Nice surprise given that my expectations of this little place were pretty low. While I ate a Southwest Salad, he dug into the raw broccoli salad. My salad was okay, but I particularly appreciated the fact that the ingredients were separately packaged with desiccant tabs, a brilliant idea for maintaining freshness. His raw broccoli salad was really quite delicious and I took a snapshot of the package label just so I could figure out how to make it myself at home, yes I cheated. Mr. Picky really is just that, picky, and if he likes it then you know it's got to be good. But he also has a serious sweet tooth and bought himself some Brownie Bites--he loved those things so much that he bought more boxes to take home, and I didn't have the heart to tell him it was probably healthy. As for my key lime pie, that worried me, because I couldn't figure out how plant-based could deliver; however, I quite liked it and could taste the cinnamon in the oat crust. Overall, I was expecting a 2-out-of-5 experience and instead was pleasantly surprised. Great service, good food! It's difficult to find Raw Vegan places to eat in Houston, so I was pretty excited about this place. I really enjoyed it. It's very small (5-6 cafe style tables) and it's inside what looks to be a medical office - so it can be confusing once you get there. I had my 10 month old baby with me, if I had the stroller with me it would have been too cramped. Luckily they had a high chair! The food was pretty good and the servings are on the smaller side. I think I'm just used to eating a huge salad all the time though. Everything looks really good but it can get pricey. I had the Beet Burger, it was really good with a nice kick to it, with two sides a garden salad side & kale salad. I also had a blended smoothie which was delicious. Even though I have tried this restaurant previously, I was wanting to participate in the Too Good To Go app where you can purchase food from their restaurant that is at expiration date or close to it in order to reduce restaurant food waste. The first time I used the app the whole process worked fine. Yesterday when I was signed up to receive 2 "surprise bags" the restaurant cancelled only a couple hours before I was to arrive for pick up. Today I had paid for 3 surprise bags and arrived at the beginning of the pick up time...waited in line for 20min before I was told that while I was in line after the pick up time start the manager had cancelled the order. So, besides wasting my time and gas driving to the restaurant, my money I paid ahead of time will not be given back until 14 days after the cancellation for today's and yesterday's order. In my opinion, if you sign up for a program you need to be professional enough to fulfill your end of the bargain. I will never order at this restaurant again read more

My newest obsession is raw/vegan/vegetarian foods. Crazy right?! But it's true, it does make you genuinely feel better. If anyone has known me I've been diagnosed with gout flare ups and was on medication. My symptoms and overall condition has subsided by changing my diet. I used to eat terribly and drink excessively. Cutting back on the drinking drastically and eating better I have seen results quickly. This place is nested away right under the bridge of US-MAIN/90. It's in the back of the Cardiac Clinic, and very confusing because they have seminars/boot camps in the front room, which you have to walk past to enter into the cafe/kitchen area. On this day my gf and I split two dishes. The first was the veggie burger with avocado, it was solid, but the baby spinach portobello wrap meal, was where it was at! The wrap itself was good but the salad with the dressing was to die for, the dressing was the best I've had and it wasn't even a creamy fatty dressing. In sum, I was blown away. But let me start at the beginning. I simply searched "vegan" in Houston and Garden Kitchen came up. I put the address in my GPS and just went. If I had actually read some of the Yelp reviews thoroughly, I would have known it was a little tricky to find and inside a cardiology clinic. Don't be like me, who drove around for awhile before having to pull over and actually read the details of how to get to his place. When you walk in, you'll immediately find yourself in a doctor's office waiting room. But there are signs telling you how to get to the restaurant. I made it to the restaurant and started reading the menu. I was quickly greeted by culinary professionals busy making raw dishes. I was encouraged me to get the special-vegan meatballs with kale and spinach salad and corn. DELICIOUS! So much flavor, so much high quality food! The meatballs were just the right kind of spicy. While I was eating, I started reading about the story of the restaurant. Dr. Montgomery, the cardiologist who runs the clinic, started Garden Kitchen