Barreled Souls Brewing is a craft brewery that opened in Saco, Maine in July 2014. It was founded by childhood friends Chris Schofield and Matthew Mills. The two met in elementary school and have been friends ever since. After turning 21, Schofield received a homebrewing kit from his father and started homebrewing. In 2003, he got a job working as the assistant brewer at Federal Jack's brewpub in Kennebunkport. Later, Schofield was hired as the lead brewing consultant for the design and development of the Railroad Seafood Station Restaurant and Brewpub. Meanwhile, Mills worked in the hospitality industry and managed a number of bars and restaurants. He developed a reputation for pairing food, wine, and beer selections with his customers' tastes, interests, and budgets. Mills even opened his own high-end retail wine company. Finally the two friends decided to collaborate and open their own brewery. They opened their modest brewery in the basement of a law office. Unlike other breweries, 100% of Barreled Souls' beer undergoes primary fermentation in oak barrels as opposed to stainless steel tanks. This fermentation system is based off of the Burton Union system, which was a method of fermenting beer developed in England in the 1800's. Although they have a relatively small operation, Barreled Souls has earned a reputation for producing some of the best beers in Maine. I visited Barreled Souls with my older son this summer while my I was spending the week in Maine with my family. Barreled Souls had been on my brewery bucket list for a while. I was surprised to see what a small operation they were, but that was fine with me as I usually prefer smaller breweries. I initially ordered a taster flight which featured "Purple Rain" (Fruited Sour), "No Clean Cups" (Double IPA), "The Mind Flayer" (Imperial Stout), and "Knob Creek Extended BA Nebula" (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine). Every single beer that I sampled was fantastic! The brewery also has their own food truck dubbed "Barreled Souls Burger". I enjoyed their delicious "Bold Brunch" (quarter pound patty topped w/ hash browns, bacon, cheddar cheese & a fried egg) while my son enjoyed the "Tachos" (loaded cheesy tots topped w/ taco beef, jalapeños, onions, black olives, served w/ sour cream & salsa). I was so impressed with the beer that I ordered a second flight that featured "Speakeasy Red Sangria" (Red Wine Barrel-Aged Gose), "The Pineapple Upside Down" (Triple New England IPA), "Vecna" (Imperial Fruited Sour), and "Banana Bread at Work Dude" (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine; collab w/ Abomination Brewing). I was equally impressed with these beers, and I love all of the "Stranger Things" references in the beer names. Before leaving, I purchased a bottle of "Strawberry Jam Stay Puft" (Imperial Stout) to take home. I had an excellent experience at Barreled Souls and I highly recommend them to all serious craft beer aficionados! read more

**GF MENU OPTIONS!** Stumbled upon this brewery and so glad we did! Very cool atmosphere, friendly staff, and lots of great options for beer drinkers! I'm GF (allergy) and they had a whole portion of their menu dedicated to GF options - it was limited but nice to have!! I got a canned cider. Loved the unique seating. The place is much bigger than it looks! Lots of places to hang and connect both in and outside. We went on a Wednesday evening and there was a corn hole tournament happening. Loved this brewery we stumbled upon while staying in Kennebunkport. It's in the back of an antique home that has a law office inside, but the location is surprisingly large and very cool. Unique barrel-made furniture, fun murals, and a nice outdoor space with seating and cornhole. Great beers, with a good variety. If you're a sour person, this is your spot. We had flights and tried their sours, IPA/DIPAs, and stouts... They also have some gluten-free options as well as some non-beer choices including canned cocktails. I had my first Barreled Souls Brewing beer in the recent past and was very impressed with my outing with it. I have to say the beer I had definitely had more of an experimental slant to it which is always something I'm on the lookout for. I had the Speakeasy Strawberry Basil Smash which was a gose style beer. Kind of a lot going on with this gose as there is the strawberry and basil thing going on which balances off nicely as well as a bourbon flavor to it too. Gose beers are generally light and come off as a bit more simplistic but this one seems only slightly more complicated with it's flavors but when I say that I mean that in an endearing way and not a negative one. read more

