Finally got there for lunch today and the food was delicious! They have a daily soup, today's white bean was delectable, very balanced and perfectly flavored. I also had a raw tahini spinach wrap which was beautiful, and a strawberry lemonade that was just killer! Little chunks of strawberries floating in the bottom, not too sweet and not too tart--just perfect. The environment, the service and the staff were a little...weird. It really wasn't very welcoming. I also woke up feeling adventurous and needing to try something new! The Garden Kitchen popped up on my Yelp search for "vegan" restaurants for the first time, so I just decided to seize the opportunity. Located inside of a cardiology center along the 610 freeway, The Garden Kitchen is difficult to find and drive up to. Once I completed three U-turns after committing several boo boos on my way to the place, I walked into The Garden Kitchen and encountered friendly employees. I placed a to-go order for the build-your own pasta, which is made of raw zucchini noodles, with marinara sauce and the following toppings: carrots, portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach. I was super impressed by how fresh the vegetables were and the tenderness of the zucchini noodles. I was expecting them to be stiff and tough, but they were stringy and flexible like noodles! Just imagine very cold, crunchy, fresh pasta... I know it's probably difficult to imagine, but that's what the noodles were like. I enjoyed the marinara sauce for the first half of the pasta bowl but during the second half of my meal, my stomach started to turn. There were far too many fennel seeds in the sauce and the intense flavor of them made me feel sick. I managed to eat most of the pasta after picking out the fennel seeds, but felt genuinely nauseous. Ick!! On to dessert... there's always room for dessert.... The Key lime pie was pretty out of this world. It actually made the pasta seem really bad in comparison and I wish I would have ordered three slices of this pie to constitute a meal instead. The oat-date crust spotlighted the comforting flavor of oatmeal, but the sweet avocado filling was the true celebrity here. The filling was tart, tangy, refreshing, and difficult to stop devouring! I don't know if I would try other food at The Garden Kitchen but I would surely come back for the key lime pie. It's cool that Houston offers restaurant choices for vegans and raw vegans. I don't particularly recommend the pasta, but ordering the key lime pie for dessert should be a requirement for anyone who dines at The Garden Kitchen! read more

I finally made it over here. I am currently doing a 30 day predominantly raw detox so I seek a variety on occasion. The raw pizza was amazing, came with a salad and a soup, under $10. So I picked up a few things to last me a day or 2. The strawberry lemonade was heavenly. The dehydrated corn chips are yummy with guac to give me that crunch I miss a little while cleansing. The only thing I would have changed would be the few items I was interested in when I arrived, per I had searched the online menu prior to arriving, was that they were out of them. I am not a raw vegan, or a vegan. The food had a lot of flavor even thought it was raw. I got the raw pizza, which had a tomato-sunflower seed crust topped with marinara sauce, mushrooms, spinach, and pepperoni. The crust was very hard to bite, which made the whole pizza hard to eat. Although, the sauce had good flavor. The chips and guacamole were really delicious, especially since they make the chips. The corn chips had a nice blend between sweet and spicy. We are visiting from LA and weren't expecting to find vegan food so easily. I typed "vegan" into Yelp and we were on our way. We thought we were in the wrong place at first as we entered a hospital type area, but when we found the little cafe in the back it made it all the more interesting. As soon as I started reading their mission statement above their menu I was in love with the whole concept. This is a concept by a doctor who believes in getting his patients off medications and curing them long term by teaching them to eat right. They also have a boot camp. All of this just shows to me that this guy really cares about his patients long term. We ordered Nori rolls to start which were amazing! After that I couldn't wait for my food to arrive. I ordered a paradise burger and my boyfriend ordered a special burger that Derrick had created that day. Here is how I described the food as I was eating it..."The lettuce tasted so fresh as if I lived in the movie 'A Land Before Time 'and came upon pure untouched food."In fact, I never knew lettuce had so much flavor until I checked out the Garden Kitchen. Derrick the chef was amazing, he gave us a taste of his special Gumbo soup and it was amazing! This is an exciting concept that in our new era of public healthcare I hope becomes a norm. This delicious raw vegan cafe is located inside of cardiologist Dr. Baxter Montgomery's Heart and Wellness Center. It really surprised my husband and I to arrive at an office building and walk through the patient lobby(our toddler liked the big fish tank) and enter a small but comfortable dining area. we placed our order with the friendly staff member at a window before seating ourselves. They didn't have highchairs, but our toddler was being agreeable so it wasn't a problem. After about 5 minutes we realized we had to ask for water but it was promptly served as soon as we did, and it tasted like spring or filtered water! Absolutely a plus! Our food didn't take long to arrive either. I had the Baby Portabello and Spinach Wrap, and for $8.97 