Will not be returning. The entire restaurant was so loud and the other patrons were loudly swearing. The food felt like a threat to my well being, the steak was so heavily seasoned it burned as it was eaten, the burger and fries were cold, and the fish was so bad in both taste and smell it had to be taken away. The waiter was very nice and did his best to fix the disaster that was everything around us. Was looking forward to this but was very disappointed. Arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and was told we must wait until exactly 6:15 pm. To be seated. Ok, fine, just a way to get you to buy a drink at the bar... We then are seated in a both across from the bar. (in a booth that had been open the entire time we were waiting) Not happy at all- very loud and the patrons at the bar were dropping F- bombs left and right. Not the fine dining experience I envisioned... the bartender did come to our table ( after about 90 minutes saying Let me know if they are too loud". It told her that ship had already sailed... the drink I had at the bar was ok as was our appetizer. Service was extremely slow. Husband had steak and fries... they were just ok and steak was slightly undercooked. My 3 scallops were cover with an inedible mixture of tomato/ vegetables. The side dish of chorizo/potatoes/ onion was cold, greasy and not spicy at all. Chorizo should be tangy and vinegary- this was very bland. For our troubles, we were given a free dessert of bread pudding. It was very tasty! Marketing themselves as a high end restaurant is misleading. While the decor seemed nice (never saw main dining room) the emphasis needs to be on service and top notch food. Would I go back? Maybe to try lunch but never for the overpriced dinner experience. Since reopening I've been three times for dinner. Overall the remodel is gorgeous. I love the vibe inside and the details with the decor are gorgeous. On our first visit we were seated upstairs. The environment was quiet enough to enjoy a conversation which I cannot say when you are seated downstairs. Our waitress was less than great. She was nice but clearly not we'll seasoned and when she gave us the fish special of the day only told us the name of the fish, not how it was prepared or what it came with. Also asked about two sushi dishes and her reply was "that's sushi!" Now I know it takes time to learn the ropes of the service industry but if you want to lean into the "high end steakhouse" persona I expect much better service. Now on that visit our food was really good. I had the seafood pasta and husband had the pork chop. Both of which were cooked perfectly and a good amount of food! We also had the egg roll and salmon sushi appetizers. Egg roll was not crispy at all but the filling was amazing. Slaw on the side was bland but the crunch was nice. Sushi was fresh and flavorful. Simple but done well. Drink service was slow and dinner service was too. On my second visit we were seated in a booth downstairs. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, drastic change from the first visit We tried the shrimp appetizer. Super flavorful and well cooked shrimp but again, same bland slaw. My friend had the burger and I had one of the fish dishes. We both enjoyed our food but again, took over an hour for the entree to arrive. Drinks were good and overall a better experience in service. But waiting an hour from when you order for food is a bit frustrating. On my most recent visit we were seated at the bar. Our bartender/waitress was great! Friendly and attentive. We had the bruschetta which was rich and delightful. Good portion and very flavorful. Husband had a fish dish and I had the burger. Both were delicious but I wish I was asked about the cook on my burger. For that price I should get to choose the cook. It was really good but over cooked for my taste. But again, over an hour for our entrees. Again drinks were good and drink service was fast but we were at the bar! Overall we really like the new spot! Food quality has overall been really good. Except for the slaw....needs flavor and shouldn't be the same on every dish. Seems like an afterthought. Oh, and I forgot about the bread! That bread is insane! Cocktails have been well made and a good pour. Wine list is so so. Wish there was more variety. Just fix the dinner service and we'll keep coming back. It should not take over an hour to get your entree. And each visit we were given a "we're really busy upstairs" excuse which seems like a line at this point. Maybe adjust the volume of reservations if staffing is part of the issue. Just don't be in a hurry when you come and if you're hungry get an app to hold you over till your dinner arrives! read more

Usually, I try to avoid burgers, because they're so common. Everywhere I go, burgers. But, let me assure you, these burgers are uncommonly good. Perhaps the best I've ever had. My wife and I split the Gallagher's signature burger and the fire burger, and they were ridiculously good. Fresh, flavorful, etc. We forced ourselves to eat them, despite their size, because we didn't want to miss out on even a single bite. On top of that, service was really good. Multiple members of the wait staff showed kindness to our little kids, even as they walked around the restaurant. Kudos for being so family friendly. Hubby and I stopped in here for dinner before a play at the Monroe Actors Stage Company. I had the Cucumber Collins which was OH, so good! The waiter told us that the special for that evening was a grilled trout, so we chose it. There was butter, and capers, and sun dried tomatoes involved, all of which came together quite nicely. Our sides were broccoli and mushrooms and a Caesar salad. The pieces of broccoli were like TREES and the mushrooms were fantastic! It was a an unusual combination that really worked well, withOUT making the dish unhealthy! The salad was nummy. The service was good. The