One of the most unique breweries I visited while in Maine. Pulling into the parking lot I was thinking why are we at someone's house. Walking in you pass the outside seating area and some outdoor games. The inside was more like a basement, with lots of barrels, cool seating throughout. The barrel chairs were comfortable and cool. The walls are covered with all sorts of beer bottles from all over. The beer is delicious, absolutely loved their barrel fire triple IPA and continuum ipa. There's a souls society available if your a regular...if only I lived closer! Bartenders were very cool and knowledgeable. The place was very busy, but everyone is friendly. We met and talked with a lot of people. It became a big party. Overall this place is amazing. Definitely can't wait to go back! read more

Barreled Souls is one of my all-time favorite breweries! I live in NY, but I try to go every year if I can! (I even was a member one year). They have an ever-changing menu of delicious and unique beers! If you like beer in any capacity, you will find something there to like - they have IPAs, sours, creamy beers with lactose added, porters, ales, you name it! I've even brought several people that don't usually like beer, and they've all enjoyed it and found ones they liked. Some of my favorites have been the black forest cake beer (please bring it back one day!), a maple pancake beer, the coffee imperial stouts, and some of the goses. I also love the atmosphere - the inside is a cool basement filled with barrels, shuffleboard, and games. The outside is a beautiful space with yard games and ample places to perch. If you've never been, and you like beer, you should make Barreled Souls a destination! read more

Surprise surprise I am giving another Maine craft brewery a 5 star rating but Barreled Souls may be one of the most deserving. During the summer they have an outdoor area with cornhole being played frequently. Inside though is just as nice, although could be considered on the smaller side. It has just the right atmosphere that reminds me of drinking with friends in college. With some furniture made of old barrels and old cans and bottles scattered throughout from different breweries adds to the ambiance as well. Also helping to push them to 5 stars is the always friendly and attentive staff, even when crowded they greet you with a smile on their face. Lastly on to the part you are probably here to learn about is the beer. Easily one if not the best breweries outside of Portland and that holds true with Portland breweries included. They are not afraid to experiment with trying different things with their beers. I have enjoyed IPAs, barleywines, stouts, and sours, and more styles from them. My personal favorites have been their sours and higher ABV (usually barrel-aged) brews. While sometimes on the sweeter side they nail the flavors. A must stop for beer lovers in the area. read more

Barreled Souls was a very welcome stop on a recent trip to Maine, so much so that we ended up visiting multiple times over a long weekend. The taproom and outdoor space are cozy and unique, occupying the basement and yard of an old house. They have twenty taps and plenty of beer available to-go. After trying close to half of the tap list available while there I was really impressed with the consistently delicious beer across the breadth of their offerings. All of their beer is barrel fermented and is certainly unique. The Crazy Squares 2.0 was the standout for me, but all of the beers on offer that I tried were excellent. If you're local, lucky you to have this place nearby. If you're in the area and are a big fan of unique beers, this place is a must stop. read more

