I have a love/hate relationship with Standard. I love the fact that there is now a sweet ass beer garden in my neighborhood where I can go to throw back some cold n' frosty brews to wash down fried pickles, hush puppies, pulled pork or brisket sammiches in the communal comfort of picnic tables and hofbrau umbrellas. There's really nothing quite like it in Northwest DC, and I gotta say it's a much better use of space than that stupid nursery that used to occupy the space. Who wants plants over beer and brisket? I mean really... I hate the fact that I didn't come up with the idea to start this amazing little enterprise. Whoever did is a smarty pants who deserves all the money he must be making by selling liters of beer from a hut the size of my bathroom - talk about low overhead! My own jealousy aside, Standard is an awesome place to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Although it's typically always packed, you'll get a seat if you don't mind lurking and hovering over people who look like they're at their soon-to-be-last drop. If you're not comfortable lurking, you may be shit out of luck. The fried pickles, raw pickles w/ kraut are awesome little appetizers to whet your palate for the cold beer you'll wash them down with. After a few more of said beers, you'll want more of said food, at which point you look for a delicious BBQ pulled pork sammich or some beef brisket on a nice, soft bun. Order some hush puppies or sweet potato fries to accompany these items, and you're livin' large - all for about $30. Not bad for a brew-filed afternoon of fun in the sun! If i had to pick out something to pick on, you know, for the sake of doing so, it'd be that Standard is hot as hell on a sunny afternoon. They should find a way to turn those heating lamps they have on the walls for winter time into AC units in the summer. That, or by a Dyson fan or something. Otherwise, expect to be baking like banana bread while you sit in the confines of the fences and beer umbrellas at this fine establishment. I'm liking the beer garden trend; it doesn't get much better than an ice cold beer outdoors on a nice day. Standard is a beer garden in the true sense: large garden with communal picnic tables and a minuscule interior. I tried (unsuccessfully) to arrive before 6pm on a Wednesday; got there at 6:30 and the place was packed. Fortunately I managed to score a couple of seats inside at the tiny bar (room for six plus eight more in the window). There are six draft beers (three German, three American micros), which included Hofbrau Original lager, Kostritzer schwartzbier, North Coast Scrimshaw pils and Avery's Ellie's Brown Ale, all available in mass (liter) or half liter sizes. They also carry Boylan's sodas and Mexican Coke (made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup). The menu is limited out of necessity: with a small kitchen on the second floor, there's not much room to cook (tip: there is a second bathroom upstairs.) But don't overlook it! The pulled pork sandwich is to die for: imbued with a great smokey flavor. This can be accompanied by hush puppies or onion rings, but I found the portion size to be more than adequate, so maybe they've been taking criticisms to heart. Don't miss this place, just try to arrive early if you want a seat outdoors. read more