it was a tremendous value! The delicious wrapper was coconut based and held together tasty marinated mushroom and spinach bits very nicely, even being in our toddler's eager little hands without falling apart. Included with the wrap was a mixed greens salad that was generous for being on the side and came with a tangy-sweet herbed dressing on the side, too. The real attraction on my plate were the corn chips! They were crunchy and flavorful,and we ended up buying two bags more to eat with our meal and take to go. This entire meal of mine was raw vegan, as was my husband's Raw Chili, $5.29 for a 12 oz bowl. The Chili was good, with a thick, hearty texture, and fortunately we had experienced the corn chips from my meal to complement it. Otherwise it would have lacked what I think of as the 'true' chili experience with crunchy crackers or Fritos. It's funny how even though I don't wish to indulge often in the S.A.Diet at this point in my life I still get really excited when a raw vegan dish will remind me fondly of something I used to eat, and these corn chips were definitely like Cool Ranch Doritos but infinitely better tasting and nutritional. I'm glad there was no oil used to make them, Dr. Montgomery has improved even the raw vegan recipes by not using certain high-fat ingredients like nuts or oil. This is the first raw vegan restaurant I have been to that doesn't use nuts or oil, and I find that is very noble of the Garden Kitchen to not compromise the healthful nature of the food for the sake of the flavor nuts and oil bring. The chefs of the Garden Kitchen really have high quality recipes so we didn't miss anything from our meals. My only disappointment with our food was my husband's Garden Burger. Since he's new to raw foods, he didn't notice the Ezekiel bun in the menu description as being not a raw food, but actually a store-bought cooked bread. And while it can be an acceptable, nutrient-dense transitional food, I thought charging $5.99 for an Ezekiel bun with only mixed greens, tomato and condiments (which may have not been raw either) was way too much! Especially when there was no 'burger' patty included. The menu description was not specific enough to inform us of this, it would have been more accurate to call this a Lettuce Sandwich. My husband looked at what I had and said he should have let me order for him. He was not disappointed in the flavor of his Lettuce Sandwich. But this is the only reason I did not award the Garden Kitchen five stars, (I give it four and three-quarters) because we really enjoyed everything else about our meal experience at this progressive little place where 'dee-LISH-ous!!' and 'good for you' are not mutually exclusive concepts. I think it's crucial to enjoy what we eat, that is what will lead us to make good choices and I'm beyond excited that the Garden Kitchen serves such delightfully tasty food in the context of a very enlightened doctor's practice of 'prescribing' food for his patients. I will be honest that I still have yet to really learn about Dr. Montgomery but I do want my review to convey that I believe he and his staff have much wisdom and integrity for being maybe the first medical establishment to offer a restaurant that is consistent with its purpose of improving the health of its clients through diet rather than pills. When Big Pharmaceutical Brother pays doctors to make more money off sick people taking their products, I really cannot express enough how fortunate and excited I am to have discovered Dr. Montgomery and his wonderful Garden Kitchen!! And it's just minutes from my parents' home, so I know we will returning every time we are in town for a visit. read more

I went here for the first time yesterday and we ordered several meals. They don't look that great at first but tastes great! However, this restaurant fits my needs as a raw vegan restaurant and their menu has a really nice variety. I tried a sample of chocolate brownie and it was my favorite! Horrible experience!!! Please do not get scammed out of your hard earned money. Purchased a meal plan, only to arrive to pick up my meals, which were not ready at the time requested. Once I arrived home, almost an hour and half later, I confirmed several of my food orders were missing. When I called to inquire about my missing food items, I was told they were out of those items. No one bothered to let me know before picking up my meals and or offer other options. The food was not fresh as expected and when I complained to the doctors right hand lady, she said I agree we've had some issues and are in the process of revamping our kitchen. We apologize, but no refund, since I signed their agreement. Well I i did sign the agreement; however the kitchen didn't keep their part of their agreement. I was their to pick up my food as expected and never received good service. I can't complain about the staff, they were always friendly and professional, but lacked good customer service skills. They blamed the lack of service and freshness of food due to an influx of unexpected customers. Very serious about my health and ready to transition to a raw vegan diet, this left me very disappointed. Not only did I buy this meal plan, but several of my co-workers joined me on this journey and all had the same experience. Very great idea, but not ready to meet the demand. This left a very bad taste in my mouth and will not recommend this to anyone. No refund to this day; however I can say that our local news station KHOU11 has become interested in posting a story of my experience. Maybe then will they consider giving me a refund for the meals I canceled. I will also be writing to the health department and the medical board. Please don't waste your time here, because I know you can find food fresh else where. read more

