We have loved coming to gatehouse tavern weekly so that I can get my favorite salmon with dill sauce. Tonight we went & I ordered what I thought was the salmon with dill sauce. When it came out it looked different. Turns out the "menu changed" and they no longer have that salmon or dill sauce!! Really?!? The people next to us came in for salmon tacos only to find out they too were discontinued! Sadly we won't be back. The manager easily could have come out to speak w us but he/she never did! Order the shrimp tacos with a side of broccoli. The tacos were OK but the broccoli was cold. Also ordered the hot Honey flatbread, it was OK. The middle part of the flatbread was very soggy. Service was OK. We sat in the bar area and it was dirty. She quickly wiped it but didn't really clean it well. I ordered a drink and my glass was dirty. Wasn't really impressed with this place. First time here on a Friday night with husband's co-workers for some kareok. I will have to say all the food we had at the table was excellent we got the loaded tater tots quesadillas grilled wings for appetizers. I ordered the mac daddy burger which was an excellent Burger my husband order buffalo chicken sandwich which he loved upgraded fries for tots. I got pasta salad for my side and it was excellent. This place is near our house so we have stopped several times to both dine in and for pick up. They have some items on their menu that are really great and others that are bland and boring. The service has been hit or miss, mostly miss. One day we may get excellent service and another it may seem the server forgot we were there, this can be when they are busy or when they are slow so there seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. For this reason, we haven't gone quite as often as we would lately as there are other places in Wake Forest with more consistent quality service. The only other thing we have noticed is that this place is seriously lacking in any diversity. read more

This was my first time trying this restaurant in Wake forest. It's more of a sports bar vibe, but the food was absolutely amazing. The pretzel sticks were so soft and the beer cheese was delicious. I loved how the red onion didn't over power the flatbread and the bbq sauce gave it a mix between sweet and salty. I will definitely be back!!! read more

Great local spot, we really want to love this place. We find ourselves here quite often. The food is good, the atmosphere is great and the service is always on point. Our last 3 trip's have not impressed, the food has been our only complaint, it can be hit or miss, we have a family of 5, sometimes it feels like maybe due to the size of the orders item's get rushed or sit and get cold, but we will find our way back to give it another shot. read more

Made reseveraton for a party of 13. Onces there we had the worst time.Server brought out 10 plates of food, then told us that he could only submit 6 orders at a time. Couldnt be bother to refill our drinks. Had plenty of time to sit outside with friends. Forgot to submit some of our order. Avoid this resturant unless you enjoy bad services and poor food. I'm from WI and anyone from the upper Midwest knows that what y'all call taverns down here are NOT bars. With that said, Gatehouse Tavern is a place I could see calling my local bar. I grabbed a drink there with my wife tonight and we were impressed. The place was clean and the staff were friendly. Our server in particular was VERY good. We weren't going to order food but saw some loaded tots pass by and I couldn't resist. They were tasty but my favorite part was the house made habanero hot sauce that our server offered when I asked for something spicy. It was the real deal and clearly fresh. I saw some plates go by with heaping sides of fries and pasta salad that looked tempting. We will go back sometime for sure. Thanks fellow Yelpers! First time here, after reading others' reviews. The two of us couldn't agree on Mexican or Italian, so we compromised and picked American. I insisted we go somewhere we've never been. And that's how we ended up at Gatehouse. Walking in, two things stood out: the place is surprisingly big, and on a Monday night at 6 pm, the bar seats were all taken. We sat at a high top, and immediately our waiter Justin brought menus, found out it was our first time, and broke down the menu options. We both settled on burgers after hearing they grind the brisket and shoulder together fresh every day, and the buns are also locally made. We got salad and sweet potato fries for sides. The Carolina burger comes with slaw and chili, the Peacemaker is bacon onion mushrooms. Both were tasty and juicy, cooked a perfect medium. There's some other choices on the menu that we've already said we can't wait to come back and try out. For atmosphere, service and taste, the five is a no brainer. read more