I'm a big believer in having realistic expectations when considering a review so as long as you are a fan of: 1) being outside 2) beer gardens 3) snacky/BBQ tasty but CASUAL fare than you will love Standard. Its a great concept, locally and independently owned. The food is tasty (The corn is to die for as are the doughnuts) and it has a great beer selection. Its a great use of the old Garden District space. Yes it can get crowded but its a friendly atmosphere and everyone just shares the space. I'm a big fan of the patio expansion on S Street. I am so happy to have a beer garden around the corner from my house. I will be spending many a summer afternoon here. They have 5 german beer options along with a small menu of beer food including bratwurst and corn. The space is small and 90% outdoors so it's not an option on a cold or rainy night. BEST PLACE IN DC FOR DAY DRINKING!!! Been here several times, the last being Saturday. Located on the corner of 14th and S, The Standard pops-out at you with its German Beer Garden setting. Picture several picnic tables and high-tops underneath umbrellas in a gated outdoor setting. To think that this place used to be a lawn and garden center approximately 3 years ago! One of the coolest things about this place is that they are probably the ONLY PET-FRIENDLY drinking spot in DC. Please correct me if I am wrong on this point. They also have bike racks, if you are looking to quench your thirst while on a long ride. The service is great. Friendly, prompt, helpful. Be aware that it is almost always crowded. No matter what time of the day it is, there will be people there. Also, expect other patrons sitting next to you to start-up a conversation. I've met some cool people there. I've always walked by this place and see lots of people outside enjoying beers but never had a chance to try it out. I came here with a group of 6 friends after brunch on a Saturday and surprisingly enjoyed this spot. They had a great beer selection for a summer afternoon and lots of outdoor seating. I had been kind of discounting this place a bit just because the bars on the outside were so high that it made the place look a little like a prison yard. It seemed like there should have been inmates pumping iron within. But it was such a beautiful day that staying inside was simply not an option, and I figured I would give it a shot. And I am immensely glad that I did. The communal picnic tables encouraged (i.e. "forced") my friend and me to talk to our neighbors, who turned out to be these two crazy guys who were going to do mushrooms and go to the Holocaust Museum the next day. Uhh, whatever dudes! This is the kind of banter you can only hope to encounter when you go here. From what I could observe, the beer comes in bottles, pints, or liter mugs, depending on how silly you feel like getting, I suppose. I was trying not to overdo it, so I appreciated that they have the little Full Sail Session Lagers. Cute and just effective enough. My pulled pork sammy was tasty, especially with smatterings of caramelized burnt ends in it, and friend M's brat with kraut apparently "hit the spot." Simple, solid drinking food. There was a guy walking around with trays of fresh doughnuts, so we could do nothing except succumb to them and exchange $5 for six rings of golden, sumptuous, fried dough. They were gone in less than three minutes. Frankly, now I can't wait to come back here and bask in the sun while drinking beer and shoving the occasional doughnut into my face. Didn't think I'd dig it. I did. The food was really great (and I'm from Texas). They don't need to upscale their food choices; it's a perfect picnic! How did the hipster burn his mouth? He ate his food from Standard before it was cool. Went here on Sat. afternoon after doing a scavenger hunt in DuPont and I was hungry! So hungry that we walked the long distance moved our way through the hipsters and ordered. First, for $7.27 the brisket sandwich was nothing spectacular. Kind of dry for my taste. The G/F said the burger was very good, but not much food for that price. Second, you can buy sides a' la carte for $2.73. Oh how cool they even the price out to $10.00! Wow... Got the pickles and sauerkraut, horrible. The pickles were nothing that resembled a pickle and the sauerkraut was way over cooked, to the point of bland unseasoned cabbage. Two bites was enough for me. Had some of the fries, I would give two thumbs up. Maybe I ordered the wrong things off the menu because others enjoyed their meal but I'll put it this way, I ate my sandwich and a good portion of sides but was still able to have a fully loaded half smoke 10 mins later without being full. This is a great beer garden on 14th and S. I went here with some friends this past Friday, and while we had to stand and drink our beers for a while, a table eventually opened up. The beer was little pricey, but still a good selection. I think it's important for reviewers to keep in mind that having 6-7 beers on tap is still a pretty decent amount of beers. Not everyone can be Church Key. Anyway, everyone in my group was able to find a type of beer that they enjoyed (be it hoppy, dark, wheaty, etc.) and we were all pleased with the large sizes of the beers. The service was great, and they were able to make some pretty good recommendations based on our tastes. I guess the only issue I had with Standard was that it did take us quite some time to get a table, I just wish it was bigger! read more

Imagine how shocked I was to stroll up to the Standard on the first sunny day in a week and and sit down immediately -- at 1 p.m.! My pulled pork sandwich was spot-on, though I do not claim to be an expert in North Carolina-style anything. I've read complaints that the sandwiches are too small to be a meal, but it was perfect for me and my two boy diners. We also ordered some hand-cut fries (excellent and crispy), corn-on-the-cob (delish) and some disappointing potato salad. I knew the PS was gonna be a wash when I saw how white it was; non-mustard PS salad almost always falls flat. Everyone should try to eat here once before the summer arrives, because I have a feeling it will be insanely hard to get into. The prices are fair, and the food is good. I'm a vegetarian, so I can't speak for any of the meat offerings, but Standard makes a mean (and generous) grilled cheese sandwich, their onion rings are stellar (and I don't even usually like onion rings), and the corn is so good it makes me think maybe Artur Boruc is on to something. It can take some patience to get a seat, yes, but that means you're somewhat less likely to wind up sitting next to an impatient jerk, which is not a bad thing at all in my book. Considering what the waitstaff has to contend with, I think they do a darn good job. Moreover, they seem to care about what kind of job they're doing, which is always nice. And, on a completely shallow note, they aren't bad to look at, either (This goes for behind the bar, too). In short: a charming and delightful place that would be even more charming and delightful if they served pie and attracted fewer bros (but I can make those same complaints about a lot of places in this city). read more

