Although Sue has computerized her waitresses making everything more efficient I find it ridiculous that you have to ask for sugar &/or artificial sweetener. The blueberry pancakes and French Toast drizzled with Carmel were very good but the waitress should have suggested some meat and I was surprised when I ordered a side of sunny side eggs there was only one. read more

Food was fine but finding "Lets go Brandon" stickers on the condiments was a complete turnoff and I'll never go back. When I mentioned to the waitress how this is offensive to at least half the population she said the owner likes that sort of thing. Keep your politics out of your restaurant or risk more folks like me telling others not to go there. read more

Great little restaurant. I eat there several times a week. Food is good, atmosphere is great, very friendly staff. If you're looking for a 5 course meal then this is not for you. If you're looking for a good breakfast or lunch at a decent price with a friendly staff then stop in a give it a try. read more

The absolute worst restaurant in Canandaigua. One time I went there and ordered a grilled ham and cheese with tomato. It came with no ham. I told them I would not accept it. They made another one. But all they did was to slide in a thin slice of ham !! Do you believe that??? I just walked out. Haven't been back for oh.. 5-6 years. read more

I was with my mother visiting from out of town and decided to try Gateway Grille in Canandaigua. To make a long story short, there is nothing on the menu that you couldn't make yourself at home in 2 minutes, and even if you did make it at home, I'd bet my fat ass and yours as well that it would be much better. I'd even go above and beyond and say that any processed frozen microwavable meal that you got would be better. It's been some time since I had a grilled cheese, so I decided to try it at Gateway. You would have thought I ordered steak, it took over 20 minutes to have the dish served. When my grilled cheese with tomato, did arrive [ panini style ] it lacked flavor. The tomato that they had used must have been shipped in from Guadalajara 18 weeks ago. I am not sure where they got it from, but I didn't even notice it was in my sandwich. When I looked at Gateway's menu, it's as bland as could be. Hot Dogs, chicken sandwich, soup, BLT. Like I had originally stated, you'd be much better off staying home and eating. The highlight of the afternoon was when the owner served us the bill and told us they don't take credit cards or debit cards. Why? We're almost in 2012, right? Why should I have to use an ATM machine to pull $20.00 and get the additional financial rape charge of $3.00 for a $7.00 sandwich? She proceeded to tell me, the credit card fees we're just "too high", that's all bullshit, no one should tolerate a place not taking credit cards. This restaurant won't last. We tried to eat there today. We walk in and see a sign that says seat yourself so we do. Then we waited, an older guy ( i think he is the owner). Walks up to our table sees we do not have menus and just walks away. We waited some more, then kept waiting. The entire time employees looking at us and then walking away. Finally a young guy comes up and asks what we want. We told him we need menus, once he figured out what we meant by that he brings us menus. Then we waited and waited, can you guess what we did next? If you said waited you are correct. Finally we decided to leave. As we are the old says are they leaving and that is it. I am disappointed, I live close to this place and wanted to make it my weekly breakfast spot for my family. I will just have to go someplace that serves families. read more

Stopped here for breakfast on a busy Sunday morning, the atmosphere is nice and relaxing and the staff is friendly and attentive. I was worried our food might take a while to come out as the menu asked for patience while our meals were cooked, but we didn't have to wait long and they made the best home fries I've ever had. Came here for breakfast. This was my first time, my husband's second. Once we sat down we ordered within about 5 minutes of getting our menus, but then waited for about 40 minutes for our food to come. I got a Belgium waffle with strawberries. I could tell it had been sitting because it was soggy in the middle where the strawberries were sitting, which were frozen and not fresh. Not that I want to be too picky about that but it's summer and with the amount charged extra they should be fresh, the frozen ones were soggy and gross. My husband ran out of water during our 40 minute wait and never got a refill. No one ever checked on us or anyone. The one waitress seemed very stressed and unhappy and she wasn't very nice to the younger girls working there. It seemed like they only could put out one order at a time which didn't make sense. read more

I ordered the quiche and I have to say it was the worst I have ever had. Not something I'd recommend at all. The creamy chicken soup sported mushrooms from a can and was so think i almost asked for a knife. Not sure what the affinity is with curry but it really needs a dial back. Nice service however. Very friendly wait staff and that is my justification for two stars. If you want a decent meal especially breakfast I'd advise looking elsewhere as the town has some alternatives. We went out looking for a nice place to eat and were very disappointed. Not recommended. read more

