I saw the reviews prior to dining at Gator's Dockside and thought it couldn't be that bad. I must say, the quality of food coming out of the kitchen is borderline edible. I'm surprised this place is still in business. Our table ordered 3 entrees and an appetizer, all comparable in standard and execution. The buffalo sauce doesn't even taste like Buffalo, which seems odd considering GD is a sports bar. Our waitress was nice but lacked liveliness. The entire staff seemed rather lethargic and sluggish. We did not complain to the staff or kitchen, however the table behind us complained about their food and the staff member discussing the issue with them took their complaints professionally and offered resolution. Staff was really friendly and service was quick. The food was not outstanding but it wasn't terrible by any means, I'd say it was average bar food quality. We had a large party and sat comfortably at a booth. The cheese grits were more creamy than grits and cheese, The buffalo wrap was alittle dry, but some extra Cajun ranch sauce fixed that problem. May or may not have caused some other problems for me shortly afterward some in our party were raving about the gummy bear shots though and there are a lot of TVs so it's probably a good spot for games and casual eats. Service is consistently slow for this location. Food is your typical Sysco bar fare. They have a decent number of TVs which appears to be a popular spot during peak sports seasons - especially on weekends - but I have been in here where the place is less than half full - and the service is still slow. It's close to home but we rarely visit because we know what to expect. It's not horrible, but it's not a place that we frequent. read more

We arrived here after getting family pictures. When we arrived we waited for the hostess to come back to the stand. We told her our party size and were seated. When we were seated I noticed that there was some paper towels on the floor, food scraps, and it looked like the table needed a quick cleaning. I made mention of this to the hostess and she came over, picked up the trash. Once we sat down it took a bit to place our order. We placed the kiddo entrees first, so they would come out sooner. We ordered an app of the onion petals. I've had them at another location, so knew what to expect. While we were waiting on our food, a huge party of kids and parents came in that were seated in our section (no fault of the server). Service was a bit slower and that was to be expected. The onion petals didn't come out terribly hot, but we decided to eat them anyways. They were still good, just wish they had been warmer. Entrees came out (most of us got wings). This is close to my house, and I have been wanting to check it out since I had a coupon for it. I went for lunch on a Saturday with my mom. There was plenty of parking, and we were able to be seated immediately as soon as we walked in. There was plenty of seating, and it was not crowded at 1 pm. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive, and she got us our drinks while we browsed the appetizers. We chose the buffalo cauliflower, which came with ranch dipping sauce and covered in blue cheese. There was plenty to split between the two of us, and they tasted freshly made. For lunch, we decided on the Seabreeze Salad for my mom and a hamburger with cheddar cheese for myself. They have two sizes of salad, whole and small. My mom chose the small, which ended up being a big salad. My burger was juicy, filling, and charbroiled. It tasted delicious and not frozen. I was barely able to finish the burger, and the crispy fries were a perfect side. We were happy with our meals, the service, and the atmosphere. I hope to be back soon. read more

Stopped by on a whim for a Saturday lunch and were pleasantly surprised. Not too packed with a lot of seating both inside and out. The menu is what you would expect with a bar and grill. We ordered the island tacos, Chicken Cordon Bleu, and the Buffalo chicken wrap and a kids meal. My son said the Chicken Cordon Bleu was the best ever! Our waitress was prompt and accommodating. She provided wonderful service. Overall good food, good service and casual relaxing environment. I got medium & lemon pepper wings and kind of wished I would have upped the spice level because the medium wings were not as spicy as I would have liked. We have been regulars for over 2 years. Food and service was always exceptional. We are so sad to see the decline in food quality over the last several months. Initially they were over frying tots, mushrooms, pickles & cauliflower so we stopped ordering. Medium rare burger was a hockey puck, replacement was RAW in the middle and barely cooked on the outside. The last meal took 45 mins and was cold. Tried mushrooms again and they were sour (spoiled?) I ordered Shrimp and Grits, my wife ordered a BLT. The only way I can describe the grits was pasty, the cheese sauce was like nacho cheese sauce. I was massively disappointed. my wife's BLT had bacon that was black on the ends from being over cooked. Grilled wings. My fall back here. They've changed their menu several times over the years, but this is their consistent winner. The manager brags about their fresh-made boneless wings, but I still prefer them on-the-bone. Here, and down the street at Bonos, were where I got hooked on the grilled flavor. The kids like the crazy deep-fried monster of a Monte Cristo sandwich. Or a burger - the spicy jalapeño or their "Diner," which is a Royale on Texas toast. Or the one with Mac and Cheese on it. Not a huge selection of craft beer. Always 1 and sometimes a couple. I-10 and/or Voodoo Ranger. Sometimes an option or two in a can, if your waiter remembers what they are. Some good salad choices. They do jerk, grilled, and fried shrimp pretty well. Lots of creative fried bar food options. Ribs are pretty good - seem to be the same style as Miller's -- brought in pre-cooked and already swimming in sauce. Really my only beef with the menu is the crinkle cut fries. I guess I've been brainwashed by the shoestring cult. What's fun? Wednesday Trivia night is good here, if that's your thing. Service: Absolutely the worse. We wanted to sit at the outside bar but was informed, rather rudely, that the bartender could not reach across to serve us. By law, I thought businesses were supposed to provide reasonable accommodations for their handicapped employees. Not a huge deal and we sit at the inside bar. Food: We were advised they were not serving all flat wings. Additionally, the server advised that they no longer carried lemon pepper. OK, we ordered 10 wings and only received two flats. When raising the issue to the Manager, he became extremely argumentative and offered no explanation. In fact, I thought he was going to attack me. If you aren't serving all flats to anyone, a reasonable person would think you would receive 5 drums and 5 flats. Gators has been one of our favorite places to eat, throughout Northeast Florida. As it stands now our $100 plus outings will go to a competitor. Extremely disappointed with the food and particularly the threatening atmosphere of this establishment. Needs to close down! Incidentally, I called another Gator's location and inquired about ordering all flats. This extremely polite person explained that the Gator Dockside Company had contracted with a purveyor that provides limited flats.....Had the manager of the St. John's location explained the contract with their purveyor and had not been aggressive, we would have been more understanding. read more

