Always a good choice to fill up on burgers at Game before going to the grocery store. I went in to Game famished before a trip to Kroger, and it was probably the best pre-shopping meal ever. You walk in, and it feels like you've walked into this big cabin in the mountains -- that's kind of the vibe there. Their patio has been closed up for the winter, and they have heat lamps out there right now, so we made our way under a giant heat lamp (how do I get one of these for my front porch?!) to see if Game lived up to its fanfare (and especially its sister restaurant's fanfare -- Hammerheads).
First off, our waitress was awesome -- she gave us enough time to ogle the menu, and she didn't look at me like I was a beer snob when I asked her about the numerous saisons on the beer list. She recommended this beer called St. Feuillien, which was FANTASTIC (and as an aside, I'm now on the hunt to find it in a local liquor store). We inquired about the fries -- a $2 side and a $4 basket; the baskets are HUGE, so we ended up splitting what still appeared to be a basket of truffle oil fries even though we asked for the cheaper side, which was awesome. I haven't even gotten to the burgers yet, but I'm 100% sure I'll be back just to sit at the bar and drink beer and eat fries.
While you can build your own burger, we were overwhelmed by all of the amazing options, so for our first time, we went with two of their pre-built burgers: the duck burger and the vegetarian grilled corn, poblano pepper, and garbanzo bean burger. The duck burger had greens, a fried egg, and this cranberry-jalapeno jam on focaccia bread. The veggie burger had brie, pickles, greens, tomato, and truffle mayo on a brioche bun. Here's the [not so] skinny: the duck burger is RICH, and if you're cautious about spicy stuff, the cranberries and jalapenos in the jam created this slightly sweet heat, but it paired well with the richness of the duck, so it wasn't spicy. I was curious about the focaccia bread, but it was perfect with the duck and perfect for soaking up all that egg yolk. The veggie burger was great, don't get me wrong, but it was a little messy given the soft texture of all the ingredients, which was compounded by the truffle mayo. As a flip flopping vegetarian for the last 14 years (definitely in an off year!), I have to say the duck burger won out for me, but my girlfriend preferred the veggie burger (with a little less mayo).
All in all, this was an amazing meal, and it's got some seriously creative dishes there -- their special was an alpaca burger, and they regularly have kangaroo, goat, venison, lamb, bison... you name it, on their menu. It was super cozy, our waitress was super easy-going and gave us a good run-through of the menu but enough time to decide, and their had good beers to go with their amazing burgers.
