When you visit Nantucket you know ahead of time that price points are kicked up a notch. In the case of Galley Beach, it's nice to be served excellent food, which makes it much easier to forget about Island prices. Three of our party of four went for the halibut and loved the dish. I had the duck which was prepared perfectly and served with sauce and one potato. The one lonely portion of one potato was odd, but tasty. Meanwhile the service was solid and the view is awesome. I've watched many a Nantucket sunset and what Galley Beach offers is a sunset where you are not freezing or dressed like an eskimo as soon as the sun goes down. Hats off to whomever designed this space, as the entire place is welcoming and comfortable. And, it's quiet enough to be able to have a conversation - always a plus! read more

Like others, I only give this place 2 stars for the location. It was lovely being able to sit outside with our feet in the sand under the big tent. The food was mediocre and definitely overpriced. Horrible experience. Horrible waiter who had a complete attitude problem. These people are not doing charity work and need to understand that. We have been going for 5 years and never again will we attend during wine festival or anytime for that matter. People are pretentious and could care less. My husband and I were delighted and impressed by our dinner at Galley Beach. We took advantage of Restaurant Week to visit this upscale spot and the food and value far exceeded the price paid. The restaurant offered many options on its restaurant week menu - in fact so many options for each course that it was extremely challenging to choose. We settled on the duck egg and foie gras terrine appetizers, (foie gras for the win) the cod filet and venison entrees (the extremely tender venison squeaked out the win), and a chocolate dessert and a quince and olive oil cake confection which were each so rich we left food on our plates. I have never done this at a fine dining restaurant. Ever. Even on a cloudy night the view of the ocean was beautiful and cast a beautiful glow on the indoor dining space. I only wish our seating had been more comfortable; my chair was as hard as a rock. I hope we are able to return next season and catch one of the magnificent sunsets we have heard so much about. read more

Ok, I am giving this 4 stars for a few reasons. I'll list the good and the bad. 1. The sunset here is amazing. Pictures don't do it justice. You have to see it in person. Just watch it and enjoy it. Screw instagram. 2. The drinks are great and the bartenders are really friendly. 3. The prices for those drinks are insane. I had 3 drinks and it was $75. They include gratuity, but when it was explained to me the bartender replaced the word "gratuity" with "service" leading me to believe (for a second) that a tip was still necessary. I'm an idiot and still gave him an extra $10. 4. This is a tricky one ... the crowd. Personally I like being around rich assholes because I amuse myself by making fun of them in my head or to whomever I am with. I used whomever because we're talking about something that is obnoxious though I don't know if I used it correctly. That said, if the truly super wealthy annoy you, then don't go. You'll gag. 5. This restaurant was definitely worth the mile walk from town! The beach views were beautiful too! Only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is bc it's wayyyy expensive! I mean it was $40 for a lobster roll & $29 for a hamburger!!! My fish tostado was $46, but absolutely delicious...it didn't come with a side though & at that price we should definitely get something on the side lol. One of the worst meals ever. Overpriced, flavorless, and a management team that simply does not care. When the waiter asked, we relayed our displeasure, but he seemed not surprised. He said, "Sorry to hear that. Would you like your bill now?" When the hostess asked us if we enjoyed the meal, we told her it was the worst meal we had had on the island. She apologized and went to get a manager. They returned to the reception desk and then intentionally ignored us. This spoke volumes about the culture of this restaurant and its management. read more

