I came here after mass one day on my lunch break. The menu is very simple and includes soups, sandwiches, salads, and pizzas, among other items. I decided to try the turkey pesto panini. I'm a bit picky and ordered no tomatoes in it, which wasn't a problem at all. I waited only a few minutes for my lunch to be ready. It was served with potato chips, which weren't oily or greasy. I think my panini was pretty good. It did have some cranberries in it, which gave it a good flavor. The pesto wasn't too prominent, which is something I would want. I'd definitely come back and try some of their soups. The prices here aren't bad either. With tax my sandwich came out to a little over $8. It was filling enough to hold me over until dinner and didn't make me feel too full. I do recommend this place and I'll definitely be back! read more

Cafeteria style layout and it seems a few people from around the area come here to have a quick lunch. I had a turkey panini which was ok... I think if the bread should have had a little butter on it so the panini would not taste burned? I don't know....i make then at home and I add butter before toasting and it comes out great. This eatery is attached to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the monolithic archdioces on Temple Street. Like the other recent area cafeterias attached to large imposing public structures, this one is bright and cheery with colorful signage. It took me a while to figure out what exactly I wanted. This place offers pizzas by the slice, deli sandwiches, panini's, soups, salads, and pre-packaged lunch items; all of them a wee bit more expensive than really necessary. My panini (kettle chips included) and small soda (free refills) edged close to nine bucks. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my turkey pesto panini. It looked, eh... The sandwich was on that marble bread, but it was nicely toasted and fresh. I didn't taste much in the way of pesto, but overall it was a nice sandwich. Nothing really to induce that chair-bound yummy dance, but it was deceptively decent. There are some tables inside, but most people elect to eat outdoors, either on the walls or on one of the smallish circular tables in the courtyard shaded by one of the free-standing umbrellas. That, plus the adjoining olive tree garden make this place a little oasis in the middle of government issue drab-ola. You almost forget that you're in Downtown L.A. and it was a nice feeling. At first I felt a little weird sitting there since I'm not all that religious. Is it okay for me to eat here? If the pope sat down next to me, would I hide my face? Judging by the way I used to tithe, years ago, at Buddhist services, I'd say that I was pretty well covered for several weeks, at least. Besides, I was curious and jury duty was the only chance to check this place out. I quickly figured that many the people there today had little to do with the Catholic church so I might as well relax, too. New job, new area, new eats. I start off my eating journey of my new surroundings with a review of this place. They have paninis, pizzas, and sandwiches. The paninis are very fairly priced at $6.50. It also comes with a side of chips (you can substitute for salad). I got the pastrami, with a side of chips. And since I have no self control I got a cup of minestrone soup too. The soup was pretty good rich hearty and full of crap. The sandwich itself was excellent. It had all the components you look for in a pastrami sandwich which is a generous amount of meat and zero veggies. And the chips were just chips. There is also an outdoor seating area which is very nice and relaxing since the surrounding area is super clean and quiet. I only saw this place after leaving the criminal courts building. I was parked at the Cathedral and had never walked the grounds. I purchased a coffee (self serve) and a fresh raisin danish. They have plenty of outdoor seating. The coffee was good and I really liked the danish. The staff here is very friendly. I noticed an area that has pre-made meals. Outside it was really peaceful. I was surprised how clean the area was. A couple of politicians were sitting next to me chatting up the day's scoop. Hubby had salad out of the cooler (10:45), and an omlet. He said it was nice, grilled onions and cheesy! So we are now stuffed. Now shortly after 11:00 they put out then lunch salads .. Been here a few times now for lunch. It is sort of like cafeteria food mixed with a lunch counter. The location is great and if you attend mass they will validate you enough time to eat lunch as well. Service is ok for what it is. The food however can be hit or miss. There are several menu options - usually an entree or two, a pizza of the day, and a few regular items. I tend to like the pizzas, some of the entrees (usually pasta but sometimes other dishes), some of the sandwiches, and almost all of the soups which are some of the best things they offer. Downsides? When I come on Wednesday for the music they are often out of the specials by the time the performance is over. While nothing here is bad, there are also few hits. Unfortunately the prices are somewhat high for what is not guaranteed to be a good meal. That said, I always enjoy eating here and it is one of the few places I enjoy where the location is more important than the food quality. I am also guilty of hitting the coffee and cookie bar in this place which offers several tasty dessert treats. Worth a try - just don't expect too much. read more

Afterall, I thought I was going to pay Dodger-stadium prices, like a cup of water for $2.59....just for the cup, or a pizza slice for $9.95, and $1.75 for 3 or more additional pepperonis thrown in. NO! this place doesn't charge such ridiculous prices. So that's a very good thing. By the way, I'll put this tidbit as a quik tip, but I'll mention it again here: Beware--Kitchen closes @2pm!! As this place is tucked inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, most visitors to the area, jurors, etc. probably don't know it's there unless they are specifically visiting the cathedral. Too bad, because it's one of the best options for a pleasant, inexpensive, relatively healthy lunch in that area. The panini sandwiches are excellent, and the daily specials are usually very good (and typically come with salad or vegetables, a welcome alternative to the plethora of greasy fast food at the nearby LA Mall). The Mexican options are somewhat subpar, although the quesadillas are passable. Avoid the pizza. The Catholic Church in general and the LA Archdiocese in particular have given many people much to be angry about over the years, as evidenced by the regular protests that take place on the sidewalk just outside, and some of you may be hesitant to spend your money here. I recommend the following compromise: Go ahead and grab a sandwich here, enjoy it outside in the nicely landscaped courtyard, but, when you leave, instead of doing what comes naturally and ignoring the protesters, talk to them, if they look credible. Take a flyer. Ask what you can do. Your support is probably worth more than the $9 you just spent. read more

I ordered a burrito. Bad experience, but that doesn't go for all the foods that they sell. I was in downtown for jury duty. I ordered a chicken burrito. It came with 3 sides: sour cream, guac, and salsa. The "salsa" was just chopped up tomato, onion, and little fragments of jalapeno. The burrito was so liquidy that all the liquids had settled to the bottom making the tortilla and paper wrapper come apart. It was like a school cafeteria burrito, which is fine! No problem. My issue was that I bit into about an inch and a half long, broken piece of chicken breast wishbone. I've traveled to many different countries, I've eaten at some pretty ghetto places where I had to watch out what might be in my food. I just don't think this place should be one of those places. With that said, other foods on plates looked decent. I personally wouldn't order a burrito. read more

I think some folks are being a little too critical about this cafeteria. 3 stars means A-OK. The food was okay (pastrami sandwich was small, but surprisingly good). I do want to try the tostada salad next time. It's a bit overpriced, but heck it's downtown and some of the proceeds go to the church. For comparison, MOCA isn't exactly cheap. Yes, there's sometimes a wait, but it's a cafeteria! The outside seating is awesome. The plaza in front of the cathedral is huge and they have a nice little park with animal statues. This is a nice lunch spot in the peaceful Cathedral area across from the Civic Center. There is a nice assortment of salads. I like the quinoa and kale salad (with golden raisins and almonds) I have also had the arugala with sun dried tomatoes, but it was a bit over dressed for my taste and had a tad too much garlic in the dressing. The sandwiches are good. There is always a couple of pasta and pizza choices. The pizza slices are large. They also have a grill and serve burgers and chicken.
