Garvan's operations are like a well-oiled machine - they really know how to run a 'tight ship', so to speak. When the Maitre'd, the barkeep and various waitstaff all pitch in to make sure that every patron is highly attended to, it is a reflection of the caring owners and management. These people really know what they're doing. Our cocktails were expertly assembled and our appetizers, entrees and desserts were all quite remarkable. The creamy parmesan risotto, sweet perfectly seared sea scallops, and tender lump crab cake were so savory and well-executed. As my husband and I happily chatted over our meals, we found ourselves raving back and forth to one another about how delicious everything on our plates was! Desserts: WoW! What's not "to die for"? The house vanilla bean creme brûlée - good Lord.... who knew that could be so scrumptious and satisfying? And the special "Banoffee? Geeze Louise! Where do I begin ? This was one of the dining highlights for our family this year. We made reservations for 6 and were seated in "the fancy room". This was the old "Locust Tree Inn" but Garvan has made this restaurant his own. The entree's were just perfect . The service was perfect . Wow, what an amazing dinner we had tonight. A friend recommended Garvans and after a hike in Mohonk it was the perfect respite. We began with the fruit and cheese plate which was just a delightful start. I had the Guiness lamb stew and my husband had the 12 oz burger. Both were delicious and well cooked. Our server, Tara was polite and dilligent. We lacked for nothing, Tara checked in on us several times to ensure a delightful experience. We are from, CT and will definitely make the trip again...so worth it! read more

First of all, this restaurant/house is amazing! I'm guessing the house was built at the turn of the century (or even before) and then turned into a restaurant of sorts, with rooms full of dining tables and chairs everywhere you go, even upstairs. The host was super friendly, as we rolled in 5-deep with three kids under 10, all famished. The lobster ravioli was good, and the other dishes were fine as well - the kids ate a combination of burgers and pasta and the waitress was extremely accommodating. Now the only real drawback was the price - you'd think being this far from NYC you'd get decent prices but nope, we felt like we were back in the city and paid like it. Other than that, a pretty cool spot, the house was probably the best part (use the bathroom upstairs to get a full walk through of the house). read more

We were disappointed with the Thanksgiving Buffet. Food was served from aluminum tins, the cold gravy wasn't even on a sterno, there was some lettuce with hard as rock rolls that was supposed to be a salad, for $50++ it was a rip. We were taken to Garvan's as guests, thus, we didn't want to embarrass our hosts and say anything. We are very good tippers, but a service charge was "included" for the buffet. All the staff did was bring a few drinks and clear a few plates. This also appeared to be a very heavily male staffed business, maybe we saw one female employee. The ambiance is charming, the bathrooms were very clean, plenty of parking, the bar looked fun, we'd come back again but certainly not for Thanksgiving. read more