Wow!!!! So amazing. Almost didn't stop because they were listed in several places as not being family friendly and we are traveling with our kids. I'm glad I dug a little further to find reviews saying they had brought or seen children there. Ours are on the older side and we engage them when we go to breweries so it was fine. Definitely not a place to have little ones just running loose though. The beers were phenomenal. We tried a mixture of things since they do 4oz pours and all was wonderful. My one and only visit was unfortunately an all too brief stop on our way back home, but man was I pleased with what I walked away with after cashing in a butt load of accumulated brownie points in order to make it happen. The beers/tasters I managed to clumsily rifle through in short order were quite enjoyable, the walk-in garage/basement/speakeasy like vibe indoor seating was warm and welcoming (but cool, rustic and dimly lit in a literal sense), the outdoor seating was nicely laid out, the two people working the counter at the time were both very nice, and all the to-go beer I brought home was well enjoyed. (Unfortunately I'm all out now. I actually thought I had one more can last Saturday and was SO disappointed when I realized I did not.) Even the lady working the food truck that day was incredibly nice! I don't know.... The whole dark matter thAng... Tough for me to like. Some of the brews were quite tasty... The sour and gose were prolly the best. The DIPA was straight up just not good - almost undrinkable. Initially when drinking the variety of "dark matters" I was like whoah, this is really good. Then working my way thru the samples they were just too sweet, and too boozy for me. Also very very filling. Get a big ole beer gut after this stuff. I like a Heady Topper, a Second Fiddle, or single Fiddlehead. Locally I think the Lygonia and Allagash Saison are the best things out there. Pretty good beers overall, though with the variety of better beers that are in the immediate vicinity, unlikely to return. read more

What can I say they make oodles of sour beers!!!! The superman was the best! They also do some seriously great sounding stouts which are all worth a try when they are doing a take on a fluffernutter and smores!!! The taptenders are super nice and loved talking beer especially sours. They have a fantastic logo sweatshirt that I had to buy as this place had such a perfect collection of beers going!!! We sat outside in their adirondack chairs, which is dog friendly but not indoors. They have plenty of seating both in and out and it definitely felt comfortable. Tasty beers and a great little yard are what take this place from good to great. My husband and I have pretty opposite tastes when it came to beer but we were both satisfied with the selection here - for him, the sweeter things like barley wine and cask-aged dark beers; for me, creative and punchy sours. In fact, the superman punch sour was my favorite of the flight. We loved that the staff were welcoming and did not make it awkward that we'd brought our two year old to play at a brewery. With this being a kickstart establishment, it makes you appreciate the hard work in craft brewing even more and to see someone like this place be successful with big boys like Shipyard, Allagash and Bissell around, all of the beers that we tried last night were fresh, tasty and you could tell that they love what they do and they put that love into their craft. The entrance is in the back of the building in Saco but it is in a basement and everything is themed from the Barrels in the title around the entire room. The seats are barrel carved into lounge chairs and the pew style chairs along the back wall ae great for a group setting. There was a shuffleboard in the corner with scattered cribbage boards around the tables in the area around the seats. The brewer was so nice that when one of the people in our group randomly stated that they wanted to eat a hot dog, he fired up the grill and cooked hot dogs for anyone that wanted it. The prices were right and the staff was friendly. I personally had the Quaker State which was a delicious oatmeal stout and a craft brewed Dubble and it was amazing. Well done! Only draw is that it is out in Saco and not closer to Portland because if it was, I would be there every night! read more

So, to be honest, I'm not much of a beer expert. Most anything with alcohol works for me. Barreled Souls doesn't seem to have IPAs, which is my favorite, but that barely matters. I've been to most of the breweries in southern Maine and this one may have the best tasting room (Allagash has free tasters and is beautiful. But it's just so big and popular! Barreled Souls is still a secret). The brewery is easy to find immediately after Funtown on route 1 in Saco. They're known for their Burton Union brewing system, which is the only one in Maine and one of the few in the country I believe. About 15 beers are on tap, and most are interesting. This may not be a brewery for purists. Think high alcohol porters and ales, flavored beers, and other fun combinations. Outside are two sets of cornhole and various chairs and music. Inside is a great setup with tables and chairs made from barrels, several sets of cribbage and cards, and shufflepuck. On a Saturday afternoon the brewery was hopping with all ages taking advantage of the games. A flight of 4 tasters was $8, which is reasonable compared to other breweries. Barreled Souls, unlike most other local breweries, is open every day and late on weekends. For a casual great time, this is the best tasting room around. read more

