Gallegos, you look a little bit dodgy from the outside, but you hold secret food treasure in your guts. This is a tiny joint. There are about four booths lined up in a narrow little hallway of a dining room. You order from the cashier at the counter and it's cash only, so come prepared. The kitchen is pretty open and as I ordered I was able to actually watch my tortilla chips be fried fresh, dumped into a little red basket, and handed to me. Now, I am a chilaquiles freak and I am almost always disappointed when I order them out, so I wasn't that brave, but my BF was. They came out perfect with two over easy eggs on top. I had a bite, they were heaven. When BF came up for air, it was to rave about how they were almost like the chilaquiles his mom makes and the most authentic he's had out in San Diego. I ordered chorizo and eggs with beans, potatoes, peppers, and piping hot corn tortillas. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and everything had just the right amount of seasoning. Like a previous reviewer, I also happened upon Gallego's per the advice of a friend who works in the neighborhood. Gallego's didn't disappoint: my wet burrito was stuffed to the max with freshly cooked delicious carne asada and smothered in tangy enchilada sauce. I couldn't even finish it! The digs are hole-in-the-wall-esque, but the service was friendly. Seemed like a steady line at the register for to-go orders, so it's probably a neighborhood fave. Not a lot of options on the salsa - green or red - and there are only five or six tables. Definitely good, cheap eats. Would go back next time I'm in the area. read more

Since my last review, I must ding Gallegos a star. The food went up in price, the quality fell of a bit with a new recipe. However, the place is slightly nicer than it previously was. Service is still courteous and the value is well worth it. I would like to see them stop charging extra for card purchase (illegal by the way) but other than that, still one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I still highly recommend going! read more

I've been to this place multiple times and it was pretty good until today. I always always order carne asada fries no pico, pico is disgusting in my opinion always makes everything soggy and I actually get sick from it. I waited 20 minutes for my order and that was fine bc I saw they were busy. I get my order and it has PICO!!!! My boyfriend takes the order back and she questions him if he really asked for none because they're busy so can they just take it off. Ummmm wtf? He told her to remake it because I'll get sick it's not a picky thing. Welp, when I got the order back it looked fine. I took a couple bites and I tasted onion I looked at the bottom and noticed there was still some pico and the fries were soggy. So ridiculous. I'll never be going back. If your not Spanish speaking or look Mexican they treat you different then there own kind I ordered a bean and cheese burrito the lady said 7 dollars no receipt or nothing I was starving so I just said okay. So I'm out to try more taco shops in the San Diego area, Gallegos is located in the center of City Heights off University. This Mexican restaurant seemed to attract lots of locals when I visiting to grab some dinner for the night. The place was packed right around dinner time and you can't even tell from the outside that they have a huge dining area on the inside. There is plenty of street parking in City Heights along the outside but I found there is also a parking lot behind the place as well. When walking into Gallegos you'll see that their menu has a decent amount of variety along with good prices. A burrito here will run you about $7 and a combo plate for around $9. People working the register inside were doing a fantastic job, they were able to deal with the huge influx of orders well and were friendly while doing it. The burritos here are chunky and thick, they aren't afraid to stuff their tortillas to the max. This massive burrito had all of the good stuff and not too much of the fillers like fries. Lots of finely diced carne asada and a great balance of cream and guac mixed into it. A great California burrito is served up here, and the supreme was worth the extra buck or so. I've noticed a lot of these shops are starting to offer sopes on their menus and it seems like most places in San Diego don't make them too well. Gallegos delivered though, their sopes were thick crispy pieces of corn that didn't get soggy with all the toppings. Even through all that stuff you could taste the moist chicken. What makes a good sope of course is how you make the masa base, which they do well here.. The beans & rice which came on the side were pretty good as well, lots of seasoning. The prices and service at Gallegos were great and I can easily say this place is one of the better places you'll find in City Heights for a taco shop. There is no salsa bar here but they offer you some prepackaged red or salsa verde sauces that they keep behind the counter. They weren't cheap about giving me extra, which is always a plus. The major letdown was seeing the credit card fee sign, after paying. Other than that, food was delicious and I enjoyed the spicy red sauce. read more