Best views on the island to have a drink with friends or for a date. I do recommend getting a bottle though instead of single glasses as we made that mistake and spent $200 on 6 wine glasses! The seats on the beach are incredible. Just so peaceful and relaxing. We moved inside for dinner with still incredible views. We split an amazing crab cake for the appetizer. Then, I had the best scallops dish I've ever had in my life. They were big and so tasty! My friends had lobster, steak and other dishes they all loved. My parents and I had the most gorgeous dinner here. The ambiance was so stunning and both the food and service incredibly upscale. We had the honor to dine there during restaurant week and the food was out of this world! I had the lobster bisque and salmon and was very sad when it all disappeared into my belly. The Creme Brûlée was divine and after dinner we made our way outside to the fire to enjoy sunset. I have never written an on line review for anything before, but felt obligated to warn others about this restaurant. If I could give a minus stars rating I would. We googled the Galley Beach menu before going and the menu has prices listed like any traditional menu. when we arrived we were handed a menu with fixed price of $89 per person with up charges for more than half the selections in both starters and entrees. Had the food been outstanding, perhaps I would not be writing this. The Caesar salad had old lettuce and was not even on par with a chain restaurant anywhere in the U.S. The chicken was more like half of a dry Cornish game hen. My dinner guests had the salmon, which was okay, but nothing special, and the orecchiette was pretty good. I certainly do not think the kitchen deserved 3% mandatory tip. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are many restaurants on the island that cost less and serve waaaay better food. read more

Great, unbeatable setting... but, horrifically expensive, 23% mandated "gratuity" and still have to pay for a basket of crumbly bread rolls. Prefix of $89 for 2 courses, but unless you want a salad and the most basic main course, most dishes have a substantial upcharge. $23 cocktails. The food is ok, but not what you'd expect - bland flavors and really nothing memorable. Ordered the swordfish, and it was a very thin cut and overcooked - really very little flavor other than the grill char. I've been coming to Nantucket for 30 years and have always loved the Galley Beach Restaurant. I left very underwhelmed last night after taking my family there. The fixed menu plus up charging on anything and everything is over the top. Plan to spend about $225 per person if you go. $89 set menu but then 75% of items on the menu have a huge upcharge to the $89. The food was good but the presentation was mediocre and the wait staff was not attentive at all. We went to take pictures on the beach and came back to see our soups sitting on the table. Tip #1 ...wait until your customer is at the table to bring the food. I would recommend getting a drink there but going somewhere else for the food. The galley is 4x the price. read more

Frank Hersey, what an idiot. Came here with my girlfriend from a recommendation by the concierge at our hotel. Galley Beach has a great location right on the beach so we made the reservation right around sunset. The hostess shows us to our table and we ask the waiter for some bottled water and to see the wine menu. He brings us the water and says he will send out the wine adviser to assist us in choosing. The wine adviser, Frank Hersey, shows up at our table. My gf had the Riesling at our hotel so she asks for that. He says 'sure, we have 3 or 4 to choose from here.' She then asks 'are any of them sweet?' Frank replies 'only the cheap ones are sweet.' She then says 'well we had a really good one at our hotel that was sweet so do you have anything like that?' He replies, its '$75, you want it?' she asks 'well do you have it by the glass so I can taste it?' Frank rolls his eyes and says 'there is no way to taste anything, we don't give out free wine.' Frank then walks away before we were done. As if he wasn't rude enough he stopped to talk to the waiter about how cheap he thought we were. I went in the back to confront him and he wouldn't apologize. He said 'of course you can't taste wine from a bottle.' Gave him a piece of my mind after that and we left shortly after. I spoke to the hostess and the concierge at our hotel (we stayed at the Wauwinet) who both said that its just kind of the way he is. wow! read more

For food: five stars, easily among the three top chefs on the island. Both meals I've had were stellar. For everything else, barely three. And if it's your first time, strongly recommend not making the mistake we did of coming on a Major Night, like Labor Day night, when the Bronx Zoo is a tranquil oasis by comparison. The sunsets are nothing compared to the carryings on of the crowd. If you're looking for a Scene with some eye-opening people watching and a deafening noise level, this is it. Service is a bit choppy and confused. And order nothing from the bar until you've asked for the price first: what we found out we'd paid for a glass of champagne each is still giving us thrombosis. Alternatively, go on an "off" night, go early so you hit the (truly breath taking) sunsets right at dessert, and then flee before the hoi polloi descend. read more

