I have been to the Mason Jar before and was not Wowed by the food. It was a Chicken Pot Pie and had way too many potatoes. (Other reviews agree with me). Tonight I tried a special which was a Ribsteak with two sides. This was wonderful. The meat was tender and prepared nicely. The restaurant easily held out reservation for eight people and sat us promptly. Portions are abundant and our entire group enjoyed their meals. For dessert I ordered a Key Lime Pie which was a large slice that I shred with a friend. read more

First time at Mason Jar and it I thought it was really just average or maybe lower. The staff is friendly and welcoming and seating is comfortable but the restaurant can benefit from a refresh and it really might be time to paint. Prices are fair and entrees come with two sides but unfortunately I selected fries for one of my choices and I didn't know it was going to be the dreaded shoe string fries and perhaps my dislike is just a preference issue. However a Mac and Cheese side was no better and was overcooked and flavorless. I made the mistake of getting the Pasta with Shrimp and Scallops and it was pretty bad and I left it after trying one dry rubbery shrimp. The menu has many traditional comfort food staples and this probably was the last item on the menu that I should have ordered. A Salmon item was better and though it seemed like it was from the same corporate distribution company that many other South Florida restaurants use - at least it was prepared differently and it was fine. It felt like a southern cafe with a relaxed vibe and not overly decorated. Most of the menu were comfort foods at decent prices. Sat at the coffee counter and ordered the Tomato Blue Cheese & Bacon Soup. Noticed that the waitress still used an old school method of handwriting my order on a pad. Upon request the waitress gave me extra bacon pieces to float on top of the soup. Every spoonful provided a blast of extrordinary flavor. Stopped in for lunch and what a quaint little place! Service was fast and they were so attentive to every need. And the food...unbelievably fresh and delicious! Tomato soup with Gorgonzola and bacon, fried green tomatoes and the short rib sandwich (without the bread) made for a delicious lunch. I highly recommend but I hope not too many people flood this place because I don't want to get shut out next time I go, lol. read more

I let myself eat fried chicken only once a year. It's not the healthiest, but it tastes so good! I always go to The Mason Jar for fried chicken. It's a 5 star, no debate! I have Aunt Bee's fried chicken recipe, but frankly, The Mason Jar does it better. It's flaky, very moist, not overly greasy and is a very large portion because they give you BOTH sides of the breast. Fantastic! The white country gravy is thick and warm. It's nicely flavored with a little nutmeg. My two sides were brussel sprouts and Mac and Cheese. The brussels were tender, light and flavorful. The Mac and Cheese was really nice with a white cheese. Really good sides! The wine list is nice. The decor is cute like grandma's house. The servers are wonderfully sweet ladies who love their jobs. It shows. There is little staff turnover at this place. Prices are extremely reasonable. Other dishes are great here too. But you have to try the fried chicken breast at least once!! read more

This is a lovely "feel at home" type of restaurant. The staff is experienced and attentive. Make a reservation to ensure a table. We went on Monday (federal holiday) and the place was packed and busily both at lunch and dinner. The food is well prepared and seasoned with generous serving. We ordered the meatloaf, chicken pot pie, and burger to sample a bit of everything. Unfortunately, the chicken pot pie had a sour taste -- I'm hoping it was from some type of cooking wine and not because it was spoiled -- but either way, I couldn't eat it. The meatloaf and burger were decent, but the real highlights were the sides. The mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were creamy and flavorful, and I also really enjoyed the crispy shoestring fries. The prices are fair, though there's an added fee if you pay by card. However, this spot isn't very kid-friendly -- one of the staff members politely asked us to quiet our baby, which made me feel uncomfortable. Located at Federal/Oakland Park, the Mason Jar folks are serving up some serious cuisine at dare I say modest prices. It's not glitzy or glamorous instead quaint & cozy, providing free parking and table/booth seating. We got the 5:30pm opening reservation. This is a no-nonsense type of restaurant, where everything's made from scratch while focusing on comfort food. To be clear, they are not re-inventing classics, rather they are executing tradition. The 4 of us enjoyed caesar salad, french onion soup and they had me at mushroom which was the soup du jour. Our mains: light & bright pistachio crusted salmon w/tangerine beurre blanc, hearty short ribs, savory rack of lamb, and the blackboard special pork osso bucco. All the entrees were fork tender bites of goodness and each came with 2 complimenting sides so we picked mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, shoe string fries, grilled asparagus, green beans, brussel sprouts. The menu is extensive for lunch and dinner. We split an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, a delectable southern dish .... difficult to find on most South Florida menus. Their Chicken Pot pie is large, loaded with delectable vegetables and chicken in a creamy sauce and topped with a light flakey crust. Solid 4 stars, good not great based on one visit by myself. What drew me to this place were the pictures of the French onion soup. It looked so amazing that I absolutely had to try it. It came out hot and the cheese was amazing but the broth was bland, needing salt. The short rib sandwich also was good not great, and the Mac n cheese was just average. Portions were good and the price wasn't terribly expensive. Service was good but a little slow since the maximum capacity of 65 was full. How can this place have been around for so long and I've never heard of it? It's off the beaten path a bit, so you have to keep your eyes peeled, and it's a very small place so reservations are a good idea. We went on a Thursday evening, and got there right when it opened, so we were fine. Try the duck! It's one of my favorite foods anyway, but they do it to perfection. And they serve the iced tea in a mason jar! How cute! The woman who waited on us was as nice as she could be. The food was delicious. The prices are fair. I knew the plaza well and liked it as they have plenty of free parking out front. Once inside very welcoming and inviting as I am lead to a table for two in the next room closer to the bar. Please not beer and wine only. I sat down and ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc which was served by the glass. The menu was extensive with numerous choices. Not sure where the disconnect occurred, but Mason Jar had gone downhill. It used to be SO much better. Our most recent dining experience there was mediocre at best. We felt rushed, as if the staff was hovering over us, clearing plates and hurrying us because of the closing time. The food was another issue. I ordered the salmon WELL, WELL, WELL DONE, and it came out barely cooked. All in all, it is not worth the costs they charge to return. read more

When I go out with friends to dinner at a restaurant that I was told had fantastic "Home Cooking" I expect a lot more of the food and ambience at Mason Jar Café. I ordered the meatloaf...it was more like "bread crumbs and rice loaf"...it was SO overloaded with bread crumbs and rice that there was hardly any meat. When you go to take a slice of a meatloaf and it turns into large crumbles of rice and bread crumbed meat that tastes more like what you would put into stuffed cabbage, something is very WRONG. My friend ordered the Chicken Pot Pie...I had heard so much about this dish...It was a shell of light crust full of POTATOES, olive green peas(fresh ones are very green and have a snap to them as you all well know), there was hardly enough Beschamel sauce to wet it all...and what little chicken was there was mostly all shredded. There were 3 chunks of meat and the carrots were a very thin julienne..they belong in Cole slaw..not round or chunks that gave you any hint of carrot...Sad to say, I had such a weak meal and I'll never recommend or go back.
