Banh Mi, Cafe Sua Da and Desserts! I am going to have to agree with Christina that this place is not the same anymore. I stopped by last week and didn't quite feel the same about it. But, this is just my opinion. Several of my friends love this place. They love the banh mi and the ice coffee. As far as the banh mi, I would prefer going to Thanh Tam on Euclid, Banh Mi Che Cali down the street (Brookhurst/McFadden) or Top baguette. I read some of the posts. I am not a fan of Gala's Cafe Sua Da. It is sweet. Again, Banh Mi Che Cali is down the street. Plus, theirs is stronger. There are a couple of other places a prefer for cafe sua da also. I am super surprised that Gala Bakery does not have over 2000 stellar reviews as this place has the best iced coffee (cafe su dua... spelling?)outside of Vietnam -- and I have been to Vietnam 3 times so that makes me an expert ? Haha. . . Anyways, the coffee is full of tiny ice balls so you may want to buy two. I have been coming to Gala Bakery since 2010 and the price has gone up a little bit it's less than 3$ for each iced coffee. The coffee is strong tasting, super cold, buttery, and refreshing. Service is always friendly with only one or two people present in the whole small bakery. You can also buy a half gallon to bring home and put your own ice into. The pastries are good too, although there is another bakery nearby with better croissants. But the food is always fresh. I prefer the location next to Asian Garden Mall, but this location next to Stater Bros is the same quality. Whenever I'm in the OC or en route to LA, I always visit Gala to raise my blood sugars. Little Saigon is the Mecca for Vietnamese food, but every time I swing into town, there's only one thing I consistently crave - a bánh mì pate xíu mi from Gala Bakery. For a mere three dollars, it's hands down the best Vietnamese bánh mì I've ever had anywhere. Their other sandwiches are also good, but I consistently get the pate & xíu mi (ground pork). This is not a combo on the menu, but if you ask for them to spread some pate on it, they don't mind. Also, they also have the best ca phe sa á of any eatery I've been to. Great food, cheap prices. The only thing that would make this place better is if they had a place to sit down - you can really only walk in to get your food to go at the moment - and if they were open on Mondays! read more

My uncle raved about this place, so I gave it a try. Before I came here, my parents warned me that the sandwiches weren't that good and that the service/ attitude of the workers were even worse (i.e. haughty). I shrugged off my parents and went anyway. I ordered a banh mi with just cha lua (I didn't get dac biet because I'm not a fan of the fatty red-colored meat). The worker seemed nonchalant, but I didn't think much of it. After I received my sandwich, I was disappointed to see that they forgot the pickled vegetables. This review is just for their iced coffee. My friend brought me here to pick up some coffee because we both needed some and she has been raving about this place! Needless to say, her raving was well-deserving. Their Vietnamese iced coffee is pretty good and is not as sweet as some of the other places I've tried. It didn't taste as strong and felt a bit watered down as I continued drinking but maybe its because the ice melted so quickly! I dont understand why cutting is ok. We were in line and an older gentleman came waited after us then just walked right in and cutter us. They said he ordered ahead of time because he didn't have his mask and was told to get a mask. If he had to leave then he shouldn't have been able to order. I forgot to review this hole in the wall spot a few days ago. We've been going here for years and have never been disappointed with the cold Vietnamese coffee with a charbroiled chicken sandwich. Had their cafe sua da. They pulled a premade one (with ice) from the fridge, which was kind of random. But luckily, it didn't look like the ice melted and it didn't taste watery. My boyfriend liked their coffee, I thought it was okay. It reminded me of 7 Leaves House Coffee but a tad stronger in coffee taste. Probably would go here instead of 7 Leaves when I'm craving that type of iced coffee (the creamier, sweeter type). read more

The "mothership" Gala Bakery- I've been going to the Gala Bakery Pit on Bolsa and Moran for years, so I thought I should at least stop by the main one on Brookhurst. Went there around 9 am on a Saturday morning- THE LINE TO GET IN WAS OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR! I noticed that people weren't even bothering to park to get their goods- they would just stop their cars in the middle of the parking lot, get in line, then leave a few minutes later once they got their fix. Just like everyone else says, the iced coffee here is the BEST in Little Saigon, and the chicken pate chaud is as crispy on the outside as it is moist on the inside. Only thing that sucks is that it's CLOSED ON MONDAY- no worries though, the one on Bolsa and Moran is open, so you can always go to that one. On a random note, there's this sad homeless guy that's always sitting on the ground right next to Gala, usually with a briefcase full of documents, an ash tray, and a glass that's sometimes full of cash and sometimes isn't. Don't know what the deal is- hopefully he wasn't recently laid off. Sigh... a sign of the times. read more

