So it was my first time at this Gelson's. I'm a Whole Foods kinda guy so it being my first time at this location, I gotta say it was new, nice and very clean!!! We sat at the bar by the food court, they had 4 beers on tap, a couple seasonal ones. There food court area is very nice, there selection of food is very diverse. That being said we ended up ordering at the bar. We had there lobster sandwiches in this scrumptious bread French roll. Go and try it. You'll love it. I gave them 3 stars because the gentleman was none attentive to us and took too long for certain requests. The lobster roll is still worth it. Enjoy! read more

I wish I would have took a picture of him or complained to the store manager about this employee. When I went to the kitchen section; with my 3 small children yesterday afternoon, I was looking at their selection and got to the pizza/hot foods section. My husband was near the poke section and I took our children. As I'm walking up I saw two men both looked middle aged, balding, one looked Hispanic short and fat, the other being an overweight African American. They were speaking with each other and looking at me and laughing,so red flag number one. I felt uncomfortable but my children were hungry so I tried my best to ignore it. Then the black guy comes and says what do you want? with an aggressive tone, so I look at the pizza section because my son wanted pizza. My son is looking at the pizza selections and this guy gets upset because my son it's trying to decide. Mind you he decided under a minute that he wanted pepperoni. I tell him my order he's like huh, apparently his hearing is bad so if you go a see him make sure to yell your order. Anyway he proceeded to put two cold pizza slices in a box and slams the box on the counter, again extremely aggressively. So at this point I'm so confused because I don't understand what his issue is and why he's being so aggressive with me. So I give my son his box and honestly I was going to leave but my two toddlers wanted MAC and cheese. So I'm trying to see how I would order it. Theres pricing by pound then there's images of cups by ounces, since it's my first time here, I would have liked to have felt safe enough to ask but his hostile demeanor, I felt completely unsafe. There is no one else behind the counter at this time but this aggressive as man. So again I tried to get his attention and he ignored me so I go to see if I can call anyone else who works there and he finally decided to come when I started looking around, again with the same attitude. He slams the container. I asked for a pound a beef he gave me 2. Not only did he keep giving me more food so it was more expensive I didn't even feel comfortable telling him because he was so freaking aggressive and I had my children with me. I understand he is miserable, most likely hates his life and job and that's why he's so extremely rude, but honestly he shouldn't be working in customer service. He's absolutely horrible and I don't understand why anyone would hire someone so blatantly disrespectful. Maybe it's because he's the only African American who works there in that entire store that they don't fire him and need one poc to make them diverse. I don't know but he's horrible. I love supporting local businesses in my community. I usually go to whole foods but I wanted a change and this experience left me never wanting to come back; I see why it's empty now. Horrible customer service, over priced food. I paid restaurant prices for bland, salt less, mediocre food. If you have children steer clear from this place. When the gentleman answered I told him I was holding for an item that was not meat related. I thought he would of transferred me back to customer service , but instead hung up on me . The bakery is sublime, but I show up twice a week for the poke bar. Most of the local poke places are around $20 now and you don't have any control of quantity on the ingredients. With Gelsons I can choose exactly which ingredients and scoop as much as I want. My bowl usually ranges from $17 to $20 and it's exactly what I want. I swing over to the sushi area and pick up a side of the pickled ginger and I'm good to go. I wish they had raw salmon on the poke bar, maybe consider it? Gelson's probably isn't your first thought for houseplants but I have to say they have a really nice selection and the prices are less than Ralphs. read more