The dining area was larger than I expected, the tables were mostly full and we (group of 5) were seated right away. It has a hometown atmosphere. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. Food was really good. Banana rum French toast was flavourful, club sandwich was classic, pancakes were ginormous. Staff were friendly and prompt. Coffee flowed. Bathrooms clean. I would give Gateway Grille zero stars if it wasn't for the hostess actually seating us and serving us water. Otherwise we sat for 20 mins and when the server finally came around she ignored us and took the order from the table next to us who had been there five mins tops. I can't believe some of these reviews (exaggerated and some have just wrong facts). This is a breakfast/lunch diner, not Mario's Via Abruzzi's or Pomodoro Grill and Wine Bar. My wife and I go here frequently for a good tasting breakfast or lunch for a decent price and great service. Sure, when they are packed the service isn't as fast as during the off hours (where is it ever), but the service has never been less than I would expect given the time of day and/or the number of customers. I like their coffee better than anyone else's (personal taste) and no limit on refills. Every day they have specials and often they are quite unique: craisin banana pancakes (the pancakes are huge!), pepperoni, mushroom, egg and swiss on an onion bagel (pepperoni is homemade and great!), bacon jalapanos and cheddar omelet, avocado onion tomato quiche to name a few. I haven't tried all of these. I got them from Facebook, they post their daily specials. They have great soups, always real tasty. I also like that they will take instructions with your order. If you like something cooked a certain way or with specific additions, if they have what you want, you will get it your way. My favorites: Sausage gravy on Texas toast SOS Eggs Benedict Breakfast hash Egg, bacon, cheese breakfast sandwich on a roll. read more

Seat yourself... Wait..... Waitress "I'll bring some menus" (did not ask if we would like coffee or something to drink)... Wait again...menus arrive along with a clipboard of hand written "specials" ... Still not offered beverages.... Wait again..... Took order then finally brought drinks, as I waited the 20 minutes for eggs and French toast I realized the ATM was in the room for a reason, although on the outside door there are visa/mc stickers. I got my cash paid the $2 fee. Not a good experience. I suggest the owner watches a few restaurant rescue type programs and learn a few things about service and how to treat your customers and employees. Because the owner decided to charge me $2 to get cash, that cost the employee to get a tip $2 short. Don't you think that replacing the ATM with another table and two chairs would make up your fees for the year? Although, I would suspect your unaware of how much revenue each chair in your establishment is worth annually. A couple tips for the owner: Successful diners never have an ATM in the dining room You can afford the custom gateway grille floor mat then you can afford a credit card machine. Customers are not stupid. You are open 6-2 most days. You are not a "grille", your a diner. You don't grill breakfast. No wonder this place was empty.... read more

After the farmers market we were looking for a place for breakfast and spotted Gateway Grille. We had a double stroller and left it outside since we couldn't fit it through the entrance. That should have been the first sign. The second was when we saw numerous empty tables and one of the employees said it'd take about 10 minutes to clear a table. Ok. So we are seated after almost ten minutes with a 3 year old, 9 month old, my husband and I. Now we had to wait for a high chair since all of them were in use. When we finally order about 10 minutes later, it took at least 30-40 minutes to get our food. The food was decent diner food. Not the best or worst I've had. I had an omelette, my husband had eggs/toast/home fries, and my daughter had a pancake. It looked to me as if all of the servers were bussing their own tables which slowed everything down. I'd recommend getting a busser and an extra cook, along with a couple more high chairs to speed up the painful time spent waiting. I really wanted to love this place but can't waste 1 1/2 hours to eat breakfast. read more

Despite the less than stellar reviews, I decided to give Gateway Grille a try for a Friday morning breakfast. I ordered roast beef hash with poached eggs and coffee. When my order arrived I actually thought they were joking - there was perhaps 3/4 of a cup of hash. The portion did not even fill a quarter of the plate. The bill was $13.00! I asked the waitress if this was a typical portion of hash (thinking perhaps they were running out and I got the last of it!) She said, "a portion is one cup." The place was empty, except for a few men at the counter. If they think they are going to increase their business by reducing their portion size and raising their prices, they don't know much about the restaurant business. Won't be back. read more

The decor is wonderful and as welcoming as their staff. the food is excellent with lots of variety. its great to step into a place that's clean! These folks did our company Christmas party. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious! Service was awesome. They made us feel as if we were in their home. We are hoping that Jon and Susan will be doing our company picnic, as well. read more

Two strikes and your out. This was our second visit to this restaurant and we were sadly disappointed once again. Was asked to sit outside as the only open tables were reserved. We didn't have a problem with that but wanted to make sure we would get coffee out there. Got our initial cup but then no one came out for over 20 minutes. Decided to pick up our stuff and moved inside. Food finally came after a half hour. My wife's poached eggs were hard boiled and had to be sent back. My eggs benedict was ok but you couldn't even cut the english muffins with a knife...needed a saw. Took us another 20-30 minutes to get the poached eggs that had to be recooked. By the time they finally came I was done eating my meal and my wife's toast was cold. Manager came over and asked how our meals were. We explained what had happened but she didn't seem to care. Never apologized or made any offer to make things better. Will never eat there again. This is the gateway to hell. read more
