Came here with a large group tonight. We sat at a long table that was directly connected to another long table in the middle. I ended up sitting in the middle of my group and another group. Wasn't ideal for hearing the whole table and the sad acoustic live music did not do anything to bring up the mood of this large room. We started with the tots, when they brought them to the table it was not what i expected. It wasn't really a tot more of a squished potato fried. We also had the fries which were a little over cooked but still pretty good. For dinner I had an app the sausage and beans. Which was amazing. I could have eaten about two more servings of this. The flavors were perfect. I ended the night with the maple cream brûlée which was delicious and a perfect ending to the night. I came here for dinner as part of a group. The setup was an open concept with large kitchen in the back. We were seated at a long table but shoulder to shoulder with another group. It was a bit strange. There was a musician playing guitar and singing. He used a microphone and the sound overtook the room. I couldn't hear the person right next me. The chairs were strangely uncomfortable. The decor was old lanterns and garden equipment. The waiter seemed very excited about everything on the menu but a little disorganized. He was very friendly and polite. The meals came out a bit staggered. Everything was served on wooden cutting boards. We ordered a few apps to share. The brat n beans were wonderful with house made beans that were flavorful and soft. The Rosemary fries were over cooked. The deviled eggs had unique flavor of saffron and topped with diced onions. The inside was a nice creamy texture. The desserts were excellent. The Meyer lemon Neapolitan dessert was wonderful. It had perfect citrus flavors with lemon and blood orange. I've visited Gather on three occasions and each time, the quality of the food drops a half a star. It'm giving it four stars today, so it's still pretty good. 2/17/16 I went with a group of 13, which is hard to manage, especially with 10 separate checks. Being a former server, I felt our server's pain. He had a few hiccups when separating the checks, and the food didn't come out all together (oops) but overall, bravo! We were a hard bunch to manage. The Good: You know you are getting fresh local food when you eat here. The Bad: Some of the food was really mild or lacking flavor. The Ugly: The music was so loud you could not hear your table mates or the server. AND there is a HUGE table that runs almost the length of the dining room, it seats like 20 people +/-. I guess this is great when you don't want to talk to your dinner companions, but when you want to chat, and not sit right next to big parties, it's awkward and uncomfortable. Let me explain the quality of food. I had the sunchokes (YUM!) and then the carrot, ginger soup (YUM!), then the Fusilli Col Boco for my main course. The pesto was very earthy without enough savory. It could have used more salt or maybe some more of the beet emulsion, which was the best part of the dish. Banana anglaise for dessert was very, very good. The service and food quality is inconsistent here so I'm averaging my experiences here into 3 stars. read more

Go here! Hands down amazing! So glad this popped up on yelp when we were driving home to Boston. Deliciously fresh, great service, good prices, and a patio if you have a dog with you. We had the gather salad and goat cheese/beet salad to start. Recommend both. Also the bread and olive oil they give you is to die for! Also on Thursday they have half off bottled wine so we lucked out! We ordered for entrees bouillabaisse, chorizo burger, and black bean burger. All were cooked and spiced perfectly. The rosemary fries that came with the burgers were crispy and delicious. The bouillabaisse had abundant vegetables and seafood. Muscles were very clean. All in all would 100% recommend. Our server didn't advise us of the daily specials yet one table that server did tell them. The food came finally which we both agreed was very dilicous and prepared with style and fanaize. I'm confused about Gather. I have been meaning to go for along time. When it first opened I heard it was farm to table and I thought that meant lots of local ingredients, maybe some organic options, the possibility of 100% grass fed beef, and/or free range chicken. However beyond the "farm to table" after the name, there is no mention of where the food comes from. The only info on the brunch menu that was a bit helpful was that the beef was house ground. And the special with sausage was house, made or ground, not sure. This leaves out a lot that I'd like to know. I glanced at the dinner menu and saw that the burger had house-ground grass fed beef. No mention of 100% or if it was local. Also listed Maine corn tortilla for the fish taco. I didn't order any beer so I can't comment on that. The coffee I was served was old and cold. As I look for more places to eat healthier I've figured out if the menu and home pages do not tell you much about where the food comes from it's usually because it's not going to impress. I'd give the eggs benedict with polenta and "farm" greens a 3. Very salty polenta and the poached eggs just didn't do much for me. The greens seemed like they began frozen - or maybe that came from overcooking them. The cranberry orange bread with a maple glaze was yummy. Sugar was the strongest taste. Will not return and for several reasons. Seemed like a great find at first, as it has a cool open feel to it and an impressive sounding menu. We arrived and waited 15-20 minutes, long enough to be ready to order, before our waitress found her way over to take drink orders. Appetizers were alright, but underwhelming. Deviled eggs were great but brussle sprouts, tartare and nightly special