My favorite neighborhood cafe - lot's of seating, great light, excellent coffee, and friendly staff. Good place to get work done if you can get a table. Coffee: Roasted in-house, the beans are nicely packaged in plain brown paper bags with different colored wax seals. Their cold-brew is excellent, as is their espresso and drip coffee. Their espresso actually comes with a little cup of sparkling water which is a nice, refreshing afternoon option. Watch out if you order hot coffee in a for-here cup, though, as their cups do tend to cool the coffee down pretty fast (or maybe I'm just a slow drinker). So, if you don't wanna gulp of lukewarm coffee, drink up! Ambiance: the cafe is really bright and spacious, with plenty of tables (though they fill up fast). It has kind of a woodsy, eclectic look to it - with taxidermy and antiques and interesting wallpaper. The music can be a little hit or miss - sometimes it's a bit loud and grating. One thing to note, if you sit by one of the window seats in the middle of the day when the sun is shining through you might end up sweating as I think it's a single pane - this even happened to me in the winter, the sun can get really hot in there. Food: I've never tried their pastries (there usually weren't a lot of options) but they have a really nice menu that they serve out of their kitchen. It can be a little on the pricey side, but it puts other coffee shop food to shame, particularly the avocado toast and the grilled cheese. Staff: super friendly - I was in here at least 3-4 times a week for over a year and never had any issues. Overall, a great spot in a really nice part of the neighborhood. read more

Coffee shops in a city as large as Chicago and in a neighborhood as trendy as Logan Square are common. So is the coffee. This place was common and cold. I have never had a cup of coffee so fantastic it made me want to be a loyal patron of an establishment... and I still haven't. It is normally the ambiance and/or the customer service that brings me back and all I can say is I will not be going back to this place. The only thing I feel this place had going for it was the decor (rustic). The customer service was absent. Maybe it takes Sundays off. You'll get the same cup of coffee and hipster feel from another bourgeois shop in the neighborhood. read more

The coffee at Gaslight is really good--cappuccinos are made well and the milk is high quality. They roast their own beans, too! Further, I really liked the cheese scone--it was fresh and reasonably priced. The downside here is the music--while we were here, the baristas were playing some really loud, really obnoxious music (think experimental chainsaw quartet). Even through my large, over-the-ear headphones it was grating. Maybe they were in a weird mood? In any case, to those hoping to get some work done: beware the cafe DJ. read more

Gaslight is the Longman & Eagle of coffee houses. Simultaneously hipster and upscale. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood and are willing to lay down some cash for an incredible breakfast experience. Drink - POUR OVER COFFEE. Smooth and flavorful, not too acidic. Absolutely worth the wait. Eat - The bagel and lox. I debated for awhile whether or not it was worth the $10.50, but let me tell you, IT WAS. Service - they bring food to your table, which is wonderful. No complaints here. Atmosphere - Hip, young, professionals working on their laptops and talking quietly. Great music selection. Tried this place while visiting Chicago. It's a great coffee shop, as others have described, very spacious which makes it a nice coffee shop for studying. It has a variety of table arrangements which are even suitable for larger groups. My latte was perfect, didn't need any sugar or anything added to it which is always a good sign. Kitchen closes ealry (at around 3pm) so if you want food, be sure to order it early! read more

When I was around 13 years old we went on a family vacation to Boston. While visiting the Boston Common my father excitedly glimpsed a group of hippies, something he had not yet seen in the Midwest. "Quick" he commanded, "Go stand in front of the hippies so I can get their picture." I tried to distance myself from him and my younger sister who was obediently posing and the young people approached them. I remember that event as the single most embarrassing moment of my childhood. I flashed back to that moment when we were in Gaslight Coffee Roasters. We had come for the coffee and encountered a hipster clubhouse. My dad and my sister were actually more welcomed by the young hippies than we were here. Take it from me, trio of Mom, Grandma and 1 month old are not wanted here by the regulars. We sat by ourselves and the baby was absolutely fine but it wasn't comfortable. On the bright side, the vanilla latte was very smooth and delicious. We split a terrific sandwich, meats and cheeses on a crunchy, yummy baguette. As we were finishing up, I said to my daughter, "Here, hold the baby so I can get a picture of you." She only laughed because she had heard the Boston story and knew what I was trying to do. Ha, busted and I had become my father. If I happened to be in the area, I would probably get a coffee to go. Or maybe not. It was really mellow coffee but the unwelcoming vibe was bitter indeed. read more

