Instead I settled on the Golden Goddess Grilled Chicken Wrap and the Jalapeno Corn Chowder as a starter. I think the chowder was missing a little something flavor wise (not sure what), but it had a nice kick to it and I was satisfied with it overall. Loved the cornbread on the side. The sandwich was great and the crispy potato skin fries were hot, fresh and delicious. The rest of my family inhaled the smoked chicken wings with the Jalapeno Mango glaze as a starter. They must have been good as I barely got a taste. For a main course my other half had the Sliced Steak Sandwich and my kids chose the Sideshow Burger (with a side salad) and the Spicy Shrimp Orecchiette (pasta) special. My son wasn't crazy about the special sauce on the burger, but otherwise everyone was happy. Two of us had enough left overs for our lunch the next day. I was really happy with the size of the starters as they were a great addition to the meal, but not overly filling where you couldn't eat your main entree. The inside of the restaurant was smaller than I expected, but it had a pleasant atmosphere. I was happy about the fact that although they had TVs playing the World Cup in the background the TVs didn't overwhelm the space. We did notice the employees had to bring new supplies/food in through the front door to take to the kitchen repeatedly while we were there. They don't appear to have access directly into the kitchen from outside, which is a little odd. A limitation in the design I suppose. Our waitress was very friendly and pleasant. We ended our meal with a delicious Chocolate Chip Cookie Strudel. We will definitely be back again.

A Second Chance Success at Garvan's Gastropub Having previously had a disappointing experience at Garvan's, a recent gift card prompted us to give this New Paltz establishment another try. I'm glad we did, as this visit completely changed our perspective. The food proved to be a highlight this time around. The burger was cooked perfectly to medium, just as requested, while the shrimp scampi featured perfectly al dente pasta and well-prepared shrimp. The homemade soda bread with real butter was a standout, and the drinks were expertly crafted with excellent flavor profiles. Service was notably impressive, with incredibly attentive and friendly staff. Our meals arrived remarkably quickly - within about 6 minutes of ordering. The servers showed genuine enthusiasm in recommending dishes and even took time to photograph couples celebrating their 20th and 25th anniversaries. Every table in our section received consistent, attentive care. Housed in what feels like a historic New Paltz home, this restaurant offers a gorgeous interior with authentic period charm. The outdoor deck provides an amazing dining experience during summer months, though reservations are essential. A word of caution for winter visits: despite the charming pellet stove, the historic building can get chilly, so bring a sweater. While I can't agree with its current #1 TripAdvisor ranking in New Paltz, I'm revising my previous one-star review to a solid four stars. The pricing runs a bit high for some dishes, though others justify their cost. It's an ideal choice for anyone seeking a casual Irish dining experience with remarkable ambiance. Our dining adventures with our Vermont friends continued with a memorable dinner at Garvan's (we choose a spot halfway between us to meet for an early dinner, several times a year). THE GROWS: Honestly, I couldn't find much to critique. The service was friendly and attentive, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lovely. Maybe next time I'll try the Angus burger sliders with Gorgonzola - they sounded amazing too! THE GLOWS: We had a situation with my handicapped mother needing assistance, and the staff rushed to help us with seating - friendly and professional! A+ for service. Our server suggested the street corn carrots for an appetizer, and they were AMAZING! Spiced perfectly, with an aioli that was seriously to-die-for. We also went with their recommendation for the sea scallops entree, which were cooked beautifully. I got the filet mignon special with shrimp scampi. The steak was cooked exactly as requested, and the shrimp were delicious. The short ribs, cooked over 37 hours, were spectacular. We couldn't resist sharing a dessert, and the Biscoff toffee cake did not disappoint! It had a Biscoff cookie base, layers of bananas, homemade caramel, and whipped cream - pure decadence. Apparently, all their desserts are made in-house, which is a major plus. They put out complimentary homemade Irish soda bread. It was so good that I asked for a loaf to-go! This place is incredible and completely hit the spot! We came here for lunch on a cold, drizzly Saturday afternoon and we couldn't have picked a better place. The atmosphere at Garvan's reminded us so much of the pubs we often frequented during our time in the UK. Their pub area - with the low ceilings, wood fireplace, and exposed wooden beams - felt like it transported us back in time and to another country. There were four of us altogether and two of us ordered Bangers and Mash, and we also got the Garvan Gorgonzola Burger and the Guinness Lamb Stew along with a few drinks. Every dish was plated beautifully and the portion sizes were significant - especially for the price of less than $20/person. But what blew us away was the quality and flavor of each dish! The mashed potatoes in the Bangers and Mash were top-notch! (They also appear to pipe the potatoes onto the plate, so bonus points for that.) The stew was unreal! It was so rich (in a good way) and a perfect savory depth that really brought out the best in the vegetables, and the lamb was tenderly cooked. The Gorgonzola burger was cooked to temp perfectly and the sweet caramelized onions balanced out the cheese. It also comes with truffle fries, which were delicious. All in all, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We live in Manhattan and we were in New Paltz for the day, so we're glad we made the decision to dine at Garvan's. The Owner Garvan was Extremely Rude & Confrontational. My son had made a Birthday Reservation to celebrate my Birthday. He made reservation on 8/28 for 9/1 . Eleven adults, 3 children for 230pm dinner. When we arrived we realized half our party was already seated but we were made to wait in lobby for 20 minutes. Then we were told ok go to table. When got to table , seated family explained that staff were all complaining we messed up our reservation. We were trying to make it work and were ready to sit and relax when the owner Garvan came storming in. Asked if we were ok, my Son answered saying, yeah we're making it work. Garvan than said well you better make it work because you screwed up your reservation. That's when I jumped in to say No we have an email confirmation stating 11 adults 3 children. He became very offensive and told us if we didn't like it we could leave. We were astonished a Restaurant Owner would act this way. We proceeded to then leave and he rushed to front door to escort us out lol he was kicking us out. Screaming at us all the way. His son who works there even pushed my son to move faster, this son had just spent a month in Westchester Medical and just gotten out a couple days prior. This Happy Birthday Celebration turned into a nightmare with young grandchildren crying and us left in wild bewilderment that this all occurred. Don't ever go here. Garvan is way past his prime and has turned into an old Irish drunk!!! read more