were all forgettable and too expensive. Entrees were slow coming out. Fish tacos were ok but I have had much better for 1/4 the cost. Sad part was that the fish tacos were a highlight. The $25 ravioli were ok at best but when you charge that for 5-6 ravioli they better be awesome. They weren't. Soba noodles with beef was small and flavorless. Potato wrapped salmon only had a few thinly sliced pieces of potato atop a small cut of salmon. How they consider it potato wrapped is beyond me. All in all the meal was 2.5-3 stars, but the kicker was in the bill. $183 for 4 adults getting one drink a piece. No problem, we had a gift card that had $100 written on it. Went to cash it in and were told it only had $50. This was a gift and we were told to contact our friends to double check how much was on it, which is an awkward thing to do. They also explained that they reused gift cards and that was probably the issue. Unwillingness to honor a gift card and poor/slow service means I'll never go back and I'll tell everyone I know not to bother. If in Yarmouth, you must check out Gather for brunch at least. The brussel hash (don't worry it's not vegetarian, plenty of bacon) is to die for. So many wonderful flavors. Almost like an eggs Benedict on steroids. My husband also enjoyed the delicious homemade corned beef hash and eggs, which he said was in his top five faves for Hash. The gather Bloody Mary was the perfect amount of spice, but the homemade mix had a unique spin which included carrot juice. I loved it. Service was amazing and spot on! Clumps of ramen, a pink hard-boiled egg, teeny stalks of what looked like asparagus without the heads, and cold lobster. Would not order again. The house Cabernet was $13, so for my second glass I ordered the house red. It was better. This is not a two-dollar-sign restaurant. It needs three dollar signs! My first thought when I sat down at our table was "did they purposely make the chairs this uncomfortable so people would eat and leave faster? More table turnover=more money for the restaurant. The back of the chair is made of metal posts that curve inward and narrow right at your butt so its sticking into your back the entire time. I purposely had to sit at the edge of the seat and hover over the table. This place isn't cheap they can afford more comfortable chairs. My second thought was that I cannot hear the people sitting right next to me because of the guy singing and playing the guitar. It was so incredibly loud that our group couldn't hear each other or hear the poor waiter who was trying to tell us about the specials. I know I'm not the only one who just smiled and nodded at him and pretended to hear what he was saying. This is supposed to be a finer dining restaurant- people want to be able to talk to their company. Not be forced to eat thinking to themselves or yell across the table the entire time. Everyone at my table (that I was able to hear) thought the same thing and found it quite annoying. However, the server was really nice and seemed to love being there. Kudos to him :) I ordered the pumpkin ricotta pizza ($14). It was great, I would order it again. It was sweet and flavorful. As a table we shared some sun choke tots. They were okay but not memorable. Wouldn't order again. The honey margaritas ($9) are excellent. I ordered two of them. My friends down at the other end of the table caught me licking the rim clean and laughed. Would definitely order these again. So all in all I'd really like to give the place 2.5 stars. Probably won't come back. If I do, it'll be with one other person so we can get a small table where we can hear each other, just in case its obnoxiously loud like this time was. My favorite restaurant in the Portland area so far. Greeted at the door by the owner, friendly and helpful wait staff, very good food, and an awesome little play area for little ones. I nearly cried when I saw it: a chance to eat in peace with the family for more then 5 minutes! Really neat atmosphere, loved seeing the kitchen on the stage. Had the deviled eggs - smokey! Came here on a Wednesday with a fairly large group of friends. I'm always a little bit leery of restaurants that use only a single-word adverb or adjective as their name; it generally means the place is too expensive, trendy, and/or pretentious for my ilk. I was happy to learn that Gather was not 2/3 of this, as I found it to be very friendly and cozy. The menu is a bit on the pricey side, however many of the ingredients seem to be locally sourced. The restaurant is open concept and it feels like a Great Hall of olden days. The kitchen is unique, in that it seems to be up on a raised dais in the back of the hall. There was a singer playing music (a bit loud?) almost the entire time we were there. What I sampled: Marinaded Olives: Good. But they're olives, and olives are always awesome. Lamb & Pork Meatballs: Probably my favorite appetizer. Super tasty. Cheddar Fritters: Yes! Great, and it paired well with the onion jam. Brussels Sprouts. Is it a Maine restaurant code to have sprouts on menu? It certainly seems like it, but you won't find me complaining. This were on par. Fish Taco: I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was - especially the tortilla. What I ordered: Manhattan ($9?): About right for the price. Decently made. Lentil-Goat Cheese Risotto with Beet and Pickled fennel ($19): Meh. I was actually really excited to order this, but it ended up being extremely bland. For the portion, this is more like a $11 or $12 dish. $19 is an incredible stretch. Maple Creme Broulee ($Can't recall): Fantastic. Great take on this dessert, and especially good washed down with coffee. I kept going back and forth on whether to give 3 or 4 stars. My experience at Gather did not live up to the other reviews here. I went with a group of 10 (with a