I never buy meat from the grocery stores anymore because I am sure about where this product comes from - all local and regional farmers and ranchers! It feels good to help sustainable agriculture and small businesses. I travel a lot and it is all waiting for me in my freezer. Sunday late afternoon I went and purchased two pieces of boneless thighs for my little 1 yo to eat this week as I meal plan his food. I placed them in the refrigerator vs the freezer since I knew I would be cooking it soon. Today, Wednesday, I was ready to work on his meals and the chicken already had a funny smell. This isn't something that normally happens when chicken is left in the refrigerator. My husband went to the store to address this issue and was turned away and told they couldn't do anything about it because how did they know we didn't leave it out and not properly refrigerated. So disappointed! Why would we go out of our way to go all the way to the store and it was our mistake. Mind you this is the second time we experience this with their meat. I think this second time is the last- we won't be shopping there any longer. Edit: husband came home with new chicken. This was after a heated conversation where two male staff members refused to give their names or connect him to a manager. It was until they saw him take a picture of their inspection sign outside that they decided to exchange the chicken.

I mean, it was right across from some horse stables and it's the #1 Veterinarian College in the nation... so I warily decided to take the gastronomical challenge and check it out. Was I ever surprised! The refrigerator and freezer sections of the small room were well laid out and stocked and I bought several cuts of beef and pork. Once I cooked the beef ~ a top sirloin cap, also known as Picanha (the crown jewel of Brazilian barbecue cuts), I wished I'd bought more or that the shop was less than a 70 mile drive. Most flavorful steak I've ever had! The pork was also very tender and flavorful but that beef... YUM... so memorable. I've since learned that the animals are humanely raised and processed. I will be sure to go back when I'm in the area.
