Great place to meet friends and drink your ever lovin face off. Off the overly beaten path that is Ninth Avenue, The Gaf provided a great backdrop for a reunion of some close friends. The low tables were surprisingly comfortable to talk around, and watching the dart league have at it across the floor just added to the atmosphere. This place SUCKS! The bartender was a massive asshole and publicly shamed us for the drinks we bought. THEN we left our tab open and we went to get our card at the end of the night they had LOST IT! If that is not the most important part of bartending then maybe I'm an idiot but these people must be incompetent or something. Also this yelp photo is wildly deceiving. Felt like we were in the Grendel's grundle not even kidding... This was the shittiest bar experience I have ever had. You're better off ripping up your money for fun than going to this bar, which is essentially what we did minus the fun part. read more

A small bar in the middle of Hell's Kitchen. The layout is conducive to mingling (there are tables in the middle of the bar and walkways on all four sides of tables). The drink specials are pretty good - the G&T I ordered was decently made (aka pretty strong). read more

It's a nice bar in an area full of bars. The layout is cozy and comfortable. There are plenty of women there which is a good sign for any bar. Women have much better taste than men in general. i discovered this joint a few weeks back and its crazy cause i live a block away from here. it makes me sad that i didnt know about this place until recently, but none the less...this place is worth checking out. for a bar, this place isnt too terribly packed and pretty quiet for a bar. so for the most part, you can actually have a conversation without having to yell at someone. so thats always a plus. the atmosphere is good, its a good and simple bar...you wont find anything fancy, just a place to relax and have a good time. the beer selection is pretty good and they have a fair amount of bottles as well. the staff is good and attentive and the people are pretty darn cool. at least from the times i've gone. another great thing about this place is that they have two dart boards. i dunno about y'all...but i just started playing darts, and im not very good...but man...its freakin' fun. so as cool a place this is, the two dart boards make it that much better. so if y'all have time, come check this place out. read more

There's nothing particularly special about this place but the one reason it sticks in my memory like a calcified piece of gum under a 5th graders desk, is because this is where I had the "I love you, but I'm not in love with you" talk with She Who Will Not Be Named. I didn't dub her that, my friend K did because she doesn't want to hear her name spoken in her apartment...I tend to agree. Anyway, the space is fairly large, with some sort of discernible downstairs area, perhaps its just storage, I don't really know. The bartender seemed friendly, and smiled at me, a knowing smile (probably because he knew what was in store for me); as he handed me a Makers Mark and a Bass. We sat there, speaking in broken-halting sentences, intermittently smoking cigarettes before we both realised this was doing neither one of us any good. We went our separate ways. Me to another bar to tie one on with a good buddy of mine, she to "meet a friend" (who managed to morph from a 24 year old girl with theatrical aspirations to now ex-buddy's friend...). I don't find myself on the West Side all that often, and the next time I might just walk into the Gaf, order a Makers and a Bass and count my lucky stars there are still people in this world to keep you on your toes. read more

The Gaf rocks! Came here with a few friends last weekend for their Great Gafsby event and had a blast! They had a blackjack and roulette table but the highlight of the night was when everyone drank champagne they poured down this ice sculpture. It's very casual, comfortable and affordable which is very hard to find in Midtown. It's an old skool NY Irish pub. You won't find any tourists here. Only locals. This bar is a lot of fun. There are two dart boards, some games and a good crowd of people. Pretty standard, the bar has a jukebox and ATM too. Any night of the week there are a number of locals who are friendly and will strike up a conversation with anybody. The bartenders, Pete and Pat, are great and you'll never find yourself jumping around to get their attention for a drink. Since it's close to midtown, earlier in the night you'll see some after work drinkers. In general, the bar has an awesome neighborhood feel to it and is a lot of fun. Also - there are a couple of comments about the bathrooms but I'm not sure why. They're clean (upstairs and downstairs), and I'm a girl so I would definitely notice! read more

Always suggesting to my friends that we either start our nights or end them at the Gaf West. Very laid back atmosphere, absolutely friendly bartenders who know how to gracefully handle the entire bar whether its packed or empty. Somehow they always remember what i am drinking or make suggestions based on the last time I was in. Its funny because I dont think I am a "regular" but they treat me like one. Which makes you want to be one. Isnt that the definition of a perfect bar? I have never waited for a drink. It becomes a fun scene on Friday and Saturday's but never too packed that you can't find a place to sit or rest your beers and elbows. I can't say enough about the crowd. One of the BEST local bars I've visited. Very laid back yet anything goes. Chat, play darts, order food delivered (a truly cool service). Decent selection of draft beers considering the bar style. I've been going to the Gaf for quite some time now and think it is truely one of the last remaining bars in NYC where you can hang out and have a few pints and very reasonable prices for the area.. I pretty much agree with everything that is said in prior reviews about the tenders being friendly and honestly, some of the best bartenders in the city as you rarely have to wait on a drink, even when its packed.. the bar has a traditional pub feel as I don't think the point of the bar is to appeal to the club - $14 martini drinking crowd.. The bar does usually have a lot of regulars who are actually really fun and add a "home town" feel to the bar.. At times the bar can definately get rowdy, but on a Saturday night during the Winter who isn't looking to get after it.. maybe make some bad decisions.. ha, who knows.. I disagree with the Andreas H. post because athough loud at times (when rowdy), the "desparate looking dudes" are there for the same reason why many people (including you) go to the bar, to hang out and have a good time.. If you feel threathened, I would suggest not bringing your wife.. haha.. Also, for those who don't know, the word "Gaf" has multiple meanings including: Home, to reveal a secret or a social faux pas.. All of which could fit on any given night.. Lastly, recently they just rearranged the dart boards and renovated the bathrooms which definately added value to the experience. All in all, the bar is a fun time, the people I have met throughout the years going to the Gaf have been nothing but fun, down to earth people and I enjoy going to the Gaf and look forward to it soon! read more
