1 year later! We survived another year of marriage and celebrated in the same spot. Service was fine. We started with the crab cake which was great though more crab than cake. Hubby got the ribeye entree and while he ordered it medium, received it closer to medium-rare, but it was tender, rich, and had lots of gravy. I ordered the salmon which was perfectly done and the roasted vegetables were DELICIOUS. We ended our meal with the chocolate custard split between the two of us. On a trip through Oxford, we desperately wanted a local fresh restaurant and stumbled upon Garfrericks based on Yelp reviews. Their menu was amazingly impressive and the staff was so welcoming. Our server, Morgan, went above and beyond to explain the menu and even offered samples of wines we were trying to decide between at the beginning of the meal. We split a seasonal tomato salad with goat cheese, pea succotash, and balsamic glaze which was a meal highlight as well as a tomato pie. Entrees consumed were scoops and pecan-crusted grouper which were stellar as well. Can't recommend stopping in if you are in the area because the farm to table freshness is impeccable. 5/21/20 The food was so damn delicious! It was my first time eating in a restaurant that is allowed and not being sneaky. My first time having wine outside of my house. I couldn't help but cherish this moment and stayed a little longer. Moments like these matter to the travelers of the world that sometimes can't get bc not around their loved ones all the time. I ordered the pecan encrusted grouper along with a bleu cheese beet salad and a rice blended with veggies. Everything was delicious and fresh and made to order. Originally I got my order for take out only to learn that I could enjoy my meal inside. Which saved me from driving an hour to my hotel to be able to enjoy a meal not in my car another day. Enjoyed every morsel of that bread pudding. I can't believe how much I enjoy that when I rarely eat bread. Anyway come here to eat, support your local restaurants and their employees. WOW as the owner you should look up the word HOSPITALITY or better yet go back to school for a thorough lesson. Anyone reading your response will see your DEFENSIVE demeanor. You were NOT there when it happened so instead of reaching out to me to find out what happened, you just talked to your "CHEF" and came back on a public platform to accuse me of behavior I did not commit? Let me fill you in on a little tidbit I intentionally left out to keep YOUR RESPONSE unbiased. We actually came in for the FIRST time 11/14/2021 after finding your establishment online and we spent $125 on BRUNCH and also spent an additional $40 in the WINE SHOP. (Photos attached) But you wouldn't know that because you never reached out to me, and now I can congratulate you on publicly looking like a piece of you know what... =) Also, just to pour some more salt in the wound, if you look below the garfrericks charge, we spent $110 at effinas the 2 days before. We are used to going out and spending money on nice dinners, so for you to call me out saying "I'm glad you didn't pay", trying to make me look like someone who complained to get out of paying for a check is absolutely ABSURD and LAUGHABLE. I'm sure readers of this review are already starting to connect the dots and there is plenty more "updated review" to go... =) So moving on to address some things you said in your response because you decided to be PETTY and not PROFESSIONAL... I was disturbing your other diners? You mean the 5 other people there on a SATURDAY night?? If the chef actually provided proper customer service and remade the food, it actually wouldn't have gotten to where I had to PARADE my food across the room to a chef yelling at me across the restaurant being yes, GHETTO and LOUD. He CHALLENGED the customer on every point just to prove a point himself and I proved him WRONG! That's not only PETTY but it's also highly CHILDISH. He actually chased us out of the restaurant to have words and I should have called the POLICE on him. You and your establishment are a FAKE and a FRAUD. You own a catering business. Not a restaurant. You are a FAR CRY from a true restauranteur! I actually didn't realize questioning about the size of my steak was verbally abusive?? Please elaborate, oh wait you can't because you weren't there! For your EDUCATION I have searched google to show that steaks DO cook down by 25% but that means to have a 5oz steak in front me me for dinner, you need to be cooking roughly a 6.5oz piece of meat. (Check attached photo) I'm not sure where you learned your chef trade but the menu typically states what IS served at the table. You're not selling me a 5oz piece of raw meat that you cook, you're supposed to serve me a COOKED steak weighing 5oz. The only thing that clearly shows here is that when you cut your steaks, you're actually CUTTING CORNERS because either you are serving a highly FATTY piece of filet , or you're just plain screwing people over on how you cut the pieces, hoping that no one says anything. There are no two ways about it. The steak shouldn't lose 50% of its volume and end up at 2.2oz cooked MEDIUM. The picture doesn't lie and if I can deter X-amount of people from ordering this steak, really out of FEAR of what your UNPROFESSIONAL and PETTY