Thanks to Yelp Elite Andy V for sharing and reviewing this place. Can't believe they've been there for so long (50 years!) and we'd never been. This strip of places on the north side of the street was, however, familiar to us -- we'd been to the market here, to the "American restaurant" which is Spanish and awhile back to the hot dog place (now closed) with only 2 seats under an umbrella on the sidewalk! As Andy mentioned, the restaurant is connected to the pharmacy; But there's now a separate entrance. I can picture that it must have been a drugstore with a luncheonette counter in the old days before the dividers went up -- and before they expanded to the area next store and added more tables/booths. They were quite busy at lunch time, but we found a couple seats at the counter. Service was great. Think friendly and fast with lots of personality. They get a lot of regulars and seem to remember their names along with their favorite drinks and "usual" orders, too. But even if you aren't a regular, and it's your first time here like us, you'll still get good service. They have an extensive lunch menu with lots of your favorite diner offerings plus blackboard specials of the day. The kitchen was busy pumping out the orders -- no slackers there either. I ordered (off the menu) an open faced Turkey plate. It came with a choice of veg -- corn or green beans. The serving was huge. Lots of sliced white meat turkey and a mound of mashed potatoes covered in yellow (chicken) gravy. They even gave me cranberry sauce too. I did take some of it home --- for dinner, later. My husband ordered (from the board), the meatloaf special. He got green beans, mashed potatoes and a ton of savory brown gravy over two large pieces of meatloaf. He said it was very good. Their pies are made in house. After watching several servings go by to some guys at the end of the counter, we couldn't resist sharing a piece. I was fascinated by their cutting grid that they put over each piece to score it into eight wedges. After scoring, they sprinkle on (by hand) walnuts on each slice. We tried their banana cream. The topping tasted like cool whip, but the filling and bottom pie crust were very good. And added note is that prices here are very reasonable -- especially for the size of the portions. Blue plate special kind of place that I just love. Garden Restaurant is a hidden gem that I almost don't want to write about because I don't want many more people finding out about it because it took me eons to realize where it was. It's a small diner attached to the Garden Drug pharmacy. It has the most lovely wait staff and cashier. It's typical diner fare. Every time I come here I feel like I'm back home. It just has that welcoming feel to it. I love their omelettes. I typically get their Denver or Farmers omelette which my hash browns well done. Prices are cheap and the portions are hearty. I never left this place feeling remotely hungry. They take cash or card as well. The place is super clean and there are dividers between the booths to help with social distancing. They are doing their part to keep us safe. Garden Restaurant is probably my favorite diner in the area. Definitely worth checking out for breakfast. read more

Pros: -coffee was okay (american coffee) -food was quick -cool that it was a hidden diner in a pharmacy, decorations were nice -bacon egg and cheese was a 7/10, safest option Cons: -food was very mid (or mediocre for anyone over 30) -eggs benedict had no flavor -presentation of the food was not good, i know it's really about the taste but the look was off-putting -waitress a little rushy, but she was overall nice -the silverware had spots on it, the dishes didn't seem to be that clean. the cups were plastic and had a smell. -the place was a little dark *keep in mind that we are Latino people that visited, so everything was mediocre compared to the food and flavors we are used to. if your vibe is 1950's hole-in-the-wall diners with "homey-food" then this could be for you. this place was just not for us. read more

I came here with my parents and husband for brunch on a Saturday. This is your pretty standard diner vibes, very sweet staff and happy to accomodate any requests. The food itself will not knock your socks off, but if you are just ordering something simple like an ommellete, you'll be good! The Garden resturant is located in a small storefront strip front so depending on the time of day you go, parking may be an issue. We had to circle once in order to find a spot. The brisket was dry and over salted. The one side that it comes ( beets) are 1/2 half dollar sized wedges that are straight out of a can. I couldnt finish the brisket. People in the restaurant industry work hard, so i dont like to complain. This place is old school drugstore dining, but thats not enough. The brisket and tea topped out at $18,00 and change. After the tip, youre out the door at $21.00 and looking for another place to eat. Maybe the breakfasts are better, but this brisket meal was 2/5 stars and Ill never go back. Garden Diner seems to be a hot spot for the retiree crowd. Maybe the reason is the servers are very friendly and warm which is a plus. Garden also has its specials and you are able to choose hash potatoes or grits. They also make their own biscuits which is so much better than your standard toast. read more

Was finishing up an inspection in Oakland Park and found this little gem of a diner. A true throwback to the old days in Ohio and Pennsylvania. There is an adjacent Pharmacy on premises. The counter service is absolutely a time capsule. My co-worker order a cold turkey sandwich and fries and I had my penchant for a toasted rye with tuna salad and L&T fulfilled. The sandwich's were spot on DINER food and tasty. The steak fries were super crispy and hot and the coffee was good too. The waitresses were all smiles and absolutely wonderful. This is a great little diner that isn't going away anytime soon, so GO! A must. read more

