Where to start?! This place is absolutely charming. The staff has been friendly and accommodating from the get-go and our cabin is perfect. Our first day was spent exploring. We ate dinner in the cabin. They've stocked the place with cookware, a cutting board, decent knives and utensils, plates, bowls, and drink ware. (The view out the kitchen window is of the airstrip!) We had brunch our second day. The restaurant is lovely. The waitstaff is friendly. We made reservations for brunch and dinner (the resort recommends reservations). We were greeted and seated quickly. The food options were aplenty. Everything from peach stuffed French toast to chicken wings! They have something for everyone. The place was busy but the buffet lines move quickly! River access and boat ramps are all over the place and marked clearly. They offer guided fishing trips and boat rentals. The grounds have a public fire pit and a few gazebos, all well-maintained. There is a playground for the kids, a tennis court, a pool (closed for the season), an arcade (no quarter machine), a duck pond, lots of nature trails, and a gift and tackle shop. The woman working the check-in desk/gift shop explained that we could charge everything to the room (even tips for the waitstaff) so that we wouldn't have a bunch of little transactions for the whole weekend, which I thought was smart. The food and service were excellent. We were hungry from traveling most of the morning and decided to have an early dinner. We enjoyed watching the hummingbird feeders from our table while we dined. The chicken fried chicken was amazing I got and my husband loved the pan seared trout he got with the mushroom hollandaise sauce he added. So my friends and I decided to have a mid afternoon dessert with a beautiful view last minute. There were not many cars in the lot on a Saturday afternoon at 2:30. When we arrived there were three hostesses behind the desk chatting about personal things and took a good 3-4 minutes to be bothered to look up and welcome us. We were the only ones in the lobby and could see the restaurant was near empty. They asked if we had a reservation. We told them no but she proceeded to act as though they may not have room for us. It was as if this was a High End white tablecloth type place. lol. After standing for another 5 minutes she took us to a table with a beautiful view of the River. There was literally 1 other table that we could see with patrons. We were seated at a table with paper placemats and handed paper menus. Our waiter arrives a few minutes later and when we explained we were only there for coffee and dessert he was clearly annoyed. He served our coffee and took our order. It took almost 20 minutes for our pre-made not house made desserts to show up. Although they were decent certainly not homemade. Lol. Before he walked away we asked for a refill on the coffee since we all had drank ours and the waters were empty. He was so annoyed that he had to make another trip for us. Up on finishing the same girl that seated us was seating another table close to us. The 3 gentlemen realized they had a large table of friends up stairs and proceeded to ask if it was okay if they went up there with them. They obviously had room at the long table but she caught attitude. Again. I paid $50 + tip for coffee, dessert and attitude. Clint Gaston, the owner made contact regarding my review. He put me in touch will Rick the Chef/ Restaurant manager. Both of them in invited me back as a courtesy for my previous experience.. I found there level of Professionalism to be highly Respectable and greatly appreciated! I decided that on my last evening in Arkansas I would give Gaston's a second try to allow myself to see the Best of cooking that they prepare. I ordered 1/2 rack of rib, which comes with potatoes of choice, green beans ( fresh and slightly eldante and a trip to the salad bar. My dinner came plated beautifully. Hot half rack of ribs Tantalizing my taste buds with the a mini gravy boat filled with BBQ sauce. They were quite big and had a smokey flavor. Dessert was a Keylime pie that Chef Rick is very proud of. We had a very nice evening and I Applaud a restaurant that stands behind their long standing brand and Extremely Professional customer satisfaction. We started coming here after we found a story about Gaston's in a flying magazine. The crew chauffeured us to an annual BBQ event (great timing for us!) and was really available for anything we needed. We come approximately once every 2 years, and wish we could carve out opportunities more frequently. Our needs and plans have evolved over time, but the service we've received has remained first class. That includes the restaurant, fishing guides, and even refilling of firewood :) My husband and I both travel for a living, so consistent great service means so much to us! Gaston's is family owned since 1958 and they are one friendly bunch which aims to please their