Today for Valentine's I bought a vase with a white teddy bear, when paying for it the cashier insisted the teddy bear was extra and was missing its price tag....after letting me know of her suspicions and being proven wrong..,she did not even have the decency to apologize! I waited 8 minutes to purchase fried chicken at the butcher counter. I felt at first they didn't see me. But they were about 30 feet from me. So they continued to wait on others who came up to the counter even though all 3 of these people looked at me several times. I guess 30 feet is to far to walk. I shop gelsons because it is convenient but definitely not priced like Vons, Ralph's etc. They are much higher priced. I guess their employees are to tired to walk 30 feet. I would have given it two stars but upped it to three because I love their ahi poke and their seafood salad. Pricey it is but once in a while I can splurge for myself. Their prices are much too high for me but they had one day a week when the hot foods next to the soups were lowered from $8.99 a pound to $6.99 a pound. I went in once a week and bought hot food and then I picked up other items like the ahi poke. They discontinued the markdown day so I rarely go there now. The store compared to any other supermarket in the area is empty. One would think they would figure it out but they will go out of business one day and maybe a Trader Joe's will come fill the spot and be filled with customers. read more

Beautiful grocery store in the middle of Del Mar! If Sprouts and Whole Foods had a love child, it would be Gelson's. The store is clean and open and has a lot of options for health foods but it isn't as hipster and expensive like Whole Foods (although it is a pricier than Sprouts). There's plenty of parking up front and the staff is friendly. I'd definitely come back for more stuff! This is the place to go for honest, caring, and genuine good service. Erica is outstanding! Twice CVS has filled my daughter's prescriptions with medications which were only similar to the correct script. (CVS is contracted with certain drug companies and switched scripts without alerting us). Erica went the extra step, many steps... to correct the script from CVS. This took much of her time and attention out of her already busy day. And yes, I am reporting CVS. read more

It was great to see a new grocery store that focuses on quality. Although a little pricey, but worth every penny. I tried the Turkey Carver sandwich, and a slice of prime rib, melt in your mouth quality. I couldn't find a 24 pack of Gelson's 20 oz spring water, and when I asked an employee for the water, she went to the back of the store, and come out with the water. I was impressed. It's a pricey place, but worth every penny. The standards and quality are high, but you do get what you pay for in service and selection. It's not for everyone. I'll make few more trips here until they until the Pacific Beach location opens. read more

I shop at all the grocery and specialty stores in the North County and La Jolla areas and this is BY FAR the BEST store to shop in. Troy, the manager, is incredibly helpful. He remembers his customers and always asks me if he can help me find anything. I've witnessed him being incredibly patient with some very rude customers. I am always so happy to walk into this store because he runs it so well and the employees are always so nice and helpful. It is rarely crowded and has the best customer service. Sure, it is expensive, but if you're shopping at an upscale market in Del Mar/Rancho Santa Fe what do you expect? It isn't Walmart country people! If you're looking for the most pleasant place to shop in San Diego I highly recommend Gelsons. My favorite things are the amazing cupcakes and the fruit is the freshest in the area. The manager is racist to black peoples and Spanish. He only gives attention to people who are from Middle East. I am white but I was very disappointed when I saw him calling a black man the N word and he told Mexican family to go back to their country even though they were born here and they were speaking perfect English with no accent. If I was his buss I would fire him immediately. He has a bald head and he is wearing T-shirt, and jeans. He also yells at his work when they are behind the store. read more

The only employees there with a sense of urgency are the baggers. The checkers are always slow and are very inconsistent with their customer service. Today I didn't even get eye contact or any type of greeting like thank you, you're welcome, how's your day...they just go through the motions. The people working the deli are either clueless or rude and the managers are always talking/laughing and ignoring the long lines when I'm there. Prices are (for me) not conducive to complete grocery shopping although it is certainly in the right neighborhood. Can't really hold a candle to Whole Foods, just not enough depth or diversity of products. Particularly if you're vegan. I get a weekly 20% off coupon in the mail and usually stop in to buy some organic produce. The shelf presentation is really impressive and the store really shines. I am in love with Gelson's and I'm pretty sure I've never said that about a grocery store. The deli is better than many restaurants. The poached salmon...wow. The offerings at this store have been perfectly curated. None of the junk you don't want, and all of the great stuff you do want. I don't mind paying a bit more for food that I know has been carefully selected and handled. The fruit lasts a long time...probably because there's somebody in the back rejecting the dicey stuff and only putting out the best. My favorite: the beef section. I came in the first time on Christmas day and discovered the wine and sushi bar. Came back when it was open and been back 4 times in a week. The food is amazing but we don't just come back for the food. One of the managers, Lauren is the nicest, most helpful & friendly person that I have met in a long time. Kim & Amy that have worked in the bar while we were there are another reason we come back. Each day we found out something new about what they offer. Fresh fruit infused water daily, live music on Saturdays and drum roll please. .. . Bring your shopping list and have a glass of wine, sushi or beer and they will do the shopping for you! I don't understand what's going on with the management. For a store that's supposed to tout itself on high quality foods and service I see a lot lacking that really needs to be improved. Especially with the high prices. I've seen packages of hotdogs on the shelves with expiration dates that are to be used by the same day I'm shopping there. I was at the checkout line and realized the organic hotdogs I was about to buy had a use by date of that same day. Thats not ok. This has happened on more than one occasion. Who is holding the manager accountable for letting this happen? Gelson's needs to get on it. Way easier to go across the street to Whole Foods because I know the packaged refrigerated products will be fresher and more competitively priced. I like Gelson's because it is less crowded and easier to get in and out of. I like their rotisserie chickens and some of their specialty products but I really think they need to make sure their prepackaged refrigerated items on the deli and dairy aisle are constantly checked and older products are switched out. This store is so expensive that there are few prices shown. It is impolite to see how much you are getting ripped off for. Kind of like shopping for gasoline at Chevron. They have a wine bar to numb the effects of your final price. Stay away from this store unless you drive a Lexus or Mercedes. I had an awesome shopping experience at Gelson's today... i have been super busy and running around crazy and needed to quickly grab some things for a get together. From a service perspective... from each department I needed help from... each employee I encountered at this store had the right attitude: they helped me promptly and did so with a smile. No lethargic responses.... eye rolls... trying to hide from a customer that needed help... all things you might encounter from a poorly-managed store. A guy came over from the produce department to floral to blow up some balloons I brought in, while the bakery was custom-frosting some cupcakes. Kudos to the management here. Quality-wise... the selection here is amazing and the quality of the food, especially from the service deli, was incredible. Had a crazy-good shrimp and cucumber salad. Could tell the shrimp was freshly cooked and chilled prior to making the salad. Soooo good. Asian slaw was also incredible tasting. Is Gelson's going to hit the mark if you are looking for rock bottom prices? No. But if you value quality food, selection and service what a great store and asset to the area. read more

