Looking at the Goodspeed Opera House
    Jim L.

We went on a beautiful evening and sat on the patio. The view of the river is one of the best. I rarely eat burgers but had a bit of a craving for one so I ordered the Gelston burger. I might have to say this was the best burger I've ever had. Buttery bun. Huge patty and bun. Good special sauce. Just really enjoyed it. We went inside and it's a different experience. Totally posh and much higher priced. I did think the patio prices were a bit high and really no free ice tea refills. That's a no class move. Service was friendly but it does matter when you go how fast you are seated.

Beautiful setting on the river adjacent to the Goodspeed Opera House. We enjoyed a glass of wine on the patio while waiting for our dinner reservations. It was so pleasant that we asked if we could remain there for our meal, and were cheerfully accommodated. The food was excellent and our server great. We enjoyed shared appetizers of crab cakes & calamari. I thought the crab cakes were small for the price ($19 for 2). I was a bit surprised that the sauce was served on the crab cakes rather than on the side, but they were delicious so it wasn't a problem. The fried calamari ($17) was plentiful and also delicious; in this case the red sauce was served separately. A bottle of crisp, cold Matua Sauvignon Blanc ($40) was the perfect accompaniment. My dinner was the Gelston chicken ($27), a breaded boneless chicken breast with a lemon sauce, served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I was able to substitute asparagus for the mixed veggies with no upcharge. The biggest problem is, if there's a show at the Goodspeed next door, parking is nearly impossible.

I bought the dinner and show tickets. We enjoyed dinner at the gelston house. Choices were limited for this package special, but it were able to find something to our liking.

My daughter and I went for lunch before seeing the play next door at the GoodSpeed Opera House. I got the fish and chips and she got the NY stip steak. I had fries and she had mashed potatoes and vegy. She said her entire meal was so good she wished it was cold out side so she could bring her leftovers home. I felt the same way. The breadcrumbs on my fish were very crispy just the way I love them. The fish was haddock and was so good but because the left overs would be sitting in a warm car for hours couldn't happen. The place is beautiful and our young waiter was so friendly and accommodating. My daughter has severe gluten allergy and he made sure the kitchen was aware of that. It was our 1st time here and because of the gluten free options available and the wonderful food we will definitely make this a must do again. Give it a try you will love it but again it is very pricy but worth the money. The atmosphere was very old and nostalgic. Very clean and attractive. They have a bar and make holiday specials, she got the apple juice mule. I got wine. You get plenty of food.

Love the small cozy dining room with fireplace. Food and service pleasant as always. It's our "go to" place in the village.

What's the dress code for dinner before show at good speed. Do people dress up?

Some people dress and some don't. I've seen flannels and jeans as well as gowns and ties. It's probably however you want to dress to enjoy the show. I usually go in jeans and a nice shirt or sweater (60 y/o male). Definitely go and enjoy a show!

Contemporary wood paneled room with a window wall overlooking the river below. Expertly made martinis followed by watermelon beet and feta salad; and wild mushrooms with Parmesan bread crumbs, mint, fried rosemary and whipped ricotta. Both were very tasty expressions of the season. Our table raved over the tagliarini with a local beef, pork and veg ragu and a shellfish version with a spicy puttanesca. The menu changes regularly to highlight the best of the season and local producers. Sometimes it's nice to eat delicious food with no blasting music, at reasonable prices (app/salads: $12-16, most entrees high 20's to $36) just hanging with happy well fed adults enjoying conversation. It would have been 5 stars but for the forgetting of complimentary bread service until we asked for it during the entrees. The bread was mediocre and chewy. Our primary waitperson sort of disappeared for a bit. An evening special of soba noodles with julienne vegetables was really just a bowl of noodles with little evidence of any veggies. Regardless, I've recommended to about 10 people already today and I'll keep doing so!!

A while ago, my wife and I had a positive experience at River Tavern. That experience has endured…read morein our minds through a number of less positive experiences. After a recent disappointing experience at RT with my son and father, I have to accept that the the initial positive experience may be the exception and not the rule. RT is located in Chester Center, which is a top CT town. Top tier location. The restaurant is cute, but cramped. After we were seated, a while passed before we saw our server. We were ready to order for 10 minutes and she still hadn't checked in with us. I told another employee that we wanted to see our server. She shook her head and we waited another 5 minutes. We finally were able to order. Then people who arrived after us, and ordered after us, received food first. Multiple tables. Through multiple service issues, there was no recognition from the employees about the issues. Our primary server asked how things were going when she first checked in with us. I told her the truth. And she didn't seem like she cared. She was apparently hoping that I would just say "good". The food was mixed. My son and I split a burger and an order of chilaquiles. The chilaquiles was good. The burger was medium rare rather than the medium we asked for. The burger was underseasoned. It may not have been seasoned at all. The bottom part of the bun was cut at a weird angle. As the juices flowed from the burger, it soaked the short side of the burger bun so that it was unusable. My Dad said his salad featuring peaches and nuts, barely had any peaches or nuts. I'm unlikely to eat at River Tavern again anytime soon. 2.5 Stars