At first, I was a bit uncertain of the GR given its adjacent position to the pharmacy. But the service was lovely and on point, the food was great with plenty of classic diner options, and the atmosphere actually felt both homey and spacious. Totally recommend! read more

I have posted before for breakfast but not lunch. I love this place! The food is homemade the prices are great and the service is fantastic. This little get has daily lunch specials. The fish and chips (cod) for $11.99 is second to none. The fish is cooked perfectly and sweet and flakey with more than I can eat. The meatloaf special as well on Fridays is just delicious. Come try the daily lunch specials and for breakfast the biscuits and gravy is the best around. read more

There is a lot to like about Garden Restaurant. It has plenty of free parking and one of the things that first struck my eye when entering was that everything was spotless as well as glisteningly clean. Though basically a breakfast and lunch with a more diner like than restaurant atmosphere the wait staff are all smiley, effervescent, of good attitude, spirit and fun. The menu and food offerings are rather diner typical with nothing out of the general norm, exotic or surprising, but everything I've had here has been very good. When you go here, be sure to check the board for specials as they usually have an offering for four or five for the day. On my most recent visit I had their Cornbeef Hash and Egg, more than reasonably priced at $8.56 (strange number), and about as tasty and nicely done as you'll ever find. read more

Definitely a solid place to eat breakfast at. (Note we've only tried breakfast so far.) I had the eggs Benedict and hash browns which were very tasty. We also had the French Toast with eggs and bacon which again were all tasty. Our only thought would be to add maybe some cinnamon or vanilla to the French Toast batter to give them a little more flavor but that's really our only critique. The service was great. Super nice people from the time we walked in till we left. The price point was also very reasonable. $20 total for two breakfast's with drinks. I'm looking forward to trying out their lunch menu. read more

Had the meatloaf today. Can't believe they were able to slice it as thin as did without it falling apart...smothered in gravy. Had to scrape the gravy off. Terrible. Wanted a side of onion rings. The outside you wouldn't think there is a cute little diner, but there is an adorable little place inside a convenient store! Sadly, I can't have eggs anymore so going to diners is hard. I got a pancake, hash browns, and a side of bacon. I can't stand places that tell me no I can't have just one pancake. This place said OF COURSE YOU CAN! Yup, that's why I love this place. I could barely finish the one little pancake. It was yummy! The hash browns were good. The bacon was ok. The waitresses were so sweet! A happy and nice waitress/waiter is the best. You instantly smile when they are in a good mood! My dad got the eggs, sausage, potatoes, and biscuits with gravy! HE enjoyed it very much! My uncle got an omelette and said it was good. Classic old school diner with counter service and plenty of booths. There are both daily breakfast and lunch specials with multiple selections to choose from. Breakfast is served all day. Soups are made on site with usually 3 to choose from everyday and are delicious. My favorites include hearty and rich Pepper Pot and Beef Barley along with a Chicken Noodle with lots of tender shredded chicken. Friday Fish & Chips are some of the best I've had. Other specials might be Roast Turkey Leg with Dressing, Beef Stroganoff, Stuffed Pork Chop, Corned Beef and Cabbage. The Pot Roast is always tender and flavorful. Save room for dessert which are baked on premises: fruit and cream pies and moist cakes. If you are lucky to come when they bake Brownies make sure to take some home. I went to this restaurant today on my lunch. I thought it would be great for a fast diner style lunch. I walked in and sat myself. They were busy enough so I understood when it took my waitress 5 minutes to bring me a menu. Another 5 minutes I had something to drink but then... my waitress never came back. She was busy helping everyone else and seemed to be working the lunch rush by herself. At this point I'm more frustrated than upset. When I did get upset was when my waitress waited on a couple that came in 15 minutes after I did, that were obviously her "regulars" as she spoke to them by name. No, I didn't cause a scene. I even left the money on the table for my drink. I quietly left. It's sad because I was really looking forward to eating here and putting it on my lunch list. The restaurant was clean and they had a good menu. It seemed as if everyone was enjoying their meals. That really doesn't matter though when service is substandard. read more

This place was so good. You kind of miss it if you don't know it's there. Which I guess is it's appeal. On one side is a pharmacy and other side is a diner. It's right down the street from two other restaurants to that are probably just as good. Service was great food was great and I would definitely go back again. Budget was around what I expected topay people for breakfast $24 dollars something like that not bad. We were both members of The Clean Plate and was still able to walk around after that. I'd be surprised if any of the food here arrived on a frozen food truck like so many other greasy spoons/diners in this area. Everything is fresh here though and made in house, including amazing biscuits and gravy. Shirley was our server and she was friendly and helpful to us first-timers. My family had a private birthday party here for 40 people last night and it was fabulous! The food was delicious! We had a set menu choice of Chicken Parmesan with pasta and garlic bread, roasted turkey with stuffing and gravy, and meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. All was superb and the price was incredibly reasonable. Carlos and Maria, the owners, did an outstanding job and Shirley is the best waitress in town! I highly recommend this restaurant for breakfast and lunch as they are closed for dinner unless you do a private party. The location is in an old drug store and will remind you of the 1950's.
