After spending 3 hrs trying to pick my own bedroom door lock last night (and another desperate attempt for another hour this morning), I finally have in and called around for a locksmith. Everyone who answered (not worth naming, but screw you, rude ripoff bastids) tried to charge me $80 to $120. One guy even said he was going to charge me $75 initially and said that his technician will determine the actual cost of labor when he gets there. No thanks! I then saw all the great reviews about Mr. Kong on yelp and decided to give him a call. Best decision ever! He answered right away and told me he'd be there in less than an hour, even though he sounded busy (I could tell he was at a restaurant or social event from the background noise). He arrived 10 mins earlier than the promised 9:30am appt and voila, my effing door was open in seconds! He charges way less, half of what I was quoted from the other guys. Costs are based on the type of lockout or job, so ask him and he'll be able to provide you with the exact charges over the phone. Gawd I have bad luck with my car. Thank goodness I was able to find Gem Key & Locksmith, thanks to yelp! I unfortunately had to call him for help not once, but TWICE. Both times were due to my car remote not working. -____-'' The first time I had contacted him, he had needed to order a whole new remote to replace mine. After a week of waiting for the part, he contacted me and we set up a place to meet. Had a little misunderstanding on the locations (oops) but finally met up. He immediately got to work and I had a brand new remote within 5-10 minutes! YAYYYYY. He tested it out for me and i was ecstatic. HOWEVER, me being a dumb dumb ended up breaking it a few months after (apparently I thought it wanted to go swimming with me, hehe). I contacted Gem Key. He said he couldnt do it that day but he would contact me when he was available...which ended up being the next day in the morning. 0.0 Again, he quickly went to work and i had a new remote again :D I asked him how much it would be this time (I figured it may differ since he had to order the part last time) and he asked how much he charged me last time, and went a little cheaper than that :) He also asked what had happened (I think he thought that the old remote that he had given wasnt good) but I told him about the remote taking a swim with me, hehe. I have this really bad habit of remembering to reconnect my keys when I leave my apartment. What I mean is, I have the town and country key ring that pulls apart at the Yin&Yang symbol. I keep my house keys on one side and my car keys on the other. Anyway, I had removed the house keys to take my pupper on her morning walk and after returning, was in a hurry to get to the baby shower I was hosting. Upon arriving to the baby shower location I realized I had left my house keys on the kitchen counter and no one had my spare! Dang, just my luck. Called asking for assistance in programming a new car key for my Chevy Trax that I purchased over the internet. I followed the instructions that came with the new key to no avail it wouldn't work. The instructions said if it doesn't work then the vehicle was made in Canada & I would need a locksmith to program it. I Called Gem Key & someone answered right away. After I explained the issue over the phone & texted pictures of the key the gentleman attempted to help me over the phone free of charge. He helped me figure out my car was manufactured in Mexico & there should be no problems unless there is something wrong with the key I ordered. He walked me through it over the phone very patiently multiple times & it still didn't work, so he said I could bring the car to him. I ended up figuring out that my GM Chevy had its own very different newfangled way of reprogramming keys & figured it out myself. I then called the phone number listed and was told that this was a mobile service rather than a walk in like City Mill where I could go to have my keys made. I was just about to hang up when the owner said if I met him near his residence he would do my keys for me. Ten minutes later, I met Bill, the proprietor who took my keys and proceeded to duplicate them. However, he refused to take any money for his work. He said he usually goes to peoples homes to change their locks and can also make sure that all the keys are working. In my case, since he had no way of checking for sure, he didn't want to charge me. CALL THEM FIRST!! Bill is an awesome guy. I broke the end of my key into my trunk lock. He quoted me for a key extraction. Under $50. Other places I called first were quoting around $150.00. No way. It turned out to not be a simple extraction so Bill had to pull the lock apart to get the piece out. He was so patient during this process that was suppose to be a quick fix. (I have met some pretty rude employees when things do not go as planned). I know it took way more work than just an extraction but he accepted my quoted payment since thats all I had in cash. If you are looking for a good locksmith, I would always call Gem Key & Locksmith Service first. My apartment inside front door handle was sagging and not working properly. When I opened the door from the inside, the door handle would not spring back into normal position. I suspected a spring might be damaged, but because it is a mortise lock, I was not sure. I got multiple quotes to fix my door handle lock, and it was between $500 and $700, depending on the model of the lock. The other locksmiths wanted to do a "R & R" of the damaged lock. "R & R" means - remove and replace. This is something that many locksmiths, mechanics, etc... do when they do not want to diagnose the real problem and want to fix it fast. The problem for the customer is that it could be very costly for the customer, especially if the wrong part is replaced and the part is expensive. In my case, the latch box part alone could cost at least $450. That is why I am so glad that I had Mr. Kong do the job. He diagnosed that only the spring was broken, and the rest of the other parts to the lock was fine. It would cost only about $25 to $50 to get a replacement spring. The lock was an older model, but he was able to track down the spring, and the TOTAL cost was only $150 for the whole repair. This saved me between $350 to $550 from the quotes given to me by the other locksmiths. That is a lot of plate lunches for me! read more