The Standard is a place that combines many of my favorite things about the summer.... enjoy a cold beer in a big stein outside with friends at a communal table and have BBQ with it! Mmmmmmh! I am happy that somebody had the brilliant idea to take over the space the Garden District used to occupy on 14th Street and put a beer garden in it. Great German beers and some German treats - pretzels, Landjaeger... - but the main meals are pulled pork or brisket sandwiches. And they do not skimp with the meat. Love them! Much better idea than the disappointing German-esque food at another great beer garden joint in town, the Biergarten Haus. A really nice outdoor spot for barbecue and drinks. I had the pulled pork sandwich, just the right size. Delicious. Just good tender meat without a lot of extra sauce trying to mask dry meat like a lot of places do. The corn was amazing -grilled with cheese all over it. Quite decadent. I always enjoy it when a place offers us non-beer drinkers a hard cider. And being able to put your cider over ice on a warm summer evening is very pleasant. Greetings fellow Yelpers, I visited the standard a couple weeks ago. I was craving bar-b-que and had to try this place based on other reviews. by way of full disclosure, i got mine to go. which means all the food had to be wrapped so i don't believe this is a true assessment of the food. I want to be fair, so I'll admit my bias first. I lived in Houston for 8 yrs . I grew up on Texas and Carolina bar-b-que.I think its in my blood. I give the pulled pork sandwich a 10 out of 10, the deep fried pickles were a new taste for me and I'm not going to judge them yet. The Germany Brisket, is just that German not your typical Texas, southern Bar-b-que. I've never had beef brisket with cole slaw before. I don't think we would ever do that in Texas. You wont taste that smoked meat bite. The brisket was good. The hush puppies are huge, and part of the problem. I'm used to golden brown crunchy on the outside soft warm moist on the inside traditional southern hush puppies. by comparison these seem too big to cook all the way thru. the inside was a bit raw. Now i realize most of this is about personal tastes and what i am accustom to. i wonder if standard decided on this taste profile, and again I know its now Texas style. I would recommend it and do try their selection of beers. if you have the time to stop and sit to enjoy the surroundings its a yes. to be fair , i will be back and sit for service. Cannot say enough to recommend this place. It's a beer garden, so obviously, if you don't like eating or drinking outside, don't go. But for those who enjoy drinking delicious German and US beers outside while gobbling down the AMAZING hush puppies, go here. I can't get enough of this place. Everything I've had to eat and drink here has been incredible, but I especially love the Hofbrau they have on tap and the hush puppies. This place does tend to get crowded, so if you arrive later at night, don't be surprised to not find anywhere to sit/stand. The staff is always on point, and seems to be able to feel out if tables want to be left alone or if they want staff to stop by regularly. read more

Welcome to the neighborhood Standard! We met some friends there for drinks the other night. The beer garden is great. Strands of white lights provide illumination. Picnic tables or long high tables offer plenty of seating. The brick wall hasheaters all along the wall, so even on somewhat colder nights its still pretty warm. The inside bar area is very small, but trust me, you want to be sitting outside anyway. The draft selections is great and the big german mugs complete it. They have a couple german beers as well as a domestic IPA and Pilsner. I wasnt aware they had food, but the menu looked intriguing so I went back the next day for lunch. I got a brisket sandwich and hush puppies to go. Both were phenonemal. Cant wait to go back and try the rest. Great place! read more

