Funhouse is a one-of-a-kind, mandatory stop for anyone who visits L.A. on so many levels. The casual-but-expertly-made and lovingly served izakaya-style dishes range from top-shelf sashimi made from the freshest fish available to spicy vegan curry, with delicious appetizers everyone can agree on, such as crispy mountain fries, vegan miso eel (actually eggplant), and spicy edamame. Every time friends or family come to town, I always take them to Funhouse and they are blown away by the excellent food and service. But we also go because it's a shrine to the L.A. punk scene located near the old Hong Kong Cafe and Vex, where bands like the Germs, Bags, Go-Go's, X, and Black Flag would play, and even closer to the Atomic Cafe, where all the bands would hang out after shows! Old posters, photos, and other artifacts from back in the day to now (not just from L.A. but also NYC, the UK, and more, much of it given and signed by the bands) adorn every wall, and the stereo only plays the coolest music. Most of the staff are in punk bands I love and I always run into other musicians, photographers, filmmakers, zine makers, and artists hanging out and eating--old-school L.A. punks and touring bands from across the country, Europe, and Japan, alike! A punk rock themed izakaya! The waiter will come up to you with food options on a whiteboard menu, that will vary based on what is available that day. I went as a group of 3 and we decided to share appetizers and sashimi to get a taste of everything, and then we each ordered our own entree. The food was so carefully prepared and fresh that it was reminiscent of the way food is presented in Japan. Our waiter was actually from Japan as well, and I connected with them about my previous Japan travels. The space is small, but worth the wait. Lots of punk rock gig flyers and merch on the walls, along with 70s punk heard over the speakers. There was also a group of customers who brought their own 7" rock singles to play over the turntable that is also connected to the speakers. Parking might be tough, but worth the fight! read more

Sadly, I have to say the sushi was sub par and dry. The hostess was so attentive and delightful. However, the sushi chef / owner was sooo pretentious and condescending. I have a lot of friends in the punk scene and as a fellow punk myself, felt so disappointed and underwhelmed. My partner and I lived in little Tokyo for many years had so many friends from different businesses in the neighborhood. Just disappointing. Funhouse is my favorite new place to eat in Little Tokyo. The food is amazing and the service is top notch. Your host and chef is legendary guitarist Tsubasa. We love him and his hardworking crew. The ambiance is cool and the decor is vintage boho punk rock. The walls are covered with original punk rock flyers, posters, guitars and photos of all the great punk bands. The music is always swinging. We have eaten there numerous times and will be returning for the mouth watering sashimi dishes and my favorite Japanese mountain fries. Great selection of Japanese beer and saki. There are vegan options as well which suits my wife and friends. I highly recommend visiting Funhouse you won't regret it. read more
