Garden State Bagels is the only bagel shop I've been to in San Diego County that wouldn't be razed to the ground in the tri-state area during its first week of operation. This Encinitas strip-mall bagel shop is worth the 50 minute round-trip drive for me from my home -- they have tons of bagel and cream cheese choices, just like the bagel shops of the northeast that I miss dearly. Garden State's bagels are fresh and they've mastered achieving the right density and texture: insides are chewy in the way they should be, outsides are crunchy. For better or worse, attitudes here are appropriately and authentically ornery, except from the teenagers who work here who do a nice job. I've embraced a Californian mindset, even if the surly grown-ups here have not, so my go-to bagel breakfast is the toasted Jalapeño Bagel with Jalapeño Cream Cheese, featuring freshly chopped jalapeño pepper chunks in the cream cheese. I've switched it up a few times and gotten Onion Bagels, Garlic Bagels, and Combination Bagels (i.e. "Everything" Bagels), which are also all good, but I always go back to that same jalapeño cream cheese here. Drip coffee at Garden State Bagels isn't bad and selections include, among others, a Hawaiian Hazelnut Coffee and Kona Coffee that I alternate between. Native Californians don't get this place, and the same can probably be said about transplants that have been out here for too long, hence the mixed reviews. If you've recently lived in an urban area in the northeast, like me, I believe this is as close as you're going to get to that kind of a bagel shop experience in San Diego County. A little place nestled in a strip center. A couple surfboard tables to eat in and a table or two outdoors. Lots of variety for bagel flavors and good self-service coffee. We enjoyed our breakfast and watched big screen TV while we ate in. We had the bagel of the month - cranberry/orange - and a cinnamon raisin. Yum! For a small footprint, they make the most of the space and have a lot of extra items to offer including kid-friendly juices, etc. Love to support the locals and these guys deserve your business. read more

Stopped by to get an egg n cheese bagel nothing special about it. I did like that they cut it in half. My daughter chose the cinnamon stick bagel and was meh. While I was there it got pretty busy and crowded since it is very small inside. I'm from NJ and this is my first bagel in SD since I moved six months ago. Service is good, staff was friendly and prompt. I ordered an everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese. Flavor of the bagel is good but it's too soft and more like a roll compared to authentic NY bagels. Also, I personally would have preferred a LOT more seeds on my everything bagel, this thing had barely anything on it. Same thing with the cream cheese, barely any vegetables in it. Was hoping to get a little bit more for $3.50 but I guess this is normal for around here. Update 4/11/19: I ordered Taylor ham, egg and cheese sandwiches and received the most disgusting crap. The meat was so old it smelled and was gray in color! Eggs were microwaved too. Absolutely unacceptable. What kind of place serves rotten meat!? read more

First I like to support small business so give them a try. I'm a New Yorker so the bagels although good aren't like NY with the thick leathery skin. These are a bit lighter and fluffier and more roll-like than a dense east coast bagel. A little light on the ingredients. For example the everything bagel has a light sprinkling. Terrible. Egg sandwich in a microwave. Luckily they had a garbage outside so I could throw that away. If there was Taylor ham on it it was rancid, or what ever that meat was. Bagels were terrible. I will eat Vons bagels until I can get back east. Good news is they are close to VG doughnuts. To the owner change the name you are not representing well. Would you eat what you serve. This is a long one so in short: food good, service good, go. I love bagels & bagel shop coffee on Saturday. Bagel shop coffee is my fave. I enjoy a good Americano almost every day during the week but a great bagel shop coffee signals it's the weekend. I usually pop by the Einstein's in my neighborhood but the service is so slow. So. Slow. This weekend, I thought I'd go to an Einstein's outside of my neighborhood. Looked them up, most had 2.5 stars. Not interested. So I went 15 minutes up the freeway to check out Garden State Bagels. They had great ratings and I'll always go out of my way for a good experience. It was worth the drive. Small shop, passed by it and had to turn around. Got inside and immediately saw the selection of coffees. Hawaiian Hazelnut. Yes!! Service was the best. Whole team was warm. The owner came out from the kitchen and he had this surfer/bagel guru type energy. Unreal. Only in SD my friends. I had their flavor of the month (orange cranberry) and my bagel date had a plain with peanut butter. The bagels were fantastic friends! Will go back. You should definitely check it out. read more

The ratio of bagel to cream cheese is perfect--they know how to prepare the perfect bagel sandwich. My sister loves their French toast bagel and I usually stick with the everything bagel. My husband and I love this place. He loves it because he says it's the closest to a New York bagel he can get while living in San Diego. I just love their bagels. They have tons of flavors to choose from. I also enjoy the egg sandwich on a bagel. I get mine with cheese, ketchup, salt and pepper. The coffee is good as well. They have a good drink selection. The shop itself is rather small and doesn't have a ton of seating inside but there are some chairs and tables outside. Their coffee is pretty generic so nothing too special there. I stopped her on JUNE 5th sometime in the afternoon as I was waiting for one of the guys who works there finished someone's else order There was an older guy who was sitting down saw me waiting for a few mins get up and proceeded to take my order I then noticed him grabbing the bagels I wanted with out washing his hands and without wearing gloves like are you kidding me That is disgusting. When I was about to say something about that 2 young gals from ages 18-23 came in the older guy started to talk to them and completely ignore me he literally started to talk about sex, Ecstasy, ect... like come on really so unappropriate he then we went and rung them out so he touched the money and again didn't wash his hands proceeded to help someone else again didn't wash his hands after touching the money nor did he put on gloves. Real bagels - not the soft doughy rings of bread shaped like doughnuts that pass for bagels out here. Garden State Bagels has their recipe right - the bagels are authentic, at least relative to the other places in North County. Good bagels also make good sandwiches. For lunch today I had roast beef with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo on a sesame bagel. Plenty of meat and fixins and we didn't have to toast the bagel - it was still hot from the oven. Pretty perfect, right? Garden State Bagels also doesn't just stick exclusively to the old traditional bagel flavors. The peanut butter bagel is my personal fave.
