Funky Bow Brewery is definitely one of the most unique breweries I've ever visited! We stumbled upon it while driving around the area and decided to stop in for a drink. Important to note: they allow dogs. And while we LOVE dogs (we couldn't resist petting the ones running around), I can see how this policy might not be for everyone. The dogs roam freely and off-leash in a large indoor/tented area, which can feel a bit chaotic. A couple of things I wasn't thrilled about: the brewery is cash-only, and there's a $3 cover fee. For what? I have no idea -- there was no live music or anything like that during the hour we spent there. As for the drinks, the beer was... fine. I had the IPA, and while I didn't love it, I'd probably drink it again. The highlight was the pizza. It was phenomenal and made up for some of the other lows. read more

This place was certainly a vibe. Went on a Sunday afternoon. They dont take card but there was an ATM on premise to save my day. The kid working the front was SUPER nice, and the beers were good but I'm not sure if they were their beers or guest taps- the labeling isn't great. The pizza was good but not life changing. The real vibe is the fact that this is like a kindergarten gone wrong. The amount of wilding screaming kids was too much for me and look, I LOVE dogs, I brought my own but having someone else's off leash (dogs have to be off leash) and off leash kid begging for pizza while I'm trying to drink a beer in the sun was a little much. Recently went with a friend just to check it out & see if we'd bring our dogs there sometime, maybe find a new hangout spot for beers & lunch - granted my review is from the middle of the winter so take that with a grain of salt. The beers I ordered were not my favorite, but I will be honest when I say I'm not entirely familiar with Funky Bow's lineup - so kind of a miss. The wood fire pizza was good, no complaints! Service was fine, there's not any real interaction unless you're up at their service bar, friendly enough staff, although the young guy working the beer taps had no idea what he was serving, how to explain the beers - he may not have even been old enough to drink. I'm not sure. The thing that was just kinda ruined it for me, was the dogs pooping and peeing all over the inside of their venue. It just really, really threw me off. The location is one massive outdoor greenhouse tent with crushed rocks on the bottom with a fireplace, a stage for whatever band is playing & then a large area in the back where the food & drinks are served/made. It has a big camping area feeling. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty neat vibe, but with people completely unable to control their dogs, kids going wild & throwing rocks at the dogs with no one saying anything - I'd probably never bring my dog here, and in the winter, I can only imagine it's really hard to clean. read more

I have been wanting to check out this place for a long time and finally had the opportunity to do so recently. For the summer months, they have picnic tables and awnings set up with an outdoor kitchen area that includes pizza ovens and a fully stocked bar. The day we went there was live music so a very small cover charge per person. That was well worth it to enjoy live music while we were there. We arrived hungry so ordered the pizza and I highly recommend. The pizza was delicious! I will add if you don't like dogs you may want to reconsider a trip here, but I really enjoyed seeing the dogs running around playing with each other and enjoying the time just as much as their humans. read more

