During my engagement, I got pregnant and was THAT girl who had to get her ring sawed off. We then inherited a beautiful wedding set, which was extremely meaningful and we planned to use that for our rings in our upcoming ceremony. About a week ago, my fiance brought my original engagement ring to Gem Design Jewelers to finally get it repaired. We went back 3 days ago so that they could size it to my finger, which was a very pleasant experience. Victoria was very kind and helpful (and my baby *loved* her). I asked them about price/timeline for eventually resizing my inherited set, and that's what made my experience yelp-worthy. Jeremy came over and fully explained what he would do to resize, and ultimately restructure, my set. He was very considerate of my wedding stress and reassured me that he would get them to us by Wednesday at the latest. I had no intention of leaving my very meaningful wedding set there when I walked in that day, but I am *so* glad I did! I loved this set very much from the beginning. But the way Jeremy redesigned it to my finger when he resized it, and restored it to its original beauty by fixing prongs etc (things I would not have thought of), is CRAZY. He made it *my* ring while also honoring my grandmother's original set. I am so obsessed with this set, and I am so grateful that I trusted them with it! Purchased my wedding set from Gem andoved it. I even went back to buy an additional diamond band to go with it. My husband purchased a ruby ring from GEM a few years prior. As several years went by my bridal set didn't shine nearly as much as it did in the store, this is after having it cleaned numerous times. My husband and I are going to renew our vows with a new ring set. Until then I bought a CZ ring somewhere else, just until we were ready to renew. I took it to GEM to have it soldered together. He charged a $125 AND said it would be ready in 2 weeks. Today, I pulled up to the front door thinking I would be in and out. The first person I saw was a very nasty woman in jeans who looked like she just rolled out of bed. I was very happy and said "hi I'm here to pick up my ring" she scolded me like a child and said "go park properly" and so I did. Her attitude just got worse. She asked with again a nasty tone "did you get call" "do you have slip". I honestly didn't see where it said "we will call when it was ready. I asked to speak to owner and she said flat out "NO" I asked why and she said "HE BUSY". I demanded to see him. She had a smiling grin on her face. It certainly wasn't funny. The owner kept harping and harping about the parking and the ring not being ready. I kept trying to explain I didn't care if my ring wasn't ready and I understand about the parking. It was about the girls nasty nasty attitude. I got my rings back and refund and left. I went to a different small jewelry store and everyone was was so nice, professional and dressed appropriately. They charged me $25 and the ring will be ready on Monday. I worked for a very well-knownd insurance company. I had people yelling at me half the day (rate increases)! I acted professionally and dressed professionally, never once being rude. read more