Absolutely amazing! We were welcomed by Garvan at the front door -- not having reservations we weren't sure we could get in but we were welcomed and treated like old friends. Had 'the best Guinness beer outside of Ireland' (not kidding -- was delicious! so good we were sending photos to friends of the pour). We had left Mohonk on our way home and wanted to have some Irish fare...tasted the fish and chips and pastrami which were very good and loved the crispy truffle fries that accompanied...also ordered some Shepherds pie to take home for dinner (like my Nana's, made with lamb)... so amazing. And even though we were 'stuffed to the gills' we brought home two delicious slices of pie made by Leonie (Garvan's lovely wife) -- Guinness chocolate cake and Irish banoffee pie. She is as sweet as her delicious desserts -- if we lived closer, this would be the restaurant we would frequent pretty much weekly. I visited after being intrigued by the promising reviews. The restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored old house surrounded by majestic, century-old trees, seemed like a perfect spot for an elegant dining experience. The charming architecture and white tablecloth service set high expectations for the evening. However, once the food arrived, the allure quickly faded. I ordered the Caesar salad and was immediately disappointed. The romaine lettuce consisted of uniformly small bits that were unmistakably pre-chopped and straight out of a bag--some pieces even had a grayish tint, looking wilted and lifeless. The real letdown was the duck breast. Not only was it underwhelming in flavor, but it also carried an off-putting, foul smell that made it difficult to enjoy. For a restaurant with a $$$ price tag and fine dining ambiance, I expected much more. Sadly, Garvan's turned out to be more of a tourist trap than the hidden gem it claims to be. read more

