I really really wanted to like this place. After a soso second experience, I came to Gale's a third time, hoping it will redeem itself. I arrived around 6:40 for my 6:30 reservation, and the hostess asked if I wanted to be seated first. I said yes. She started to seat me, but then doubled back and insisted I wait at the front until my friend arrived. They are pretty tight on space, she said. But I had a reservation.....okay then.. The place turned out to be surprisingly busy for a Tuesday night. I ordered the cheese stuffed zucchini flower and the shrimp & crab tortellini off the specials menu. The zucchini flower was just okay. It was fried and you couldn't really taste the flower, just fried cheese. Then came the tortellinis, which, sadly, were a major fail. Instead of making it with actual pasta, they seemed to have gotten lazy and bought those thin wonton skins from 99 Ranch to wrap the shrimp/crab filling. The result? I felt like I was eating at an asian restaurant. The tortellinis were not in the shape you'd expect them to be, and the fact that it was cheese-less didn't help either, since it made the filling taste that much more like what you'd get at a dumpling place. I think they would have been better off serving store bought/factory-made tortellini rather than attempting to make their own. WONTON SKINS! I really wanted to like this place, but the dish left me so dissatisfied that I'm crossing Gale's of my list for good. read more

The food and wine was fabulous. My family and I had such a lovely dinner. The waiter was very attentive and made excellent recommendations for my family. The only thing that needs improvement are the desserts. They were fabulous but they weren't decadent. I didn't taste the espresso in my Tiramisu and my sister's blackberry creme brulee was eggy. I don't think desserts should taste too much like eggs otherwise they are too gamey. I'll definitely return and try other items on the menu. read more

I was kind of torn, but I think they deserve a 3. The food was pretty good, but it didn't "wow" me for the prices paid for a dinner of four. My tortolloni (not a misspelling) was good quality, but kind of one note. My grandma enjoyed her birthday shrimp Caesar salad, but stated not enough shrimp, and to be fair, it looked kinda sparse. Our server was amazing, and brought my grandma free birthday desserts. Very thoughtful, and she was amazing in her customer service. In all honesty, a decent place with good food. I just think, that for the prices I paid, perhaps great customer service and relaxing ambiance is not enough to make up for good, but not great, Italian food. Great restaurant!! They had authentic Italian dishes. The orecchiette verdure was amazing with rapini and sun dried tomatoes, i added italian sausage to the plate and it was delicious. A coworker recommended with great enthusiasm that I try the meatball sandwich so I did as I was told. ordinarily, i view meatballs as a risky proposition for two reasons: 1) shared genealogy with meatloaf, a dish justly exiled to geriatric cafeterias and hospital cuisine; 2) cleanliness issues linked to their formation by human hands. bravo, ladies and gents. This sandwich was good enough to be memorable - amidst all the competition for my stomach space - I know that days and weeks from now, something will trigger a specific craving for this sandwich and this sandwich alone. most important (to me at least), is the quality of the meatballs. other meatball sandwiches produced an almost schizophrenic experience - ecstasy over the wonderful flavors and synergy of meat, sauce, cheese, and bun; agony over the tooth-wrenching shock of biting into some cook's fingernail or animal cartilage. In contrast, Gale's meatballs not only tasted better, but I could enjoy their taste better, given their unimpeachable quality. The mozzerela cheese was not ordinary pizza topping stuff, but could have held its own in a caprese salad. The bread was fresh baked and sesame-ed. And the birthday festivities continue! I had my mum treat me to Gale's last night for my birthday since she likes Italian food. I entered Gale's in high spirits. Parking was great (they have a large lot in the back they share with neighbouring businesses). We had a reservation so we were seated quickly. We got water right away. We got bread right away. Our server was really nice. And the specials sounded amazing. Then Gale's decided to rain on my parade. I wanted the ravioli de mare, which had crab, lobster, and shrimp. But they replaced it with brisket and mushrooms. I hate mushrooms. Ugh. Okay, then I want the tortellini stuffed with chicken, sundried tomatoes, and goat cheese. But they were completely out. Why dangle delicious food in front of my face if I can't have it?! *frustrated* So I got their Chicken Milanese (a lot of Yelpers seemed to like it) with salad and garlic mashed potatoes and my mum got their Lasagna Bolognese, which also comes with salad. The salad came. I'm not a fan. It was too.. plain. Then our entrees came. My mum's lasagna looked good. And it tasted good. My mum enjoyed it, yay. My chicken was huge. It tasted okay. Not bad by any means, but not wow. I did really like the garlic mashed potatoes though. I love potatoes and I love garlic and these were very creamy and delicious. Up to this point I had decided in my head that Gale's was going to get three stars on Yelp. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. I was actually feeling like it was more of a 2.5-er since I just didn't care much for the ambience (I felt it was more "crowded" than "cozy" and it was also pretty loud in there) and the food wasn't blowing me away. But then my mum brought it to our server's attention that we were there to celebrate my birthday. And she lit up and told me that I would get a complimentary dessert--and that I get to CHOOSE my dessert. That was awesome. Usually restaurants have already determined what the complimentary birthday dessert is (e.g. BJ's gives you their pazookie, Maria's Italian Kitchen gives you a cannoli) so this was quite the unexpected (but very pleasant!) surprise. Since creme brulee is my favourite dessert, I of course chose their blackberry crème brûlée. Our server brought it out with a lit candle. And it was in a heart-shaped dish! After taking pictures of and with it, I dug in. Delicious. And that is why Gale's is getting four stars from me. And why our server received a generous tip. Wanted to try something new with my parents, so we came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. The parking lot seemed pretty full and was worried about a wait, but we were seated right away, in the back, but had to walk through a hallway where the bathrooms were... which I thought was weird. We ordered the Clam Linguini, Gnocchi with Shrimp Pomodoro and Baby Artichokes, and a Rosemary Roasted Chicken Pizza. Came with bread, balsamic and oil. Clam Linguini - Very fresh, tasty. Giant clams, good portions Gnocchi with Shrimp Pomodoro and Baby Artichokes - Housemade gnocchi, hearty, filling Rosemary Roasted Chicken Pizza - Was just okay, nothing special. Bready and not much toppings. Didn't seem like a $20 pizza. Service is friendly and outstanding. Although I didn't like the pizza as much, I really liked the pasta dishes. Gale's has been around for as long as I can remember. So for our 9-month anniversary my husband and I finally decided to go give them a try. It was one of our favorite Italian meals ever! Service was fantastic, even though there was a long wait we were seated promptly and were given the option to sit on the patio to avoid the long wait (it was an excellent idea because it was much quieter on the patio). I also really love it when the manager makes a point to visit with each table to make sure everything is going perfectly. The food: Zucchini Flowers - stuffed with cheese and fried to perfection, these little pillows of awesomeness were my first experience with zucchini flowers and I have to say I am in love! Wine Poached Pears, Cheese, and Speck - my husband and I love speck, so this was a great dish, I loved how fragrant the poached pears were but found the cheese to be a little too strong for me. Seafood Soup - I thought my husband was going to cry tears of joy after trying this giant bowl of seafood goodness. The seafood is cooked perfectly and the tomato-based broth does not overpower the delicate fish, clams and mussels. Rotini Bolognese - the meat sauce was everything I wanted and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I also love that they serve you mini biscotti at the end of your meal. Came here yesterday for my boyfriend's aunt's birthday dinner. Our reservation was at 5PM so it was definitely quite empty so parking was a piece of cake. As we left around 7ish, the restaurant was packed! I can see why due to their tasty entrees. Their bread was fresh, and our server kept refilling them without us requesting which was awesome. The service throughout was great by the way. I got the Branzino dish which was hella good. The only downfall? They are not too generous with their portion, I was still somewhat hungry after I finished. Sort of had to order dessert to fill up my belly. (which is why I took away one star) Boyfriend ordered the clam pasta, decent but there were many broken shell pieces so that was annoying... My friend took me here for a late birthday dinner! And I just adore the place. Gale's is located