As I walked into Hipster Heaven, I was so startled. No, I was not surrounded by extras in an episode of New Girl. This was real life. I immediately knew we were so out of place. I mean I had showered that day and I did not have a mac book with me. They were equally startled. I am not kidding when I tell you that every customer and staff member turned and gasped as a mom, grandma and one month old baby walked in. We had definitely invaded their space and they were not pleased. No worries, I was not fazed. I am secure in my suburban geekiness and so I strode up to the counter and ordered a latte and a turkey sandwich. While the atmosphere was somewhat hostile, Gaslight's latte was one of the best I have ever had. The espresso was smooth and the milk was delicious as it was decidedly not of the fat free variety. I added two teaspoons of raw sugar and it was divine. The sandwich was also tasty. It had enough goat cheese so that you could really taste it, but it didn't overpower the other flavors. I also enjoyed the pickled asparagus that came on the side. I would go back because the latte was that good, but I would take it to go. The people watching is really only a one time thing and the seating is limited. read more

Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm.... Okay. I came in on this tour I'm doing of Chicago cafes. It's completely for personal satisfaction- I'm really just curious about where the best cup in Chicago is at. Upon entering the cafe, I was a bit confused at first- the menu was difficult to locate, a small piece of paper hidden behind two customers who were ordering. When I got to check it out, however, I found there to be a decent selection of pour-overs and late offerings. Good deal! I told the barista about my quest, and inquired about what she thought the best they had to offer was- it turned out to be a Burundi pour over. I was down! Personal approval typically counts for something. I might have ordered something to nom on, but I found that the only offers for food included duck eggs. I'm a bit squeamish. I've tried quail before and it wasn't for me, so I wasn't brave enough to delve into another bird's babies. I do wish that they had more to choose from. Some fruit maybe? I found a seat at a very long table in the back, as all of the two-seaters were taken, and sized up the decor. Now, I have to hand it to Gaslight- if they were going for the whole "Canadian Wilderness" look, they've got it down pat. I felt like I was in a cabin in the woods, only nobody was dying. Everybody was just sipping coffee and rubbing their beards. I did notice with delight that the beakers they used for their v60s and whatnot had woodsy little scarves on them- how cute! However, all decor was a bit overshadowed... why? Well, the feathers in my face were a bit unsavory. and by feathers, I mean the taxedermied pheasant sitting on the table. Now, I'm a hunter's daughter. I don't mind a dead animal every now and then when it's for feeding the family and in the shed where I don't have to see it. And as a pet owner, I will say that I don't allow my cat on the table- not ever. So, for me, a dead, uncooked animal on the table is less than appetizing. A look to my right revealed a stag's head staring morosely down at me. A look forward and a taxedermied duck was set in perma-flight behind the counter. I'm not a prude when it comes to my surroundings. I love some shock value and I adore when store's get unique. But the dead animals everywhere... well, it made me a bit squeamish to the tell you the truth! The psychological process of that is dead animals= dirty, dirty environment= dirty food. I'm sorry, Gaslight. But this is just how it is. About the coffee, my Burundi was delivered to me from one of the barista's himself (I thought that that was really nice!). Moment of truth: I took a sip, and POW! A JOLT of a caffeine hit me. I thought- wow, if I need a pick me up, this is the place to do it. It didn't have a bad flavor to it, from what I could taste, but the taste was sadly lost underneath the strength of the beverage. Then, the same barista who'd delivered my drink came over. Let's call him Frank. Frank came over and gave me a bit of a tortured, yet moral look. He said, "We have a problem." Alarmed, I went over in my head all of the things that could be wrong. Had my credit card not gone through? Were people not allowed to do personal tours through Gaslight? All right, I never said that I was rational when under pressure on that one. He began again, slowly, "You see, with the Burundi, there's this... bug that burrows deep with the beans..." Uh oh. I tuned out for a bit, freaked out that the words "problem" and "bug" were associated with the beverage I'd just taken a sip of. He had me smell my coffee. "Does it smell like potatoes? That's a sign." It did. It smelled exactly like potatoes. He offered me any beverage on the menu as an apology, and said that the Burundi had been giving them a lot of issues lately. I did appreciate his sincerity and that he alerted me to the issue instead of just letting me continue drinking it, but will I be back? Is this the best cup in Chicago? Well, overall, it was interesting. As a new cafe, Gaslight has some really good things going for it. The new coffee I was brought was decent, though not the best. There really is a lot of potential here. But honestly, Gaslight needs to work out the kinks in order to make me a regular. And the dead animals... they've got to go. Dead animals and talk about bugs in my coffee was way too much for me. If I'm ever in the neighborhood, I may peer in and see if anything has changed, but at the end of the day, I will be frequenting another cafe instead. read more