guests. They have grown by leaps and bounds with over 70 fishing boats and plenty of cottages. They have their own museum, a state of the art dock, tennis courts, hiking trails, their own airstrip for small planes and a beautiful swimming pool. Gaston's is located along the White river, in the Ozark mountains in Arkansas. If you catch a trout in the crystal clear mountain waters, you have the choice of throwing it back or turning it in to be cooked at their restaurant and served to you for lunch or dinner or to take it with you. We really wanted to love this place, but it did not happen. Gaston's has an amazing setting right on the White River and the decor is well done. The food was good, but not exceptional. The one thing that ruined our trip was staff attitude. Not sure who does the staff training, but if you trained them to make people feel unwelcome, you hit the mark! From the moment we walked up to the hostess desk, to the server, the staff just does an amazing condescending gig! First we were greeted with ,"Do you have a reservation?" We said "no", in all fairness, it was 4 pm, I was just on their website and it said nothing about needing reservations. The next statement was a snarky little "well are you guests of the resort?" Again we were feeling the sting when we had to say "no" to that one too. I know, like how dare we try to eat there? There was already one couple seated in the huge place, but apparently, we would push the seating capacity to a limit of 4 people! But Madam Hostess finally broke and said she "would seat us anyway." I wasn't sure if we should have dropped to our knees and thanked her profusely or turned around and left. Since we were really hungry, we sucked it up and let her charitable act take us to a seat. The real bizarre thing was that while Madam Hostess was deciding if we were worthy, another staff member took a phone call. I only overheard her end, but she declined to make a reservation for that person. I was confused as to how they actually get patrons???? The server wasn't quite as bad, probably only got a "C+" in snarky class. He kind of scoffed when we skipped the appy because we were really hungry. I felt that it was a little weird that they wouldn't offer an alternate selection for the dinner salad, but hey, we were already on unfavored status. I did not complain and politely declined the salad I could not eat. But what was really strange was that when he brought our food, he said "they normally make you wait 20 minutes, but since we said we were hungry, they did us a favor and sped it up." Again, why would they want to make us feel like we are imposing? Well....by that time we were the second table of the afternoon/night and a third table was being seated as we were being served, the kitchen was probably feeling the heat!! 2014 was our 3rd visit to Gastons. The first two were riding trips this one was a family fishing vacation. The staff is top Notch. We were here during extremely stormy weather and the kind folks actually came to our cabin and asked if I wanted to park my bike in the hangar! She stayed there our whole trip! Our rooms were impeccable, we had kitchen units and they were outfitted to the max! Right down to salt and pepper! We had 15 folks in our group from 4 to 64 and everywhere in between. No one was disappointed! The dining room/ gift shop/ tackle shop staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The food is divine and what child is not thrilled with the peacocks, airplane landings and catching a fish steps away from the cabin door! We will be back! Gaston's is a beautifully maintained resort directly on the White River! They have their own boat dock to dock your boat (first come first serve for the slip, locks up at 5:00pm) or you can rent a long boat from them per hour or for the day. The dock will even clean your fish and send it up to the restaurant to be prepared for dinner! The dock has very clearly been well maintained! There is a long hiking trail loop located at the far end of the resort. A large landing strip through the middle where private planes land and take off all day. Such a fun thing to watch! The grounds are incredibly well maintained and it's clear they take great pride in their resort. Lodging: We rented a single cabin with a king and double bed. There was a 1/2 fridge, microwave, and coffee pot. It also had a LARGE bathroom, much larger than the bigger cabins offered. Firewood and ice are provided to all guests! All cabins overlook the river! My only complaint is the bedding. The sheets were so thin you could almost see through them. Investing in new bedding will go a long way with guests. The comforters, omg, so old. They are colors (teal and purple) straight from the 90's maybe even 80's. I had to call down to make sure they are washed between guests, which they assured me they are. In the future, I will take all of my own bedding. Restaurant: We made reservations in advance