Went right before they were closing, and the customer service was still amazing. Our waitress Delilah was so accommodating and pleasant! Food was top-notch! We had grill wings and a snapper sandwich with fries. The wing sauces and remoulade were awesome. I REALLY enjoyed the grilled smoky flavor of the wings. Great place to catch the games. Tons of TVs almost guaranteeing that your team will be one of them. They put signs underneath the TVs indicating which game will be on it. Usually the big local game gets the sound. Beer was cold. Ordered the giant pretzel which was decent. The buffalo wings were good but could be a little crisper. Flavor was good but a little greasy. We also ordered a couple of desserts. For some unexplained reason, the cook staff didn't want to make them. Instead, after 45 minutes our waitress decided to make them. Pretty underwhelming. I was hesitant to come here at first because of the yelp reviews. My family swears by this place and I'm very happy that I gave it a chance. We ordered 50 wings and fries and the wings were great. I recommend the scooter flavor. Lemon pepper and the grilled wings. The fries were really good and the tater tots. Also, it was trivia night and they had a bingo game in the restaurant. They did a great job of engaging the crowd and making it a fun environment. I will definitely be back. The beer cheese pretzel was quite large, served without plates and accompanied by a small amount of mustard, mild bite, and 'craft ale beer cheese' that tasted suspiciously similar to queso cheese. Our waiter was occupied attending to a large party and checked on us shortly after the food arrived at the table. Seating, orders, and plate running were handled by other employees. He did clear finished plates and process the check. Overall, this is a sports bar first and a good restaurant third. This has always been one of my favorite places to watch sports. Staff is very friendly and there's great views of the many TVs from from nearly every perspective. The one thing that was always a detriment was the food which was so so. That said, we decided about two weeks ago to get some food along with drinks. Have to say we were really surprised as to how GOOD things were! Since then we've ordered a number of things including wings, a Cuban, buffalo shrimp and a very yummy Monte Christo. They also have one of the best potato salads I think I've ever had! Give this place another try. You won't be sorry. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was great. My girlfriend ordered margaritas which was consistently refilled, not for me. The server came back with a margarita and my cup was empty. She didn't even ask if I needed a refill. We had to flag her down and ask her. My cup was empty for about 10min. We ordered 25 wings and one flavor we ordered was lemon pepper. Which when the wings came out it was just Buffalo sauce. It was my first time there too. The fried pickles there are amazing. Just curious as to why the wing count is 6,8,10 and then 25. Wendys chili blows this out of the box. Lastly, the Cobb salad was decent, but why was it served on a piece of parchment paper? My fork kept getting entangled in the paper and dumping the salad. I have never written a one star review before, but I felt compelled to because our visit last night was really that terrible. It started with the hostess telling us the wait was 20 minutes when no one else was waiting and there were several empty tables & servers wandering around too. Five minutes after giving us our wait time, she called us to go to our table. My husband ordered a gyro with onion petals & six breaded wings, and I ordered 10 wings. This order was not very complicated in my mind since Gators Dockside is known for their wings, so I thought we would eat rather quickly. Well, I was way wrong - it took more than 30 minutes for us to get our food! The entire time we sat there wondering what was going on because our server never once came to check on us. We watched him handle tables on either side of us, but he didn't even look our way. Once we got our food, each thing dumped unceremoniously on a plate, our server did stop to ask if we needed anything, but we declined. My wings (5 honey mustard, 5 medium buffalo) were on two separate plates that were warm so I am most positive they had been sitting under a heat lamp. They were not evenly coated, and on the small side too. My husband's wings were served the same way, and his gyro was small - he said it was the worst gyro he's ever eaten, and that says a lot because he gets them whenever they're on the menu at a restaurant. The only other bright spot was when we were done with our meal. Our server no longer had other patrons in his section, so he seemed to step up as he asked if I wanted a "to go" cup for my iced tea. My tap beer was super cold and fresh and the highlight of my meal. We waited 45 minutes for our food, and entrees and apps arrived at once. So that wasn't great. But we still had fun.
