I ordered a complete Easter dinner from this Gelson's. At the last minute, I realized I had not ordered a turkey breast. I called and I was connected to a lovely lady by the name of Joy in the deli department. This was the day before Easter. I explained my situation and she told me Shawn, don't worry, I will make sure we add a turkey breast to your order. She was so kind and so professional went over my order with me. I don't come here often, especially for groceries. Honestly, I'm a Vons chick. I do however come here just for their little food court--wine bar, salad bar, deli, sushi bar, poke bar, steam table set up! So I was supposed to meet up with a gf to chat and catch up. We could have gone to Corner Bakery or 2nd & PCH, but it's been a quick minute since I've gone to Gelsons. I wanted to graze while sitting on their upstairs outdoor lounge with a view of the marina and 2nd St traffic. Not very popular when there's 2nd & PCH right across the street, which makes it even better--quiet and low key. Decided on the poke, because I saw an islander totally helped himself to a nice portion of poke. That was my cue that this must be good, so follow suit! Got a large bowl that come to $24+. When you want to spoil yourself, go to Gelson's. It's like everything they have is fancy and top of the line and pretty costly! Come ready to drop some bucks. Husband and I were coming here for some giardiniera. But the didn't carry the one we liked, bummer. Not to worry there is a long aisle of condiments to peruse and choose from. They had so many pickled products that were of super interest to us. Pickled brussel sprouts, yum. Pickled eggs, ugh - but we had to get it after seeing Grogu stuff eggs in his mouth in The Mandalorian peaked our interest to the next level. (It was pretty good with a beer chaser. Speaking of beer, the liquor department is well-stocked with wines, beers, and liqueurs of all sorts. For instance, tequila. You can get $16 bottles, or $70 top-shelf like Casamigos. There's a tequila for everyone. I love the bakery up in the front of the shop - but that would be another review for another time (Renaud's). Great bakery and coffee drinks! Check out the produce and fruit department where you will find perfection. Pricier than any other grocers for sure. As Husband would always put it, buy good quality fruits and veggies because it is literally cheap health insurance - because you are what you eat. We ordered Christmas Dinner at this store. It consisted of turkey breast and brisket and lots of fixings: mashed potatoes, creamed corn, green beans, Brussel sprouts, creamed spinach, gravy, etc. There was nothing wrong with the proteins, though the instructions for heating the turkey breast was way off. No way was it going to get heated from refrigerated in 20 minutes at 350 F. Double that maybe. My main complaint is with the sides. They were very low quality and watery. For example, the creamed corn was mostly liquid with a few niblets floating in it. In short, they were horrible. We won't do this again. Perhaps we might buy turkey or brisket but we'll do the sides some other way. read more

I was trying to order a pork crown roast when the young lady at the other end of the phone seems exasperated when I was trying to figure out how many days in advance I needed to order it and breathe heavily end of the phone as if she was being Annoyed with my questions but when I'm willing to pay $150 for a roast, I don't expect anybody to be annoyed, I take it all back. The young lady was having a some kind of a attack for breathing, and she tried not to cough into the phone, which I took as her being annoyed. She had the gumption to call me back and explain to me what actually happened? We got the order for the pork Royal pork Crown roast and I will be picking it up a week from this Sunday . The Customerservice is great because she had the gumption to call me back and explain most people don't bother they just go on their merry way and hopefully I'll be writing another report on how good the crown roast is try to have a good day everyone I know the times are hard and then after 82 years on this earth, I understand all the trials and tribulations and how things can be misinterpreted because we're already annoyed with our political problems read more