If you yearn for the WHAM WHAM WHAM of a barista banging out grounds from an espresso press, if you want someone to make you a drink that THEY would want to drink, if you want a step above SBUX quality and avoid the Dbags uber-hipsters that pollute the coffee with their pretentiousness... Then this might be the place for you. Yes. this is a hip coffee cafe. Yes. they did a great job with the space. Yes. it takes a while to get your drink... but that what makes it worth the trip. The space is beautifully renovated but this place falls short on value and overall vibe. I ordered an 8 oz. Americano and a 12 oz. coffee and my bill came to $5. That's $1.50 more than I would pay at Starbucks. If the coffee was infinitely superior to the bucks I could have justified the extra $$$ but sadly it was not. Also, the vibe was stiff and full of pretense. I go to a coffee shop in the morning to relax and chill so this atmosphere was generally not conducive to my needs. I came in this past Sunday and sadly my opinion of Gaslight hasn't changed. For someone who can live in a coffee shop for an entire day, I think the environment is just alright - it's a little bit more "sterile" than Wormhole or Ipsento, but has plenty of seating, great lighting, and is a good place to hang out. You can choose from a table or grab a seat at the bar and watch the baristas do their magic. The coffee/espresso is a bit lacking. I ordered a latte, and the espresso tasted extremely bitter; I barely enjoyed the latte even after I added a shit ton of sugar to it (cause we all know sugar makes everything taste better). My friend felt the same way about her coffee. There just really isn't much to say about this place - average atmosphere, average drinks, no specialty drinks, and sadly, my latte art wasn't even that good as those that are shown on Yelp. My girlfriend and I were staying nearby and came in on a rainy Saturday morning. It has a nice corner location with lots of natural light. The inside is pretty spacious with a few tables. It is a good local coffee shop to socialize, work, or people-watch. It's quiet but not awkwardly silent and not boring. Hipster would be a very accurate way to describe the place, but not in any kind of negative context. I got a cappuccino, my girlfriend a hot chocolate, and we split a ham & cheese croissant. Both of our drinks were delicious and the croissant was better than expected too. It is easy to tell that Gaslight offers quality coffee products and even food. I did notice some other food items that I would certainly like to try next time I'm in. It is a little pricey for what it is, although not much out of reach compared to something like Starbucks. I tend to hold cafe's to a higher standard, I'm from Brooklyn (of the New York variety) and I would be arrogant enough, yet justified in saying, we have the best coffee shops in the world. I believe the success of a cafe can be attributed to a few rudimentary but greatly overlooked qualities - it's just coffee, not magic. I meannn what is the hiring process at THIS coffee shop? There must be stipulations in order to be employed as a hipster barista here, you must 1. Be apathetic to anything and everything, 2. Be so soft spoken and quiet that people could only hear you by summoning demons from the Necronomicon and ask them WTF you just said, 3. Detest any and every MALE that walks into the café who isn't, Anton LaVey, H.P. Lovecraft, or Barbra Streisand, and 4. Practice witchcraft daily. What is it that we all love about coffee shops? It's really simple actually, strong but delicious coffee, good music, a warm and welcoming atmosphere with interesting and/or attractive people. The "coffee" could vaguely be called as such because it tasted more like someone who just drank real coffee peed into a cup, which mind you was only equally as warm but not nearly as flavorful. And although the awkward mortuary like atmosphere in this shop encourages absolute funeral-like-silence and stillness, you are made to stand up, walk over to the counter (with the judgmental barista overlooking their work like Rasputin above the Gulag) pick up the urine-like-substance, and as if you are a monkey on a circus tightrope, carefully walk back to your micro sized table meticulously carrying an overly full cup of said pee-coffee, clanking and spilling all the way back. All this whilst, of course, everyone stares at you in disgust and disdain, a problem perhaps easily solved if the music wasn't going on and off as if the Witch baristas were in a collective seance communicating with dead customers who had previously drank their pee-coffee, but instead only managed to channel terrible MGMT songs through a sound system that someone donated to goodwill in 1997. I have certainly been gaslighted, I left questioning my own sanity, like Macbeth being called by the coven of WITCHES, as well as feeling like I was severely molested (and ironically I happen to be catholic). read more

