The place is nice and cozy, and the service is consistently good. The food was good, but I had to take a star away because of the price. The base price of the Ramen is $20 (protein is not included in the price), then they charge for egg and 1 slice of pork ($5 each), so you could really be paying an upwards of $30-$35...God forbid I want 2 slices of pork!! This is a HUGE turn off for me, especially considering the competition. For example if you go to Tonchin, the pork and egg are included in the price ($23) and the ramen is amazing!!...and it's a Michelin star restaurant on top of that. Wanted to love this place but had several issues with my order. I got the miso ramen and was given the wrong protein but the server was accommodating and brought out another plate of the protein I wanted right away. However it was just so salty that it was almost inedible, also the broth wasn't as hot as I would've liked it, it was more lukewarm which was disappointing on a cold day. After not having been back to Chuko for a while I was extremely disappointed to learn that they have raised the prices to $30 for a bowl of ramen if you want to have standard toppings on it. A bowl of ramen at that price is obscene. If you are charging that much it better be damn good. While it's decent it is not worth it. Also, the Sapporo on tap was stale and bitter. Was craving ramen and Ramen Danbo stopped taking orders so tried this place as a backup option. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype and expectations I had for it. Got the regular miso ramen and vegetarian version, along with the salt and pepper wings. The ramen was ok at best. Both were fine, but not nearly as good as Danbo or Wanpaku. The wings themselves were a miss for me. Over breaded, burnt, and dry. Big miss there unfortunately. So unbelievably disappointing. We ordered via Postmates and when our 2 ramens and tots arrived, the noodles were cold. Not just like cold from being outside, but refrigerator cold. Then I see this piece of paper stapled to the bag instructing us to literally heat the food. Cooking dinner was quite literally the opposite of what I was trying to do tonight. Nevertheless, I heated up the ramen. Turns out, it's also just really bad. Super bland, even after adding salt, there is absolutely no intrinsic flavor. Might I also add that it's exorbitantly expensive. The ramen shows a base price of $17 but to add literally anything to it (scallions, meat, egg) it's a few dollars on top. The tots were $13 and got about 10 tots and ironically were too salty. Geez. I am super confused as to how this place has gotten any hype, perhaps it's old hype and things have changed but this place is not good. There is no love or thought put into the food or the customer experience. Handing over ice cold noodles that you definitely parsed out earlier in the day or week does not make your customers feel like you care at all about what you are doing. I really love this ramen! I've had the sesame garlic ramen and the soy ramen and it is excellent. It's a very unique, savory tasting ramen, like nothing I've really had before. I also love the ambiance of the interior. It's a really cool place to hang, and the staff is very friendly. Also happy hour runs until 7:30 and you get a free Sapporo with any entree. Sesame garlic ramen, with a soy marinated egg, and chili oil on the side is *chefs kiss.* I opted for the vegan/vegetarian broth and it was perfect for a winter day in Brooklyn. Very flavorful broth and all the more flavorful once the chili oil was added. The tofu was also breaded so it soaked up a lot of the broth which made the soft tofu even better to eat. I also ordered the spicy cucumber appetizer which was a perfect spicy but cooling addition to the very hot ramen. Plus since it's cucumber it wasn't incredibly filling so I was able to enjoy both a side and a main dish pretty easily. I ordered the sesame garlic ramen. I found the broth to be a little bland, but it had pork bone flavor and some garlic notes. I thought it would be creamier based on the opaque look, but it's thin and sort of oily. The chili oil I got on the side totally transformed the broth. Do not miss out on it. It's not very spicy at all but it's packed with savory fried garlic and fried shallot and it really fills out and intensifies the flavor already present in the soup. The noodles were thin and held the broth well. The chashu was a thick slab and very tender and perfectly fatty. The egg was quite a bit sweeter than most ramen eggs I've tried but it was definitely well cooked. I got the Chuko Favorite Ramen, because it included a little of everything and that's the best way to taste a little of everything in one sitting. Flavor on top of flavor, wholesomely delicious and satisfying. This consists of a sesame pork broth with pork belly and spicy ground pork, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, a soft egg, scallion, nori (seaweed), and rayu (chile oil) on the side. That heat was beautiful. I also got the tasty Pork and Shrimp Gyoza, wish I had ordered two of them. You get five per order. These are Pan-seared so they're crispy on one side, tender on the other. These traditional dumplings are filled with pork and shrimp and served with a spicy dipping sauce. I tore through them and drank up that good sauce. I never attempted to order ramen thru delivery because I was worried that the noodles would be soggy, but decided to check out to see how it gets delivered. Covid review! They have 3 tables indoor. None outside that I saw. We were second in line on a wait list but waited almost an hour or more. It was well worth the wait. The appetizer and the ramen came quick. We started with the Pork bun and it was so melt in your mouth delicious. The pickles cut through the fat and it really got the juices flowing for the main course. I got the soy ramen and my partner the miso ramen. The soy definitely had more flavor and was more savory but the miso had a feel good comfort vibe. We added eggs and extra meat and finished the whole meal within the hour. There was one waitress for the whole restaurant who did not check in with us and at the end, when we tipped accordingly, she demanded and bullied us into tipping more. Choices are fairly limited too, only had 4 types when I was there: sesame garlic, miso, soy, or kimchi. Shrimp buns were okay, we got two of them for $5 each. Bowls of ramen are $14 but they doesn't come with any proteins/meat. Your veggie add ons will cost you $1 each, like scallion?? If you want proteins/eggs/fried tofu, it's another $1.50 per topping. Glad they moved into a new location with more seating and now take credit cards. I've had everything here and it's all great - the pork buns are fantastic. My favorite ramen bowls are the Kimchi Ramen (amazing), and the bowl formerly known as pork bone ramen, now known as the Sesame Garlic Ramen (as apparently all broth is made from pork bone now except the vegetarian Soy Ramen), and you can choose the type of protein you'd like to add. I recommend adding the spicy ground pork and asking for a side of garlic chili oil (I usually dump the whole thing in). I believe seating is first come, first served, but service is always great. He'd been asking me to try this place for a long time, so I finally gave in, and we came here on a Wednesday night. They don't take reservations, so we came here at 5:30, and were able to be seated immediately. When we arrived, there was one other table eating outside. All staff were in masks, and tables were spaced an appropriate distance from one another. To start, we had the okonomiyaki tots, and the pork buns. The okonomiyaki tots were a creative spin on a traditional Japanese dish, replacing the octopus balls with tater tots to create a tasty fusion dish. We were both fans of these. The pork in the buns was fatty and tender, just how I liked, but the bun wasn't as soft as I would have liked. My husband enjoyed the buns a lot. We didn't have to wait very long for our ramen. I got the kimchi ramen and found the broth to be rich and flavorsome without being overly salty. The noodles were freshly made, and soft but with good texture. I enjoyed my husband's miso ramen a lot as well. Would recommend this place for great ramen in Brooklyn, and will definitely return. read more