A welcome addition to the 14th Street corridor by adding a new option to one of DC's favorite March through October activities: drinking outside. I luckily snagged a table by 12:30 pm this past Saturday, as the place was packed nearly 30 minutes later and stayed that way all afternoon. Got to sample everything from the menu -- minus the pulled pork which was not ready yet -- and all items were quite good. Same for the beer and excellent service. One of the more exciting moments of my life was watching their hog head go by to another table. It is literally a giant dead pig head that you get to rip apart and shove the meat in your mouth. We ordered one IMMEDIATELY. But it was too late - they only serve two pig heads a night and we were the third orderers. Dang! Next time we will snag that as soon as we sit down. This is a beer garden and it was a very pleasant place to be. The heat lamps were much appreciated (as there is no indoor seating!) and it was nice sitting in a T-shirt under the lamp in cold weather. I did not enjoy their fried pickles but LOVED the hush puppies. I did not like my main dish - don't remember the name but there were some sausage slices covered with a ketchup-y sauce over fries. I loved the sausage slices but hated the sauce, and there was too much sauce and it saturated the sausage and fries, contaminating the taste of the whole dish. I just hope next time we can get the pig head.. and some more hushpuppies. Without the ketchupy sauce the fries would have been amazing too. We'll be back again to eat more things. I think after next time I'll want to upgrade the stars, because we will get that pig head and it looks amazing! read more

After walking past this little establishment all summer and wondering why the kitschy shop next door, Pulp, had such a cute, popular patio, I finally figured out the "patio" was actually the new beer garden Standard. Yeah, I'm slow... When the temperatures crept back up to bearable last night, I decided it was time to try Standard before winter hits with full force. Surprisingly, my party of three found a spot at one of the tables next to the heat lamps with no problem. As soon as we set, a waitress greeted us and asked if we had any questions about the menu. Noticing a decent selection of 6-7 beers on tap (as well as some Boylan's soda offerings - love that they have root beer and cream soda available!), we quickly put in our orders and began browsing the food menu. For dinner, everyone in my group ordered the brisket sandwich. Originally, we were going to go with the pulled pork based on other Yelpers' recommendations, but once we learned it was served in the Carolina BBQ style (vinegar-based) we opted for the brisket's sweeter, red sauce. The brisket had a nice smokey flavor and they certainly don't skimp on the serving size! To top off our meals, we tried the fried pickles (long spears lightly fried in an almost tempura-like style), fries (pretty good though a little too crispy for my tastes), and hushpuppies (amazing!). My only complaint is that I discovered this spot right as the temperature is about to plummet - seeing as how I grew up in Florida, I have no idea how I'll be able to tolerate an outdoor restaurant/bar in winter weather. I'm sure I'll find someway to make it work... just for the hushpuppies alone. read more

Alright, I've been back a bunch since my last review and haven't encountered any more problems with the service here. Based on the sheer number of times I've ended up here, I guess my heart finds it worth more stars even though I can't objectively think of many reasons why this place is that great. It's small, hard to find seating, a little overpriced, the food isn't stellar...and yet, somehow it is more than the sum of its parts. Food and beer were great, and prices about average for DC. I got the pulled pork sandwich (as basically every other Yelper suggested) and it was really good! But it was also pretty small! Fries weren't bad but nothing to write home about. Some friends got the fried pickles and Mexican corn, and while I think they liked it, I can't personally attest to them. Service isn't too bad, considering it's like a big family reunion every night. Let me explain. There are picnic tables and a few smaller standing area tables, and typically tons of people swarming around said tables. The servers do a pretty good job of making sure you're happy and have a full glass, but you may need to flag someone down. We spent a few hours here on a pleasantly warm, but miraculously-not-too-hot August day. When we arrived, the outdoor seating was pretty open, although it got more crowded as the afternoon wore on. The service was a bit aloof (edging on snooty), but overall we enjoyed the food and beer, although I'm sure everything tasted just a little better since it was served under an umbrella and on a picnic table. The menu is perfect for the beer garden setting, with lots of options for snacking and a few bigger dishes if you need something more substantial to go with your beers. The sausages were probably the best items, but the fried pickles, french fries, coleslaw, and cucumber salad sides were also very good and pretty fairly priced for the portion sizes. The beer menu is smallish, when compared to other beer-focused spots, but well curated. I'm usually skeptical of fruit beers, but the grapefruit beer I had was delicious and summery. Like a really good shandy, but not too sweet. I'll definitely be back to grab a snack, relax in the shade, and drink a few beers when the weather is nice. read more