Dined at Galley Beach tonight. Food was adequate at best. Treated like second class citizens as the "owner" who was dining next to us approached our table of eight women and told us to keep it down.....seriously? Am I ten years old? We were not throwing dinner rolls or acting foolishly. I guess laughing and talking loudly over their loud club music in the restaurant was considered inappropriate . The tuna tartare was overly spiced with ginger. My mouth was on fire. The veal meatballs were spiced so heavily with thyme etc...really abhorrent. Got a recommendation for Galley so I took the recommendation and I'm having a kale salad, their only option. I asked if the chef could accommodate me and was told my only option was the kale salad. Waited 90+ minutes for brunch entrees, and poured our own wine constantly. Out of water most of the meal. It's a delight to be there for sunset or lunch drinks but the food is AVERAGE at best. For an overly priced restaurant we received service from a timid waitress,not seasoned at all. Cesar salad had so much brown lettuce, I was embarrassed for them how they could even serve this salad. When I decided to write a review on Galley Beach, I thought it would be the minority evaluation, but it appears that many others share in the disappointment. We have been visiting Nantucket for over 25 years and Galley has been a tradition just about every one of those years, transitioning from dinner to lunch the last few. We live near the beach and have seen many spectacular sunsets so that was not the draw, and the experience has always been pleasant - until this year. Without plans for lunch, we made our decision and on the way called to see if they could accommodate us. The guy who answered the phone asked what time we would like, even though I had asked the question that way - "are you able to accommodate two for lunch now?". I told him we were just outside, and he said, "Come on in". We left the car with the valet and explained to the host that we had just called and were told to come in. He repeated what I said with a look of surprise and somewhat annoyedly led us to a table on the sand, passing several empty tables inside. It was windy outside, which, along with it being a bit after traditional lunch time, accounted for very few diners on the sand. We were not comfortable but there was no staff outside to help so my husband went back in and requested to be reseated inside. The host told him he would have to seat us at a table in a certain area because we "didn't have a reservation." The table was actually fine with us because it was a bit away from the more crowded area. When the waitress finally arrived, we ordered drinks and our lunch, including the bread ($3). By now my husband had told me what was said about our not having a reservation and I realized we were being treated like inferior clientele. Perhaps if we had made the reservation formally as the host seemed to require, he would have known by our phone number in their system (as almost every other restaurant on the island does) that we were frequent customers. After a satisfactory but not excellent lunch (chicken Milanese and a tuna sandwich), we were not inclined to linger where we apparently were not wanted. The check included a 23 percent gratuity on the overpriced food, $21 drink, and an $8 Bud Light. We were well aware that we were paying for the ambiance, but that should have included being respectfully accommodated rather than chastised for what they considered a violation of their reservation policy. End of an era unless new management comes in and changes a few things - particularly attitude. read more

Disappointed by the Galley, and we wanted to love it so much!! My boyfriend and I came here (first time for both of us) for our anniversary. We started with cocktails which were pretty good, we enjoyed the Hardcore Par-core the best. For food we ordered the crab cake, tuna tartare tacos, halibut, and salmon. The crab cake was delicious and probably our favorite dish of all the ones we tried. The halibut and salmon were good, however honestly just not that substantial regarding flavor. The salmon was just laid on top of some green beans/snap peas and the halibut was paired with brussel sprouts. And probably the biggest disappointment were the tuna tacos which were served on jicama wraps. Just so wrong in so many ways (and it was an additional $7??) Im sorry...but my god where are the carbs at this place?!! Of course the service and location were wonderful but the food was just not that great. Do yourself a favor and book a reservation at any of the other seafood restaurants downtown, the food is way better and cheaper in price too. read more

Great view, friendly staff. Food was overpriced for the taste. Tomato and cucumber gazpacho and the hummus was delicious. The French toast was dry and barely stuffed with the marscapone cheese and the berry compote was just to decorate the plate.