building is really neat. This was really good. I actually ate gizzards....and I liked them... The hubster likes such things and I watch from a distance. If you try them you will be converted. I had the spicy chicken sandwich. It was really good and will feed me two meals. The chips were really good. They were better than a local fav in NW DC that has long line and sells out daily. If these were in the city they would be busy. Hubster had chicken fingers and liked them. We recommend not getting two fried items the same meal. Solid bar food in an old restored warehouse. Also, the town of Waterloo, IL was very cute and had tons of Christmas lights, brewery/bars, and (oddly) phone booths around. I went with a friend on a Friday night around 6:30 PM and it was packed! We were told that we would have to wait an hour to be seated, so we decided to take a short walk around the block and then wait for a seat at the bar instead. After we found seats at the bar we each ordered a beer and split the fried chicken and classic burger. The highlight was definitely the fries that came with the fried chicken. I found out that I was sitting next to the owner, and we had some great conversations. He was incredibly friendly, but said he didn't care about yelp or my review :(. read more

Walking into Gallagher's Restaurant this Sunday, I see my fellow Yelper and gracious organizer of this evening's dinner, Steven, waiting at the bar. We're here for Gallagher's "Famous Fried Chicken" Sunday supper. After ordering a drink I look around in awe of the gorgeous restoration job that has been made on this 1870s building in downtown Waterloo. From the hardwood floors to the chandeliers and traditional Southern-style wallpaper adorning the rooms, you can tell a lot of love has been put into this restaurant. When everyone in our dining party arrived we were taken to an elevator to go to the second floor. There is a beautiful wooden staircase to get to the second floor as well, but it's nice to know for anyone with disabilities or injuries that an elevator is available. Once we were all seated our friendly server, Alex, arrived and took drink orders and asked us if we knew about Gallagher's "Famous Fried Chicken Sundays." She explained that this is the only meal available on Sundays, but it is all-you-can-eat fried chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn custard, and green beans. All this for $12.99! The home-style biscuits arrived first to the table. They were warm, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits that made you want to reach back in the basket for more. And since it's all-you-can-eat, go ahead and eat as many as you please. A bit later the main course arrived piping hot and served family style. Large plates full of fried chicken, the skins still steaming with heat. A huge bowl of real whipped mashed potatoes piled high. Southern-style green beans with smoked ham cubes. A savory corn custard with a bit of a kick. It all smelled incredible. And it tasted pretty darned good too. The fried chicken had a thin, crispy outside with tender, juicy and flavorful meat on the inside. I can see why it's famous fried chicken. I'll be honest and say it's not the best fried chicken in the St. Louis area I've had, but it's pretty close. The mashed potatoes were incredible! Real whipped potatoes paired with a thick, white gravy seasoned with the perfect amount of black pepper. It was amazing. After stuffing ourselves silly, our waitress Alex arrived to the table with plates of dessert. It's a moist chocolate cake that has been soaked in chocolate syrup, topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with chunks of crushed Heath bar. A food coma ensued. We had the pleasure of having Sunday Menu lunch here this past weekend. We had the family style all you can eat fried chicken with 3 sides and since I'm cows milk dairy free they accommodated that by giving me just the chicken and adding the coleslaw. We were on the early lunch time and since it was so cold we asked for hot tea. Not sure this is an item they usually serve but they brought us two hot teas with my favorite, Constant Comment tea. Then came the biscuits and the food. The best darn chicken we've had in quite some time!! Along with that came mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans, and a corn side. My husband enjoyed these sides and I thoroughly enjoyed the coleslaw. When it came time for a bit more chicken they kindly asked us what cuts we would like extra of. It was hard to choose since every piece was outstanding! The breast was juicy and the legs and thighs. Chefs kiss. We sat upstairs and it was so cute up there and frankly the whole restaurant is very tasteful. Next time I want to eat in the bar area. Mason was our server and he was just delightful! I would have given this place 3 stars due to the service but the food and drinks made a difference. First time coming to this place, the service wasn't that great when we first arrived. We had 2 tables waiting outside that seemed almost forever before someone finally coming outside to give us menus. I've heard great things about Gallagher's for years, so for the celebration of my friends 29th Anniversary of their 29th birthday, we decided to do a road trip to Waterloo. It took us only a half hour from downtown STL and it is so worth the drive. It was less time then driving out to west county. Sunday is Family Style Chicken Dinner for $12.95. Family Style is the polite way of saying, "It is all you can eat". Our table was covered with a platter of crispy & juicy fried chicken, a bowl of fresh green beans with ham, another bowl of corn custard and yet another bowl of mashed potatoes and finally a gravy boat of milk gravy. Then when you are done stuffing yourself with all these home cooked delights, they offer you a piece of Susie's Sheet Cake for dessert. The flavor changes on the regular, so our flavor