Been there a few times this year and last year. Very much appreciate the beer selection. I wish they would upscale their food choices a bit. Those are solid, don't get me wrong, but could be a tad fancier. I had great duck sausage with fig and caramelized onions on the West coast, why not here? It is not that much of a stretch. Still for DC this is already pretty good. I don't recommend their overly fried stuff though - donuts, hush puppies, etc - all too greasy. Enjoyed the hot dogs and bbq, many seem to think so - the place is pretty packed, but I don't mind standing, just don't go for the one liter mugs until you sit. I like this place but I'm not sure that I would ever wait in line for it... As others have mentioned they have a pretty limited menu but I'm okay with that. I'm a fan of the pulled pork and the Mexican corn and my Texan friends swear by the brisket. For me, the corn alone is worth a trip. They also have a fun selection of retro/hipster sodas and some beer. The service is fine, not oozing with personality but it gets the job done. We are usually there around noon on the weekend and I feel like people seem like they are just waking up. Everyone easing into the day works just fine. Honestly, a lot of perkiness at that time of day would probably be annoying. They only thing that would make the outdoor space better would be it if they brought in some of those giant industrial fans. Althought they have umbrellas for shade it is hot under them. Getting a little air moving would be fantastic. As other yelpers have mentioned, get there on the early side. Some people bring the Sunday paper and camp out. read more

I've visited the Standard a few times since it opened, and have had generally fine things to say about it except that they had the best fried pickles that I had tasted in this city. That was the first time I had them when they opened, since then they've gone down hill. Of course, it's a beer garden style establishment with only a handful of barstools located inside. They have 6 (I think) beers on tap and they offer some German options and then some American craft beers, so the selection is very nice. The decor is 'meh.' Surprise, more carbon filament lights. But, I will admit that by virtue of opening before some of the new entrants on 14th Street, they were on the early side of the carbon filament light bulb trend on the street. I like the sandwiches and meats, too. Very tasty and very reasonably priced. Prices on 14th Street continue to increase so it's great to have some reasonable options, when you get get in. Otherwise, I tend to avoid the Standard because it's so darn crowded. A good problem to have if you own the place, but not an attractive quality for a small group who just wants to have a liter of beer and sit outside. Finally, the service leaves much to be desired. The waitstaff is just 'meh'. They're not overly friendly or helpful, in my opinion. Last night I asked, "Do you take American Express?" The bartender lady couldn't even muster the energy or politeness to open her mouth and utter the words, "No, we do not." She shook her head like a 5-year old. When it comes down to it, instead of the Standard, you might as well grab take out and a nice six pack and go find a friend's patio where you can actually relax. read more

We came here around 1pm on a Saturday. Right before the rush. This place was already packed, but the minute we saw a table open up we grabbed it. My fellow pale Irish kids, if you come here be prepared to bake (i.e. bring sunscreen). There is very little shade. Theres gotta be something to be said for turning what was probably a vacant lot into a beer garden. Lots of tables, just minimal shade. Their beer list isn't huge, but everything on it is good. They also serve a few different sizes. If youre in the mood for a lot, get the big stein, also known as the stein as big as your head. Seriously, it is. The staff is very nice. The Standard brings some much needed outdoor space to the area! I really like the hefe-weissbier and the pulled pork sandwich. The pork doesn't have a NC or Memphis sauce, but it is perfectly smoked so it doesn't taste bland. The bun and cole slaw make it a great sandwich. And who can resist a warm, cinnamon donut from their donut-making machine? It is very casual atmosphere with picnic table seating. If you are wearing a dress or a skirt, you'll have to do a little maneuvering to get in and out with your dignity. Fun place! read more

This is a great concept, but I feel like the food falls just a bit short. I ordered the bratwurst, and I felt like a single (albeit big and tasty) sausage and kraut for $7 was a bit pricey. Maybe throw in some chips or something? My date had the pulled pork bbq, and it was tasty, but again, price seemed a bit off for $7 per sandwich. I think they need to tweak the menu a bit. The beer selection however is great. I am thrilled that more places are serving great german beer in large liter steins.