a couple blocks from old town Pasadena. I love the location cause its not too far to go shopping before or after dinner but just enough that they have their own parking lot and we don't have to figure out which structure and how much time we have left. My friend and I end up ordering the soup of the day which was corn chowder, some sausage and potatoes dish, and rotini bolognese. First to our table was the green salad which comes with all the pasta dishes. The dressing on this salad was good. I could have eaten a big bowl of salad and been happy. Next was the corn chowder and sausage and potatoes dish...both full of flavors but was just okay for me. I wanted the carbs. Finally the best part of any meals! The meat sauce on the rotini bolognese was soo sooo soo good! They made the combo of the pasta and the meat sauce fit perfectly. Love the taste on this dish and definitely will be back to eat it again real soon! Service was also excellent. They even split the pasta dish for us cause they knew we were sharing. It's been awhile since i have written a review. We live in Los Feliz and i had come here before about 8 years ago. I remember the service wasn't great and i remembered it as being expensive. Flash to today. I get my hair done across the street, the whole family does. So we came in for dinner. Staff was seriously amazing every single one of them. Server suggested what i should order and i took her suggestion. Ravioli and a spicy red sauce. My son had meatballs and husband has salad. I was raised by Italians on the east coast. So i know good Italian Food Trust me. Anyone comparing this to a level above Olive Garden clearly hasn't been to Olive Garden. Food was INCREDIBLE. For the very first time, sat in a very small pet friendly patio. Enough room for 3 Adults and a small dog and another table with one other person, but room for one other couple. Out near noisy street with lots of traffic but with good wine, good food, and good company.... A chi importa! Who cares! The linguini with clams in its shells....molto delizioso! The beet salad ... meraviglioso! The wine... superbo! Great service considering in what appears to be the hinterland . One of the better Italian restaurants in the area. Our first visit was with our two teenage kids and they were, picky teenagers, both impressed with the quality of the portions and the food. Our second visit was with friends and once again Gale's did not disappoint. Their entire staff is always friendly, courteous, and constantly ensuring we were happy. More like a 3.5. Have lived in Pasadena for 6 years and finally made it to Gale's. Sunday night at 6 pm, wasn't too busy. What cost 0.5 pt was the waitress, she was on the slow side since it was not as busy as it was at 7:30 when we left. About 7-8 minutes to get a greeting and drink request. Food was good, the rest of the service was fine as the food runner got our food out still very hot. I ordered the Chicken Milanese and friend had the roasted veg pasta. I love the simplicity of the Milanese, with fresh squeezes of the lemon as you go. Huge portion of chicken - couldn't finish it. The roasted potatoes I ordered with it were excellent, very savory and just enough firmness. The pasta was devoured by my friend so I am guessing it was tasty. There were several specials so those only looking at the online menu, don't be disappointed. There were probably at least 6 starters and entrees on a Sunday special page. None of them screamed out to me since I was looking to try the Milanese - the simple dishes are usually a good test to try out a new place (in my book anyway!). I am impressed by the food. Yelp did well when it came to looking for a spot for my 2 friends and I to grab dinner and catch up. After reading all the pros and cons of the reviews, we went WITH RESERVATIONS. It was a busy night on Weds. Having resv made, we didn't have to wait. But do know that your entire party must be there to get seated. We get seated towards the back right side of the restaurant where there is a back door. I wouldn't even have noticed there was a back door, if this man didn't come in and out of it. We figured he worked there after doing it the second round. Unpleasant! I told my friends that I felt very rushed when it came to ordering and eating. First, we had to ask twice to get vinegar and a straw. Secondly, while just observing everything, the "bust-man" "attendants" "server-asstistant" were moving so fast, cleaning, clearing tables, getting stuff for people, bringing food to the table. The server knocked a spoon off the table seconds after putting it down for the lady at the next table. If it wasn't for her quick reaction in catching it, it would have fallen, then wait to