response will be if they actually had an issue with the steak they order, then I have done my job. I don't need anything from you. I've dined at some of the most prestigious steakhouses in the world and your establishment is not even a blip on the radar. I was casually dressed at the bar with a $30,000 watch on my wrist and at NO TIME did I act like I was above anyone at the establishment. I am one of the most humble and kind people you will meet. Your chef escalated the situation to be LOUD and made people start to take notice. Also I would check under your "chefs" fingernails because they were absolutely disgusting when we was speaking to us. Furthermore his "chef" jacket was stained and didn't look clean. If these are the standards that you hold, then it's quite easy to see and understand why this situation ended up coming to this. I have two letters. F & U to this place and to the owner David Garfrerick. You sir are a LOSER! Anyone reading this exchange should DITCH this place and head over to HUBBARDS ON MAIN. Traveling on my 55th birthday with my husband and all four of our adult children, and I really wanted to find somewhere special to share our meal together. Googled "restaurants in Oxford, AL" and found some reviews while driving. Husband didn't want to stop, but I suggested we just take a quick look. Now, we are used to many fine dining options in Atlanta, and the reviews and website caught my attention that Garfrerick's Cafe might be a special place. Serendipity did not disappoint!!!! Chef/Owner Garfrerick graciously accommodated us when I asked if it would be possible to dine without a reservation on what was clearly a reservation-only night, and my birthday became a red-letter memory on my timeline. Our youngest will soon be applying to Culinary Institute of America for chef training, so we frequent farm-to-table fine dining establishments whenever possible. Highest recommendation for Garfrerick's Cafe. Steaks cooked beyond perfection and freshest vegetables ever!! THANK YOU to all the staff for a relaxed, up-scale, but casual, farm-to-table fine dining experience with my family on my birthday!!! In Oxford/Anniston area there aren't many good healthy options. This place offers farm-to-table gourmet check prepared foods, made to your likings. They are willing to alter recipes for those with food allergy and issues as well. Everything is organic. Although it is a very nice environment, it is still casual. I would call it casual upscale dining ednvironment. They have white table cloths and cloth napkins on every table. When I walked in, I was greeted and asked if I had a reservation. I did not but they were able to seat me very quickly. They provided a drink menu with a large variety of wine selections including a section labeled "interesting wines". We discussed with the waitress our preferred tastes and she brought over the manager, who had several options to choose from. She gave samples of 4 different wines and my friend and I chose a bottom to split. We ordered the warm spinach salad as a starter to split; it has sauteed mushrooms, prosciutto and goat cheese. They brought it out on two plates, already split for us, which was very thoughtful. For dinner, I ordered the Redfish over organic grits with cajun cream sauce and snow peas. I inquired about my gluten issue and other sensitivities and they verified the ingredients. I was delighted to find out that the cajun cream sauce was fine for me to have without alterations to the recipe. I don't typically finish my plate but this was worth finishing. It tasted truly devine. The portions are small but certainly satisfying and left me plenty full. Someone who eats a lot regularly might feel it wasn't enough but for my friend and I, we thought it was plenty without being wasteful. Don't bother. I search for places like this when I travel. Farm to table, elevated American cuisine...this is NOT that. The website shows the chef wading through the grass, like he's picking up the vegetables himself, I thought it would be worth a try, I was very wrong. The first clue is the 1970's sign off the main drag pointing you to the "cafe" then you see it's in a strip mall. Walking in you can see a crappy dirty bar and an even worse looking floor behind it. The cooks station is open to view. It looked clean, the servers station next to it is dingy, floor was pretty bad. The places needs Robert Irvine's help in a serious way. Let's get to the food. Optioned the cheese and fruit plate for a starter. Remember here the theme is farm to table, more likely is Kroger to table. The cheese and fruit were slapped on a plate, the presentation was way off. Should be on a board or something special, it was not. The grapes were good, server couldn't identify the cheese, the pecans were not fresh. They were very pliable, and didn't have a crunch. The strawberries were more than likely from a grocery store. They had a very old taste to them. They were not juicy they were not flavorful they just weren't very good. Honey and the grapes were the star of the show, the crackers were stale, soft and we're probably old. Would not recommend ordering us, especially at the price of $17. The pork chop was not on the menu and was advertised as a special, it was overdone charred and had a bitter exterior, not juicy on