This is the only 5 star review I've ever given. I don't believe in perfection. The Gastro burger could be the greatest burger I've ever had. My companion got the keto thing. The burgers are legit beefy. The fries although they come from a good service carrier we're very unique, light and airy. We also had jalapeño appetizer bacon wrapped. Often times the bacon is held on with a toothpick. These weren't and were awesome. We are going out for lunch tomorrow and I wish we were going her. I bartender (Jennifer I believe) was awesome. Any travel from our path Fort Wayne to/from Chicago should include this place. Locals run there. read more

Visiting the area for a wedding and stopped by for lunch. The place was very clean and service was top notch with the bartender coving both the bar and the tables. We had the ghost burger (excellent) and a bowl chicken tortilla soup (soup of the day). Kids had chicken tenders and the brownie for dessert. All was prepared well and tasted great. read more

Check you Bill before you pay!!! They charge a "convenience fee" of 3.5% for using a credit card, but they bring the bill WITH THE FEE ON IT! I had to tell the server that I was paying cash, and then he removed the fee. The server said "we put that in all our bills because most people pay with a credit card". Scam, and seems illegal, if you ask me. Will not be back. read more

I got the chicken cob salad it was super duper yummy and absolutely huge j couldnt finish it but it was still good so i took the rest home. The server was super nice and attentive to us (prolly cuz we were like the only ones there) but they were still really nice and fast. Cute little dive bar feel with a family dining area. Decent greasy burgers and sides. My big problem with this place is the hood ventilation in the kitchen. When you walk in, at first you think you're in a smoking bar because of the mist in the room. It's actually grease vapors from the deep fryer and griddle. You can smell it and breath it which is pretty nasty. The ventilator needs to be taken apart, totally cleaned up, new filters and maybe redesigned. Under the blower outside there is literally a 1' tall "stalagmite" of grease standing proud and grease running down the roof. That's nasty, yo! read more

We stopped in here for dinner on a Wednesday night bc our restaurant of choice was closed. I'm very happy to say we were pleasantly surprised to find great food and drinks as well as a solid serving staff. Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers are wonderful. This place could EASILY have a five-star review! We've eaten here five times so far. I've had the nachos, and several different burgers. My favorite is the Molten Lava burger. The food is excellent, especially for Chesterton. The fries are crispy, well seasoned, and salted just right. The burger was full of crisp veggies, fresh sliced tomatoes, and the spices were perfectly balanced. The bun is toasted and buttered, and I can see they take their grilling seriously. I have to remove a star because of the very slow service, and the dingy atmosphere. The location is great, but the building itself is dark, sticky, and feels like a college bar. The service is super friendly, but very slow. Each time we've eaten there, it has taken over an hour from the time we sat down until we left. Today it was over 20 minutes before we even had our order taken, and I had to go flag down the waiter. There were two other tables seated, and a couple at the bar. No reason why it should have taken that long, but the food was worth it. Overall, it gets four stars, and we will come here again. I'd really like to see the service get a boost, and the building get a "deep clean." You guys have 80% of a winning solution, and with the talent in the kitchen, could easily have a top class dining location in Chesterton! Make it happen! read more

This place was a combination sports bar, family dining & patio. The menu has a good variety & there's a large selection of beers, both craft & standard. Food portions were big & delicious. Service was great & we enjoyed beer, appetizer & burger/sandwich. The menu prices were a little high but seemed appropriate for the quality & selection. I guess they were having an off night as when we arrived it was a time that over whelmed the restaurant. I do not know if he was the manager or owner yet the gentleman apologized for the delay in completing our order that we put in. There was a definite problem with the expedition this evening and it seemed excuses were the norm for this. It took over 40 minutes to receive our food and it was a disaster at that point. My wife's olive burger looked quite nasty and as she thought it looked like dog puke with some kind of nasty stuff poured over it. My burger initially seemed all right yet the chefs did not pay proper attention to the preparation of the burger as the cheese paper was left on it which I ate into and it grossed me out. As we attempted to eat our meal I became instantly disgusted by eating the cheese paper from the cheese slice. My wife was disgusted by the presentation of her olive burger. With all of this my son lost his appetite and my daughter was not impressed with her mahi mahi fish tacos. It was so bad that we decided to leave a lot quicker as everything was quite disappointing. Everyone is entitled to an off night yet it seemed from the manager or owner kept making excuses as the kitchen was overwhelmed with a huge surge of patrons to the restaurant. That personally tells me that this place is not able to handle a rush to the size that they received when we arrived. The manager or owner comped everything yet it does not completely make up for the lack of execution of the food that they offer. If a restaurant is not able to properly execute on expediting the orders of their customers how do they survive. If the chefs are not putting in the effort to make sure everything is done properly and with care they should not be in business. read more