From the beginning to end, everything was perfect! Garvan greeted us and Alex, our server, was friendly and attentive. We dined on the patio which was beautiful! The entire restaurant is adorable, especially the front gardens. I cannot rave enough about the food, it was excellent! We had the sea scallop appetizer (That risotto!), potato leek and minestrone soups, raspberry salad, mushroom pasta, guiness lamb stew, and lemon polenta cake (to-go... we were too full!). Garvans gave my friends and I an experience to remember! In looking for a local restaurant during our stay, we stumbled on this restaurant randomly, the ascetic worked for us. On the drive up it felt like a wedding venue, we parked and headed towards the door. A tall gentleman came out and welcomed us, he had the sweetest Irish accent and was so present with us, we told him we are about a half hour early for our reservation and he let us know our table isn't quite ready, but offered to take some pics for us, as we were celebrating a Bachelorette weekend. The Gentleman then told us our table was ready and ushered us upstairs to a private room, for us to be as loud as and comfortable as we wanted. After asking his name we found out he's Garvan! He treated us like royalty, and gave us one of the best servers in the house, his son Conner! Conner was very present an patient with us. The food came and it did not disappoint! I personally got the short ribs, and it was tasty, succulent and tender! It was so delicious! Other crowd pleasers at our table included the tasty seafood trio with salmon on a tasty bed of risotto, crab cakes and scallops, the amazing duck breast that tasted like love and the lobster ravioli in an delicious sauce! Where do I even start with a restaurant like Garvan's? The building was built around the mid 1700s and sits on a beautiful street and great golf course. It's a true Irish pub, but with a extremely tasteful sit down menu and beautiful bar area as well as our door seating. I've been here many times and love the atmosphere, food, drinks, service and of course Gavin, the owner. Truly one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and I promise if you eat at Garvan's, he will make a point to come to your table and introduce himself and have a great laugh. Garvan is a pleasure to talk with and his a treasure for this town. Now to the food, I always get the potato leek soup which is rich and perfect, but the lamb stew, which is often a special but pretty common to have available is incredible and perfect for a brisk or cold day. Every table gets fresh soda bread that's made by Garvan's wife. It's excellent. In addition, my wife and I love the Reuben sandwich and truffle fries (I'm a sucker for Reubens and this one is by far the best I've ever had). The menu has a great assortment of seafood and meat dishes. My other personal favorite is the gorgonzola (did I spell that right) burger. It's great. I could go on for a while about the food and drink, but my fingers are getting tired. Just TRUST me when I say, it's worth it for the atmosphere, the food, the drink and especially Garvan. We found this place on yelp, when we were passing through New Paltz and wanted somewhere to have lunch. Even with such high ratings, it was even better than we expected! The space is gorgeous; huge, but homey, and a good setting for many occasions--family meal, date, friends lunch, etc. The service was impeccable: the waiter was attentive, friendly, and very professional. Most importantly, the food was so delicious!! I really enjoyed my bangers and mash (best mash I've had in a while), but I thought the penne with chicken was the stunner of the meal. My mom thought the lamb stew could have used more meat, but she enjoyed the flavor. The clam chowder was so tasty, we ordered another one. Garvan's is absolutely delightful. I'm English and the fish and chips is as close to what it's like back home as I have found in the US. But really, everything on the menu is excellent. The banoffee pie is so good that we sometimes go just for dessert. On top of that, the staff is so warm and courteous. You can tell everyone loves working there. Garvan himself will often stop by the table for a friendly chat and he is always so courteous and grateful for your visit. A must-see if in the New Paltz area. read more

Off the beaten track but well worth the visit, Garvan's deserves its place at the top of the list for its fantastic food. We sat at a tented area outside and all tables were adequately spaced apart. I have tremendous respect for the owner who turned away this moronic couple who refused to put their masks on. The potato leek soup and shrimp scampi were fantastically seasoned. But it was the shepherd's pie that truly stood out for me. Baked to perfection on a heated bowl, I loved every single bite - even as I burned my tongue with its delightful goodness. The one piece of feedback were the bloody Mary's which were not on the menu - I think they should think about how they can concoct a tastier brunch cocktail - and I'm sure they could once they put some attention to it. read more

Really would give it 3 1/2 stars but they don't have halves on yelp. I remember this restaurant when it was The Locust Tree. Very old time French bistro atmosphere. Service was good and seating was prompt. Bert salad was a bit bland and stingy on the portion. I just had a very similar dish elsewhere and was surprised by the difference in portions. Had the sea scallops with risotto appetizer as an entree. It was very tasty. The 3 scallops were nicely seared and the risotto was creamy with a nice sauce. The downfall however was the $1 charge for an extra slice of bread. I felt like Oliver Twist begging for porridge. Since I bake quite a bit I know bread is not expensive to make and I didn't ask for a loaf. I thought it was a bit chintzy to charge for every slice. All in all the food was decent but I doubt I'll go rushing back. read more

Stumbled upon this place while visiting for the weekend and wow, we were not disappointed! We didn't have a reservation and we walked in around 6pm on a Friday night. We were almost turned away by one of the staff members, but luckily another host came and said she'd be able to seat us. (They were pretty empty so we would have been disappointed if they couldn't have accommodated us) Our waiter Ross was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and attentive. He recommended two delicious cocktails for us to start and then helped us select a bottle of wine following. He also gave us great recommendations for entrees - we went with the seafood trio and the braised short rib. The only negative about the experience was the entrees were not hot at all when they arrived to us, but it's understandable when you're dining outside in 50 degree weather. Even lukewarm, the food was outstanding. And the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. I would return in a heartbeat! read more