Gelson's is one the top stores in and around Long Beach. As I approached the entrance with my own bag a very nice young man alerted me that I wouldn't be able to bring in my own bag that I would be provided a bag free of charge. My basket was sanitized completely by the nice young man. The store was neat & clean most people were practicing social distancing. My initial reason to visit Gelson's was to purchase #swordfish, the only store in Long Beach that had a wide variety of fresh fish. The check out process was easy breezy with lines on the floor to make sure #socialdistancing was in affect. On the way out I couldn't pass Renaud's Bakery omg everything looked so yummy. I ordered a small mocha it was so yummy to go along with my mocha I got a coconut chocolate chip cookie it was yum also. I most definitely will return very soon..... read more

Don't get their noodles, specially the spicy Thai pasta, they always taste like they're about to get spoiled. They always have mountains of them, I'm sure they've been recycled that's why it tastes like that. I can only imagine the rest of their food. High price, low quality ready to eat food. read more

Great store, kept up very well and great selection. I am going to focus on the bar/restaurant. The upstairs patio is a great place to hangout with a wonderful view. The downstairs is great as well, met Sam as our server, she was super nice. The beer selection was pretty good and for $7, $5 on happy hour you can't beat that. I would avoid the crab cakes, I think these might be made in the morning and heated up as they did not seem fresh and for the price I was expecting better. read more

I was in the area and dropped by Gelson's because of their in store bakery(which deserves a review of its own). This was my first ever visit to any Gelson's, I guess I've heard I'd them from when I use to live in the valley but never visited. The store reminds me of "Whole Foods" or "Spouts"...and yet not really...I think they tiptoe a line between being a supermarket and a "health food store"...they have imported stuff that you'd find at a Cost Plus and the groceries at a Vons or Ralph's...and offer the organic brands you'd find at Wholefoods. If you shop at Whole Foods, nothing here is shocking, in terms of inventory and price. If you shop at Vons regularly, you may not find your favorite brand and the alternative is more expensive than what you normally pay for said item. Other than that, the store has a polished orderliness that i don't experience at most, if any grocery stores including Whole Foods (they have to compete against one across the street and is perhaps the reason this store is on its game). Also, what grocery store has a second level eating/gathering area. I didn't go up there but it's obvious when you park that this is a different kind of place. Lastly, Im not sure this the store or the people who frequent the store...I rarely saw grocery carts left in parking spots. I take note of the "left behind" grocery cart thing because it can be a hazard...I can't help but think, it's a reflection of the considerate nature of their customers...IDK. The "grocery/health food store/ restaurant? And bakery? " That IS this Gelson's is impressive. Update: Owner was super quick to publicly respond to my review, however, it has now been weeks since my horrible experience & customer service never bothered with any of it ever again. Props to you guys for pretending though! Very unwelcoming. Friend & I came late night shopping as we have a friendsgiving coming up and were short on time so we just decided to try finding something to bring from Gelson's. The atmosphere of the place was eerily quiet. Not that we mind, it's nice to shop peacefully, but it was just odd that not a single employee greeted us or offered us any assistance. It actually was my first time here & more likely than not last. We walked to the bakery & politely asked the young girl behind the counter for suggestions and tried making some small talk with zero reciprocation. We didn't come 5 minutes before closing or anything so we were genuinely confused as to why we were given the cold shoulder. Went to check out & asked the cashier how he was doing and he said "fine" in a flat tone. I honestly felt unwelcomed. No idea why they were both so cold. Place reeks of boujie and maybe we weren't dressed for the occasion? Apologies if scrubs aren't pretty enough to look at. I go to plenty of different supermarkets, all completely different in price ranges & I never get this treatment. I get greeted & if for some reason I don't get greeted, they at least say "hello" or "have a good night" back to me when I greet them. We went to Whole Foods immediately after & interacted with one employee and she restored our security. Just a small little greeting so we were acknowledged and so was she, being the hard worker she is. It doesn't take that much effort to say hi to someone. Prices are also ridiculous. Whole Foods was somehow cheaper. No reason to ever go into this store. Sorry if any employees were offended by us, but we literally did nothing wrong. This is one nice grocery store! The parking lot is huge, it is right by the beach, and the selection inside the store is comprehensive. I found my favorite espresso powder, exquisite apples so large they are a meal in themselves, and a wonderful bakery. I went there to get a birthday bouquet of balloons and flowers for my mother's birthday. I tried to order it online through Instacart, but the app is not very specific as far as colors or choices. I ended up speaking with Barbara, who made sure it was ready for pickup the next morning. The ladies that work in the floral department are more than helpful, and they orchestrated a perfectly beautiful arrangement for my mom. Every employee I talked to was pleasant and helpful, including the store manager. This Gelson's would be my main grocer if they were closer! read more

