Finally made it to Gallardos, and wow, my favorite place this year so far. We were there on a Saturday, and apparently they do lamb birria only on weekends. Easy sell with all the happy families around us tearing into quesabirria taccos! Lamb birria plate was perfect, lots of smoky juicy meat falling off small bones, perfect for wrapping in a warm tortilla and dunking in the consomé (definitely take a sip of this on its own). The aguas frescas of the day were jamaica (hibiscus) and cucumber. Warm day, so perfect for two big glasses of the latter, and not too sweet, just a floral thirst quencher. We also got a combo plate with an enchilada and taco, both with chicken. There's a demi-lake of excellent cheesy pinto refried beans, just a lot of food! I'm coming back for that birria, but the service is also warm and makes clear what a fixture they are in the neighborhood, many people being greeted as regulars. Gallardos is a smaller restaurant that makes efficient use of their space. Their outside area gives a nice reprieve from the wind, too. I have gotten takeout from Gallardos a number of times, and often get a Barbacoa Super Burrito, but I hadn't had the Chorizo before, and I hadn't gotten one to eat there. I do wish I'd known ahead of time that when you eat there, they put the guacamole and sour cream on top of the burrito instead of inside it. The meat, rice, and beans tasted dry inside the burrito with everything else outside the burrito. The chorizo also had no spice to it. I was hoping for at least a little bit, but it was very mild and not super flavorful. I feel like I have had ups and downs on meals there; the consistency isn't great. So I was taken here by a coworker ,, never even heard of the place prior . The Good , Food was excellent, everything was fresh , salsa was hot but had a good flavor , the burrito was packed with meat . I love this place I've been coming here since I was a kid. I finally went back to this place today. I sat outside in their patio area. I mainly came for their Birria since it's made the most traditional to the Birria in Mexico. They did not disappoint. It comes with consomé (broth) , onions cilantro and lime, and homemade tortillas. It honestly sucks that I'm writing this review, because I've been to this restaurant multiple times and have always had a great experience before today. Our server was a older lady with dyed blonde hair. Her customer service was iffy from the jump and only got worse. We ordered chilaquiles and added chicken to them. The only thing she asked is was if we wanted grilled or shredded chicken to which we replied grilled. A few minutes later we realized she didn't ask us what sauce we wanted it in red or green? So we flagged her down to ask her and she said they always come in red sauce unless we remember to ask for green, so we asked if we could get them in green sauce. She said well let me look if they haven't put the sauce on them yet otherwise they are going to be in red sauce. First red flag there. We managed to catch them on time so we could actually get them in the sauce we wanted otherwise according to our server you get what you get basically. Our food came out and was not at all what we were expecting. The last time we were there and my partner ordered this dish it had two large pieces of thinly sliced grilled chicken atop of the chilaquiles. This time the dish was basically chilaquiles with a side of chicken fajitas. I wanted to look past it, but just couldn't. So I flagged the lady down and asked her about it. Her response was that the kitchen cuts the chicken differently so sometimes it'll be actual grilled chicken and sometimes it'll be basically chicken fajitas. That doesn't even make any sense. So you order your food and it's a coin toss on how your chicken is going to come out? They are two completely different results! I also pointed out that I didn't realize that the chilaquiles came with shredded white cheese. Traditional Mexican chilaquiles come with queso fresco or cotija crumbles over top. She was like yeah, they always come with this type of cheese. I say all of this to say her customer service was severely lacking. She was not trying to be accommodating at all. Like this is what it is and that's that. So I told her I wasn't interested in eating the food and she asked if I wanted her to box it up. Second red flag. I told her no, I don't want the food and she said okay. She asked if I wanted them to make anything else, but after the interaction with her I was completely put off from having anything there, so I said no. At this point my partner asked for a box for his meal to which he almost didn't box up the chicken, because neither of us wanted fajitas and asked for the check. When she brought the check out, she hadn't taken my dish off of the bill. My partner had to go up to the register and ask her about it and she really stood their and argued about it then reluctantly took my dish off the bill and said that they wouldn't be doing that again as if after all of that we'd want to return there. All in all I'm not saying not to go to this restaurant because they do have good food if you can get what you actually ordered, just be weary of that server. read more

First time there today. Easily one of the best Mexican meals I have had in 29 years in SF and ever. The reason? Autentico. Everything they do is fresh and packed with flavor. I asked what was popular and she said carnitas so I went with that. It came out quickly. I was surprised upon my initial inspection of the dish how it didn't appear to be greasy or fatty which most carnitas are. That assessment stood up; I did not get one mouthful of fat the entire meal, which I am very particular about for some reason (a little is ok but a mouthful is disgusting). It is all trimmed from the pork here and it's seasoned and cooked to perfection. Before that I enjoyed my chips and salsa. I asked if they have salsa verde before I tried the house roja. After tasting the house salsa I knew I'd be content with that. Red salsa is usually bland and overly watery. Not this one. I cannot believe the heat level on this - it's mild habanero hot. I loved it but can't believe the masses can enjoy it at that heat level. With my carnitas came a bowl of the salsa verde stew. She must have thought that's what I meant but I was thrilled to have it. The flavor profile of that green chili is perfect. The bitterness of the tomatillos marries into the saltiness of the pork perfectly. I scooped spoonfulls of that over my carnitas in my self made tacos I was making with the fresh tortillas and let me tell you - that's about as good as it gets, especially with the fresh sliced jalapenos, cilantros and onion. The owner Juan stopped by which a huge smile and welcomed me, chatted me up for a bit and wanted to know if I liked it. Such a nice touch. I can see why this would be a family and fan favorite in the Mission. It's solidly on my list of top places now and I am looking forward to my next visit. Did I mention the menu is huge? Huge! I rarely leave bad reviews, but this one needs to be a warning for future customers. I came here with my family on a Saturday night. It wasn't busy at all--only two groups were dining--yet our waitress was rude from the start. It was freezing outside, and she insisted on seating us at the table right next to the open door. When I asked to move to one of the many empty tables inside, she refused and said she would "keep the door closed," which didn't happen. After about 10 minutes, another waitress finally let us move. Service was terrible. She took our order, dropped the food, and disappeared until I finally had to flag her down for the check. Then she told us it was cash only, even though none of us had cash or debit cards. A customer before us was allowed to pay via Zelle, but she initially refused when I asked. Only after I questioned it did she say, "Fine, just this once," and then oddly asked me to show proof of payment when we left--even though she never asked the previous customer to do the same. The Zelle payment went directly to the owner, who was seated next to us, and he had to confirm that I paid. He was polite to us. I've never felt so unwanted at a restaurant. I was in town visiting home for the holidays, and this experience was super disappointing for me and my family.