This was a very interesting stop on our many breweries in Maine. A lot of words come to mind, different, unusual and unique. I really like their beer and was excited to visit the actual brewery. The place was absolutely packed, it was tough finding a parking spot. Walking up there was a sign saying $3 cover charge but no one was there collecting... so in we went. Grabbed an IPA and went to find a picnic table to sit and enjoy the live music. Unfortunately, there were no open spots, so we stood. Even though they suggested social distancing it really wasn't the case.. to each as own. There were so many dogs just roaming around, not sure if they belonged to the owners or customers. A year ago today we held a large rehearsal wedding party at this place. It was the absolute perfect venue. The weather was slightly foggy misty rainy Maine evening- it kept the crowd down. The pizzas and beer were great, but the friendly service is what really made it a spectacular event!! The owner and staff were so accommodating. Love going to breweries that allow dogs to roam but when owners allow their dogs to jump on others and tables while you're eating is obnoxious and not even apologize or get their dog. Then the owner of the facility wants to berate patrons and state he is right, over the customer and causing a scene, without asking what happened if understanding the situation. This is a very unusual place! My first thought was how very dusty it was. We've had very little rain lately and everything is dry. This place has a strict NO-leash rule. I was hesitant to let my two small dogs off leash. Fortunately, my friend was in line for a drink and almost ready to order when I arrived and I jumped in line with her. I ordered a bottled ice tea, since I'm gluten free and can't drink beer. I didn't order pizza, again, because I'm gluten free (and I already had a plan to have dinner afterward knowing this.) My one dog that I worry about disappearing into the woods because he becomes deaf when on the scent, was occupied enough with the other dogs and searching for food drops, that he stayed close. My other tiny dog that is afraid of big dogs warmed up and took off at some point, too. She surprised me, and both dogs had a great time! I was a bit stressed, because you just don't know what may happen and I certainly don't need any vet bills!! The band, Fog Ave was great as usual; and the entertainment of the environment (and yard games) was great, too. The combination of me being gluten free (can't have the beer, nor pizza), and it being incredibly hot and humid and dusty was not so pleasant, worrying about my dogs was an added component that I think is better left at home (if possible, as my circumstances caused me to have to bring the dogs.) It's not a great place for those who are GF to fully enjoy. HOWEVER, if gf's not a concern and you don't mind dogs possibly pooping near where you eat...go have fun! read more

Went for the first and last time yesterday. All seemed great until the owner started yelling at a pregnant woman. All In her face. Not sure what happened but man what a complete jerk. Even if she did something, so unprofessional and not cool to yell at a person that way. I was disgusted after that. I got a Groupon as a gift for this place that sounded great--4 beers, 2 pint glasses, 2 pizzas. I'd had their porter before and I'd say the beer is the best part of the experience and the reason I gave 2 stars. There's also the potential to pet dogs, which was the best part for my wife. Atmosphere: woods, tents, dirt, picnic tables, porta-potties, construction. Unfortunately it was also raining and cold when we came so we tried to ask if we could exchange 2 of our draft tokens for cans/bottles/a growler to go and the 16 year old running the cash-only tent said no. I'd like to assume the actual brewers would be more understanding. Food: meh. We can make better pizza at home. It had the cheapest sauce and the "ricotta" looks like mayo from a squeeze bottle. We were starving when we ordered and were excited that they said 15 minutes. When we came back, he said "oh, oops, I forgot. Come back in 15 more minutes." Beer: I'd probably rate it a solid 3.5/5 overall--decent but nothing spectacular or unique. The glasses were mason jars, which I doubt are actually a pint. Music: meh. There's a guy playing guitar and twangifying popular songs from the 70s-90s. He started with Wonderwall by Oasis so you can take that however you want. Even on a crappy day there was a lot of people. Though, I'm guessing it's because there's nothing else to do here in this part of Maine, where you're surrounded by fields and auto shops. We'll probably give our two tokens away and call it a day. My wife summed it up: "It might be less miserable if it was warm, and the food was good, and the beer was better.. what's left? Oh.. nothing. But there's still a dog." First time here with some new friends that recommended it. We are glad they did! First things first - it's not everywhere you can get live music in the middle of the day... And if you love dogs, which we do, you will love it. If you don't, don't even bother, go somewhere else because you will hate it. Anyway, the pizza - top notch, we only got the pepperoni and it was really good, you could see them in the back stretching out the dough, it's real deal pizza, and they have some really interesting toppings - mashed potato pizza, brussels sprouts, and more. The beer selection is pretty good, but there wasn't much on the higher alcohol percentage. It's nice that they serve wine also. The music was a smidge loud, but we really liked it. Good singer & good songs . The bathrooms are across the parking lot, which was a cold walk, and they were a little cold inside, but clean. Seems like a good family place, tons of kids around. Funky Bow is one of the best things to happen to our little town, yes I'm a local from Lyman, and now when I'm referring to where I'm from out-of-state people know where I'm talking about! I have friends from Tennessee who have come to visit multiple times, and the request remains the same... 'can we go to Funky Bow this weekend?' Not only is the beer absolutely amazing [So Folkin' Hoppy and End of the Line are my favorites... I'm an IPA girl] but the pizza is to die for as well! The atmosphere is definitely a little country, dirt road, small town feel. People come here to drink good beer, dance to a band, and hang out without the dramatics of the restaurants or busyness of a city. It's the equivalent of sitting out back by a fire but with the addition of random chatter with new people. The tables are set up like long community tables, and if there's space, no one has an issue pushing over to make room. These people do the small town, but highly successful, business right. The staff is ALWAYS friendly and willing to help... [I mean I wanted to finally buy a sweatshirt and they happened to be out as of the beginning of the night, and the worker offered me his friends sweatshirt, that his friend was currently wearing haha... don't worry I'll be back to get my sweatshirt :) ] I'll be back every time I'm home visiting the parentals... and bringing whichever guests I have with me as well! Can't write a positive enough review of the Funky Bow! We planned a family Friday night dinner for 70 people, and Paul and Co. delivered! In spite of barely enough staff, he was a gracious host, the pizza and salad were great and the beer was outstanding. Most important was making us (parents of the bride) and the other family sponsors feel like we were exceptionally important to him and his team. We found the Funky Bow beer on the Amtrak and had to find the brewery. It's in a large "tent" down a dirt road but it's so fun! You buy 5 tokens and get 5 beers for $30. There's live music and it was so busy at 6pm on a Friday, which is fun! The beer is great- there's a wide variety. I haven't had the pizza yet, but have heard great things about it! I enjoy Funky Bow and what they have to offer. I thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere that they provide. In the summer months, Funky Bow houses large tents and picnic tables for people to enjoy, and they will often feature a local band for entertainment. In the colder months, Funky Bow has a large greenhouse where they serve their beer and make brick oven pizzas. Whichever time you come to Funky Bow, it's always a solid place to meet up with a group of friends for a relaxed atmosphere. As far as Funky Bow's beer, I think it's good. Is it anything special? No, but they do have some good options. I personally like their poker chip option where you can get 5 poker chips for $25. This allows me to save chips for coming back! Overall, Funky Bow is a solid establishment, especially in a rural place in Maine that doesn't have many other entertainment options. read more