Gala Bakery was one of the handful of places that I tried, when work got me to Garden Grove. Like most of the other places that I visited, I found it through Yelp, saw good reviews and decided to give it a try. I've been here a couple of times in the late afternoon so I did not have any problem finding parking in the large lot that also hosts Stater Brothers on the extreme left hand corner. Each time I encountered a random person (homeless I assume) hanging around outside who insisted on greeting me while I walked in. This seemed to be a recurring theme at other establishments around Garden Grove which taught me to ignore these requests and move on. I encountered an elderly gentlemen behind the counter who was very sweet and polite. A welcome change compared to other establishments that I visited. The first time I got the Vietnamese iced coffee with milk (cafe sau da, $2.50) and pate chaud (puff pastry with chicken filling, $1.85) and a sesame ball ($0.50). I'm not sure if they take card as I generally pay in cash around Garden Grove. The Vietnamese Iced coffee was a let down. It was not strong enough to give you the kick that is expected from Vietnamese coffee, but the sweetness level was fine so with both these factors combined it became an overly sweet drink with too much ice. On the other hand the pate chaud was too die for. I've not had many of these before so I don't have a frame of reference but as long as puff pastries go this one was as good as it gets. FRESH, flaky outside with the chicken filling inside, that felt a little sweet. The sesame balls were not the hard deflated ones that I've eaten at Lee's but were soft and chewy with a mild sweet filling, which made me like them a lot. On subsequent visits I've limited myself to the pate chaud and sesame balls and have been satisfied each and every time. I don't visit Garden Grove very often but whenever I do, I'm tempted to pick up a couple of pate chaud from Gala Bakery. read more

Every time I walk in here I get in line and start scratching my neck like a crack addict waiting to get his "medicine". The line slowly moves forward, I get out my exact amount of $2.25 for the iced coffee in anticipation. The cashier asks me what do I want... I want.. THE ICED COFFEE. He/she turns around and walks towards the fridge. The fridge door swings open, reaches inside with one arm, and pulls out a container holding my... PRECIOUS. He/she comes back... Being in Santa Ana with an abundance of new Vietnamese friends, all of which being natives to the area, has afforded me the convenience of discovering the best and worst that Garden Grove and Westminster have to offer to a noob such as myself. As Lee's coffee once sat at the top of my iced coffee totem pole, way too much coffee concentrate with very little ice, has recently had me in search of a new vice to replace the once mighty Lee's. Gala now lays undisputed claim to that #1 position. While the price ain't any prettier than Lee's, the coffee is better and a tad different in flavor profile. As of late, I've had to cut my traditional morning boost out of my life as I prep for Summer 12 and what I hope to be the first summer since middle school that I take my shirt off at the beach. Or even the shower. The banh mi sandys, I was told, were spectacular. Not quite, my friend. I had the egg and veggie one for breakfast on the way to work and, well, it disappoints. Smaller than most, definitely less veggies than most, and most certainly greasier than all. First and last time I'm dining on their sandys. Fried and baked goodies line the small window, hand-written pricing on paper steaming away in the heat. The place is quaint and simple. Nothing more than what you need, no bells and whistles to occupy your mind. A line is frequent but the pace at which the employees work ensures timely delivery of whatever it is you require. The lady in the morning is as sweet as a nickel (makes no sense, I know, but sounds cool, right?) and always welcomes me with a toothy smile. Gala is clearly winning. read more

