Game N Grounds is a charming board game and coffee shop with a great fantasy/D&D vibe. It's a versatile spot where you can settle in for a game or just work on your laptop. I loved their drink selection--they offer wine, cider, and beer alongside standard coffee. Their food menu is also solid, featuring sandwiches, charcuterie boards, and pastries. We visited on a Thursday morning & it was surprisingly packed; every table was full. We managed to snag a spot in the middle, but the space felt very cramped. We were so close to the next table that we could hear their entire conversation, which wasn't ideal. My friend enjoyed the club sandwich, which came with a side of tater tots. We both tried the hibiscus iced tea--it was refreshing, but I have to admit it was a bit lacking in flavor. They have a cool selection of games, plushies, shirts, and coffee beans for sale. The back lot is extremely small. Plan on finding street parking. Arrive very early to beat the crowds! Good drinks, friendly staff, great game selection. However, I went to their Friday board game night and ended up having to leave without playing. Not welcoming whatsoever. The staff were great and friendly but no one was clearly part of the event, all the people were already mid game at the start time (6pm) and all the tables were taken so I couldn't even sit down and wait for players to show up. I asked some people that were just arriving and setting up if they were part of the Friday meet up and they said no (and didn't invite me, which is fine because they aren't part of the event itself anyway). How does one join a game or make friends when none of the gamers are open to playing with someone new? All the games were already running and clearly it was people who were established friends not mingling with others not at their table. There should be someone in charge at the very least breaking the ice as well as a designated area for the game night. I left feeling very very sad. Will try the Monday meet up and update my review if they are more welcoming. read more

Such a fun place! Everyone that worked there was so kind and nice. We walked in and went to the cafe counter and ordered a cold brew and a lemonade and once our friends met us we ordered a crepe, hot honey tots, and a grilled cheese. Everything was so good and we had gone a little before closing on Saturday night and it was so chill and not overly crowded. The employee behind the games counter explained how to play the game Azul which I've always wanted to play and was super kind and helpful. Dominic is a gem! He just embodies a welcoming coffee-shop feel that makes you feel like a regular. We got a Bard latte & Misty Step Latte. The Bard was so good (we did it with almond)- 10/10. The Misty was also good, I think I just expected a little more vanilla, it was very lavender-y. Otherwise, everything was delicious and fresh. 10 out of 10, I've been here a few times both with friends and solo for magic Commander night and not only is the staff super friendly and helpful but so is the community that goes there. They have great food great drinks. I personally love their mead selection. Highly recommended. read more