Stopped there on Saturday to try the place while visiting in the area. We got there around 4:15. I was told that we would have to pay a cover charge for the music, I asked if we could stay outside and just drink our one beer and I was rudely told that we would still be able to hear the music and had to pay anyway. To make it even worse, was that one band stopped at 4:00 and the next one did not start until 5:00! We tried to stretch out our beer until the man started playing at 5:00 - we did but, honestly he was terrible and I feel bad saying that but he was awful. We left at the beginning of his 2nd song. Went to Funky Bow for the first time to celebrate my niece's birthday and was quite surprised to find Funky Bow not at all what I expected. It was a spacious area under a very large even tent with a dirt floor. They served fresh made wood oven pizza and their own beers. The pizza was very good. I don't like beer, so I can't comment on it personally, however I can attest, based on the people in my party, that they enjoyed many different varieties. The best feature was the fantastic live band known as Stolen Mojo. They were fantastic and played many of the rock and roll favorites I grew up with including my favorite, Don't Stop Believing by Journey. I will definitely come back again. read more

I'm 66 years old and know what a good time is. If you're a privileged type, in love with yourself, or the kid picked on in high school don't come here. If you have an open mind, are a free thinker,and love a good time this is the place to be. Beers great, foods great and the staff is fine. Some of the poor reviews said there were bugs, dust, dogs, and poor staff attitudes. It's a friggin outdoor venue in the woods of Maine. Leave the doilies at home. We heard great things. From lots of people. We were prepared to love it. We arrived at 5:30 PM on a Saturday afternoon and parking was already impossible. Still, we thought that was a good sign. We found a spot in a faraway parking lot/field and made a trek into the brewery/greenhouse/event tent/place with beer and music. The place was packed wall to wall. I'm not sure what time you need to get there to get a seat, but 5:30 is too late. Surprise #1: a cover charge for band nights. It was $3/person, so no problem and the band was great. Surprise #2: Beer Tokens. You buy them up front instead of paying at the bar. You get a discount for buying multiple and you can hold on to them and use them the next time you come. Surprise #3: The facility is very rustic. Dirt floor, plastic tarp walls, picnic tables. It would have been a bit more charming if I had worn suitable clothes. My dress shoes and wool coat were not suitable. After a few spilled beers (and the dogs) the floor is mud. #Surprise #4: Dogs! If I had spent a little more time on their website I would have known they were a dog friendly establishment. But there were a whole lot of dogs. They were all loose and mostly well behaved, but they begged for your food and urinated on the walls. I usually LOVE dogs but this was too much and a real turn off. The beer was good and though the line got long it moved quickly. There was no table to set our drink on so a flight of beer was out of the question. I wanted to like this place, and I will try again... I still have beer tokens. For now the best I can do is two stars. read more