I'm in this joint right now writing this review unbeknownst to the two hipsters behind the counter. I must say, I really dig this place. I ordered an Americano which is wonderful as was the kind and competent service. I asked Tristan about them roasting their own beans and he was kind enough to bring me back to the roaster and show/explain to be about the process. I smelled the green coffee beans which have a strong floral/vegetable scent... Never knew that. I'm sporting a very anti-hipster, if not 80's, look (jeans and a navy blue sport coat) and feel perfectly comfortable. Dig that they are jammin' Toto and other great tunes. read more

I really like having Gaslight as another coffee option in Logan Square. I don't really fit in at Starbucks, or New Wave, and especially at Mustache...so I think this place might be in my wheel house. I came here on two occasions and ordered the drip, and then the pour over coffee the second time. Both were great cups of coffee. I have to say that you'll end up waiting a little longer than you might at other coffee shops, but I think it's worth it. I also ordered the charcuterie plate which I felt was a bargain. The staff was friendly and gave us more bread to finish off our cheese. I would suggest that they slice the bread thinner since they give you so much sausage and cheese. The drink menu is much more limited compared to your average coffee spot. The space is nice, with a more grown up hipster clientele. read more

I went in based on all the positive reviews I heard and was disappointed to find a very limited and overpriced menu. Their drip coffee takes a backseat to Dunkin' Donuts and the pour-over is obscenely expensive for me to even consider. I'll admit i'm a bit of a coffee snob, but I'd sooner get my coffee from the 7-eleven across the street than go back there. It's severely lacking. SF has lots of coffee. I'm a bit sick of coffee snobs. and coffee joints with their "special" ways of making coffee. Came here and was wowed by the huge ceilings, the roomy workspaces, and the weird game on the walls. (They had a spray-painted gold goose that was real, stuffed rabbit, pheasant (?), and a deer (?) head, AND a jarred human hand skeleton). It felt like any snobbish coffee joint. But. The coffee was fresh. had ALL the flavor notes they advertised (took a sip of C's). My tea was perfect (Rooibos). And J claims that espresso was crazy. They gave water to cleanse the palate before he had his espresso... but he said he needed that water as a chaser. haha. Anyway, really great coffee. Regret not buying the beans. read more

Excellent, high-quality coffee and espresso and a nice hybrid of two reknowned San Francisco coffee shops: the decor and music style (quality tunes played on vinyl) of Fourbarrel and the limited, yet gourmet food selections of Blue Bottle. Almost like a laid-back Intelligentsia... Love their espresso service and pour-over, varied seating options, and that they carry Topo Chico. Don't Love (yet giving benefit of the doubt considering they just opened, and because I can be overbearing/ask a lot of questions at coffee shops): When I asked girl behind the counter which beans she likes right now, she said they're all good. Fair enough, I'm sure they are, and in hindsight, I appreciate her seeming disinterest in my question (if I had asked this at Intelligentsia or Star Lounge, I would have gotten a five-minute answer). Then I asked if whole bean bags of coffee weigh 12 or 16 oz., she said 16 oz. (wrong, owner interjected right away and said 12 oz.). Then I asked if purchase of a bag of coffee comes with a free coffee or espresso (like Intelligentsia), she said no (owner interjected again and said yes, however I am not sure if this is their policy or if he was just appeasing me). Overall, very happy that I can buy whole beans from someplace else besides my other standbys, Star Lounge and Intelligentsia. Delicious espresso and coffee, friendly people working there, good music, clean and comfortable. I'll be back soon. --and a prediction: keep an eye out for newly installed bike racks right in front; they should definitely qualify for some, they'll need more bike parking ASAP. read more