But most of all, I love how involved they are with planning events and allowing people to play all kinds of games. My only gripe is that the dressing used for the side salads are spicy, which doesn't cater to everyone and isn't mentioned anywhere on the menu. I've always heard great things about this place! We finally decided to drop by on a Monday morning on the way to work. We parked on the small street next to it and there were like 3 people in there and 1 worker. I hopped in line and looked at their menu briefly. This place is much bigger than I expected! It looks like a really cool hobby shop and I hear it gets pretty busy here with open mic and other events. I ordered the iced horchata latte which came out almost immediately! I was very surprised at how quickly he made it. Their lids are a bit "annoying" because there's a plastic flap so whenever you touch your straw, it makes a really "nails on chalkboard" sound lol. The drink was good though! It's rare to find a good horchata latte nowadays. It was creamy and delicious, wish it had cinnamon to it, even just a little bit but otherwise it was great compared to some other ones I've had. This place is huge!! They have another big room that you can walk into as well. Tons of seating which is nice. Lots to look at as well. Definitely coming back to try their other drinks soon! I have driven past this place many times and never thought too much about it other than I thought it was cool to have a spot for games/drinks for those into that. Never expected it to be so popular and busy. Came here on a Thursday night for open mic, my daughter and boyfriend performed a few songs and I was so impressed, it was her first time and she did amazing, I don't think I could ever do that, proud of her. The place was packed with people hanging out, eating, drinking, playing games, watching the show, etc. it was a great time. The MC did a great job and so did the various performers. I would like to come back when they have another open mic night, it was fun and I tried a BJ Blonde Pale Ale that was pretty good as well. I really like the concept of this place. It's different and unique. I love that they are keeping old school board games alive with a fun space to play them. They have so many games you can play or bring your own. It's a cozy setup. You can sit inside or outside. They have food and coffee. All the employees I interacted with were very friendly. They even brought our dogs a water bowl while we sat outside on the patio with them. I haven't been in quite a while. I ordered the same drink that I had bought when I used to go more often. It was a chocolate banana shake with a shot of coffee. It was delicious. However when I saw the total of my one drink I was shocked. It was almost $11 and it was so small. I would say for $11 I got what was equivalent to a Starbucks small Frappuccino. It was gone so fast. If the prices were lower I would go way more or if I felt like I was getting $11 worth of a drink. The tater tots I got were $11. That I can stomach paying for more. So even though I love supporting local small businesses I just don't want to pay those prices. What a fantastic find! I had a client meeting here and it was really delightful. I'm not even a gamer, but I could definitely see coming here with friends or a date for a fun afternoon or evening. At this time, they're doing some work on their kitchen, and though I wanted something more savory I had a strong feeling towards the pumpkin muffin in the pastry case. Which is weird, because I don't actually like pumpkin. But this thing was delicious... fresh tasting and not overwhelming in the PSL kind of way. Coffee is also very good and I love the mugs. one of my favorite places to hang out, do work, and play board games! there's a good amount of space in both the cafe side and game side, and even some tables outside. service is always quick and friendly, and are helpful in finding new games for you and your group to try :) i've tried a handful of drinks now, and always end up at the bard latte, perfect sweetness for someone who isn't into coffee. their matcha is presweetened which they are transparent about, but hope they upgrade to ceremonial at some point! as for food, i'm a big fan of the garlic grilled cheese and caprese sandwiches as a vegetarian! i have friends who like the black bean one, but i prefer the others. they have a great variety of games, they recently started charging $5 to start, but you can play as many games as you want so it's still a good deal! and don't be afraid to ask the staff about recommendations based on your group. they also have events throughout the week, so check their calendar for paint and sips, trivia, and tournaments. parking can be found on hillview, the closest stretches have limits on parking length, so watch out! read more

Stopped by here just to have a moment of creativity of writing and just existing. This place is WONDERFUL. A lot of space as well as wonderful people. I'm doing this no sugar bit for a little white (health, am I right?) and I don't drink coffee unless it's creamy and sugary. Needless to say, I found something that sounded like I could maybe do it! Substitute honey, perhaps? YES. I was helped by Christiane who was so helpful and amazing. We decided I should try the Volteado because they also mentioned honey would be good with the coffee and infused milk with vanilla. AND MY GOODNESS WAS IT GOOD. Oat milk substitute for the regular milk. Now, I'm here just enjoying and relaxing...taking a moment that I rarely get lately of good lighting, good people, and good vibes. I was meeting a friend here for lunch. First off parking sucks. Street parking was limited and the lot across the street does not allow Game n Grounds parking. I circled for about 10 minutes and I was able to find parking pretty close by. My friend, on the other hand... She had to park across the street on Devonshire. Once inside, the place was very warm and cozy. I ordered a turkey pesto panini with a hibiscus iced latte. The sandwich was very good. It came with a side salad and that was good as well. The hibiscus drink was just ok for me. We found a table in the game room. It was pretty loud in there since there was a few games going on. We didn't mind at all. It was great background noise for us while we caught up on some gossip. We noticed they have different theme nights. We will definitely be back for some of those. read more