Everything was so crisp and fresh. The Caesar had way too much dressing and it's really overpowering. Gate House Tavern. Let me start by saying I have been eating at this restaurant for several years now and comfortable saying, this one of the finest restaurants in the Wake County area. I have had their crispy sweet and spicy chicken sandwiches, their burgers and now I have enjoyed their Reuben Sandwich. I would recommend any one of them or just try all. The Reuben is one of my all-time favorite sandwiches, which is ironic since when I was child I hated sauerkraut, but I bet if I my mother put one of these amazing sandwiches in front of me my eyes would have been opened. The saltiness from the corned beef, which I have to say, is tender as can be and melts in your mouth, complements the tangy and spicy flavor from the Thousand Island Dress. The mild flavor of the melted Swiss cheese, the delightful tanginess from the sauerkraut and the deep flavor from the Rye Bread helps bring all the incredible flavors together for the perfect savory bite. read more

We went on a Saturday night and were promptly seated. waitress got our drink orders and then we ordered dinner. I asked about the beet salad and asked if it was just beets or if it was mainly a salad over lettuce. Waitress said it was over arugula. I said I wanted a salad, with the main part being greens and a few beets - more lettuce than beets, and to have grilled chicken. It comes out and has a lot of arugula , but I don't really see anything else. As I start eating, it is a pile of beets with arugula thrown on top. The main part of the dish was beets (yuck - who wants just beets? I have been to many restaurants that have a beet/ grilled chicken/walnut salad on lettuce w balsamic vinegar. When it is a salad w greens, it is the best ever! This was not that, it was disgusting). I complained and the waitress gave some attitude. When I described what I wanted when I ordered, my son said I went overboard describing wanting a salad w lettuce and a few beets. Apparently the waitress didn't understand or bother to check before the food was brought out. I don't think I will go back, really disappointing. Other food was average. Many other options in this area that are better. Was too expensive to get something so far off what I asked for. Went to Gatehouse Tavern for the first time and loved it! The bartender made my Moscow Mule perfectly and the Philly Cheesesteak egg rolls were delicious. This place has great food. Try a hamburger cooked to order with fresh made buns! I also love the shrimp tacos. Great place to meet friends and have a good time. It can get crowded at night and on trivia night. Watch out for the trivia Nazis though! I picked up my phone to check my texts and was called down!!! Having lived in England for two years I've been on the hunt for a classic pub like the ones I used to frequent over there. Granted, I wouldn't rate this a proper English pub (the ceiling's a bit high and the lights a bit bright) but I would say that it has the most English-Pub-Esque feel more so than any other pubs I've found in the area. From the wide range of beer to the different styles/designs of chairs I'm feeling a little more at home. Just dim the lights and I might just forget which side of the pond I'm on. So far I'm a huge fan of the burger bar and gents, don't feel bad to order the Girly size burgers - they're freaking massive. The staff is awesome and you can usually catch your favorite waiter here or at the tuscan grill next door (as they are owned by the same people and have an adjoining kitchen). A long time local favorite, Gatehouse Tavern seemed to have slipped in 2014. We had a couple of not great meals there and it fell off the list of regular spots. We decided to give it a try in the new year and I'm pleased to report that food and service are back to previous form. Our server took drink orders within seconds of being seated. Our orders were taken by memory (always worrisome to me, but executed flawlessly here). We had 2 burgers and a buffalo chicken sandwich. All were prepared exactly as ordered, served in a reasonable time. Everything was piping hot and presentation was neat and pleasing. Our server stopped back to check on us several times, including drink refills before we asked. Overall, a pleasant experience. Gatehouse Tavern is back, and is once again in the regular rotation. I again recommend this local spot for a good casual meal. read more

