A friend and I tried the new lunch specials for $7. We asked for a super-special house salad, and they delivered. The sausage and tortellini soup was fantastic. This was a fantastic find. Everything was really bright and clean. The service was some of the best I've had in a long time. He really went out of his way to be accommodating by bringing out the food for our kids first and putting cartoons on the TV- all without being asked. I had the Philly with tots and it was delicious. We had come here while camping at the Indiana Dunes before. We came back and again had friendly service and fantastic food. We started with fried pickles and mozzarella sticks but they have several great choices. For Entrees the Ghost Burger, Perch, and Chicken Wings. All where fabulous. We just finished our first experience at Gastro 49 and we loved it! Upon arrival we noticed their awesome patio, but since it was so hot (91*) we opted for the inside seating. We showed up on a Saturday evening at dinner time with 4 adults and 4 kids expecting to wait, but even though they were busy they still greeted us with a smile and seated us quickly! The beers were great and the food was delicious! The owner/manager (I'm not sure but seemed like he was in charge) was so nice... he was the one that seated us and was constantly checking in on tables, thanking people for coming, and being so personable. Parking lot is narrow on entrance and exit , but a bigger lot is in back . Atmosphere is nice. There was live music when I went , good band but a little too loud for a smaller place . ( There is also outdoor seating .) Food was good . I had the hummus platter for an appetizer . Hummus was spicy good with warm pita chips and cucumber as well. This place is a hidden gem! The food is amazing if you are looking for real bar food. The jalapeno poppers and reuben eggrolls were tasty and lived up to all reviews. My husband and I shared the muffaletta and the 49er burger--YUM! And the best part were the homemade chips and the french fries! Every part of the meal was delicious, but not diet friendly! Gastro 49 is a 5 star place! I give it 5 stars because the staff is really nice, the owner is very friendly and the ambiance is clean and cozy. This was our first time at Gastro 49 and the bartender and owner took the time to get to know us and make sure we felt very welcome. It isn't smokey so that is a plus for the area! The place is very comfortable to chill and have a few drinks and some food. There are a couple of murals painted on the walls that are kind of cool too. If you are looking to hang at a friendly neighborhood pub, I definitely would recommend Gastro 49. read more

My wife and I decided to try this place tonight for a date night and I'm so glad we did. We got there around 6 and the bar was pretty busy but they have a family seating area that was empty so we sat there. By time we were done it was packed. Everything was great from the service to the food to the pineapple cider. It was all very reasonably priced as well. Delicious food and a fun atmosphere. Menu has a great selection with lots of different burgers to choose from, but also plenty of salads, sandwiches, tacos, etc if a burger isn't your thing. Servers are attentive and friendly, but food takes a long time to come out- so plan to spend a little more time here. My favorite spot in Chesterton. I've lived here for 5 years and can't be happier we have a local joint like Gastro 49 around the corner. Best service around (even when busy, they are hustling and making sure everyone is taken care of.) Beer list is constantly changing so it's nice to be able to try something different every time. The food is outstanding. From the burgers to the tacos to all the appetizers, you will definitely find something you'll like or something new/different to try. My husband and I are Chicagoans, but love crossing the border to escape city life. Having a rare Saturday and holiday weekend off, I utilized Yelp to find places in Indiana for good food and craft brews. I saw that this place had favorable ratings and decided to run with it, plus, it was only an hour and a half away. I messaged the restaurant on Facebook to get their recommendations any nearby breweries we should add to the itinerary. I had already decided on a couple in Valparaiso. I was answered within a handful of minutes with several close by options and a thumbs up the other two I'd selected. "Roly" Martinez is the owner and admin of the page. He also asked when we were thinking of coming, which I inferred as warm and friendly, like a host wanting to be around for their guest, so immediately a great impression there! The drive up was a breeze. When we got there, the parking lot was huge (can accommodate many patrons