We were staying at Hotel Shocard, and went next door to "4.2 star" Garveys for dinner - we were tired and starving that first night. My wife had French onion soup, which was covered with three slices of typical Swiss melted slightly by the heat of the soup. Pulled the cheese off, leaving good-enough soup. She then ordered nachos, which she said were the worst glop she's ever had. I had a corned beef sandwich, substituting roasted "Brussel" sprouts with balsamic glaze. Sprouts were good. Corned beef was unevenly sliced up to 3/8" thick, 1/3 of which was fat that I cut out. I ate the sandwich with knife and fork. Much of the meat was tough. The staff was very friendly, and attentive enough. They asked how everything was, but we lied and said it was good. We'd eaten everything so I would have been embarrassed to complain. read more

This is a cute pub located right in the theater district. I came for dinner right before Redwood and it was great. There's live music and the singer was lovely. I got the fried chicken sandwich which came with fries and a pickle. The fries were great and the sandwich was good, but I though the chicken was a tad dry. Service was good although it did take a while for us to get the check despite asking a few times, I guess they were busy that night. This Irish pub was adjacent to our hotel and, though we didn't travel here for St. Patrick's Day, celebrating over a few brews just seemed like the right thing to do. What a fun evening! The bartenders were exceptionally friendly, despite a packed house of revelers. And I noticed that the manager laid down the law to an older man who brought a young child into the bar and refused to serve him. They advertised live music and fish and chips. Pub music and fish and chips? Yes. Yes, please. Walked in and had no trouble finding a table, as it was a Thursday night. Ambiance and setting were good. Place was clean, and the service was prompt. As expected, I ordered the fish and chips. Nice crisp fries, and fish that was cooked well and wasn't greasy. My only complaint is about the music. The pub musician knew NO pub songs. No Stan Rogers covers. No Chieftains tributes. No Dubliners ditties (I asked!). No music you would expect to hear in an Irish Pub. What diner's and tipplers got was a gravelly, mush-mouthed, soloist who's choice of music was badly composed acoustic covers. These included Beyonce's "Halo" and some other pop rubbish by the Gin Blossoms or Goo Goo dolls. read more

It may not be fair judging a restaurant on a holiday when the city is hosting an iconic parade, but I imagine most establishments should be prepared to handle it. Service was slow- waitstaff didn't get our order until 50 minutes after being seated and parties seated after us. Soda was watery, food was mediocre. Great service as always. Pearse and Andrew were on the ball serving delicious cocktails to us. This time I remembered to include pics of the food. Not before i put ketchup on the fries (sorry). My friend and I both tried the Irish sausages with fries and curry sauce on the side. I've had Irish sausage at many places all over queens and the Bronx and these were bar far the best we have eaten. My daughter got the chicken with broccoli and fingerling potatoes. She said it was delicious. Believe me, if I try something the chef has made that isn't out of this world I will be completely honest. So far every dish we have ordered had been delicious. Granted it was Christmas day, but we ordered 4 different types of beer and everyone was incredibly flat.

I stopped here after a concert earlier this week. Had a few beers and a pretzel with cheese (which was awesome). Friendly bartender, and I like the music too: it was mostly traditional Irish sing-alongs, but with the occasional Van Halen or Rolling Stones tune to mix things up. What a cool bar. If I lived in New York this might be a regular stop of mine. And I will keep Garvey's in mind next time I'm visiting. read more

My friends and I came here to begin celebrating my bachelorette and it was a mixed experience. We originally went for happy hour and were told by one waiter that the canned drinks were $5 but then got charged $10. Then another waiter charged my other friend $5, but everyone else $10 for the same canned drink. We are unsure why the prices were so inconsistent for canned drinks. However I will say, the vibes were really fun and made up for this mishap. They have live music and a decent amount of space to mingle if you have a larger crowd of people in your party. One of the most crisp Guinness in NYC. Poured just right and the moment my cup was ready for a refill, a new one (with a shamrock ) was slid my direction! The food was incredible, had the half roasted chicken. I was told it would take about a half hour to be ready, so the expectation was set. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, veggies were tender but still had a bit of a bite and the mash was creamy and delicious. All of this was, somehow, outshined but the epic tunes of Allen Gogarty. We stoped at Garvey's for a late night drink and snack as it was only a few doors down from our hotel. Conveniently located in Time Square, greeted by a friendly bartender and Guinness on tap. We were hoping for live music but there wasn't any on the night we went. They also have a great selection of wine and whiskey. Full menu available, but we only had a pretzel and it was okay, definitely didn't taste like. NY fresh pretzel. It was served with cheese, but the table mustard was much better for dipping. The pub is rather new here. We arrived about 6:30 PM. We were greeted when we walked in, and we're directly seated. Our server came to our table and asked for our drink order. He was very disinterested. It took a few minutes for our draft Guinness to arrive. And the server left without saying a word. He later came back and ask for our dinner order. My wife asked for the Shepherds Pie, and I the Bacon Spinach salad. Again the server left without another word or question. The place was extremely loud with the recorded music very loud. All the patrons were forced to shout to communicate!! And nothing at all suggested an Irish pub!! Our food came again without a word. But the food was delicious!! The pie was great! We were on our way to pizza and happened upon Garvey's Pub and decided to push pizza to lunch the next day and go in for fish and chips (this review is limited to that menu item but really that's the constant at Irish Pubs that really tell me the status of the place). In a word - delicious and satisfying. I paired it with a Montauk IPA (okay 2) but left filling full and with a card should I ever be in NY City again.
