I came here last year when we came to Jackson, and would have given 4 stars for the food and experience. This time for dinner, we had the Pork Shank and Elk Pasta, 2 of their most recommended dishes. Really not that good! Overpriced and Overrated. Caesar salad was passable as an included side, but not an a la carte salad. This dinner was not worth the price tag. Almost $100 including 2 beers and tip. Especially insulting when our waiter, Laura, eavesdropped and over heard my comments. Rather than caring about the poor quality of the food, she seemed to mock the fact that there was an opinion that the food was not up to snuff. If you get NOTHING else, get the buffalo (octopus) app that sits on a bed of heavenly blue cheese risotto. The risotto was made of dreams and clouds and blue cheese. Two of us dined and we tried the pork buns (good not spectacular), the butternut squash soup (amazing), the truffle pasta with steak (noodles are more like spaetzle dumplings but good flavor), Brussel sprouts (delish), and a glass of French toast rose' wine. Wonderful experience last night at Gather. Snezana was our server and she is terrific! So much fun and her recommendations were spot on. I had the Waldorf salad and my husband started with the quinoa. We were not disappointed. Love the mix of flavors. Then I had the truffle pasta with a poached egg on top. The small portion was perfect in order to save room for the chocolate tart which came in a glass canning jar with vanilla ice cream on top. Yum! You can tell this place is special the minute you walk in. You are greeted by a beautiful smiling maître d'. The environment is open yet cozy. Our waitress, Sara was outstanding explaining the menu, specials and was very attentive and never seemed rushed even though they were busy. The oysters? Outstanding! I had the steak and my husband the eggplant special. The chef here is not only an extremely talented chef, plating is a high priority here making each dish as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate. You've GOT to try their "Saketini". A cucumber infused sake in a chilled martini glass. Marvelous! If you hate brussel sprouts, try them here, you'll love them! We looked at other tables orders, all gorgeous.. Especially the asparagus. Large restaurant with a decent wine and drink menu. We had the beef tongue frites. Very good but a lot of protein, so would pair wisely. Had the special which was the monkfish, fairly good but chef forgot one of the ingredients. But came out quickly after we mentioned it. I had the braised beef cheek with spaetzle. Generally pleasing food, but the devil is in the details. The steamed pork buns had wonderful caramelized crunch on the pork belly that was balanced by the radish slaw. Details: The ingredients fall out when dipping into the ginger ponzu sauce. Imagine trying to dip a taco. The sauce also turned a shareable appetizer into a potentially unshareable dish. Maybe the wet sauce could be turned into a creamy sauce that is squeezed into each bun? Not only would it solve my issue, but prevent the soft bun from turning mushy and introduce another texture - creaminess. The Snake River Farms pork shank had a lovely Chinese char siu BBQ coating. The bed of sweet and smooth carrot puree tempered the lentils to create the best food of the night. Details: The coating on the pork didn't soak into the unflavorful meat. Given my continued malaise with Snake River meats, I partially think the problem with the lack of flavor was the meat itself. But, that's also an overlooked detail by the chef. Just because people identify Snake River Farms with high quality, it doesn't mean it is, or at the very least, isn't the right meat for this otherwise spot-on recipe. Also, the same sliced red jalapeno and cilantro garnish used on the pork buns was lazily used on the pork shank. The bolognese had hearty flavors, plenty of elk meat, and homey noodles. Details: Completely oversauced that it was like eating a stew. There was also a red oil slick at the bottom of the bowl which I could understand if cooking a fatty meat, but this was lean elk meat. Bread was served with the pasta which is old school American cooking. It's like getting garlic bread on top of spaghetti. Ultimately, I needed something to eat with the excess amount of sauce, so I used the bread, but still had leftover sauce. The staff was casual, friendly, and attentive. Great casual place with complex flavors. Pork Buns are spot on. The fries are fantastic. And, the brussel sprouts are just incredible. We finished up with the Red Bird Fried Chicken which is served with chive pancakes and a PORK BELLY reduction (Think pancake syrup made with a touch of bacon grease). It also has some form of a berry purée underneath. The chicken was crisp and moist. Could have had a bit more crunch to pancake (maybe make it a waffle?). But, I'm probably being hypercritical to even bring that up. It was still one of the best things I've eaten in a very long time. I was disappointed to be scoffed at by the hostess when my answer to "Do you have a reservation?" Was "No". I'm from a large city, and she hesitated for an overly long time and acted as if a 45 minute wait was the most insane option to offer ... I would've much preferred an offer of the bar or a 45 minute wait without the theatrics. Maybe the moral of the story is, if you think a 45 minute wait is the worst thing you've ever heard, call for a reservation ahead of time. REGARDLESS. I digress. We did end up sitting at the bar, which was absolutely wonderful and exactly what we wanted. The bartender was so sweet and down to earth. We picked this place because it was #1 on Yelp and it was excellent in every way. First, the staff was amazing. We didn't have a reservation on a Saturday night (recommended) but the staff accommodated us anyway with a table for 4. Our server was also very good and spent a lot of time at our table. Beyond frustrated with the booking system. We made a reservation for 4 people and were well aware of the 24 hour cancellation policy and called the day prior (28 hours in advance) to move the booking to the following week which they accommodated. We were then charged a $100 for no-show. Please train your staff for how to cancel a reservation !!!! We followed the policy, we're still charged, we've disputed with our credit card company and were given a sob story about covid struggles -- we followed the policy, we dined there a week later yet charged $100 for no reason. While dining there we brought up the charge to the server who said a manager wasn't available to discuss and call back. After calling several times to no answer we went through the credit card company. The response keeps being it's policy but we followed policy!!! Our latest response was even incorrect because it said 6 hour policy not 24. Again we still would have followed that but believe it to be a 24 cancellation window. Extremely disappointing because we would return for the food but not after this ordeal. read more