the inside. It was cooked way too long, it was supposed to be served with a squash, purée and green beans. The squash purée had not been reduced enough, and literally covered the entire plate to the point that the entire entrée was swimming in it. The green beans were cooked way too long. They had the texture that they came out of a can, they were not crisp , all in all it wasn't very good. There was supposed to be a apple chutney on top, Chutneys are typically reduced to have a lot of flavor a little bit of vinegar acid. This was a pile of onions that seem to have been marinated in vinegar almost like a quick pickle, it was not appetizing. All in all this place has seen its day and needs some serious redirecting if it's going to make it. The staff was very very friendly but lack some basic stuff like knowing what's being served, etc. It could be a great spot, and probably was 20 years ago. It needs a serious makeover, some real thought on the execution, and someone to manage the pass and not let substandard food out of the kitchen. The veracity of the 5 star reviews also make me wonder....I can say that what others claim to be "amazing" either haven't been to a great restaurant or have pretty low standards. Terrible, terrible, awful service and treatment. I have been to this restaurant several times, referred it several times to others and that will NEVER happen again. The restaurant is half full, tried to sit at the bar and was told "sorry we can't serve you" others at the bar were ordering food and being served and yet 2 females were turned away. We could have been served and out before it was "too busy" as we were told the reason to be turned away. The most awful experience and will never be back. Don't waste your time and go elsewhere! When we first pulled into the parking lot I wasn't very impressed. But as they say you can't judge a book by its cover neither can you judge this restaurant from the outside. Once we walked into the restaurant it was a very quaint and cozy place. I loved the open kitchen concept and of course the vaulted ceiling with the big ass fan. Everything on the menu looked great! I love sitting at the bar interacting with the chefs as they prepared our meal. This is an excellent little gem in the rough with excellent prices and phenomenal food. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're ever in Anniston or Oxford Alabama. And the service was great as well. I will definitely be coming back to this place. read more

A lovely restaurant that combines rustic with modern elements in their decor, and is friendly to vegetarians and those who want to eat light. The hearty garlic-topped bread with soft butter is a great start, and I really enjoyed my Southern Vegetable Plate, which included Mac-n-Cheese, stewed tomatoes, squash casserole, black-eyed peas, cornbread, and pasta olive tomato salad. A fruity lemonade, complete with refills, topped it off. Way too stuffed to contemplate dessert! Stopped into this place the other day on a trip through Anniston. From the outside of the building I wouldn't have expected to find what I did inside. In a place where a number of people I know have complained about a lack of quality dining options, this place delivers exactly what a foodie needs. They do it surprisingly well, and I'd say that they're up to par with some of the better restaurants around Birmingham. If you need a great meal, with good portion sizes and reasonable prices then this place should definitely be on your list. The interior is very open and has very high ceilings. Overhead is the biggest ceiling fan I've ever seen. It looks a propeller from a massive plane, and moves slowly to keep the air stirring and to distribute the smell of deliciousness throughout the room. There is a well stocked bar with a variety of high end booze to the left, and straight ahead to the back is an open kitchen where you can witness the chef at work. About that...there is definitely a chef in the building. Some places have great cooks, some places have a chef. The menu here is loaded with the sorts of things that only a skilled chef would ever attempt. Broad enough to please everyone without devolving into burgers and chicken strips. Lamb chops, a variety of steaks, some game, excellent seafood choices, and sides that were obviously thought out as part of the meal rather than listed down the edge of the menu as an afterthought. So I started with a cheese board, which wasn't on the current menu, (it does seem that the menu rotates which is nice and keeps things fresh). They gladly accommodated and said they would see what they had and put something together. When it got to the table my expectations were exceeded, (See Image). After working my way though enough cheese to kill a man, I moved on and ordered the lamb with grits, potatoes and mushrooms. My friend ordered the crab cakes. In both cases...WOW. You know that good feeling that you get when your expectations are exceeded? That's how I felt. The lamb was cooked perfectly...tender, juicy and loaded with flavor. The potatoes and grits were above par as well. I'm not a fan of crab cakes, but my friend seemed to like them, and I tried a bit of the sauce that they came with and it was very flavorful. We didn't have room for desert but I'll have to make it a point to save some space the next time I'm there because the desert menu looked pretty amazing. So to summarize...a real live chef in Anniston, hiding in a strip mall cooking up lamb chops and crab cakes and cheese boards and doing a great job of it. Pleasant, super clean interior with a lot of open space and a view of the kitchen. Prices that are more than reasonable given the overall quality of what they're serving...and service that matches the quality of the food. All in all a worthwhile venture. If you haven't been here, don't hesitate to give it a shot. If you have, then go back...the menu rotates. 5 stars. read more