I'm still torn about this place. I'll have to go a few times more and give an update review. But for now here are my thoughts. I love the space. It's beautiful. I'm not sure what you would call it but it looks very vintage masculine chic I would say. The dark furniture is nice. There's taxidermy of different animals throughout. I was telling my friend as I was observing the room that I would love to rent the place out of a party. As for the coffee...I love it and drink it often. However I like light to medium coffees. Their coffee while I'm sure is very good to others just doesn't fit my fancy. I had a regular drip coffee so I'll have try some of their other drinks. I did like the coffee condiment station. It was very pretty and homey. Everything was in containers that you would just help yourself to whatever you need. There were no individual packets of sugars. It was nice. When I go to a coffee shop I'm either there to work or to visit and chat with friends. This place is definitely a place to go and socialize. I wouldn't feel right being in there working. They place cool music from a record player which I thought was pretty classy. Overall if you were to ask me what I thought of Gaslight I would just say "Eh..." and shrug. I thoroughly enjoy coffee, so I was excited to try this place. First of all, the drip coffee is good and strong. There is a sharp taste when you drink it black (like I do), but I'm sure with a little cream or milk that would mellow out a bit. The ambiance is chill, and the space is wide and open. It's great for working or reading, which many people were doing. The reason why this is getting 3 stars is solely due to service. Consistent tasty coffee, quiet and peaceful vibe when I stay to do work, very nice people working there, minimal and non-distracting design so I can't get too off-topic when I'm working. Cute guys and pretty ladies (just an observation!). I had a cheese plate type snack once and it hit the spot. The first time I dropped in, I didn't know where to find a menu (look up top or it's on the countertop by the register). I keep it simple though, and always just get plain ol' drip coffee, so it's not a bother for me. Just a heads up, though. Oh! And try to sit far from the door! It's getting all wintery, and it gets cold when the door keeps opening and closing (there isn't one of those door cover thingys up that some places have in winter...I would highly recommend one, if anyone from Gaslight is reading this! I'm torn on the rating ... The coffee and canele here is definitely a 4 star quality but the service was unfortunate. The barista had an edge of contempt in her voice and really had no interest in serving anyone that morning. Honestly ... The coffee was very good compared to Bowtruss and far better than Intelligentsia up the street. It was flavorful with a natural note of cocoa and the acidity was low so you didn't that the bitter note most people complain about dark roast. The canele had the perfect crust with a nice eggy custard middle. I would be so happy with this choice if it wasn't for the eye rolls by the barista. If she was just neutral in her expression... Easily a 4 star experience. read more

I went in this morning looking to buy ground coffee beans, but there were none on the shelf. When I asked at the counter, the barista took me aside and explained that they were filling the bags at the moment. He talked about each of the types that they sold, asked which kinds of tastes I was looking for, and made an excellent recommendation. It was unusual how knowledgeable he was about their coffee beans. I was happy to order a bag (which they ground for me as I waited) and I left with a fresh bag. They also provide a free shot or drip with the purchase of a bag of coffee, so I got to sip as I waited for their grinding to finish. This turned out to be one of the best coffee-buying experiences I've had in the city. I'd recommend them to anyone near Logan Square. read more