and is one of the few MDs who wants to heal people's heart related illnesses with food instead of drugs. A restaurant in a doctor's office...first time I've seen this type of setup. The inconspicuous building is easy missed off Highway 90 if you're not actively looking for it. The food is prepared fresh when you order and all the ingredients are 100% organic with most menu items also being vegan + gluten free. Tastes-wise, I thought the food was alright. It was somewhere in the middle between "this tastes interesting" and "I've had a lot better." It sucks that everything gets compared to something else that's similar but that's how my brain works and I've better wraps at several other places. However, if I was in the area or passing by this place, now that I know about it, i would definitely stop by again. They have a pretty robust menu that has something that should appeal to almost anyone who likes this type of food. At first, I had trouble finding this place because the GPS sent me to the wrong side of Main Street. It's located inside of Houston Cardiac Association by the carwash near Bellfort. Once I walked past the reception desk, however, there it was. It's such a cute little café. The foods here are delicious. I am by no means a raw vegan but the chefs do not hold back on taste. I had some of their picante sauce with corn chips. And it blew me away! I thought it was gonna be bland. I decided to try the key lime pie for dessert. It turns out raw pie is good too! (who knew?) The area is very clean and small. Its confusing at first when you enter because it's not your everyday commercialized food place. Also we had the Baby spinach Portobello wrap, this one came with a salad with a very delicious herb de provence dressing which I've never tasted before anywhere and it was so freaking good, and also was accompanied with fresh corn. I stopped by Garden Kitchen on Saturday. My intention was to get a healthy drink for my system. Well, about the time I got there, I had drank coffee, water, and a diet fresh squeezed lemonade, so in arriving here, I opted to simply purchase a new food item and return another day to get a juice or smoothie drink selection. I left there with breakfast bars, I had intended to use as a snack too. I sliced one bar in squares as a treat and ate the other one as a breakfast snack the next day. Now, if you're used to granola bars at the store, no, this is not that kind. Keep in mind, this is a "vegan" kitchen. I thought the bars were good, reminding me of lite brown golden bricks. They were packed with fruit and natural nutritional ingredients designed to satisfy your hunger. Now, if you want more than 2 in a container for the price, pick up a box at the grocery store, you will get 4 to 6 of the regular ones. Certain vegan foods are more costly to prepare. Sigh....giving this place 2 stars solely based on trying to actually GET to the restaurant. I was looking for a vegan spot to try and came across this restaurant on Yelp. It was a little bit of a drive for me for lunch. But the photos and menu looked enticing. I put the location into my GPS and followed directions...looking for the sign (in the photos) and saw nothing. I pulled into the parking lot, checked the address..yep...right address, but no indication of a restaurant. I called to verify the address (thinking perhaps they have just moved). Nope...right address, right location...just no signage outside. Okay, a car pulls out of an unmarked legit parking space; I pull in and jump out of my car only to be greeted by some parking lot security person telling me that I was parked in someone's space. Um? Excuse me...but I do not see any sign or indication that this space is reserved...nothing! So, my take...this place is clearly good for people who are already customers. But not for new customers who may not actually know where they are located and may not know the unwritten and unadvertised parking rules I just took me and my car somewhere else for lunch. read more

The original Genesis 1:29 restaurant allowed a man to live 930 years. He ate fresh, organic, freshly picked fruit and vegetables at EACH meal. The Garden Kitchen doesn't freshly pick the food they serve, but close to it. That is worth the price. Every ounce of every bite of food nourishes, protects, or cleanses. This is the only restaurant I know where you go for nourishment AND taste primarily. And, you can purchase first rate supplements, supplements that are almost unique in their ingredient profile. They are of clinical quality that is extremely high above market quality. If you want to go to a restaurant that will heal and cleanse you at the dining table, this is the best choice in Texas, nay, the USA. My sister and I tried Garden Kitchen tonight for the first time. The Garden Kitchen is located within the Montgomery Heart and Wellness health