ask for another. Even when we were half way done with our food, the attendant comes swooping in to ask if he can clear our plates. We weren't even done. It just felt like they were trying to get everyone in and out as quickly as possible. I understand they want to work fast to get every party seated in a timely manner, but don't make it so obvious! Clam Linguini: plenty of clams and doesn't have that seafood taste. Herb Roasted Chicken: Juicy and tender white meat. Delish! Garlic mash, flavorful. We were in the area and decided to grab some takeout. The restaurant is still allowing outdoor dining and there was a good amount of people dining outside, which was a little surprising to see since LA County has banned all outdoor dining currently (Pasadena has its own health department that does not follow LA County guidelines). I forgot to take any photos of the food or the setup, but they have a big white tent as well as a few tables outside of the tent in the parking lot. Three or four tables right outside of the front entrance as well. They were very busy with a lot of foot traffic and a lot of curbside pickups. As soon as we got to the restaurant my husband called the restaurant to let them know we were there. When you park temporarily on the side, a few of the employees who are wearing face masks and face shields will swing by your car to ask you for your name so they can locate your order. You can prepay or pay onsite, and they will come to your car and take your credit card from you to process. Probably a good idea to pay over the phone during this time to reduce close contact, but our reception was poor and it was hard to hear/relay information over the phone. Wonder if they have a mobile credit card processing device they can bring out to the cars~might be easier. We paid and then waited about 10 minutes for our food. We ordered the rotini bolognese, clams linguini, and arugula salad. The curbside option is great, and recommend it minus the lack of curbside parking at the front. The portions are huge and were still warm when we got home 30 minutes later. My husband and I ate comfortably and had enough leftovers to pack for lunch for two people. The rotini was delicious and packed with a lot of flavor and meat and the linguini was simple and light if pasta can be described as light. The clams to pasta ratio in the linguini favors clams, which is beneficial if you want to decrease your carb intake. The arugula salad was decent and had arugula, mushrooms, sheets of cheese, and sliced tomatoes, but probably a pass if you're looking for a delicious filling salad as a main entree. They also packed bread and two pieces of biscotti--the bread was delicious as was the biscotti. My husband and I thought everything would have tasted even better in person (and with a glass of wine), but outdoor dining is still a little scary right now. My husband liked the pasta dishes better than pasta sisters, which is a bold claim. I would say... different than pasta sisters, the pasta itself doesn't taste homemade, homegrown, home rolled and cut, but I do think it travels better than pasta sisters. We paid about $59 for three dishes, which I thought was a bit pricy, until I realized how big the portions were. I think still a tad bit pricey, but at least big hearty portions. We would come back again if we are in the area and excited to try dining onsite once COVID is controlled. For now, we will support through takeout. read more

Our waiter seated us right away and quickly brought over some sourdough bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Venue: very casual, wooden floors and tables, bright lighting and great for brunch, great for groups no larger than 10 people. Food: My friends and I ordered two pasta dishes and a medium sized pizza. Fettuccini Carbonara: very tasty and creamy but don't forget to ask for more parmesan cheese. This is my favorite out of everything Pasta Al Forno: Very heavy and meaty. I'd recommend this dish for those who love meat sauce. Rosemary Roasted Chicken: The medium sized pizza was huge! I came with a group of 4 girls and we all ate 2 slices. Very delicious and I love the crust. This dish is also very filling. Price: The price here ranges from $12-$30 depending on what you order. Majority of the pasta dishes are no more than $18 and the pizza ranges up to $20ish. I wouldn't say this place is pricey. It's about the same price as cheesecake factory. Really great place. I actually went with a someone who chose the location. This was the first time for both of us, but we left pretty satisfied with our choice. Gale's is fairly small and gets really busy, at least on Saturdays. We arrive at around 8pm - reservations were at 8:15pm. There was still a 30 minute wait, which turned out to be much longer as others who had reservations where waiting also. Unlike them, we could care less, it gave us time to sit and chat w/o distractions. ;-) Once seated the services was really great - I can never seem to make a final decision, but our waiter helped me out with my choice which in the end I was totally happy with. Overall, good wine, good food, friendly service, but poor waiting time. Will go back not on a Saturday, of course. read more