I've gotta say when we stepped in here, I wasn't blown away when I walked in even though I had seen all the 4 & 5 star reviews. However, I think the charm of this place is the service and draft selection. For those who don't know, NW Indiana is a really great place for craft beer! They happened to have Zombie Dust (3 Floyds), and as it's not easily found in central IN, my husband and I were happy to settle in, have a few beverages and watch the ND game. I had the flatbread which was tasty. I think I could make a similar dish at home as the crust looked premade, but I liked the down home taste. Husband had the cheese sticks which he thoroughly enjoyed. The "49" stands for Old SR 49 which used to run by there. Gastro 49 feels like an old comfortable shoe. The staff was so friendly and attentive. We weren't there on a busy day, but it was still nice. If we lived here, I could see this being a regular hangout. Excellent burgers. So good in fact we went both nights we were in town. We got the giant 1 lb one to share then the namesake burger the second night. Super juicy patty, very flavorful, and plenty of fries to share. The bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers are a must try. These are unique because instead of the breading they wrapped it in super crisp bacon. Perfect salty, spicy, gooey bite. We also tried the fried cheese curds which were unfortunately underwhelming. Teeny tiny curds with a bit too much batter and the portion was surprisingly small. Especially compared to everything else. I like my cheese curds melty and stretchy when you bite into it. These pieces were simply too small. Prices are reasonable, service is excellent, and they have outdoor seating that allows dog! Overall excellent experience. This place is better than I thought it would be. The place is clean, well lit, and non smoking. The food is okay. I am a big pulled pork fan and this sandwich just didn't cut it. Me and my family were coming back from the dunes and were looking for a place to eat for the day and we found Gastro's. The restaurant is a small place but still very quaint and has a great feel to it when you sit down. Very friendly and liked how the owner even engaged with us at different times we where there. The was not bad, let me say that off the bat but I did notice small things. The meat in my burger while very juicy and could of been seasoned a bit more, and it was supposed to have a garlic sauce that I didn't taste. I'm a very big of garlic and was disappointed when I didn't really taste it. My gf burger was also good but not great and my daughters nachos was good but it didn't have enough cheese. So it wasn't a bad experience and if I ever come back in this direction I would give it another try. read more

We were greeted/seat immediately by the owner, Roly, who was extremely friendly and personable. Our waitress was only on her second day but she did a great job! Excellent food, especially the appetizer menu and burgers. I can't oversell the Reuben eggrolls, they are so f'n good. I love all the burgers, but the quesadilla burger is my fave. Specials are worth trying out, and so are the Bloody Marys. They always have an option on Nitro and more than one cider. But the best thing about Gastro is the service. Wife and I both had the 1/2 lb Classic Pub Burger (hers with cheese, mine without). Burgers tasted like I had cooked them on the grill at home like one would expect. Mine was cooked well as requested and my wife's medium well, also as requested. Burgers came with no sauce condiment. Remedied easily with a personally added amount of ketchup. Other condiments were available upon request. We both chose tots as our sides. Only complaint would have been the oil used to cook the tots could be changed out. Otherwise, the food was delicious and exactly what you would expect of a simple and easy order. The service was excellent, warm and friendly. We were greeted upon entering and seated immediately wherever we wanted (It was a Wednesday around 1pm). There were another half dozen tables of folks. Food arrived and refills were provided in a timely manner. The dining area was separated into three; an outside patio (street side) which appeared to have been renovated, the pub/bar area with several pub height tables and the bar, of course. The family dining area had several tables of typical height. All three area appeared tidy and well kept. All in all, the place had a very hometown feel with the accompanying delicious food and comfortable ambiance. We will definitely return for a bite and a drink. read more

Horrible customer service with a to go order called and spoke to a Corrina who was taking my order. She seemed very impatient when taking my order like I was a bother. We go there weekly and they have now lost our business. Corrina hung up on me while I was asking her if there was a problem when I asked her to repeat my order. She had an attitude from the get go. Corrina hung the phone up on me.. I called back 2 times before someone else answered the phone.. I asked to speak to the manager and the lady that answered the phone said they don't have a manager there today. I then said we will not be back as I was speaking to the other lady on the phone the girl Corrina was in the back lying on the phone to the owner which was not the truth at all! From the moment I sat down, I knew Melissa D. had just been here on a bad night. The bartender, Mike, was very friendly, and poured my first drink right away. The regular patrons sitting at the bar near me were super friendly. I'm giving 5 stars, not because it was the best food, I've ever had, but because it was definitely better quality than what I was expecting. The Cobb salad was beautiful, and just as tasty as it looked. The hummus was awesome, nice spice to it with the fresh jalapeños, and the pita chips were delicious!
