I do not know anything about cars and I use to go exclusively to the dealer. The staff at Gary's are very nice. I've visited this location 2 times both times they were able to see me the same day. The first time was in August, my car sounded like an airplane and I was afraid to drive it. They said I needed brakes & rotors and charged $685 w/ a lifetime guarantee. I paid it. The 2nd time was in September I was smelling fumes and was told I needed a a rear catalytic converter with an estimate of about $1500. I went to a mechanic at a gas station. He charged me $155 for parts and labor. No more issues. read more

It's a family-owned business that clearly places a great deal of emphasis on customer service. I needed an embarrassing amount of exterior lights. The work was done quickly for a reasonable price. Gary Jr. explained a couple of other issues in detail with no pressure whatsoever to get them fixed right away. The staff was fantastic, especially Sue at the front desk, who welcomed me like a long-time customer. In a world where everything has become so impersonal, I appreciate a personal touch, especially when dealing with annoying car repairs. I received a repair order from the police to get my headlights fixed and put in the light bulbs myself. I looked online and saw the great reviews for Gary's automotive and I definitely got the family atmosphere feel. My car was quickly inspected and completed within minutes and on my back home. Needed to change worn-out rear brake pads as they were making grinding noise. Mark at reception was courteous and professional. He scheduled a same-day afternoon appointment over the phone. Premises were clean (for some reason, some repair shops still have a hard time maintaining this basic sanitation). Had to change both rotors and brake pads. Gary Jr. was polite and instructive and showed why they had to be replaced. The whole process took about two hours and ended up costing $400, which to me seems a bit pricey. Brake pads at Autozone cost about $25 - Gary's estimate for them was $60. Rotors cost about $167 for each piece and about $116 in labor. Also, had issues with processing online coupon and couldn't get the discount (albeit it was ~$12) Overall it was a satisfactory experience and the service seemed trustworthy Pros: Courteous staff; convenient location; clean premises; good service Cons: Expensive Would recommend. read more

I took a couple of different cars here and never had a successful experience. The first time, we took our minivan because the front window wouldn't roll down (yes, the real old fashioned crank windows). I told them that was the issue and after keeping it all day, charging us a couple of hundred dollars for the repair, I went out and...the window didn't roll down. They kept telling me that they had replaced the mechanism, which was "what you wanted". No...what I wanted was to ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW. So they refused to make it good. So to the day we got rid of the car, we could never roll down the driver's window. But my parents kept swearing by this place, so when I needed brakes in my car, I took it there. $400 later, I had brakes...brakes so good that if you breathed on them your car would lurch to a stop. And I couldn't put on the emergency brake because even one click was too much...sigh. Never going there again no matter WHAT my parents say about how great they are! read more

I had my 2004 Toyota Camry inspected here with oil change. No complaints about the work, but customer service left a lot to be desired. There were two people working the front desk, a young man and a middle aged woman. The young man was very professional and polite. The middle aged woman was rude and overly familiar with me, and I witnessed similar interactions while sitting in the waiting area. I am a young woman, and look much younger (baby face), so maybe she thought I looked like her child and treated me as such. Respectful treatment is a pillar of good customer service, though, especially when the customer is paying hundreds of dollars for your services. I will never use this business again. Two stars instead of 1 because the garage staff deserves credit. read more

Have not had a chance to go to Gary's for actual auto service but did recently have a run in with the state police and it needed a safety inspection taken care of. The staff was so amazing, I don't even know how to describe it. They had nothing to gain from me financially but extended assistance and kindness in a way my day needed. Not from the area. Stationed here. Came here after reading good reviews and got way more than I expected! Brought them some breakfast sandwiches and the son (father and son run business) was very thankful and friendly. Sue, who works the reception window was very kind and has a great sense of humor. First time here changed one axle's worth of brakes and had Gary, Jr. take me into the garage to show me something. My knee-jerk reaction was "oh Lord, this person is trying to sell me something I don't need". Boy, was I wrong! He brought me out to show me that my rear driver's side tire had a band inside it snap and there were ragged bald patches through my tire for about 18"! With the way I drive on highways, I'm lucky nothing terrible happened to me! So we added two tires to the order. Including labor for my two tires (Nissan Altima), and front brakes, including rotors, the total was 600. I also purchased their VIP car care club plan. For $106, you get 4 oil changes (that alone pays for itself), a tire rotation and balance, one time 10% off any labor charge you choose, a coupon for 30-60-90-120K service, coupon for fluid service or flush, $20 per axle off brake service, coupon off air filters, buy one get one windshield wiper coupon, and a coupon off alignment. I was having phone trouble that day, and happily and free of charge, the offered to take me to the store so I could get my phone squared away because of the unexpected wait on the tires we didn't know we'd need. Sue is an angel. She also picked me up when I called. The waiting room is small, but there seem to be an abundance of repeat customers, of all different ages, shapes, colors, sizes, ethnicities, and genders. Those who are known seem to be treated like family. New customers all seem to be treated with respect and a great sense of humor. There are good people running this place. I could not ask for a more honest, caring, down-to-earth, quality run and customer service oriented business. Their pricing is better than competitive. I will not be going anywhere else for car service so long as I am in Maryland. I hope you get a chance to work with them. read more

