again and again. And..... in person. They are available on a few delivery platform but I will never order from any delivery platform for this place just because I wanted to support them, making sure they get to maximize their profit. For a small stall in the Crystal Mall food court, they have a ginormous menu! They serve Cantonese comfort food - congee, noodle soups, mixed noodles (lo mein), fried noodles, steamed rice dishes, hot pot rice dishes, fried rice, and rice plates. I get them every time I come to the Crystal Mall food court. They're really nothing fancy and are quite plain by themselves, though I do love their silky, chewy texture. Came to Fung May for lunch takeout around 11:30 M. I ordered the taiwanese beef noodles for $7.50. I probably waited for about 10 minutes for it. When I opened it back at the office, I was surprised at how much noodles they gave me. I wasn't expecting much because for the price I paid for. I really liked the noodles because they were just the right consistency, not too hard and not too soft. There were ample amount of beef: big and tender. They would probably break apart if you apply just a little bit more pressure while holding them with your chopsticks. The soup was not too salty at all, I ended up drink about half of it. I didn't get thirsty after either, so there probably wasn't a lot of MSG in it, maybe? The noodles also had shredded cabbage, which I didn't expect. There were preserved vegetables but these shredded cabbage were crunchy and thus added another texture to the noodles. I did wish I had more preserves vegetables though. The cashier had a great attitude and was really nice. She was smiling the whole time which doesn't happen often coming from someone working at a food court. Overall, I give this food court stall 3.5 stars. I really enjoy the rice hot pot and congee selection here. However, the stall can get busy at times and the cashier does not write down the orders. We ordered a side of salted duck egg ($1.50) to go with the rice and the staff forgot it. When we returned to the stall to ask, they insisted we did not pay and there was no paper trail. My mom paid another $1.50 just to not argue and it turned that egg into one expensive twice paid duck egg. It was 5 orders and staff could not keep track with any order changes. I took off half a star for that. It is safer to order an item without any changes so that staff do not get confused. This stall takes cash only as well. There is a $5 deposit for the clay pots. You get the deposit back once the clay pot is returned (I guess people apparently were taking the pots home?!). read more

Tried various things from this place. The congee is "meh" in quality - watery, not flavorful. It does comes with a descent amount of ingredients. The spareribs with black-bean sauce steamed rice is good, big portions, cheap price. The ribs are quite flavorful. Overall I give it an "ok". read more

My go-to for fried rice take out. Don't expect anything fancy or awesome service (it IS Crystal Mall after all), just pay for your food and go home. Okay, I have a love\hate relationship with this place. We'll start with the bad, I ordered the chow mein and it tasted bitter! Noodles and meat had no flavour and I don't know why the noodles were bitter. Second time I ordered the seafood thick rice noodles and found little bits of hair and dust. (Really gross!! :S don't think they're keen on cleanliness..usually a deal breaker for me.) Also that one time when they charged me for a juice box but forgot to give it to me.. But I find myself coming back for the churn fun\rice rolls with XO spicy sauce. Its cheap, filling, delicious, and I just love churn fun. You can add meat to them like fish, scallops, ribs etc. Their congee is not bad either. There is no msg so you're not dying of thirst later. I ordered black bean pork ribs rice hot pot. I was a little disappointed that the chunks of pork ribs had more bones than meat. There was a lot of rice and it was lightly flavoured soy sauce. All in all, it wasn't too bad, but nothing really great. My mom's cooking is still better. read more

Just order the J2. DO IT! You won't regret it. The J2 is the spareribs & chinese sausage on rice. It's cooked in a claypot so the rice gets crusty and fragrant at the bottom. The pot itself is huge, with loads of rice, topped with a substantial amount of sausage, spareribs and cabbage. Imo, one of the best deals in the food court! Very comparable to a restaurant. It is a conventional place to get your quick chinese food from the likes of wonton noodle soup to the congees. For $7 getting wonton noodle soup was a decent deal. The noodles was just basically noodles bought from a store and the wontons (I hope it is handmade), but I am thinking it is store bought for some reason from some store in Crystal Mall. Been a customer for over 10 years. Food quality is good for a food court stand. Some items are much better than others. Fried rice and chow meins are good. Friendly owners and once they know you are a repeat customer they are very open to customizing your order to your liking. Big portions and prices are still quite low compared to everything else that is out there. Called them up asking if I could still get congee before they close at 7pm. The said yes. But when I got there at 6:35pm, they said that they were all sold out and they also said that sometimes they sellout at 4pm. I was so angry because over the phone they said that I could still get it before 7. Thanks to Yelp, I found another place Congee King on Kingsway, which I highly recommend. Recently, ordered the beef brisket mixed noodle. The noodle stink of lye solution. The beef brisket came in 8 tiny pieces, just slightly bigger than rat droppings, just as well, as brisket were very salty and had no other taste. It's annoying that stingy owners think customers don't realized they use one regular size brisket and cut into 8 pieces and serve it as a full order. read more