was Blueberry Lemon. Fried Chicken: Large pieces, crispy crust & juicy inside, not spicy or overly salty - just perfectly seasoned. Green Beans: Simply seasoned with ham, salt and pepper Corn Custard: Unique in its' own way - everyone loved it once they tried it. Mashed Potatoes - Whipped heavenly, with a very lumps to show it truly is homemade. Milk Gravy - Life doesn't get any better then gravy made from fried chicken drippings. Sheet cake: The sweetness and tartness of blueberries and lemon made a great finale. The whiskey and craft beer menus will blow you away. You'll never expect the variety they offer from a small town restaurant. The birthday honoree loved their Whiskey Sour and my Manhattan had good flavor, but a tad too much vermouth for me. Ruined evening. One star because of a great Old Fashioned from the bar, ZERO for management. Made reservations weeks ago for a nice birthday dinner with my wife. After driving more than an hour from St. Charles County, and waiting a short while, we were taken to our table, which wasn't the booth as I reserved, but instead a table right next to a very loud party of 10. We were troopers and tried to make the best of it but it was so loud we couldn't even have a conversation. Every other table in the room we were sitting in was EMPTY, so when I asked if we could move to an empty booth, like I had reserved, or another table, our waitress checked and we were told no, we had to sit there. Wait what, who does that? We can't move to a quieter table when the rest of the room was empty?Sorry, the hostess said no. Now maybe I should have talked to the manager, but by this time the fun buzz of a night out with my wife was killed. We decided to leave and told our waitress who said she was sorry and has no idea why they wouldn't let us move to another table. We were so looking forward to a nice evening at Gallagher's, but they made sure it wasn't to be. We ended up driving to The Hill and are waiting 90 minutes because it's Friday night and we don't have reservations, but it'll be worth the wait and we'll be treated like valued customers. I'd like to give 1 star but giving 2 because the interior decor was nice and although we could not get served food, the bartender (male with a raspy voice) was friendly. We arrive and sit at the bar since it's only 2 of us. We are told we cannot order dinner at the bar, only appetizers, and will have to put our names in for a table. No big deal, we put our names in with the hostess. Order drinks and wait. Within 5 minutes, the people sitting across from us at the bar receive their dinner entrees. Watch 2 more groups come in, sit at the bar, get menus and order dinner. We felt like we were getting punked. We're there approximately 30 minutes and have received only one of our two appetizers. Finally the hostess comes and says our table is ready. We inform her we're still waiting on a second appetizer and can we bring it to our table, she says no we need to wait. Wait another 10 minutes, watch more people at the bar get served their dinner entree, and finally ask the bartender to cancel our second appetizer and leave. Everyone else got served dinner at the bar except for us. The bartender was very nice and took the second appetizer off of our bill. That being said, it seemed to be mostly locals and we were in from out of town. Shouldn't be surprised for a small town. The appetizer we did have was good and the craft cocktails tasted excellent. But will never come back with such odd treatment. If you can't serve dinner at the bar, I understand, but to watch 3 other groups (again, probably locals) come in and order was appalling. read more

Went for Sunday all you can eat chicken dinner. Arrived a little early, it's a bit of a drive for us and the weather was stormy. We got there 20 minutes early. We stood at reservation stand for 5 minutes before the bartender asked what we wanted and went and got the host. She says we have to wait to be seated until 5. Then she left the check in stand and everyone who came in after we did also had to wait to be welcomed. I noticed the floors throughout the place were not clean. When we got to our table, there was a dead ant on my husband's plate. When the food came out, it was average. Our chicken was a bit on the dark side as if it spent a tad too long in the fryer. But the chicken meat was hot and tasted fine. The sides were just okay. The corn dish had the most flavor. Not as good as the chicken dinner before the renovation. The reno looks nice. While this used to be one of my favorite restaurants, I don't plan to come back for the chicken dinner. read more

Literally every single single item I've had here has been top notch and prepared to perfection! WARNING: They only thing they serve on Sunday is their fried chicken; which is served family style. DRINK: Wow! What a great bar! I'd come here just to have a few drinks and hangout! They have a wide selection of beers on tap. They do a great job of frequently rotating different brands and types of beers. They must keep stellar care of their keg lines because every single beer I've ever had on tap here has been delicious. Wide selection of bourbon for all of you bourbon lovers out there. AMBIANCE: Beautiful setting. The restaurant is housed in a renovated building from the 1800's. It is a 3 story building with exposed brick on most of the walls, with a beautiful balcony overlooking the front entrance and the impressive main bar is original from the building. KIDS: The restaurant is causal fine dining. We came here for two meals and enjoyed both of them. First lunch....my boyfriend ordered the chicken and soup while my Mom and I decided to have burgers. Our burgers were good but the boyfriend out ordered us with his fried chicken. The tomato soup was amazing as well. Then came Sunday and I really wanted that soup. Off to the restaurant we went. Upon arriving, we were informed that