for the on site restaurant which we heard and read so many great things about. I wish our experience would have been like all the positive reviews we read. We spent over $300 on dinner and drinks for 4 and I really wish we would have saved our money. Although the food was tasty (2 surf and turfs (over $50 each), 1 filet mignon, and 1 sirloin steak), the plates were freezing cold. The salads were all different, some people got different kinds of lettuce, some got tomatoes, some got cucumbers, some didn't. It was very strange that salads aren't all prepared the same way. Rolls never showed up. Our drinks were the slowest part of the whole meal! We ordered a second round right as our entree's arrived, but they didn't show up until our food was almost finished! At that point, we didn't even want them. The server said the bar was packed and the bartender was struggling to keep up. I took a peak at the bar and there were many 20 guests in there. If you can't manage the restaurant and a bar, either don't have both, or have more staff. The manager seemed to walk around and talk to guests the entire night, but I never saw him pick up any slack from the servers or bartender. The service was so slow that I don't know if I can even recommend paying for the overpriced food here. COVID precautions: reservations required, masks required for guests not seated and to enter/exit, masks required for staff (none covered their noses while wearing their masks, this should have been a requirement!), decreased occupancy. read more

My advice would be to not listen to what others are saying about the staff. My sister and I spent the day at the caves and hiking and decided to come here to eat. The staff was amazing!! hostess was rude and didn't acknowledge us when we came in. she more worried about the shift change and that she was "supposed to be off already." once we were acknowledged and told her we had a reservation it still took her 5 minutes to figure out where to put us in an empty restaurant. (it was 2:00pm on a sunday) we asked for a table by the window and she said "eh it'll be kiiinda by the window" once seated she decided she didn't want us at that table and made us move. (farther from the window at that) waitress was decent but did not know the menu well. we were told the chicken breast dinner is grilled. it definitely is not. it has a breading and everything. she didn't ask how our food was even once and when she brought our appetizer plates she put her fingers ON the part where the food goes! the food was okay, NOT worth the price. i had the gastons burger and fries. i liked the bun better than the actual burger patty and I ate more fries than burger. My dad couldn't even finish his food it was so bad and it's rare my dad doesn't finish his plus mine! Also, another waiter decided to chime in on our tables conversation as he was walking by. rude! The 2 stars are because the view was pretty and the french fries were good. Unfortunately the staff was probably some of the worst I've ever seen. I will not be returning for a long time. read more

Wow can't believe they only have 3 stars on yelp. This place is so great. I've come here off and on for the last 25 years--both by car and airplane (to their beautiful grass strip). This place is just incredible. Great service, beautiful surroundings and a true white river experience. The accommodations are no frills/1960s style rooms with wood paneling. They are clean and tidy. There isn't a bad view at this place. The restaurant is excellent--and many complain that the wait is too long, etc but it's just that popular. We recently stayed as a family for 3 nights with our 3 children. They had a blast! We are coming back in October. Unlike a traditional fancy resort they get a laid back nature experience. We even used the small pool that they loved. The fishing is excellent--and the guides are great. Tip: make sure to make reservations for dinner when you check in that way you aren't waiting around. Also be advised that they only do room reservations over the phone and may have to leave a message and they call you back. They still make the reservations on a large paper calendar. At first I thought it annoying but later realized that they have a proven method and are staying with their tradition. Enjoy your trip! read more

Such a tranquil place to relax with friends and or family. I only went here a couple of times as part of a fishing trip, but the time I did spend here were some of the best. Gaston's Resort isn't much, but what it does have is great. We stayed in the cabins and if you step out the back door you see nothing but the river flowing which we took advance of on the second day. Out the front door, is a wide open grassy field used for private puddle jumper planes to land, however my friends and I used it as a football field that was great level place. I wish I had an occasion to go back soon. It is truly a wonderful place. read more