I just found this fabulous food this past week while on a business trip to Houston. I googled raw and vegan foods close to me...it sent me to this building (A doctors practice, cool) that at first I thought was the wrong location, but then I saw a glimpse of the Garden Kitchen sign. I walked inside the and asked if they knew where this raw food kitchen was? The staff was so nice and said, "right through that door". I was both surprised and excited to see the little cafe and kitchen. Plenty of room with several tables and a window to talk to the chefs...nice touch. The young lady that helped me to order at the order window was helpful and had a personal personality which I liked. Being a raw food enthusiast made this place a Raw Food Heaven!!! The young ladies helping me was so helpful and gracious. I ordered so much food for lunch and to take with me and share with my friend. The next day, I went back and got more and then on my last day to leave, I went back and got more to take home with me. My favorite is the pure fresh coconut water!! No more hacking coconuts! The Key Lime pie..... yum...to live for and the Tahini Spinach Wrap was over the top good. I did not get to try the Brownie which I was hoping to do on the last day...but they were not ready :-( The Raw Chili was really good with the chips...I later put it on zucchini noodles with the Corn Salad and crumbled chips...so good. The best thing about this place other then the great food and staff was the easy pocket book price. Raw food can be very expensive but I was surprised it was affordable here. I plan to visit every trip to Houston every month to stock up. Maybe the Brownie next time:-) I think this menu is set for people who want to eat raw everyday (levels)...it is good and it's simple too. So, if raw food is for you, like it is for me...then this place has really great food for you to take home and to make life easier...like the 1/2 gallon coconut water, sweet corn chips, deserts, dressings, and some fun chili and corn salads that you can use to create some of your own great food at home. My family of 6 and I have a tradition of going out to eat for our birthdays. Since today was my birthday, I got to pick, so of course, I picked something super healthy for all of us! We ordered the large guacamole and a large bag of chips, which was phenomenal. The kids ordered a huge raw chili, which they loved and I also tasted and was so surprised at the taste. My oldest ordered the 5&3 pasta, which was so tasty. I ordered the baby spinach and portobello wrap. I really enjoyed it, but was a little surprised by the taste of soy sauce. It may have been something other than soy sauce, but I was just expecting something different. Still, it was very good, and I would order it again. My hubs ordered a sandwich that wasn't on the menu, and he loved it. It had sun dried tomatoes and mushrooms. I got to try it and I really liked it too! Because it was my birthday, I got to indulge in the brownie and it was so rich I couldn't even finish it, but that's ok because it just means i get more tomorrow. One really cool thing I learned while we were there was that every other friday they have samplings and on the alternate fridays they have a mediterranean or mexican theme in their preparations! I've come to the Garden Kitchen a number of times. A typical order from me is a smoothie, guacamole taco and spring rolls. In the past when I've come to the kitchen I'm generally greeted by the friendly kitchen staffers but this time was different and not in a good way. I went up to the counter with a sign that said all orders are to be placed at the next window ( I guess they don't want us talking to the kitchen staff anymore) I said okay that's fine I'm greeted by a woman in medical scrubs which confused me because I'm in the restaurant part. She made me feel rushed and stressed the point of placing the order with her making me feel like I couldn't even say hello to the staff whom I generally speak to. Really soured the experience. The atmosphere has changed in the kitchen. In the past they did a great job of making it feel like a restaurant and not a cafeteria but the vibe I felt was more of a cafeteria than anything. The staff that I'm used to was quiet they spoke but that was it. They are usually so lively and a joy to talk to. The food was okay. They always say great service can makeup for okay food. This isn't the case anymore . If I do come back it'll be Togo so I can get in and out. read more

I've been to The Garden Kitchen many times. It's amazing. While inside a doctor's office, it still retains its own identity. The food is reasonably priced, tasty, and exceedingly healthy. Many entrees are raw with all the vitamins and other nutrients present. I love the Soho Salad with their Creamy Garlic dressing. They have super smoothies. The Key Lime pie is unusually good. What I really like is that they are always coming up with innovative new recipes. The staff goes "all out" to please you and they always have some kind of promotion going on which helps the pocketbook. They are close to Houston's famed Medical Center which is great for a quick lunch or to pick up supper on the way home (after seeing your doctor and promising once again to watch what you eat). It's easy to call ahead and schedule when you want to pick it up or stay and enjoy the ambiance. For those seeking to keep those New Years Resolutions to lose weight and eat healthier, you have a tremendous resource available in The Garden Kitchen. read more