We had such a great experience at Garvin's Gastro Pub in New Paltz! This charming Irish-themed restaurant made us feel right at home, and the food was truly memorable. . Two of us ordered the lump crab cakes, and they were absolutely fantastic--fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Another in our group had the grilled cheese sandwich, which was warm, gooey, and incredibly satisfying. It's simple comfort food done right! We also tried the clam chowder, which was full of rich flavors and packed with tender clams. Sorry Garvan, you really disappointed us. Went there to celebrate my sons Graduation. We were seated next to the fireplace and there were noxious fumes seeping through the floor from the malfunctioning oil burner below. Serious Carbon Monoxide issue. Second, I had the short rib and there was literally no meat. Just a hunk of fat. Third, My wife had the ravioli and it looked like it had been siting for a while in oil and was served luke warm. Forth, my son (who works in hospitality for a 5 Star NYC Hotel) had the seafood trio, which came out cold. It had been sitting for quite a while before being served. Finally, we tried some desert and the Creme Brulee was a liquid consistency... Not good. Asked to talk to Garvan to explain, and basically he shrugged said sorry to hear and went back to drink at the bar. This place is way over-rated. Go somewhere else! read more

The food we had was not only reminiscent of our favorite flavors but also worth every penny spent. What truly stood out, apart from the delicious dishes, were the wonderful owners of Garvans. We have lived near New Paltz for about a dozen years and have thoroughly enjoyed the great selection of quality restaurants in the area. Last night we went to Garvan's to celebrate Elizabeth's birthday. The evening reaffirmed for us that Garvan's is one of our all-time favorite restaurants. We held our daughter's bridal shower at Garvan's and the event was absolutely spectacular. The accomodations were perfect, the wait staff extraordinary and the food outstanding. Garvan and Joshua prepared an experience that was just superior. Our wait staffer Rob could not have been more professional and personable. Avoid this place- 100%. The owner/manager was incredibly rude- me and my wife were astonished- never expected this in America. The rudeness itself is enough justification to avoid this place at any cost. I would definitely recommend to boycott this place: polite service is a must and a foundation of the industry. read more

Now the reason I knocked off 2 stars was because of a miscommunication in our reservation regarding allergies. The night before our reservation they called to confirm the time, number of guests, and the allergies listed on the reservation. I am allergic to treenuts and they served both Burrata and Radicchio salad with the nuts on/in it. Good thing I noticed as well as another girl in my party that they hadn't been removed. Once notified the staff quickly removed it and made a new one fresh without nuts. The manager additionally came over and profusely apologized. My issue is, why confirm our allergies the night before if it is disregarded the day of. They even gave us a discount and only charged $115/pp. However, that doesn't fix the problem if I had ingested either of those dishes, what would have happened. Other than those 2 slip ups. The food was tasty and felt homecooked. The rolls were hot and buttery, the salted whipped butter was a nice touch. The pork meatballs were tender and juicy. I think out of the mains my favorite was the fish curry. Cocktails are NYC prices. Portion sizes were small and we left feeling hungry. Presentation is nice and it gives you that fine dining vibe.

For appetizers we ordered the oysters, the special beef tenderloin chili and the baked clams with the maple brussel sprouts. The oysters were fresh- super enjoyable. The chili was okay - nothing too remarkable and the baked clams were super tasty I would say as well. The brussel sprouts werent crispy on the outside but the flavoring of the apple and maple made it super addicting and it became one of my favorite dishes near the end of the meal. We also got the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and the steak frites which was cooked to perfection. Super yummy but also super filling so we did not expect the portions to be so huge. The whole menu was great and I somehow preferred the seafood over the main dishes but I definitely will come back for another meal if I'm ever in the area. It wasn't mind blowing as a meal but definitely worth it. Our trusty Yelp app led us to this historic building and restaurant. I'm really glad we came to see some truly great architecture and learn some cool history of life before these United States. Even though the British tried to burn it down during the Revolutionary War, the family restored it to previous glory and it remained in their possession for over 200 more years! Now let's talk about the restaurant experience.... We were seated immediately and given a choice of indoor or covered outdoor seating. Laura came to get a drink order and offered some kids specials. She also put in our daughter's order right away so that she would be occupied and well fed. A chicken quesadilla with fries won her over and filled her up nicely. A bowl of New England clam chowder to start for me followed by a delicious Mushroom Omelette special. So fresh and tasty. The Mad Ukrainian ( formally MR or Mad Russian until the war broke out) had a delicious Reuben Sandwich with fries and a Garden Salad. After the salad and a half sandwich, she decided to save some room for dessert at another place nearby. Pair that up with a couple of local Beers and some soft drinks and coffee and we had an enjoyable lunch.