What a hidden gem in Oxford, Alabama. A sleek, warm, upscale venue with divine food. I received a warm handshake and greeting from the owner upon my early (4:30 pm) arrival. He appeared to gently sashay through the restaurant with aplomb. I enjoyed the three stack tomato salad with field peas, feta, balsamic drizzle with a delicious dressing. Succulent. Next came a delicious piece of pecan encrusted grouper served on a bed of tasty rice with tiny chopped vegetables and garlic. The serving was huge and enough for two. Very tasty and piping hot which is stellar. I sat at the chef's counter and enjoyed watching the two chefs make magic. Been meaning to try this place for several years, based on ratings. We had trouble finding entrance (behind Red Lobster off service road). We were seated immediately. Place was half full. Kitchen and food prep area is open air inside the restaurant, which we are not fans of. Husband's Old Fashioned was the size of a thimble, and he was not pleased with it. We ordered crab cake appetizer, and received one, to share. It was very good. Husband's 3-scallop entree was skimpy, more like an appetizer, at best. Served over hand cut corn, which looked and had consistency of milk, and little flavor at all. My red fish entree was good, but the creme brûlée dessert needed a chisel and hammer to break through the hardened sugar on top. I was jabbing at it with my spoon, trying to break through, only to taste what appeared to be Jello Brand vanilla pudding underneath. Over $100 for two people (before tip) for a disappointing meal. My parents have raved over this cute cafe for months, so I was excited to be in town to try it. It was a Wednesday night and they were surprisingly packed. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly loud it was-- as in we all kept having to repeat ourselves because we couldn't hear each other at the table. That's fine-- just a minor inconvenience. Then I realized that out of the 10+ tables that were filled (to include 2 large parties), they had only 2 servers. One of them was also doubling as the hostess. I will give our waitress props because she was doing the best she could while also tending to numerous other tables, making drinks for all of those tables and delivering food/water. She was very accommodating when I couldn't decide on a wine and gave some suggestions based on my likes. Our waitress kept telling us she was going to check on the bread because they were out when we arrived. That told us they were perhaps making fresh bread. When she brought it to the table it was cold and hard as though it were stale. I'm confused what she was waiting on for it to come out like that. Our food was good. Our table had the halibut, lamb, diver scallops and salmon. My mom said the scallops were just okay while previous visits they had been phenomenal. She thought they were undercooked. The creamed corn that comes with it is a showstopper-- we could eat a bowl of just that creamed corn! My dad raved over his halibut. My boyfriend enjoyed his lamb, but the grits they came with were meh. I was weary of getting the salmon since most places either severely over cook it or it comes out like sushi. I did have to send it back as it was definitely on the rare side versus the medium I requested. I'd rather it be undercooked, though, since they can easily fix that. It took a good while to get it back, though, and everyone was at least halfway through their meal while I waited. We had crème brûlée and the bread pudding for dessert. Both were good, but by far not the best I've ever had. The bread pudding is not the typical consistency of most bread puddings, but it had a good taste. Overall, I want to give this place another chance because I think if they had been properly staffed we would've had a much more enjoyable experience. In town and saw the reviews so decided to try... Service was great. Food was okay. Had the rainbow trout and found it under seasoned and there was a fishy smell to it that was slightly off-putting. The quinoa underneath soaked up the fishy taste and smell so altogether did not enjoy the entree, but was edible. There was side vegetables that could use some salt. The Caesar salad was not restaurant quality very salad in a bag style. Had cheesecake that was also ok. The mule I had was great so hats off to the bar. Crab cake appetizer was delicious! The entree of Halibut with grilled pineapple, coconut rice and stir fried veggies, superb. And cheesecake with chocolate sauce was yum. The service was excellent: friendly and helpful. The temperature of the restaurant was very comfortable, not freezing like so many places in Alabama during the summer. No complaints.