facility and is open to the general public. The restaurant is the creation of Dr. Baxter Montgomery, a cardiologist who has developed a raw food, vegan diet, because he feels that many health issues are the result of a poor diet. I have a variety of health issues, and have been seeking healthier places to go out to eat, so I was really excited to find the Garden Kitchen so close to our home. We tried a variety of dishes and found most of them to be very good and flavorful. We started with the Sloppy Joe, which was a very flavorful mixture of red onion, red bell pepper, portobello mushroom, garlic, chili stuffed between romaine leaves This was the "pasta" marinara and it was the only disappointment. The pasta was carrot, daikon and zucchini tri-color noodles topped with marinated mushroom, served with five-spice sauce. It was a bitter dish, and when I mentioned it to the chef, he said, "it will be fixed." I really liked that they were receptive to the critique. Our favorite dish was the Vietnamese Spring Roll which was much like a traditional spring roll, but filled solely with mixed greens, bean sprouts, shredded carrots, mint, and basil wrapped in a rice wrap served with "peanut sauce," a sauce that is tahini based and wonderfully garlicky. It was DELICIOUS!! We finished the meal by splitting a piece of key lime pie, which consists of a frozen mixture of avocado and lime in an oat-date crust. It is not your typical key lime pie, but it is tasty and feels healthier than the traditional desert. We will definitely be going back and I have a feeling that I will be enjoying my lunches during the work week from Garden Kitchen, now that I know how close it is to work, as well as home. read more

The MD, Dr. Baxter Montgomery is the sweetest gentleman, you'd never realize he's from the Western Medical Establishment...and his concept of how to eat to cure your diseases and ailments is great. I perused through his books, also for sale in his cafe, and he's got the big picture...kudos Dr. Baxter! The cafe staff are great! I love the head raw chef, who went to culinary school and decided that playing with raw food was better than all this cooked stuff! There are no nuts in the dishes, hallelujah! Finally, a raw vegan (almost completely raw, they do have some cooked soups) that totally nixes nuts...only seeds are allowed in the dishes. I love the Thanksgiving turkey slices, made with portobella mushroom. The wraps are tasty, the salads huge, the Caesar salad I swear tasted like a caesar salad. I became obsessed with the corn chips, I know, bad Esther...Key lime pie was sooo good....mmm....finally raw vegan key lime pie without NUTS! Finally, all ingredients are organic! Wow! And the prices are so reasonable, your wallet won't hurt after you eat at Garden Kitchen! Another reason I want to move to Houston - I can eat out daily and not go broke - can't say that about NYC. You have to go and check it out, but the GPS won't give you the right directions...it's hidden inside the medical complex, and unless you call and get directions, expect to get lost... By far my favorite raw food restaurant in Houston! The service has always been great and so are the prices. The portions could be bigger on some items but I have always found them to be very well priced for the portions. They have the largest variety of raw foods in Houston that I know of and most of the food is prepared fresh to order. My only complain is that they run out of items sometimes, not really a complain but it should be expected. If you make only the freshest food then it is bound to happen. I started going there before the new chef, is use to be an Asian girl who designed the original menu. I believe she was the one that inspired a lot of the raw dishes as an approach to a healthier way to treat patients. She is no longer there but the new chef is super friendly and makes some pretty tasty creations. I was very excited to find a plant-based, raw place to eat. I didn't mind the drive at all, however, the service was way below average. Half of the items on their menu were not available (then why are they on the menu?), making it very difficult for us to choose what we wanted. Prior to driving there, we tried to call to make sure they were open and serving. No answer - we even called again while we were in the restaurant area and did not hear a phone ring. Side note, the food was good (if you're ok with raw food) but extremely pricey. Stumbled on this gem by accident while in the area waiting for my car oil change. This place has a solid vegan and raw menu, and the food is prepared well and offered at a very modest price. Don't come here expecting a restaurant experience, its more like eating in the kitchen of a friend or family member's house. I really am impressed by what these doctors are doing here, and its a really remarkable idea.