reservation) to celebrate a friend's birthday. For a place whose name is Gather they weren't very accommodating of our largish group. We were placed at one end of a very long table, and the seats directly next to us were in use by another party. So it was an uncomfortable mix of too-tight seating, a total inability to visit with some members of our party because they were on the other end of the table, and feeling like we were a part of another group's conversation. Very disappointing. Additionally, our waitress was a bit flighty, perhaps overwhelmed by the size of our party. She was eager to get us drinks and bring refills, but was forgetful, delivering drinks to the wrong people several times. When our meals came out, mine was missing and was so delayed everyone else was done by the time I was starting. I can only assume they forgot mine because it was so piping hot when it came out, I had to eat it very slowly and the rest of the party was waiting for me to finish before moving on to dessert, which was awkward. My husband hated his kale and sausage pizza. I'm not feeling too eager to return. Perhaps they'd be better for brunch rather than dinner, and certainly would not suggest this place for a large group. read more

I have eaten here many times since they first opened and I always think it is better than the last time. The food is so good, and the space is so cool and well thought out. The deviled eggs are amazing. I have had a couple different salmon entrees and all of them have been better than the last. The veggie burger I had last time wasn't great but the fries were delicious and almost made up for it. I've only ever had the eggs florentine for brunch- but that's only cause it's so good I can't bring myself to order anything else. The house made sodas are great. This place does Maine's outstanding produce justice. We shared two vegetarian appetizers (velvety tomato & red pepper bisque garnished with fresh sweet corn! Fried Brussels sprouts brown on the edges and dressed in a sesame soy glaze!), each ordered our favorite kind of vegetarian entree (wild mushroom risotto with just-picked fall veggies! Savory black bean-quinoa burger with The. Best. Fries. Ever. No, really. EVER.), and then shared a slice of pie a mode that made me just a little angry, because it was better than my homemade pie. Their ice cream-- Maple's organic gelato-- was great, too. Half-dozen beers on tap, lots more bottled, didn't check the wine list, but it was long. Their house made root beer was really fantastic-- very rich and flavorful without getting syrupy. Can't wait to try their blueberry soda. I hate giving less than five stars, those three stars just haunt me, tease me, tear me up inside. I don't do this for giggles, so I have a real valid issue when I give a three. So the parking was ok, the entrance and dining area was very cool. Loved how the cooks were on stage. We chose to eat outside since it was nice out and the inside seemed a bit dark(could have been my eyes hadn't yet adjusted). Outside the seating overlooked the parking lot and the town's overpass. So nothing very scenic but it was nice whether to savor. Our food came out promptly and our house sodas were amazing. I highly recommend the mint lime soda, Yum! The food itself was lack luster. We split the corn fritters which could have been a bit more crunchy, but maybe that's just me. I had the salmon and though it was well cooked it didn't seem to grab me. It was also the special she had listed and even though I should have asked they should list all the main items that will be on my plate. For example: I hate olives. The orzo pasta had olives...lots of them. Sigh. Maybe she said a fancy word for this be olivey! I'm slow on those fancy smancy food words, so maybe it was me. My husband got the veggie burger and gave me a shrug when I asked how it was, "it's good". He loved the fries though. The price for the farm fresh was what I expected but for how it tasted, I would say it was kind of steep. The waitress was kind and charming. Neat farm-to-table restaurant in Yarmouth! We went to Gather on a Wednesday night for their live music which is a lot of fun for both kids and adults. The restaurant is true to its name with a large communal table in the middle of the restaurant. Our starters of Brussel sprouts, Sunchoke Tots, and Mussels were all big hits at the table. For my entree, I got the Drop Fish Dumpling Bow (cod, shrimp, vegetable noodles, miso, and sambal chili paste) which was unique, delicious and has inspired me to make my own version at home. We didn't get any of their wood-fired pizzas but they looked mighty tasty. Service was good and there are plenty of options for beer and wine. Overall, it was a nice first experience. Stopped here for brunch on my way to Freeport to do some shopping and it was the second best decision I made all day. (The best decision was buying a new pair of slippers from Bean's that I'm wearing right now). The instant we walked through the door we were welcomed to the sound of banjo, violin, and a standing base from a live folk band. Gather looks and feels like some sort of old schoolhouse/townhall turned restaurant. Unpretentious, warm, and comforting with old wrought iron knickknacks decorating the walls. The menu boasts lots of local farm fresh fare which is their calling card and includes a large chalkboard with the daily specials on this day which included homemade biscuits & gravy and a braised pork and Parmesan omelet. I of course am a HUGE fan of Eggs Benny and if a breakfast or brunch place has it on the menu I'm getting it. Gather's Veggie Eggs Benedict had two perfectly poached eggs (you know the kind that when you cut into the warm yolk slowly runs down all over your food and plate which I find strangely erotic and sexy) on top of a gargantuan pile of