I go through "beer phases". Sometimes I'm all about it and sometimes I just need a break. Whenever I do circle back around to loving the sweet nectar of the local gods, I always find that stouts and sours are two of my all time favorites. And wouldn't you know... Barreled Souls does both to near perfection (in my totally uneducated, "just-a-lover-of-good-tasting-things" opinion). Having come with a group on a rainy Sunday at the end of summer we walked past grills and a plethora of adirondack chairs to the brewery and tasting room. Loved how wooden and rustic the decor was, and how warm and inviting the space immediately felt. I can definitely see how people would want to spend their afternoons here; it feels like your in your home brewing best friend's refurnished basement. There weren't too many people when we arrived, however those who were there were clearly locals though: two men played the shuffle board while two other men watched the football game. After a couple hours, the space was filled nearly shoulder to shoulder, though. Good for you, Barreled Souls! Beer samples come in different size options (and they're CHEAP too, so pace yourself!) Besides the games (cornhole is available when it's nicer out, there's also a cribbage board and some decks of card in the tasting room), the amazing furniture made of actual barrels, and the staff seems deeply passionate, the beer - which is why you're coming here since it's the soul (sole) thing they offer - itself is on point. I tried: + Eat a Peach (4.6% ABV): "a sour wheat beer fermented with oven roasted peaches" - SOUR. No, but really, it's SOUR. I'm not sure I entirely picked up on peach exactly, just general fruit. I thought this was smooth, refreshing, and fun... a total warm weather beer! + Quaker State (5.5% ABV): "a traditional Oatmeal Stout with roasted barley and caramelized malts that brings a sweeter rounded malt profile with a roasty finish" - I am a FOOL for not getting this; it was delicious. It tasted so chocolatey and velvety. I could easily see myself drinking this when it's cold outside. I am so excited to try their Nitro version and their Vanilla/Coffee version, too! - MEmosa (5.8% ABV): "a light, clean blonde ale made with orange zest and dry hopped with Sorachi Ace hops" - Personally, it was my least favorite of the three options. But I noticed my usual non-beer drinking friends drank theirs entirely so that definitely says something. I just thought it was a little too bland for me personally and was expecting a real wallop of that orange taste. Unfortunately much of what we wanted to try was "just kicked recently" and would be available "soon-ish"; not really great information if we were planning a return trip but what can you do with such a small brewery? Maybe they should have removed the no longer available options off the board, but it's fine - just another reason to come back and bring more friends! We have been wanting to stop in since they opened; a year ago, maybe? We finally were without the dogs and in the area free to stop by. They have a nice outside area lit with lots of seating and bean toss (or corn hole). Once you enter you'll pass some brewing equipment and there is a wall of beer bottles facing you. Turn the corner to the cozy tasting room with cards and such. I like the multiple sizes of beers including a 4oz for $1.50! What?!?!? We had 3 8pz beers, a 4oz beer and a freshly filled from the tap growler to go for just under $25 before tip. Nice! This is definitely a chill place to hangout and taste some great beers brewed on site. We'll be back with friends for sure. read more

Not for the faint of heart!!! When I Visited in late summer, there were six gose and three DIPA's! The flavors in each beer were very intense and in my humble opinion, amazing. Walking into this place is an experience in itself... You go down into their cellar? basement? dark and rustic tasting room. All jokes aside this place has got some strong character to match its equally strong beer. This was last on our list of breweries to hit out of Portland and we were so happy we did not skip over it! We ordered a flight which was LITERALLY $6 (coming from SF this is unheard of) and loved everything-- our group favorite was actually Strawberry Jam (4.6%) which is a REALLY good sour beer and actually the lightest one on the list, so if you think you need to order something strong and heavy here think again. We also indulged in Dark Matter (10.1%) and Hillrock Bourban Barrel Aged Honey Pot (14% whooOo if you like sweet and strong get this) and Mocha Grande (7.5%) which were all really unique and something we wouldn't normally try. A no-nonsense brewery that you wouldn't find anywhere else, definitely give it a try if you're in the area! read more