Ive got to say this is now my FAVE spot in City Heights. We ordered take out, and within 15 min our food was ready, HOT, FRESSSSH and most of all tasting amazing. The carnitas torta is filled with tons of meat, the carne asada fries have a huge portion (plenty of beans,sourcream,guac), the roll tacos are just the right crunchy ( not soggy at all & took us 10 min to get home). Extra salsa at no cost, horchata was tasting great. Tasted freshly made and great flavor. Would definately say this will be my familes go to mexican food from now on. I feel kind of bad leaving this review, but I am not a fan of this place... At all. I have friends that love this place so I've been brought here on multiple occasions. Tried their carne asada fries and carne asada burrito and have been disappointed by both. First off, there is no space here. If there is more than one person in front of you in line, you will be out the door. Really bad setup. Anyway,the way they make their carne asada fries is actually kind of upsetting. I enjoy thin crispy fries, & here they are more like thick-cut/ wedges. Everything on your plate is separated. Fries in the middle and guac/ sour creme are put on opposite sides of the plate. I found that by the time I mixed everything I had a big mess and not all of my fries were covered. A bite of fries with sour cream, a bite of fries and guac, a bite of fries alone because I had no more of anything else :/ The burritos here are just ok. Carne asada was ok. They don't have aguas frescas, which is important to me when looking for a good taco shop. Fountain does not count. My advise: This area is swarming with Mexican taco spots- I would explore something else read more

Though it's not in my usual stomping grounds, I stopped into Gallego's this week on the recommendation of a friend. Ordered the carne asada, per usual, and was quite pleased - this burrito was large! No recession at Gallego's. In addition to being large, this burrito had one of the best ratios of guacamole to meat, and one of the best distributions as well. No huge bites of guacamole and then desert dry spots. Why the four stars? No soda fountain, and no salsa bar (both of the salsas provided, a green with the chips and a red in a squeeze bottle, were mediocre, nothing exciting). Sodas were by the can, and I was so thirsty that this was a major disappointment. They did have some quality Mexican sodas though (I had Taminado or not sure what it's called but I highly recommend). They provide free chips at your table which is a nice touch, and the restaurant was mostly clean, though there were a few flies buzzing around. They made an extra carne asada burrito on accident and just gave it to us (large group of 9, guess they got orders a little mixed up), which was kind. A couple friends ordered California burritos, and they were still emitting steam by the last bite. I don't think I've ever seen a burrito that hot. I'm rarely in this neck of the woods, but the next time I'm there I wouldn't mind stopping in. read more

Good size on the burritos and great taste. I'm not a big fan of beans on carne asada fries (well even if it I'm the side inside the plate) Definitely sour cream and guaca on top of it not on the side on the same plate. That is be my only complain but other than that food is great and usually good service and fast cooks in the kitchen. I definitely will good in for a burrito some time soon. I've seen some bad reviews but I've never had any issues myself customer of 10 years. Food usually warm and tasty. Not sure why people have issues maybe if they speak up or know what they want instead of being so indecisive. Trust me I get annoyed when my girl can't choose what she wants. I have been to this restaraunt many times recently and enjoyed the great food that the owner, Ramon Gallegos, and his family prepare. he has a choice of many fresh drinks such as Horchata and Tamarindo. He also takes the time to personally come out and ask his guests how their food was. The last two times I have been there, I purchased the Hawaiian Burrito which is very good. Despite the bad experience i had here with one of the cashiers, I came back and gave this place another shot. Best decision I've ever made! I have become a regular here. I've tried out most of the menu and I live how most plates include their Pico de Gallo, Beans, Guacamole, and Sour Cream. I honestly recommend people to not just go for the roll tacos or carne asada fries. Grab yourself a combination plate. They also give complimentary chips and salsa, while you wait for your food.