Love the exotic and beautiful produce that does tend to be pricey but good quality. And I find the hot and cold prepared food counter options overwhelming (in a good way). In addition to a remarkable array of fresh items on the salad bar, the containers you build your salad in are "100% compostable (feels like cardboard) bowls and 50% post consumer recycled plastic tops, so that's highly appreciated. But I'm disappointed that there is still so much plastic waste involved. We bought 3 sushi rolls, which involved 3 plastic bases, 3 plastic tops, and for some reason FOUR strips of plastic "grass"!! I see the benefit of having a clear plastic "box" for to-go sushi but this is Long Beach, where we collectively care about the environment a lot, so I don't think you'd get any complaints if you cut out the plastic grass! I truly love this grocery store. This store has so many options for gluten free and vegan. The fruits and vegetables are always the best I've seen. The customer service is always on point. This review comes especially from my experience on Christmas Eve. I really want to say thank you so much for having holiday selections in your hot bar area. As a single person who wanted to celebrate Christmas with a nice dinner without having to cook for an army, your hot bar made this possible. I was able have green bean casserole, mashed sweet potatoes, regular mashed potatoes, baked apples and more! After going to several other stores that day looking for this, I thought the hope was gone, but you guys really did it well. Thank you so much for providing holiday options for your guests! You made my dinner amazing. But the real reason I'm actually writing this review was to say thank you to Ramona in deli area. You have to be a conspicuous spender to buy anything here. Prices are off the charts. You pay 3x here for the same item anywhere else. Nothing real special. Even cheese selection is pedestrian and no better than trader joes. Frankly, I shop at Whole-foods and for the most part is reasonably priced comparatively. I asked for veal demi and they point me to beef bouillon and said that's all we have. Place next door had 2-3 kinds in stock. Use to love the old Lucky's market it replaced. And filet did not cost $60/pound. Lazy acres is little more than half of that. Shopping at Gelson's is like going to a supermarket located in an MLB stadium. That beer is $20. Shook our heads and went to Gelson's. Were led - not directed - to the cookie aisle and shown two different varieties of ladyfingers. And the lobster salad...always a family favorite. Gelson's is a fine grocery store, with great service, wide aisles, impeccably clean and I have no idea how they stay in business in this Long Beach location. Its rarely crowded, usually 1 or possibly 2 cashier lines open. I love it but it is pretty expensive for the commodity stuff. They have a great beef & meats selection but damn, you need to save up to afford a steak here. I use Gelson'smostly for what I consider harder to find items, otherwise Von's and Ralph's are just fine. Their cold and hot bar is always good but let me tell you how pricy my salad bar was due to adding seafood in there! $27 for one salad due to the weight but it was literally a salad for 1 or 2 lol with shrimp I had to literally give the salad back lol because I felt $27 for a grocery store salad wasn't worth it! Went to Gelsons yesterday to just pick up a russet potato to bake. All of the potatoes looked like they had been sitting there for a long time. When I took my purchase to the cash register I found out why: $1.99 a Pound !!!!! Not even an overpriced Organic Potato... Just a run of the mill Russet! I recently started shopping at Gelsons mostly for the local organic produce, organic milks, eggs and cheese. They have been nicely stocked during the pandemic and are very friendly when greeting me at the door. The employees are very helpful if I need help finding a product. Very professional overall. I heard about a wine bar that recently opened at Gelsons and today was a perfect day to try it. The have a nice selection of beers and even bigger selection of wines. I thought I would try the Whispering Angel Rosé from cotes de provence. It was chilled and delicious. Also looked over the tapas and sushi menu and ended up with a cheese plate that had a variety of cheeses, nuts, crackers, dried fruit and jam. There is a counter where you can watch 2 flat screen tvs, and 3 more tables for seating. I sat at the counter and watched the Tokyo Olympics and chatted with the friendly attendent. He made sure we always had everything and were content. He had suggested if we wanted to order groceries to fill out a list and they would pick everything out while we drink. So, we ordered some groceries and one of the other attendants picked everything up for us and brought them straight to us for checkout at the wine bar. It was a wonderful experience and I think I'll go again soon to have some wine and something else off the menu to eat and while someone picks my groceries again. read more