I'm sad to report my latest and probably my last experience with Gary's Automotive in Laurel, MD. I've been to Gary's a few times in the past and was BEYOND IMPRESSED with the level of customer service that I received. Like the cliche goes, all good things come to an end. I scheduled my appointment via the website (for an oil change, check engine light and fuel indicator not properly working), Gary responded to confirm the appointment a short time later, I dropped my vehicle off after business hours (4 March 2013). The next day (5 March 2013) Mark calls to confirm that my vehicle is at the shop. Mark later calls to tell me that my vehicle will need to be diagnosed which I expected. Mark later calls to inform me of the diagnostic test results and that the cost would be over $300. The problems HAD NOT been discovered, at the time of the last call. No parts had been ordered. Essentially NOTHING MORE THAN DIAGNOSTIC had happened and the price was OVER $300.00. I asked Mark if that fee (over $300) was just for "finding" the problem. Mark said yes. I told him that I was not in the market to spend that type of money just diagnosing the problem. Therefore, I told Mark, " just do the oil change and I'll look into my options for the other issues." We (Mark and I) disconnect the call. Mark calls back a few moments later and says that, "We clearly can't make you happy. We WILL NOT be servicing your vehicle at all. You can pick your vehicle up now." I replied, "So you won't be changing the oil? You want to sever our business relationship (because I can't afford to pay over $300 FOR JUST THE DIAGNOSIS)? Mark's answer was, "Yeah we won't be doing anything to your vehicle, that's fine, come get your vehicle." I'm still trying to figure out what happened. This shop was good in the past. I felt like I was being BULLIED or FORCED to spend monies that A) Didn't make sense, B) That I wasn't expecting to spend. Bottomline, if you want to be confused and bullied into paying exurbently high fees for service then go to Gary's Automotive in Laurel, Md. Otherwise, STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS Now I'm just hoping that when I get off in 4 hours that my car doesn't have "NEW" issues because I didn't fall victim to the peer pressure of doing business with Gary's Automotive. read more

From the convenience of scheduling thru their website, up to the actual inspection, the overall experience was amazing! I'm highly recommending Gary's Automotive! Kudos to Sue, who was very professional and courteous! I scheduled online on a Monday night and she called me during the first hour of the following morning to confirm and was very considerate of my time. She explained how long the inspection will take and how much it will cost. Upon arrival, she efficiently got all the required information and gave me recommendations while I wait. I had a quick lunch at the shopping center close by. She called me right away after the inspection completed, which was within their expected time. I was basically in-and-out in an hour. I took my vehicle to Gary's Automotive, and Gary,Jr to be exact, to get a safety inspection because of the great reviews I saw on Yelp and the close location to my home. I'm not sure who serviced the other reviewers, but my experience was not only horrendous, but most likely illegal!! Gary returned my car to me, stating that it needed a new steering fluid pump line because the current one was leaking. Gary stated he could fix it for $372.00. I was initially okay with that, but told him I'd be taking it to my own mechanic for repair. Thank goodness I had another mechanic. Because upon taking it to him, my mechanic advised me that nothing was wrong with my line, nothing was leaking at all, and that he could not in good faith or conscious replace it. I immediately returned to Gary's Automotive and he not only refused to correct the safety inspection, but he refused to refund my money. I then took it to a third mechanic to get the inspection done and he found NOTHING wrong with the vehicle. I got my safety inspection without a glitch. It is funny that only Gary's Automotive found the convenient $372.00 problem. I don't think it's a coincidence that out of three certified car repair shops, all inspecting the same vehicle on the same day, his was the only one to find a problem. I'm sure he must do this kind of shady business regularly, as it can be quite lucrative when servicing the uninformed customer. So BEWARE!!!! As a note, I do plan on notifying the MD State Police to investigate this shop, and I will also be contacting the Better Business Bureau. If my mechanic did inspections, I'd never have bothered going elsewhere. DO NOT GO TO THIS SHOP FOR ANY REPAIRS, AS THEY ARE TOTALLY DISHONEST!!! read more

I brought in my car for an inspection and was told that the Left Front Strut needed to be replaced and the seal was broken. It seems like $300 is the magic number because I was quoted $313.36 by Mark. My car is barely 3yrs old, single-owner, and low mileage... I informed them of my extended warranty and deductible ($100) which thankfully covered struts. After dropping off my car for repairs, I received a call stating that I would have to pay $140...my cost after the insurance. This did not sound right, if I have an extended warranty that covers everything for repairs at a flat $100, where is the 40 from?...Given that they would fix whatever "issue" was wrong with my car that failed the inspection, there-inspection was to be at no charge. After long phone calls and run-around answers...come to find out they were attempting to use an after-market part for my car...I was being RIPPED-OFF!!! I took the car to the Toyota Dealership and was told...There's nothing wrong with my Left Front Strut and it should have PASSED the inspection!!!.... I do not recommend them at all to anyone and will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau for fraud. read more