Had such an enjoyable experience getting a ring resized. The large, chain jewelers told me resizing would take over 2 weeks because of the holidays. Imagine my surprise when Gem Design told me they could have it finished in 2 hours!!! Only a couple days before Christmas AND on a very delicate ring with multiple diamonds. True to their word, I received a call as soon as it was done only 1.5 hours after I dropped it off. The customer service experience was also wonderful. Extremely friendly staff (including an adorable Newfoundland lazing about behind the counter, ready for a friendly scratch on the head). Recently used the diamonds in a family heirloom piece to make 3 custom rose gold eternity wedding bands, and they are BEAUTIFUL. Jeremy worked with me to make exactly what I wanted, and I got tears in my eyes when i saw the final product. I love these guys!! My sapphire bracelet clasp broke while I was out shopping. I stopped into the store and had Jeremy take a look, it crumbled in his hand. I don't know what I did but I figured I'd be with my bracelet for a week while it was being repaired. Knowing that I never take my bracelet off because I love it so much (I bought the bracelet at Gem Design and have been a customer there for many years) Jeremy told me not to worry. Anthony came out and took my bracelet in the back where all the jewelry magic happened and fixed it in 5 minutes. I love these guys!! They go the extra mile to make sure their customers are happy and taken care of. Very personalized care here. They even insist I bring in my jewelry every 6 months for prong checks to make sure I'll never lose a stone from a ring or bracelet. They clean the jewelry every time they check! I never worry that I'm going to suddenly look at my ring and the Diamond will just be missing, or a sapphire fell out. Repairs are always quick and reasonably priced. A little jewelry shop in an older, unassuming strip mall. Sounds sketchy, you say? Wrong, you are! Family owned and operated by a brother-sister jeweler duo (Jeremy and Katie), with their mom (Jean) and good friend (Alicia) working the front-of-the-house. They do a ton of custom work--it's what they're known for. I've had a few wheelings and dealings with the crew here, all pleasant. First visit was a few years ago to pick up some beads (LoveLinks brand, that are compatible with Pandora/Chamilia/Troll bracelets--great quality for the price) for a Christmas gift. Alicia (sales rep) was more than helpful giving background with why they carry the LoveLinks brand...and why they're just as good, if not better than, Pandora beads. Fast forward a couple of years to a life changing event; I need a ring sized. Ring was purchased/designed out of state so I couldn't get it serviced where I got it. I brought it in and they sized it within a day, because they do all repairs in house. No need to send your valuables out for weeks at a time, like you would when dealing with a big box store. (I also needed some stone repairs on said ring, dropped it off and they had it back on my hand in 48 hours.) I had a ton of questions about anniversary bands. Jeremy and Kirsten were able to answer them all. I wanted to incorporate diamonds from different pieces we've inherited along the way. Kind of an heirloom piece, but, I didn't want a traditional look either. Jeremy was excited and involved in the whole process. I am extremely happy with my beautiful new custom made wedding ring created by Jeremy from Gem Design. He made it with my original marquise diamond from my original gold wedding ring from 20 years ago which was bent and needed several new prongs. I decided to spend my money on something updated and different but, I still wanted to use my original diamond. I also changed from gold to white gold. Jeremy promised that the ring would match perfectly to the wedding band that his friendly staff helped me pick out and it does. It's one of a kind and I absolutely love it. I brought 2 watches in to replace the batteries. I also had a necklace and an earring to repair. I had to pay the total bill upfront which was $119.00 Only one watch got a new battery and I was told they would call when the rest was finished. It was 2 weeks before I finally called and was told the watch and earring were ready but the necklace was taking more time. Once at the store, I was told the watch had to be sent out because it needed more than a battery and I they wanted $32.00 more. I asked why I wasn't notified and didn't get an answer. Not happy but it was a gift from my daughter so I paid. It's a watch I wear out occasionally, and maybe put it on to go out to dinner about 4 times. Then it stopped working. I took it back and they said the repair guy would look at it. Then I get a call ( I asked to be called before anything was done) saying it would be $150.00 to fix it! I said no and picked it up and asked for the $32 I had to pay to "fix" it the first time. I was told no. I would not recommend this place to family or friends read more

I went to Gem Design Jewelers because I'm not from Buffalo and they were the closest jeweler to my new house here. I was looking for a jeweler to reset my engagement diamond into something unique, which Jeremy seemed quite excited about - so I felt that this would be the best place to do it. One of the first things he asked me was how much I wanted to spend. I was also trading in a new diamond semi-mount ring set at the time which he said he would credit me $1000 for. My response was that the maximum I'd spend was $2400 including the trade-in. I ended up getting charged $2400 after the trade-in value was taken off, which was not what I was expecting. Everything I have in writing from them simply says the cost would be $2400 and I would get $1000 for my trade-in. That could honestly be interpreted as $2400 after the discount (which I didn't take it as) or $1400 after the discount. When confronting the shop owner, he acted very immature, claiming he didn't see where there could be any confusion. What's really shady to me is that Jeremy charged me exactly what he interpreted my maximum expense to be. Yet I was told by Alisa that they always use the same quality diamonds - and he made the rings exactly like a set looks in a picture I brought him. How was I that good in guessing what the cost of the rings would be with these preset conditions? The rings in the picture I brought him actually cost $2300 total through a different jeweler and they had better quality diamonds and great tcw. ALSO - the e-ring setting he made for me has a halo of diamonds and diamonds on the shank. Gem Design Jewelers claimed to use only G-color SI1-clarity diamonds. However, the diamonds in the halo are clearly much more yellow and I can see a huge carbon impurity in one without a loupe. Finally, there are two diamonds that are not even fastened by all of the prongs around them so I am getting them fixed by a different jeweler (obviously) before they fall out. Jeremy is unprofessional with subpar abilities. I highly recommend going anywhere else. read more

About 5 months ago I had a custom piece made by the owner which I am now regretting. He made it sound like everything would turn out perfectly when I described to him what I wanted, yet now that it is complete I keep finding more faults with it. It's a very contemporary shape that should be symmetrical, but is not. It has diamonds but none of them are set so that they sit flat. A diamond actually fell out a couple weeks ago and I barely ever wear it. Taking a closer look I can tell that the settings are not all properly securing the diamonds so I took it to a different jeweler. They told me they had to re-set all of them. The jeweler also informed me that the diamonds used are not the quality that Gem Design Jewelers claimed they were. The shop itself is nice and one woman who works there could not have been more friendly. I wouldn't recommend purchasing any jewelry handmade by the owner, though. read more