OK, this place has been open for a while and I've been meaning to visit but hadn't had a particular reason til this past Sunday. I had some girlfriends coming over for a Sunday Funday and I wanted to get a nice dessert for our gathering. I remembered someone getting a really nice cake at the Pasadena Gelson's so I decided to take a gander at their selection. First of all, the store is so IMMACULATE I'm sure Jesus would not have minded being conceived there. The floors gleam, the products are lined up just so, and the produce stacks look like works of art. They have a huge deli, they have an upstairs outdoor cafe, they have a wine bar, and they also have this great bakery called Renaud's, where I spied the beauty that would be mine... I forget what the darn cake is called but I've been calling it Piano Cake (see my pic) because it looks like a beautifully polished piano, all dark gleaming surface concealing a chocolaty bliss that could very well destroy you but then make you grateful for your very own destruction. Hyperbole? Perhaps. But barely. This probably isn't the place to do all your everyday grocery shopping, as the prices are on the high side, but if I need another last-minute special occasion pastry item I'll know where to go! read more

I visited this store yesterday for lunch. I decided on a sandwich and was assisted by Rosie. I asked for the #9 brisket sandwich from the onscreen menu. Met up with my boss here on a casual Tuesday afternoon. Nothing too busy or packed, just a few people either taking a day off or having a casual lunch meeting. Ambiance: Parking: On a Tuesday afternoon, I had no trouble finding parking. The place can probably house 50 cars and if it's packed, you can park yourself in the plaza next door! Seating: Pair seating inside. Downstairs AND upstairs seating. Upstairs has an awesome view of the water and boats. Feels: At an extent it feels very high end but it's nothing formal. A good place to have a casual meeting or study. Food: This part of the review is to be completed as I have yet to try everything. The only thing I tried was Pete's Coffee which was standard as usual. I look forward to their hot foods and the wine bar. Customer Service: Passed by a worker 3 times. Usually it's awkward but he provided a kind greeting each time. Cheers to him! Overall: 4 stars. Beautiful, very expensive ($$$) bougie market! I took my grandpa here for pastries and coffee and he really enjoyed it. PARKING: super ample and very easy SERVICE: the staff was friendly and very accommodating, they met my request of heating up our pastries for us! FOOD: my grandpa got a coffee and I got a cappuccino. Both were good but nothing to necessarily write home over. I got the golden raisin scone and my grandpa got a pain aux raisin (raisin pinwheel croissant basically). Hmmmmm....Gelson's market is like Choices and Urban Fare all rolled into one. One part has a little bar where you can have a glass of wine and another side offers prepared deli foods (salads and meals). This is handy because there are times where I don't want to eat out or get take out. Another part is the grocery where the items are laid out like a beautiful display. I find the items on the pricier side, such as a small cheese platter can be around $25.00 However, they also have items that I wouldn't find at another grocery store such as a half and half that is plant based or creme fraiche. They have a bakery area where you can get a coffee and a flakey croissant and bring it to the upstairs patio to eat. I have to say that they have one of the best croissants ever!! read more