Ninth stop on Chicago caffeine crawl. Gaslight, Oh Gaslight. You are perfect. You have so many dead animals lying around that even a hunk of roadkill would feel at home here. So many hipsters flock to your premises that you could put a hipster factory out of business. And there are more human hands in jars here than I have ever seen anywhere else. Thank you for being who you are. Doesn't it sound wonderful? For real, it is. So wonderful in fact that I had to stop here again on the way back through Chicago. Of the eleven coffee shops I went to in Chicago, this was my favorite. Favorite by a slight margin over other places but favorite nonetheless. The first time was early in the morning, right after it opened. It was very calm and peaceful at that hour, with all the soft colors and natural materials. My pour-over was a winner in my book. In fact it won a prize for being slightly better than any other coffee I had in Chicago. Maybe it was because it was the next morning and I was more ready for coffee again. And I'm not sure where they get their pastries from but that place should get some kind of award, or at least a five star review. Canelé and almond croissant. The next time was around noon and Man it was hopping, with an incredibly high hipster to other people ratio. I got a fairly great espresso pulled on the La Marzocco Strada. I also picked up a bag of in house roasted Ethiopian beans for home use. **Warning- blunt ending approaching** It turned out decently in aeropress and siphon, even though it seemed like I had a hard time getting proper body out of it or something. Talk about hipster. Coming from spending a lot of time in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I easily made myself at home. This place had been recommended to me by a friend who lives in the area. I could see now why. There's a ton of seating, cool rustic atmosphere, and a pretty extensive menu with drinks and food. I just got a drip coffee, but I could really taste the crisp flavor of the coffee beans. I was surprised for a Saturday afternoon that there were a ton of people working and eating a late brunch. For the amount of tables there were, I was only able to find a seat at their bar off to the side of the espresso machine. Their wifi is good, which is always a big plus in my book. I DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND HOW YOU CAN RUN A COFFEE SHOP AND ONLY HAVE ONE SIZE OF ICED COFFEE!! What is this?! Communist Russia?? Jeeblets, when I ask for a large Iced Coffee, I don't expect to get a 12oz coffee, i expect to get A LARGE MOTHER EFFING COFFEE. Bow Truss, I'm looking at you too. This is completely preposterous. Maybe it's on me though for coming back many times hoping for a different result. Additionally, I don't now if my plebeian taste buds are too unsophisticated to enjoy this bitter-af coffee, or if everyone else is just lying and pretending it's really good. Every new coffee shop that pops up reminds me how freaking good Cafe Mustache is. Even though *snooty voice* they don't roast their beans onsite. The three stars mainly go for the interior design and the super friendly staff. And because I feel like a d-bag giving a local place that has really done nothing to me less than 3 stars. Logan Square is quickly becoming a coffee fanatic's haven with so many coffee shops around. I usually frequent another coffee shop down the street, but wanted to go here to pick up some local coffee for my dad's Father's Day gift. Their weekend hours are a little weird as in Sunday, they open up later than on Saturday. I wish that I would have remembered this when I was strolling around with my son. When I finally got to Gaslight while it was open, it's only okay. If they roast their own coffee, you wouldn't know it. Their coffee doesn't seem to be heavily marketed in the cafe at all. I had to find where they put the bags of beans. I did have one of their pain au chocolat's. Oh my, it was delicious. Their iced coffee is okay, but nothing spectacular. I'm honestly not sure what they are marketing themselves as since it's a beautiful coffee shop, but the service is lackluster. I know that I'm a stroller toting mom with an infant in tow. I'm not what hipsters want to see in the morning, I get that. Guess what, my son's awake and it's nice out, so we stroll the neighborhood. I need coffee or chai after my early wake ups with my son. The service just seemed so cold the few times I've been in there with my son in his stroller. I get treated a lot better down the street from a much smaller shop with a warm staff. Overall, it's an aesthetically pleasing coffee shop, but I don't think I'm their target customer. read more

This coffee shop may be one of my favorite coffee shops in Chicago, which could say a lot since there are so many. I ordered a perfect americano which was delicious! (Americano weren't on the menu) It was the ideal temperature and the espresso was incredibly balanced. The service was great! When arriving we were greeted and though the shop was busy, the line went rather quick. They were incredibly friendly. Something I noticed is that unlike most coffeeshops, they do not charge extra for soy, breve, or flavors. My friends ordered pastries with their coffee, chocolate croissant, which I would suggest, it was light, flaky, and not overly sweet. The environment was bright, clean, and inviting. I'm not sure why I waited so long to review this place, but hey, better late than never. Gaslight Coffee roasters is one of my favorite places in Logan Square, and easily one of the best coffee spots in the city. Perfect espresso shot EVERY TIME. I know this may sound like a simple task, but for me, a perfectly pulled shot of espresso is one of the most simple yet delicious things in the world. Unfortunately, in this starbuckdonalds culture it's not often appreciated or done correctly. As usual I am in the minority, but I have to add my two cents. I live in Logan Square and do not visit coffee houses regularly but I met two Logan Squarers here for a planning session for our group. It was 7:30 on a weeknight. I was expecting to find a little something sweet or salty for my beverage, but they had only one stale Madeleine and one large cookie that was apparently vegan. They had no decaf - I suppose they are following the Starbucks trend in that - so I ordered a bergamot tea. It was lukewarm and had leaves at the bottom. Not impressed. Music was an interesting mix.