Delightful restaurant- went here for St. Patrick's Day. The owner, Garvan, greeted us warmly and GENUINELY as we entered, with a huge smile. The antique building (former house built in the 1800's) was so cozy and beautiful. To start, we got the potato and leek soup, which was soooo delicious, and caeser salad- it was fresh, crisp and delicious, with just the right amount of dressing. For entrees we had the corned beef and cabbage, sheperd's pie, and fish and chips. All were delicious- the light, creamy mustard that came with the corned beef was SO good, and the homemade tartar sauce was the BEST I've ever had in my life. The truffle fries that came with the fish were outstanding- crispy outside, creamy inside, with noticeably good quality truffle oil and grated Parmesan. While the food was delicious, the absolute best part of the entire meal was the dessert. The Guinness crème brûlée is the best crème brûlée I've ever had, and I've had many. It's dark from the Guinness, so it almost looks chocolate, but it's not- it's a classic crème brûlée custard, with a very slight almost coffee, taste to it from the Guiness, and a hard, crackly, glass-like burnt sugar top. We also had the polenta cake, which was good, but paled in comparison to the Banoffee- a pie made with a homemade Irish cookie crust, slices of banana, thick, gooey dark caramel, and fluffy, fresh whipped cream! read more

We came here for our birthday dinner. I cannot say enough about the food, drinks, atmosphere, waiter, and hostess. First, we had reservations and we drove from Long Island. Traffic was not on our side. Even though we were an hour late, the hostess was lovely, accommodating, and found us a perfect table. Garvan himself greeted us with a smile. Walking into the restaurant, Irish music played, once seated "I'll Tell Me Ma" filled my ears and I felt a huge smile and memories all around me. Second, our waiter had all the answers to every question about the food and drinks. He was very charming and charismatic to boot! He made excellent recommendations! Third, the drink menu. Omg. The drink menu! Breakfast Manhattan with Baby Bourbon and bacon for me! Wild Mountain Thyme for him. Even without, the bacon (sad face, they were out) this Manhattan was amazing! Lastly, the food. The short ribs are to die for. Surf and turf, with shrimp and short ribs. Yes. Life changing. My mouth is watering just remembering! He ordered the rib eye, medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. They were able to sub out the mashed potatoes for asparagus and spinach for a small charge. Worth it! Had I realized the short ribs surf and turf came with mashed potatoes, I would have done the same. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Thoroughly enjoyed my stop in at Garvan's. Grabbed a quick dinner at the bar while waiting for a friend to get off work. I ordered a lovely little heirloom salad and the scallops. Both were excellent. The staff had me chuckling with their non stop banter and made me feel right at home. The wine recommendation from the bartender was spot-on. And to top if off they talked me into some off menu dessert that blew my mind. I would stop at Garvan's once a week if I lived close. Don't miss it if you're in the neighborhood. They always offer outdoor seating with our dog, but now due to Covid they have ample outdoor seating that they have made especially cute. I ate here Saturday night with my daughter. At first we were seated under the tent top, but we were bothered by gnats so I asked to be moved to the screened in porch area. I recommend reserving in this area in the first place if you do not want to be indoors due to coronavirus. They seated us at a huge round table near the kitchen so we had to listen to the kitchen noise. I would request to be on the screening in porch facing the outside "untented" diners. I think that you can't go wrong there. It is a nice choice for a special evening out. I enjoyed the seafood trio entree. Not as impressed with the vegetable napoleon. Excellent Irish soda bread. I had studied yelp carefully (to sort through the unnecessary shallow reviews) and really liked what I read about Garvan's. This was our first time and we hope to come back! The waiter who took my order over the phone was super patient: we were staying at a place with barely any cell service and it took 3 tries to get the order through. Food was excellent! We were seated next to the fireplace, matching the "warmth" of the staff with the literal warmth from the fire. The service was impeccable. Our food arrived quickly and was delicious. The atmosphere was perfect for a homey and intimate lunch. I am from upstate New York but visit the Mid-Hudson region often, particularly Ulster County.