We got to the restaurant around 9:30pm and it was still pretty busy. The hostess asked if we had a reservation, which we didn't. There were several empty tables in the restaurant so it wasn't a problem, but the hostess ended up sticking us in the very far corner. The freakin best! We forgot to make a dinner reservation and this place happened to be able to squeeze us in. The pasta was amazing. We had the mussels to start, and the seafood tasted so fresh. I ordered the mushroom ravioli which came out quickly after and it hit the spot. Keep in mind this is a very heavy meal, but then again, all Italian cuisine is carb heavy! The staff were very friendly and made sure we were satisfied with the outcome. They also included complimentary tiramisu which was so kind of them! We come here as often as our bank account allows, however tonight's experience may have us looking for a new Italian restaurant. Upon arrival at 5:45 pm the hostess tells me she can't possibly seat us without a reservation- rudely- then her supervisor clearly says "we don't have a reservation until 7 - seat them." She takes us to a table, throws down some menus and says you need to be finished by 7, we have a reservation. We proceed to order. Food takes forever- we eat- delicious as always. Service was slow and bus boys were circling our table waiting to swoop in and take our plates before we were done. Took forever to get the bill for this most precious table they were waiting for. Hope the important guests who same after us were worth it because we won't be returning in a hurry Rudeness lost loyal customers who come here often as we live down the street 3* for the quality of the food -2* for rude hostess who made us feel that our business was worthless UPDATE: I was contacted by gales and I appreciate them taking the time to retain us as customers. Last night was such a great time with my family and friends!! Our waiter was super helpful and accommodating to our needs. He let us sample couple wines before we made our selection. We started off with the bruschetta. Then we decided to share a couple dishes between the 5 of us. We go the house salad, the fettuccine carbonara which was delicious !! The penne formaggio which was recommended to us by the waiter. The Tuscan steak which they spilt for us it was super tasty with the mashed potatoes mmmmm just writing about it makes me want to go back for more ! We also got an Italian meats pizza which was a big portion and we also had a bottle of cab which was pretty good considering I haven't graduated from sweet sparking wines lol. Gales is great. Food is excellent, menu keeps regular hits, but also changes daily specials and such. Lately, I've needed to order in more than usual, and Gale's has been wonderful. You can order online or on the phone, and have options to pick up or have delivered. Food arrives quickly and in perfect condition - it's been a real lifesaver for me. Last night, the highlight for me was a very, very tasty tomato fennel soup. I was sorry that I didn't order more but, if it's on today's menu, I may indulge and order dinner again tonight. The beet salad was ample, enough to have some for lunch today. I haven't had her pasta or pizza lately because of diet restrictions (a tough time for an Italian, LOL), but my past experiences have always been great. I have a friend who comes from Orange County for date nights with his wife (no doubt one reason they've been together for over 50 years ;-) -- he never leaves without having a Gale's pizza. And here's a big plus for many folks: I'm in walking distance, but there is plenty of parking in their lot and great street parking. Since the pandemic shutdown in March, I've had takeout three times from Gale's, each better than the last. You can order online, and the curbside pick up is effortless. Salads are delicious (especially the special crab avocado) along with everything else, including the steak, eggplant parm. chicken piccatta and even a simple dish like angel hair pasta with tomato sauce. Dinner orders come with bread and biscotti. It was great seeing so many people enjoying their outdoor tent when I picked up my dinner tonight (it was a little too toasty outside for my husband and I).