When I want to make sure I'm getting the highest quality food and the best customer service possible, I head straight to Gelson's. Having used to live in LA, I have a very strong opinion of Gelson's and it still surprises me when people who live down here are not familiar with this store. It is simply the best of the best, period served to you with top shelf customer service. Their meat department is amazing. The deli makes so many delicious meal options AND has a slicing station where you can get fresh carved, roasted turkey or prime rib whenever you want. The liquor section stocks some of my favorite beer, including tons of local craft beer. And their cheese section (right by an olive oil and vinegar tasting area) offers everything I have ever been looking for every time. They also have a new bakery that I've just recently started checking out, having been a fan of Little Cakes up in Vista for years. Its the same company, offering the same great cupcakes and cakes, but they have lots of new stuff too, including very tasty baguettes that I was told are being made in the store. I also had a sample of some granola they make that was simple, but really good and not too sweet. The people are always incredibly nice and helpful, too. They have a desk right up front where someone is always ready to help you out with anything you need. And the place is spotless. I've never been in a grocery store this immaculate. Do yourself a favor and get to Gelson's. It ain't cheap, but it is 100% worth every penny. read more

Wow, some of these reviews border on bizarre. Bitter much? Hostile much? I for one like this market and am glad for an alternative to Whole Foods. Yes, they're high priced. Very much so. But the quality is there and the service is awesome. I shopped at the Pacific Palisades store for years and like the quality. The produce is great, the meats are great and the selection of products is unmatched in SD. There is no reason to buy Cheerios or Saran Wrap at Gelson's, Go to Von's. But if you want good prepared foods or grape leaves or brioche buns, or guava soda or GOOD PRODUCE, Ralph's and Von's won't have it. There are many specialty products at Gelson's you won't find at regular super markets or WF. R's and V's have terrible produce. Albertson's was an abomination of a market. Von's meats are terrible. Ralph's is just ok. WF has good produce and great meats, but they don't carry many things I want. Haggen was almost identical to Albertsons. The quality at Gelson's is vastly superior. I cannot imagine how anyone can see this store as the "exact same thing." We went today for a quick sandwich and shopping. We split a freshly carved turkey sandwich (right off the bird). Hearing us quibble about how to dress it, the über helpful staffer offered to make half with grilled onions and gravy and the other half with cranberry sauce. We got a delicious Chinese coleslaw as a side. For take out we got a wonderful shrimp and cucumber salad with dill. You won't get that at Vons or Ralphs. Their prepared foods are gross. If you don't like their prices, don't shop there. I like having choice. I like veggies and fruits with flavor. I like super friendly and helpful staff. I like a clean store where the men's room doesn't require personal protective gear. read more

The store is nice, although some of the lay out seems odd. The selection of gluten free products is really lacking, which really surprised me. Also the section of "drugstore" items - cold medicine etc is lacking and crazy expensive. The bakery is nothing special, looks almost identical to Haggens. Honestly I am so disappointed at this store's prices - if I want to buy nice quality/overpriced produce and deli to-go items I have Whole Foods across the street. Just because I live in an affluent neighborhood doesn't mean I'm stupid and like to waste my money - so to Von's I will go for all my major shopping. I only gave them 2 stars because they are ridiculously expensive. 6$ for 2 peaches? The store is nice, they have great items and some really different brands which is nice. If you need to pick up certain things, then it is great. But not for Whole shopping. My son wanted this tiny 4 piece chocolate oreo cake which was about $15. We got it for him because it was what he wanted for his bday cake with a couple of his buddies. No big deal just what I can almost pay for a 1/4 sheet amazing cake with a special picture logo on it. Went to this location on 5/6/18. My sister and I went to the small bar in the store to have a glass of wine. We ended up having 2 glasses each of delicious wine. All thanks to our bartender "Yessica" she was amazing and really knows her wines. What a great personality she has! She made our experience so much fun! Her shift was over so Adam served us next and he was super knowledgeable too. I had the Flower Pinot Noir and sister had a Chardonnay. Next time you're in Gelson's stop in for a wine or beer. Really great staff and a nice little break. It's very relaxing and modern with low lighting so you don't even feel like you're in a supermarket. We had samples of their lobster bisque and clam chowder and also ahi poke, all were delicious too. We will be back. read more