If you're not a dog lover this place wouldn't be for you. There is a "no leash law" and dogs are just running wild. The staff were pretty friendly and the prices for everything were decent. We went with a groupon so it was definitely worth the trip. It was a little over an hour drive for us, but it was a beautiful day for it. Would I go back? Probably not. The property is cool & their beer is great, but I will never go back or recommend it to anyone who asks.. First time going, I didn't realize dogs had to be off leash, which I understand & respect. After looking around, & a comment from a women who said her dog was almost mutilated the first time they were there, I decided to put my 5 month old puppy in the car for her safety & comfort (weather was perfectly fine for this :)). Within 30 seconds of returning back I was accosted by a self proclaimed friend of the owner for my choice to do what's best for my dog. Had we not driven 30+ minutes out of our way we would have left right away but we decided to stay because we like their beer. He came up to me 3 times in the 20 minutes we were there - very rude, swearing & being aggressive towards me and friend (young women). We frequent breweries in NE & I've never experienced anything like this. It's unfortunate because we were so excited to check it out & that guy ruined it for us. Also, they say they are cash only but could hold a card while I went to the ATM (on property). Pretty fun time. We met some friends here on a sunny Saturday afternoon and the place was in full swing. As other reviews have mentioned, there's not a whole lot going on in this immediate vicinity, so this is the place for people to gather and have a good time. There were people of all ages, little kids running all over the place playing with firetrucks, older people there that popped in for a beer, college couples playing giant Jenga, etc. No one obnoxiously hammered. Really, the atmosphere and the people here were what made it for me. Honestly, with so many amazing breweries in Maine, they're probably outside my top-10, and they're not exactly pushing the envelope on any of their styles, but nothing is bad and it's really a matter of taste. I typically gravitate more towards pales and IPAs, but I think my favorite was the coffee porter here. Pizza looked good but didn't try any. A couple of tips: It seemed to be cash only though they did have an ATM. Cover charge is up to $3.00 per person and beers were $6.00, which I thought was a bit high directly from the brewery, but most pours were 16oz. We arrived slightly before the band started and they were pretty good, so $3.00 a person wasn't bad at all, but if I was there for a couple hours before the music started, I'd be thinking, wait, what did I just pay $3.00/pp for?? You have to stand in line to buy chips and then stand in another line to order a beer, but if they don't do this and the beer pourers are making change, it probably still takes as long, and there's likely some legal reason behind it too. Service was not exactly super friendly, but efficient. Bathrooms are portos and at least on this particular day were in rough shape. I'm used to closing my eyes, plugging my nose and getting through, but the ladies in the group were.... let's say not of the same mindset. Overall, a little pricier than I expected and I wouldn't come here with just me and my girlfriend like I would to other brewery hangouts, but a fun place to meet friends especially if you or they have kids that need to run around while you have an adult beverage. read more

Pretty good pizza and beer, some of the staff were friendly and some were very rude. It's essentially a dog park plus little kids, food, and drunk dog owners not paying attention. We had dogs jumping on our tables to steal our pizza, fighting near the table, pooping and peeing all over the place, and one snapped and almost bit my hand. I get the idea of having dogs offleash, but it seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen. The whole vibe also felt extremely unwelcoming to us as non-locals. 10/10 will not go back. read more