easily), though quiet on a holiday weekend with a nearby fest happening. There appeared to be just a small patio in front for outdoor diners, but at least the offering. There were two entrances: The Bar (21 & over) and The Family (for dining). We went through the family entrance and found a large bar and several pub tables to the left and a dining room, the restrooms, and kitchen to the right. We chose left and were cheerily greeted by Jen ('Or Jenny, or Jennifer,' she said happily, she'd answer to whichever!) We took spots at the end of the bar and started perusing the beer and food menus. As we sat, there was a steady stream of regulars that came through for a "quick one," all of them exchanging pleasant banter with Jen, like they'd known each other for years despite her being a newer bartender. The beer listings included the run of the mill stuff, but then a much larger selection of local and other harder-to-gets from all over the country. There were several they were out of ('No Beer For You' humorously stamped across the selection, i.e. don't get your hopes up, lol), but I think those were bottles and we were interested in drafts, more specifically, flights. The beers we chose were cold and delicious and fine representations of IN, MI, and NH. So now the food. We ordered two apps and a salad and all were outstanding! We got the jalapeño poppers - TRUE poppers - halved, stuffed with cream cheese, and then wrapped in bacon, the rueben egg rolls, and a buffalo chicken salad. Six came to an order of the poppers, so easy to split with you BFF or sig other. The bacon was crisp and just enough heat on the jalapeño to feel it, but not cry. They were also served with a side of thick and creamy ranch dressing. The rueben egg rolls were crisp, not overly oily, and the corned beef tender and plentiful in the roll. I believe there were six of those as well. They didn't seem like your typical frozen rolls dropped in a fry vat. They were WAY better, having a house-made touch, and served with more creamy dressing, only thousand island this time. Finally, the salad: Beautiful mixed greens! No cheap ice berg lettuce! The chicken was not fried tenders (which I was expecting), but a sauteed breast with a nice crust on it but still moist inside. They sear the buffalo sauce right on the chicken and you could get mild, medium, or hot. I got the hot, but truth be told, it could've been hotter. The salad was big, enough to take a snack for later, and dressed generously with crumbled bleu cheese and bacon, avocado, hard boiled egg and tomato slices. I chose ranch dressing for it. We made small talk with Jen the entire time and suggestions to the couple next to us what to try beer-wise. I had asked Jen if Roly was around, but we had just missed him. He had a booth for his pizza place at that fest I'd mentioned, but get this... About 15-20 minutes into our visit, he bursts into the bar, full of life, and practically walks right up to my husband and I. I said, "You're Roly, aren't you?" And he said, "Sandi, right?" So after messaging him on Facebook and saying we'd be by in a couple of hours, he peeped my profile (he was a Chicago native until 12 years ago) and realized we had many friends in common through the music scene back home. He said, "I just had to leave the fest and meet you! Do you know who we both know???" And so we talked for at least a half an hour about the good ol' days, the "neighborhood," how he ended up in Indiana, and how much he absolutely loves Chesterton. This guy is such good people and I totally love this restaurant and bar! You gotta go. Final side notes: Cute decor. There's jazz type murals painted along the walls, though I don't know I'd call it a jazz bar, but still it was nice. Both sides were clean, roomy, and not so ambient lit that you couldn't read the menu. The bathrooms were large and very clean. And as you walked toward them, you passed the kitchen which could be easily seen into, also appearing very clean and organized. read more

Food is good. My complaint is the server named Jen. My fiance and I were there for our best friends birthday. We waited for our food for over an hour awhile we watched our friends eat. So my fiance went up to the bar to see why it was taking so long. So instead of Jen being a decent server, she decided to go up to the entire table and cause a scene and ruin our night. We stopped in here after going to the dunes on Sunday afternoon. I sure wish this place was close to home for us. The bartender Sarah was very knowledgeable about the craft beers and very attentive. The interior is remodeled and very clean. The food is amazing. The owner came over and and personally talked with us. I also noticed the way he spoke to and helped the employees when it got busier.