I have been shopping at Gelson's in Newport Beach since 1984 and over the past few months I have noticed a definite decline in the quality of produce and the store overall. The shelves are poorly stocked and favorite items are only available off and on. Employees that have been there for along time are gone and the a lot of the new ones are not friendly or helpful. Honestly they seem overworked and very unhappy. I continue to go because of the convenience but may have to rethink my decision and drive a little farther. So Janne was my cashier today. She gave me attitude like there's no tomorrow. haha. Nobody was at the counter and she saw me there. Waited a couple of minutes Then finally yelled out at me I'll be there in a minute! When she finally stops stacking the shelf to cater to me, she goes to the check-out counter and lectures me on where I should have put the basket. It was a pull out shelf that wasn't out when I got there, maam. You should have been there to do that. I'm having a good day, but they just lost a good customer. So I hate to even write a review because I love this store so much. It's my first review but I'm hoping things aren't shifting at the store and I hope it's not neglecting what made the experience here unique. I love Gelsons because of its customer service and extra care they take, there are a lot of other groceries that hit the same price point or less in the area, but I come here because it's a great environment and the people are attentive to their customers. Today I felt when I went to the registered there was no care. The woman who checked me out was very abrasive and borderline rude. I felt like she was trying to prove how fast she could check someone out even though there was barely anyone in the store, tossing my groceries onto the belt with little care and telling me I could pay before even starting to really ring me up. Maybe they were having an off day, but I just felt like I was being pushed out of the store and literally there was no one in line behind me it was 11am on a Tuesday. I hope the managers aren't pressuring store clerks for fast service versus care because otherwise I'd just go to a fast food restaurant if I was looking for that kind of service. read more

I am truly impressed with this store and their meat/seafood department. Its October and it is Dungeness Crab Season! Yeahhhhhh! We asked the folks in the seafood department to order two large Dungeness Crabs! Talk about succulent and sweet! These crabs were amazing. So last night we had cold crab with sourdough bread and today we used the leftovers for what else crab cakes. Wow...what a flavor! Thanks for the recommendation and for cleaning them for us! Similar to my Whole Foods in Huntington Beach but a little smaller I came here with my sister to grab some items for the house. When we entered, we were pleasantly surprised by their large variety of beautiful fresh flowers. After going over the flowers, we went further and was greeted by their friendly employees inviting us to indulge in their samples. All shelves were stocked with items that were neatly organized. The fresh items were super fresh and in all good condition. Like Whole Foods, they have a take out area of cooked and fresh foods for those on the go. They also had a deli, pizza area, wine bar, and bakery. Their bakery is a little small. There was a lot of macarons and cookies, but not so much cakes. My favorite thing about this place is peaceful patio upstairs for those that want to snack and relax. Overall, this is a good alternative to my regular health market. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this market. Entering, I immediately noticed how clean and bright everything is. It's easy to see why Gelson's is recognized as one of the premier supermarkets. The produce section is absolutely grade A. You won't need to pick anything out, every fruit and vegetable looks perfect. The meat and seafood selections are of the highest quality and they look it and cost it too. No cart traffic here...the aisles are wide and kept clear. The deli, salad, soup and hot food bar looks fresh and appetizing. I'm not a huge salad eater, but the long salad bar is amazing. The prime rib, tri-tip and turkey sandwich carving station along with a Wolfgang Puck Express pizza will certainly entice your appetite. Instead of just offering a wine aisle, Gelson's has a high-end wine bar called the Gateway. A roof top patio lounge with a fireplace and views of the marina is a great place to sit, sip your wine and relax. LOBSTER ROLL with a glass of Chardonnay? Forizzle? Yes foshezzy. That's what satisfied my belly this evening here at Gelson's. Usually I pass right by THE WINE BAR, but not this time. This little bar has a TAPAS MENU with a selection of wines and beers. They have a small selection of ready pour wines as well as beer on tap...one being, HEY STELLA!! Which is one of my favorite beers, also reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from "A Street Car Named Desire" Marlon Brando. Along with their adult beverages, they also have tapas. Enters the mini Lobsta roll, which was very tasty...wouldn't change a thing. The Chardonnay was complex, yet light and refreshing, with notes of vanilla and cedar accompanied by a basket of fruit hitting you throughout, also with a very long finish...Perfect combo. Tossing in a good cigar after would seal the deal...hmm. Gelson's is one of the leading upscale markets around. Opening its first store in Burbank 1951. From the FRESH HIGH QUALITY PRODUCE to the awesome HOT/COLD FOOD BAR, Gelson's has it all. But too pricy. Instead of shoving those coupons in my mailbox every frickin week, why not just lower your prices to begin with? STOP SPENDING money on those ads, and wasting paper that just gets tossed in the small (recycle)trash can next to my mailbox, and return those savings to me, your customer? On a good note, they do have a friendly staff here that are eager to serve you. Everywhere I turned a staff member would be asking me if I would like assistance...kudos for that. In my opinion, they have one of the best bakeries around. Ranaud's is sitting in the front of the store just as you are exiting the cashiers. They originated in Santa Barbara 2008, and a perfect addition to Gelson's. Don't forget to try their macaroons. They are one of the best I've had. Sometimes I'll grab an espresso and a pastry, and chill upstairs on the spacious Terrance overlooking the Marina area. I do like going to this store, however due to the high pricing, which is why I gave 4 stars, I don't come here much as I'd like to, there are more reasonable alternatives nearby. read more