So..j just wanted a drink. This one seemed to have good drinks so I just walked in. This was my 1st time here so I wasn't sure of the protocol & the bar was full so I stood there for a minute. Then I noticed a table available in the bar area. Since no one was assisting me, I assumed to just sit down & someone would come. When I first sat down it was 8:04..keep in mind I'm directly beside the bar & there are 2 workers directly behind me talking & 4 behind the bar. 3 of them are huddled, talking. After waiting 45 minutes & got no service, I decided to leave. My experience was horrible. I just wanted a drink.. I'm not the type to start screaming out asking for service but this really made me want to. Oh yea I forgot, so while sitting and waiting, about 20 minutes passed & the bartender relatives walks in ( I know this because she said it) & gets served right away. They were literally sitting in front of me. I could touch them. I am NEVER coming here again. Everything about this place is great (well except one thing) - the excellent staff, food, atmosphere, and size. Plus they have good music during the week. All of the staff I've dealt with have been good, and if you're lucky you'll get Justin (or was if Jordan?), who is one of the best servers we've had in a long time, he's great. They have a decent variety of food, generous portions, and it's a notch above other places serving the same fare. If it were closer we'd go there more often, but it's worth the trip and we will be back. And that one thing - the back room was pretty cold, it made us rush though our dinner a little faster than we wanted to. read more

I have been to Gatehouse many times, but have never writtend a review. I am not sure why. The food is good bar type comfort food. I love their loaded tots. It is one of my favorite dishes. My favorite burger is the Throwback Patty Melt. The onions are carmelized just right and the buger is always tasty. Their beer selection has a great variety of both on tap and bottle selections. We went on a Tuesday and they had some trivia night that took up 80% of the restaurant. The tables were reserved not occupied, so there was plenty of room in the main area. This was almost an hour before the trivia started. We were offered seats in separate room that had two tiny TVs, over crowded, and cramped seating. I would not advise going on a Tuesday night if you would like to enjoy a sports bar atmosphere. Really disappointing for a normally good place so we left. read more

My husband and I wanted to give the Gatehouse another try, since we hadn't been there in a couple of years. Our waitress was very accommodating and sweet. However, the food was not as pleasant. My husband ordered fried fish. The first piece was okay, but the others were a strange, grayish-clear color. Our waitress took it away for us, but came back and said the owner? manager? said it looked fine to him, so that was that. I can't ever remember a restaurant not comping such a disgusting dish. Also, the coleslaw was horrible and my wrap had very little flavor and dripped puddles over my plate. Maybe we will give it another try, in five years or so. read more

When Gatehouse first opened, this place was one of those places that was in our dining out rotation in Wake Forest. Like Girasole, something happened along the way to cheapen it, or make it not as great as it once was. When hubs and I were carnivores, this place was a fave for burgers. They do have AMAZING burgers. Since then, we have loved their veggie options such as portobello wrap, veggie burger, quesadillas, and salads. Then a few months ago, it started going downhill. The service is not as great, the food is not as good, and the atmosphere is not as fun. It seems like the crowd who patronize the bar now, don't seem to care about the food or beer, but just hanging out and making the place dirty-literally dirty. The tables are not clean and God-forbid you wear sandals or flip flops in here now, you will feel like you need to cover your feet immediately. Overall, if you want a dive-bar, this is your place. If you want to class it up a bit, steer clear. read more

I wish we would have checked these reviews prior to visiting this restaurant. With a decent ambiance, I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, food was mediocre to poor and it was very, very overpriced for what we got. My wife ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and greens. The steak was mostly overcooked batter with almost no meat inside. It was priced at $13 and was very poor. I ordered the fish and chips. Three pieces of fish, while not huge, were okay. The coleslaw was good. But the fries looked like they were the frozen string fries you get from the grocery store. Very disappointing. Both the Ale House and Oh'Mulligans serve fish and chips that are much, much better. And this entre cost $14. Both the kids got burgers. They were okay, but nothing special, and they cost $10 and $9 respectively. And those terrible shoestring potatoes were back again. Through in a draft Sam Adams and two sodas, a %15 tip and the total for the meal was over $70. No way was this worth the price. This restaurant won't last long if they continue to serve food at this price with this poor quality. We won't go back, and I would recommend to others to try the Ale House or Oh'Mulligans for similar menu but much better food at a better price. read more