sauteed spinach (I mean it, loved the massive portion of spinach as most spots will just give you a small shrunken bit) all sitting on sourdough covered in hollandaise. The hollandaise was just a tad bit lemony for my liking but most would love that extra bit of acid cutting through the richness of it. My lady had the smoked salmon/lox three ways on rye which came with 3 good size toast points which included a traditional one with capers, red onion, and dill cream, another with sunchokes, and a third with leeks. It also came with a mixed greens salad which hit the spot. We usually split a sweet dish at brunch and decided to try the brioche french toast which didn't disappoint. It was warm, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, buttery, and sweet served with real maple syrup. All in all we had a great meal and I would definitely recommend Gather to anyone in the area or on their way to Freeport for shopping. read more

Great place all around. Inventive cocktails, locally sourced ingredients and super tasty plates. The burger is my husband's go to and it has never failed to impress. I usually go for one of the specials and have never been disappointed. Service has always been great. Order a quick plate app to start as when the restaurant is full food can sometimes take a bit but never have I felt anything but well cared for here even with a full house. And they have toys for the kids in a corner!!!! Makes the night go so much smoother when there is a book or a few wooden blocks to play with while waiting for our food. I live near here and try and eat here rather than going into Portland. There was only one menu that night, so I thought it would be fun to see what they had in store. The waiter convinced me to get the steak, and when I asked to make sure it was going to be medium-medium rare, the he laughed and said "that's the only way we do it" and then promptly delivered a COMPLETELY overcooked steak with barely a side. It was so hard chew, I ended up not eating most of it. Trying to convince myself the whole time I was being unreasonable...but I honestly don't believe I was! My husbands meal - the risotto - was $34 and came out in the SMALLEST scoop. We've never, ever been complainers about food. And this is the first time I've ever written a review. But we both looked at each other in utter astonishment when our bill came - after one drink each, overcooked and chewy Brussels sprouts, WAY overdone, tough $40 steak and a $34 scoop of risotto - and it was almost twice what we have ever paid in Portland the past few years at restaraunts such as Honey Paw, Baharat, Duck Fat, etc. We won't be going back anytime soon, and to be honest, I'm sad about that. read more

Gather is a great new restaurant in Yarmouth. We went on a busy Friday night and the service was absolutely fantastic. We waited for our table at the bar and they were attentive. Once we got to our table, the staff was always on top of everything. The food was fresh and delicious. We started with a salad and had a burger and pizza for dinner. Run don't walk. For some reason the run of the mill diner breakfast in the side of the highway hotel was rated the same as this place. I don't believe it for a second. The atmosphere is a gorgeous converted space (either church or town hall) with the kitchen on the stage (literally). The food was some of the best brunch I've had in my life. Gather is a true gem in small-town Yarmouth, ME. We traveled up from Portland to check it out and were beyond satisfied. The family style salad is filled with big pieces of fresh lettuce, pickled onions, carrots and a fabulous light dressing. The margarita pizza was magnificent, the fritters were fab, and the salmon stupendous. We've been up twice now and it was just as great the second time around.... the pork terrine is amazzzzing. They also have a great selection of local beers. We were shocked at how reasonable the bill was for the quality and portions of the food we had both times. Worth the drive from Portland! read more

Found this gem on yelp when looking for breakfast in the Freeport area. Apparently everything is farm-to-table from within 10 miles, and that comes through in the unique flavor of the food. The setup is intimate & quaint. The open kitchen concept is entertaining while you wait for your food. My wife had the biscuits & gravy while I sampled the special, 3 different breakfast sandwiches on homemade biscuits. My sandwiches were excellent, each with it's own unique flavors & textures. Goat cheese & sausage, Ham & cheddar & Swiss w/ Bacon. Swiss & Bacon was easily the best of the 3. My wife's biscuit and gravy was over the top delicious, and the white wine added to the gravy gave it much needed depth. The only drawback to the meal was the sticker shock at the end. $60 w/ tax & top for breakfast for 2 adults & 2 kids is a bit much which makes this place a splurge rather than a regular place to dine.. read more

This restaurant was hugely disappointing. I'm not sure how it got the ratings it has. We took my daughter and her boyfriend there to celebrate their birthdays. Two of us got the chicken pot pie, which was not hearty and filling as the waitress promised. It was soupy and fairly tasteless. We have much better at home. Two of us got the braised beef ribs... There were no ribs and the gnocchi was like glue. We have had better diner food. Gather should be embarrassed to charge the prices they do. Ambience was lacking... It felt like an old Townhall with little character. It was very plain and noisy and seemed like a potluck dinner in an old town hall, which honestly would have been better. Two of the servers appeared to be high school kids who were very casually dressed with no personality. The waitress struggled to make a recommendation when asked about two different menu items.