Spoke to Tina one of the Manager's she was a very nice happy Manager. Well we come here twice a week tonight we came for the bakery items & coffee. Upon walking to the bakery this kud was cleaninf up even though the store will be open more than 2 hrs.? So everything in the cases were gone? With the exception of those fancy cakes no one buys and a couple other hard to sell sweets. I said everything is gone already, being ignored. Then I said any more cookies or other items put in the back? Then he got a nasty atittude he said they are in the back what do you want? There were 3 of us so I proceeded to tell the others the items they might want could be put away already, when this kid rasies his voice at me! I told him oh no don't you yell at me!!! Then I told me family what I wanted and the snotty guy said some stupid stuff so I said we do not want anything. I know the bakery is not part of Gelson's so I let Tina know what happened, she says she will report it. We bought what we wanted from inside the store and went to the private patio. Located just a stone's throw from where we SUP'd (Stand Up Paddle) off Mother's Beach, we were pleased to see Gelson's new store ready to offer up to two hungry paddler's a cornucopia of edible treats from baked, deli, salad, sandwich, sushi, and fresh cooked options to groceries and necessities filling a huge floorspace of selections. Outdoor seating in the upstairs patio overlooking the harbor filled with boats, we sat and enjoyed freshly-made Cobb salad, shrimp and curried cauliflower salads and turkey, swiss and avocado sandwiches. It was expensive but good. It's going to be nice to have this option available when deciding what to make for dinner with a walk-through of Gelson's being an easy fix. Who'll notice? I cook good on any occasion but sometimes it's just much easier to fork over the dough and pick up something that requires no major effort to throw down. Bobby Flay couldn't argue with that logic. Today, we came hungry and ready to wolf down a good lunch. We did that. But next time, without doubt, we're going to stop at the dessert section. I was surprised to see a nice bar near the, what I would call a mini food court with a wide variety of hot and cold food. Selections from Sushi to Roast Beef and Mac and Cheese plus variety of cold salads. Bar seating for a quick meal and beverage of your choice. Also there is fresh prepared food packaged and ready to take home and heat. I had Mini crab cakes which were pretty good. The Bartender was welcoming, with a friendly smile and pleasant. Honestly, this was the NICEST Gelson's, and I've been to a good handful of them. I didn't realize that they have different bakeries..... at least, this one does. We have Viktor Benes up in the Los Angeles area. Renaud's Bakery is completely foreign to me, yet it is this Gelson's signature bakery. The prepared foods section is much more elaborate....... larger and more food offered all the way around. They even have a wine bar !! They also have an outdoor patio area upstairs, which offers a very nice view. The store itself offers the same gourmet quality food....... fabulous produce, top quality meats and fish, higher end food brands than you'd find elsewhere (plus the regular brands)..... but with prices to match. I love Gelson's, but it's a bit steep for everyday shopping......once in awhile, and when I want to impress, but not a daily dose of this. read more

This review is for the deli counter. I come here for lunch expecting it to be better for some reason, but it never is. I sometimes have a craving for a chicken salad sandwich or wrap, and this is the first place that I can think of that offers that. However, each time I go, I am disappointed with how little chicken salad they put on my sandwich - just enough to be like a thin layer of mayo. They often get my order wrong, they forget the cheese, they don't add salt (which their chicken salad always needs lots of), they put the wrong vegetables. You can get a combo with two salads as well, and the salads aren't usually very good either. read more