Often when I am down OC, I will stop by this place to get my favorite drink (la dua dau xanh) pandan with mung beans. It never disappointed me Xcept for the fact that it had so much ice. With just a few sips, it would be all gone. Today, the ice was less but the taste was off. It was not as flavorful as before. I will switch it to 5 stars when the original taste is back. It gives me the perfect amount of jitter whereas most other places would give me undesirable side effects :D Gala's coffee has just the perfect sweetness and it's best to drink it right away before all the ice melts. And it does its job of waking me up. I transform into the unstoppable hulk power ranger typing away furiously at my cubicle. And for only $2.25 for this magical potion, amazzzing! I used to come here every morning before work even though its out of the way and so I'd show up 15 minutes late. See how I jeopardize my job just for some good coffee. I have been coming here every since I was a little kid. This is one of my favorite places to get banh-mi's in OC. I prefer this place over Lee's any day! I always get the same things here, which are: -Banh mi ga (chicken): They use shredded chicken and it is delish! I always put siracha in it and it is perfect. Their baguettes are soft and perfect. I also like to add pate to it. -Pate chaud: warm and flaky meat pies here are also a must -Iced Coffee: I love coffee and they have really good iced coffee. Vietnamese coffeee is the best! instead of adding cream and sugar like most coffee places, this place like all Vietnamese places use condensed milk, which makes it the best! This place was a lot smaller than I expected. But...it was so good so don't let the low stock displays fool you. They bring out the hot eggrolls, Banh Cam and Pate Chaud as they are sold so that they keep the freshness. I bought some Chicken Pate Chaud and some mini Banh Cam and it was soo good! The Chicken Pate Chaud was warm and nice flaky crisp and the Banh Cam was also perfectly sweetened with the right crunch. I just wish I bought more! Next Time! read more

Gala used to really be on point but their quality has really gone down lately. I swung by with my siblings a few weeks ago and was really disappointed. Cà phê sa đá (Vietnamese Iced Coffee) was really lackluster as it didn't have that strong coffee flavor and was almost watered down. We had to ask for them to add more "coffee concentrate" in it which is pretty shocking because Vietnamese coffee is known for being almost too strong for most people. Had both pork and chicken pâté chaud --savory meat pies. Nice flaky pastry dough but was seriously short on filling, although what was there was seasoned nicely. The bánh cam (sesame ball) was really oily and chewy. I had the Bánh Mì Thit Nuong -- BBQ Pork sandwich. It was a good sized sandwich, especially for the price. But the meat was way too sweet and the bread tasted old. Both such crucial components to bánh mì. I had to douse mine with Sriracha to counter the sweetness. Despite everyone's raving reviews here on Yelp, I wouldn't recommend it anymore. read more

This rating is based solely on their Cafe Sua Da. That being said, their Cafe Sua Da is the BEST in Orange County!! It has a really good balance of that coffee taste with just enough sweetness. Plus they use crushed ice which is a big plus for me. I don't know what it is, but its something about the texture of crushed ice that just makes it all the better. I used to go every day 3x a day between this location and moran street. The family that owns this place is really sweet. Parking is never a issue at this location because everyone parks everywhere. I always order the ice coffee and pate chaud. I misss it and therefore im here again. I was going to 7 leaves for awhile but they dont have any food or breakfast snacks. Indeed, my first impression of Gala was, am I in the right place? Gala is so small that at first you can't believe this is the entire store given the great reviews. I've only stopped by Gala in the morning, and its definitely a convinent, alternative to McDonalds or Burger King. For breakfast, I get this small snack; I don't know the specific name, but it reminds me of a hot pocket, and its so delicious, so warm, and so fresh in the morning that its an instant pick me up. It's like a slap in the face, but in a good way. Wakes you up. And if that doesn't get your day going, then vietnamese coffee definitely will give you a kick in the pants. Oomph! One-two combo! The one item that I often come back for is the PATE CHAUD. It is French for chicken pastry in a nutshell. If you never had this ever, you MUST try it here. I can eat a dozen of these in one sitting but my hips and stomach line would hate me. The soft and flaky crust is...JUST...perfect. The chicken filling is nice and moist. They are palm size and cost you less than a dollar each. You can't go wrong here folks! Besides the pate chaud, I've only tried their banh mi once and I thought it was...okay. Nothing to rave about. i like their vietnamese iced coffee. its very strong and not too sweet. but their green bean and some kind of weird jelly drink is not worth a try. green bean is made from powder and taste too powdery. the jelly drink taste very unsual and the texture is just weird!! parking is very hard to find. all the aggressive asian drivers will give you a really hard time to find parking and stay patient at the same time. service is not so great!! slightly higher price. $2.50 for all drinks and $18 for half gallon of green bean drink. read more