it was all you can eat chicken with all the fixings day....no menu....served family style. While I was disappointed in not being able to indulge in the soup...the fried chicken could not have been better. We had to go up tot he second floor for seating as Sunday is a popular day because of the all you can eat chicken. Don't worry if you have trouble navigating stairs....there is an elevator. We were seated and within five minutes had our drinks, chicken and sides at our table. We were checked on frequently to make sure there was not anything that we wanted...you can even request specific pieces of chicken if you have eaten all the ones they have given! Here is the kicker...when you are done...you can take what is on your table home with you! Nope not kidding! How can you beat that for $20 a person? You simply can't. Gallagher's Restaurant recently got my attention for two reasons, their fried chicken and burgers both of which were highly rated and even earned them places on top 10 lists for best in the Saint Louis area. So I recently jumped at the opportunity to visit Gallagher's Restaurant when I learned that some friends were planning on gathering at a brewery just around the corner. I arrived early on the Sunday before Memorial Day to discover that Sunday the only item on the menu is their Family Style Chicken Dinner. The Sunday Family Style Chicken Dinner is a real steal too as it is all you can eat for only $12.95. The dinner consisted of their famous fried chicken, homemade biscuits, corn custard, mashed potatoes, & green beans. However if that wasn't enough the meal is finished off with a delicious slice of their complimentary dessert. The chicken itself was great, perfectly juicy yet crispy and perfectly seasoned just like Grandma used to make. The sides were top notch too, my favorite was the mashed potatoes, however the creamy corn custard was s surprise hit. If for some reason you can't make it in on a Sunday don't worry, Gallagher's serves up their famous fried chicken every other day they are open. While I didn't get to try a burger, I can say that I will be back to give it a try as the food was delicious! Service here was just as good, our waitress made sure to keep tabs on our plates without being overly pushy. She inquired as to what pieces of chicken we preferred rather than bringing out random pieces, this was a nice touch. Gallagher's is located in an old historic building, in old downtown Waterloo. Inside you will immediately notice a large bar and separate dining room, however there is also seating upstairs. Seating consisted of several large booths and tables scattered around. The atmosphere here is casual and family friendly too, making it a perfect place to meet up with either family of friends over a quality meal. While Gallagher's seems like it might be far away for most, its only about a 30 minute drive from downtown and well worth the drive. read more

Went for the Sunday all-you-can eat chicken with family-style sides. This is ridiculously cheap. Very nice, friendly young staff. A neat bldg that I think dates from the late 1800s, originally built as a bank. There's an elevator to the 2nd floor (and to the 3rd floor for private parties). There are also stairs to the 2nd floor, but they are fairly steep. We were just directed straight to the elevator. I guess I looked decrepit. Excellent fried chicken. They must brine it or something, because it is so moist but also packed with flavor even for the white meat. And the breading is a thinner, well-seasoned variety. It comes out almost extremely hot. Sides are brought sized in proportion to the number of people at your table, but still so large that we heard people gasping as they were brought. It was especially humorous to see the table of six's portion sizes. Biscuits are flaky and fresh (actually everything was right out of the oven/stove/fryer fresh). Mashed potatoes were substantial, not runny, but not thick or dry. And I liked how there was potato skin within. The milk gravy was well seasoned, thick, and delicious. Corn casserole was a great, unexpected side - which also does just fine under a stream of that gravy. Green beans were pretty standard. I like mine a little more seasoned, but still not bad. If any dishes get close to empty, they encourage you to just ask for another serving, And you need to for the chicken. There's plenty on that first plate, but it's so good that you have to make yourself uncomfortably full with it. When you are done stuffing your pie hole, then the server will ask you if you saved room for some complimentary dessert. Well of course you did. You don't get a choice, but we were each brought a dense chocolate cake with a whipped cream topping and crushed toffee sprinkled on top. A perfect ending. As we watched others getting their desserts, it seemed every table was getting a different type of cake. Interesting! And here's a kick - we still had a decent amount of food in our serving dishes, including a couple pieces of chicken. The server brought us to go boxes to bring home the leftovers. What all-you-can-eat meals let you do that? Shoot, if I had known, I'd have gotten a full plate of that chicken before I said i was done. Well not really, but I would have been tempted. Oh, and in case you don't come out overstuffed from all that excellent chicken and the sides, there's a basket of mini Kit Kats in the hallway just waiting for you to polish one off. read more

Gallagher!! So I have a coworker from Waterloo who talked about this place all the time. After years of hearing about it, I finally made the journey to Waterloo. The restaurant is located in a cute downtown area. The inside is rustic chic. Overall the food was good, but not amazing. I am sure it is the best chicken in Waterloo and southern IL, but not in the world. If I ever found myself back in Waterloo then I wouldn't mind giving this place another try. read more