Clean and fresh look. Friendly employees , fresh food prepared and they have a bakery. I got my fav White Chicken Chili and it was great as always. The piece of pot roast that I bought was a bit tough so I easily received a refund. I stopped by the bakery and bought a black tea and a Coconut Macaroon...OMG the macaroon was so good. It saddens me to give a store like Gelson's a 1 star review. After the interaction I had here today, I will not be returning until at least 2021, nor will any of my family members. I was shopping here with a family member and while we were in line waiting to check out, the customer in front of us began yelling at us in a very barking like way. She carried on about how we were standing too close to her, yet we were an easy 6-7 feet away from her. We stood there in shock that this was even happening, questioning our safety. Meanwhile, not one Gelson's employee or security stepped in to assist us with this irate customer! After a few minutes, a Gelson's employee loudly announced that there were red pieces of tape on the ground in the checkout lines and to please wait at the red line to give all customers space and safety. Okay Gelson's, I've got news for you. The customer yelling at us in line wasn't standing at her designated red line on the floor, so why wasn't someone telling her to get on her red line? Why wasn't the "red line" being explained as customers approached the checkout? All cashiers could have easily asked each customer in line to please stand at the red lines on the floor and this whole incident could have been prevented. Gelson's claimed that the red lines spaced apart was for customer safety, yet when there was an irate customer yelling at us, where was our safety?! There was security personnel outside at the front of the store and at the toilet paper, yet where was security at the checkout lines where we needed security?! Gelson's, maybe you should stop and think about who could possibly be shopping in your store....not only am I a medical professional, but I am also a health educator. I could be an MD for all you know. I think I have enough common sense as to understand how close is too close to someone. Just wow! My question to Gelson's is, how is spacing people apart in line supposed to be for customer safety, yet you have crowded aisles with customers on top of each other, and better yet, the cashier is standing right across the counter when you are entering the checkout which is closer than the space between the pieces of tape on the floor! Gelson's, you claim that you care about customer safety, yet where was our safety while an irate customer was yelling at us, making us feel totally unsafe in YOUR store??? I have read the management responses here and yes, you have tarnished your reputation in the eyes of my family and I, and no, we will not be returning to your store any time soon due to the lack of safety and common sense we experienced at your store! read more

This review has been long overdue. My coworker first told me about this place over a year ago when I mentioned to him that I was looking seeking for delicious poke (tuna ahi poke). Tried my luck there and boy was I glad that I did. Wife and I purchased the Spicy Ahi tuna poke. The tastiest and freshest poke I have ever eaten. You won't be disappointed. One pound for me and half a pound for the lady. Took it home and had brown rice on the side and I was in heaven. The tuna just melts in your mouth fresh. While we were at it we saw something thru the window which read " Smoked Alaskan candy" and asked the worker what is was. It turned out to be smoke Alaskan Salmon and boy was it also delicious. Love this supermarket, wish there was one downtown. Love it because it has ahi poke! Don't know of any other store that sells poke. Homesick for some Hawaiian pickings. It's a bit pricey for some things, depending on what you need. Mostly it is on par with other supermarkets as they do have some specials on basic items. Anyways, it is now a bit more deserted than when it opened up last year, which I like. It's like a buffet when I head over to the salad bar and mix and match some food to take home with me. Wolfgang's pizza, some steaming hot meats, some seafood salad, some olives, sushi, all freshly made. I know I could make half of these things at home but sometimes I just want a bite of everything without having to cook. I picked up my turkey dinner for 12 on a Saturday for a Sunday early Thanksgiving. Well, the 18 lb. turkey was frozen solid and needed overnight to defrost. That is when I saw the blood and knew that the turkey was not completely "ready to eat" as the package said. I had to roast it two more hours to come up to cooked temperature. Quite disappointed in this lack of Gelson quality. All the side dishes were also frozen solid but could be reheated when needed. Not what I expected from this high end store. Not necessarily the store for the frugal, but matcha is hard to find. Therefore, with blinders on my shopper's eyes, I made my maiden voyage. Even though I'm sure a cartoon balloon appeared over my head "I'm a cheapskate" the staff was extremely helpful locating the tiny tin of matcha, also volunteering to call me with information about another hard-to-find item. Those blinders were necessary when passing the bakery. But I did sniff out some delicious, freshly made soup which was reduced in price! I'd go there for something special but I wonder if this rich lady's haven doesn't have that wine bar to serve as an adult ball pit.