My favorite place outside my own home to play board games! The interior is well designed and with interesting and beautiful artwork. The main tables range from some two seaters, majority four seaters, and some 6 seaters in the back. There is a coffee table area where you can cram some chairs in for a larger group as well. The staff are friendly and polite with prompt service. Game rental only costs $5 which is a small price for hours of fun for the group! The drink selection is decent but as someone who doesn't drink coffee I am left wanting for more fruity options or more soda options. The food was a big disappointment for me and my friends. We ordered the breakfast burrito, quesadilla, different paninis and some dessert options. The breakfast burrito is pressed like the paninis and is quite small for the price. The pico gave an odd bitter after taste and the salsa added only a breath of zest but had to be confirmed after taking a small spoon taste. Hot sauce would be welcome. I added two pieces of bacon but the way it was cooked made me think I ordered ham as it was still soft and chewy. The loaded quesadilla was our safe choice but the included baby corn overpowered the whole thing. The texture is like small raw potatoes which contradicts the crispy tortilla and soft chewy cheese. Overall it was... ok. The hot honey tots are the closest to the "worth it" category but falls a little short. The crispy texture and potato flavor were passable but lacked seasoning. The cheese was layered and melty which was nice but the bacon pieces were still lightly cooked and chewy and didn't stick well despite the cheese so the included spoon was necessary. The amount for $10 is what makes it worth it as a table snack. The "pizza" and turkey pesto panini are pretty light in protein department so despite being a pressed sandwich it still feels like you're eating mostly bread for $15 sandwiches. Luckily we ordered the pesto on the side as it was VERY salty. Sandwiches are my main go to when preparing game meals for friends and family at home so this hits harder for my standards. The paninis need some more work. Drinks are ok but YMMV depending on your preferences. My group and I like a little more sweetness and depth for the $8 range. Orchata latte iced - 7.5/10 Bard's latte hot - 7/10 Orange creamsicle smoothie - 6.8/10 Hot chocolate - 7.8/10 Mexican hot chocolate 7/10 Game selection - 8.5/10 Interior/Table space - 8.8/10 Overall food experience - 6/10 My summary is that GNG is my top place for board games with decent drinks but as it is now I would eat before or after as the quality/quantity and flavor of the food we've tried so far does not match the price. read more

Honestly, I don't know why it took me so long to check this place out. Don't make my mistake-don't judge a coffee/games/cards spot based on the ones you've been to before. This one is on another level!! As I walked in I was pleasantly surprised by how vibrant, clean and welcoming the space felt. The atmosphere was buzzing with people chatting, drinking and playing games. The shelves are stacked with board games and unique décor that instantly adds to the charm of this shop. Customer service? 10/10 The staff went out of their way to find us a spot to sit & they were so friendly and inviting. I ordered a lavender latte with whole milk (asked for less sugar) absolutely amazing. My friends had an ale and an orange juice. This place is definitely my new go-to. What a cool spot! Such a great place for a date or family fun night. You can order food and enjoy play by a ton of games. You provide some form of identification and can check out cards, board games, and a number of the activities available. They have events throughout the week. Dungeons and Dragons seems to be a big winner in terms of the games. The food was unspectacular but the atmosphere made up for it. We ordered this very cutely shaped chicken panini (see picture) and a breakfast burrito. Both were (maybe) 3 s. We had coffee and I think we had to pay extra for the ketchup . Love this space and the drinks are delicious! I tried the Bard's Tale and it was one of the best lattes I've ever had. The staff is super friendly too and it's a pretty spacious plate with plenty of street parking around. Service is nice whether it be to ask for recommendations on something to snack on or something to play. A great menu featuring not only signature coffee drinks themed to gaming, but also delicious food! They also serve wine, ale, and mead. If this place were just a cafe it would be highly rated but it is so much more than that! It's a community, a gathering place, a game store, and event location all in one. There is just a ton of gaming space here, tables and tables for you and your friends to game at. Each one has a QR code so that you can order from your phone at the table, so need to wait in line! This is a cool feature because if you're in the middle of the game and get thirsty or hungry you don't need to put everything on pause to go to the counter and order. They have a decent selection of games, a very inviting atmosphere, a lot of different spaces for gaming from large tables to 2 tops to a living room type space. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. There's a small parking lot in the back, but most likely you will need to find street parking... the parking situation is one drawback of this place, it can be crowded and when it is finding a place to sit can be tough. read more

Amazing drinks! This cafe is so cute and well themed. A lot of their food and beverages are named after Dnd/magic the gathering inspired people/characters. For instance their coffee latte Queens Lavender is delicious! I have yet to try their food but I've had a wide selection of their drinks and all of them have been absolute smashes!
